A charming gem in downtown Frederick! We decided to go out to dinner on a busy Saturday night and were lucky to get a table at Up on Market. The restaurant is charming and soothing with well-spaced tables and old school music tinkling in the background. Service was relaxed and friendly. The food outstanding. We started with crab bisque, French onion soup, and charcuterie board. The bisque was creamy and delicately flavored (no Old Bay!). The French onion soup was beautifully rendered - beefy broth full of onions, served with a toasted baguette slice covered in cheese. The charcuterie board was generous, with a nice selection of cheese and meat, grapes, plus wonderfully toasted baguette slices. The only criticism is the pistachios were under seasoned. Entrees didn't disappoint. The veal Francaise was as soft as butter, with a lovely white wine sauce. The accompanying pasta with caramelized onion was amazing - sweet and savory onions coating thin spaghetti. Two of us got the rack of lamb. Wow. Perfectly cooked to medium rare with a wonderful, peppery crust. The au gratin potatoes were creamy and unctuous. Our granddaughter got the fettuccine Alfredo and was very happy. We didn't try any of their cocktails; the restaurant has an extensive wine list and two of tried one of their Bordeaux which was excellent. During dinner one of the owners came by our table to refill water and ask about our meal. He was quite charming, and very proud of his restaurant and inn. Several of the reviews of the restaurant cited slow service. We waited a long time for our drinks (my husband had to flag down our server), but after that the food came out at a good pace. Honestly, I rounded up to 4 stars. It was more like 3.7/3.8 because service was a bit slow and not very coordinated. But our food once served was excellent! French toast came with warmed maple syrup and they were able to separate all the toppings since our little one is in the phase when they do not like different foods touching. The fried oysters were light and NOT greasy at all. I liked them without the sauce but we kept the sauce for the fresh fried potato chips. Which were amazing! The charcuterie plate was full to the brim with so many goodies (see pictures). The duck appetizer was topped off so high and drizzled with the most delectable refreshing vinegrette. We visited this restaurant on a whim while visiting Frederick one afternoon. The decor was delightfully light and well kept with historical elements. We were seated quickly and the waitress was sweet and accommodating. I enjoyed the Crab Bisque to start and had the hanger steak to follow. The Bisque was delicious, not too salty and had a nice amount of backfin crab. I would go back just for this. The flavor of the hanger steak was wonderful. The meat itself was a little 'stringy' in that there were a lot of tendons and was thus hard to cut through. It may have been the day's selection but as delicious as the flavor was, it was frustrating. My wife had an eggs platter (cant remember exactly the selection) and reported it was delicious and a sufficient portion. It was totally frustrating as our server is washing glasses, owner talking up some other customers. It was poor service. Truly disappointed. Salads were okay, nothing to say come back. Another hit for downtown Frederick. Went to this restaurant for brunch and honestly could have found something for each meal of the day. The ambience is upscale modern French and the menu can be a bit pricey, for good reason. Large portions of delicious fresh food. Paola was our waitress and she gave great suggestions to try, including a really good sparkling rosé that was light and smooth. Two of us got brunch items while one got the Cesar Salad with Salmon and we all cleared our plates. The 3 egg omelettes were very fluffy and not over stuffed with our toppings. The roasted potatoes were perfectly roasted with a delicious dill crème to dip in. For dessert we got the Pan au chocolate croissant and it was small but tasty. I knew nothing about this restaurant when I went in on a Friday night, only that we needed hot coffee if we were going to walk outside in the cold to see Carroll Creek's winter light boats down the street. Up On Market let us order coffee and latte to-go and while waiting my father and I realized we'd discovered something by stumbling in. There's a lot of history here in the building. And we met the owner who brought more history to life -- he's put so much of himself into this restaurant and adjacent inn too. His wife is a chef. With one look at the menu it was clear this was a quality French bistro. We decided to go back for dinner the next night with friends. Good French food has the best curated dishes. Our group shared the fillet and crab empanades, small appetizer bites of goodness, enough to leave you wanting more. I had a cup of a satisfying vegan asparagus soup (we were told the French onion and the mushroom soups are excellent). I decided on the veal française main course which was amazing, tender and with a perfect sauce. I had a glass of Sauvignon blanc, trying a mild NZ sample before switching to a traditional full-bodied one. Then for dessert I ordered affogato, one of my favorite things, a decaf espresso with a dollop of vanilla ice cream in it, yum. I think I had all the courses, haha, and my stomach was happy, not overburdened. I couldn't believe how excited I was about their food. I hope to try more of their extensive menu soon! Love this restaurant. It is beautiful and authentic. From someone that has been to France I felt transported back in a small way to a little bistro table there. We had the crispy asparagus to start. Tender inside lightly breaded and super crisp outside. My husband had the duck and loved it (and he has had duck in many restaurants). I had the fruits de Mer (seafood pasta) with the arrabiata sauce and it was heaven. Just enough heat that lingered but not spice forward and it was packed with lots of fresh seafood. First visit on a quiet Tuesday evening was a wonderful dining experience. The restaurant itself is exquisite with attention to detail in every detail... It is evident that this restaurant is a true labor of love on the part of not only the owners but the staff. The antique chairs, glass mirrors, the bar, woodwork,... each were carefully restored and look great. It is a treat to dine in these surroundings. We only had a few dishes and a chocolate desert, but what we had --including the bread-- was delicious and crafted very well. I loved my Beef Bourguignon hit the spot perfectly on an unusually cooler summer night. The menu is extensive and begs for more meals, but I am writing this review because every detail of what we experienced was really excellent. ...And the staff is attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about every detail as well. The service was excellent, which speaks to the entire experience itself. Many restaurants in Frederick have professional staff and excellent service, but not every restaurant follows up excellent service with equally excellent dishes. And no restaurant that I have been in recently is meticulously restored like Up on Market. We admittedly stopped in to use the bathroom, but started looking at the menu and talking to the host and were quickly convinced to sit down for a light dinner. The shepherd's pie and crab chowder were very good. The host told us about the history of the building and went on for a little too long, but it was interesting overall. Service: - the waitress was really friendly! She had a super cute, bubbly personality and was very attentive. She did try to take our drinks before we had finished them a few times, and then made some pretty hard hints we should order more - My father in law ordered the pasta and the waitress confused the order but really tried hard to convince us that someone truly *did* order the scallops - I ordered a macchiato that was just totally forgotten but they didn't put it on the bill so that wasn't so bad! Food: - appetizer: fried asparagus was actually really good! - meal: got the stuffed shrimp. So bad the protein portion was minuscule, the shrimp was overcooked and chewy and none of it tasted fresh. It was covered in some Asian inspired sauce & baked and was thoroughly bad. The fries took up half of the plate and were very meh, just covered in pepper. The coleslaw it came with was also mid, felt like fast food coleslaw. On a positive note my friend got the pork chop and that was cooked perfectly and very good! Also the food took ages to come out it was wild. But man, almost $40 for a plate of mostly sub par fries was super disappointing. Francis and Michelle always welcome me into the restaurant and the food is phenomenal. The atmosphere is so nice. It's not too loud and has a eclectic urban feel, yet cozy. Tonight I had the black striped sea bass with delicate savory cream sauce paired with a Bruno Giacosa - Nebbiolo D'Alba. Francis recommended this wine and it complemented the fish perfectly. The cream caper sauce was unbelievable and what I really enjoyed was the sweet onions in the pasta. Probably the best meal I've had! Topped off with a grasshopper! This is a lovely french restaurant tucked in the middle of downtown Frederick! Overall the food, customer service, and ambiance were A+. The price point vs. portion size is where the 4 stars really come from! our bill was an astounding $350+, and it was only 4 of us with 1 entree per person, 2 appetizers, 6 macarons, and maybe 1-2 drinks per person...so you do the math! However, another star is knocked off because as I was inquiring about their french 75 drink, Mr. Frances (the owner) offhandedly asked me my age...which was super awkward and felt inappropriate. I immediately responded "are you asking for my ID?", because I was unclear of his intentions. You don't ask any grown woman her age, let alone in front of an audience. He replied "no". However, he then awkwardly started to ramble on about how he had 2 others customers (who were black..not stated, but implied) who both looked in their 40s, but were in fact mother and daughter, and the daughter just turned 21; and how he was so surprised by her age. This did NOT clarify why he specifically asked me my age, and his story was cringy. Additionally, my entire table already ordered their drinks, and no one else was asked their age. Thankfully, our server stepped right in, and pretty much made it very clear that if Im expected to show my ID, then my whole table needed to show their IDs. immediately Mr. Frances changed his tone (....side eye). Ultimately, He ended up being very personable, but I think that was to compensate for his inappropriateness. btw, I was the only person of color in my party..so let's be clear and fair, so there's no misunderstandings of anyone's intentions. We went on a Sunday since it was the only place without a wait (it was actually nearly empty, which should have been our first sign). We walked in and only one other table was occupied. We waited for at least 7 minutes while two staff members moved around doing chores; they could see us but just...didn't care about paying customers? We asked if we could sit at a certain table but apparently it was reserved, uh ok. The table did not become occupied during our hour and a half visit. The woman who waited on us had no customer service skills. It was like we were bothering her by ordering. All I wanted was to get out. They charge you to split a dish and the food is already over priced. Nothing we ate was better than other Frederick spots. I am appalled at how rude this woman was. What an amazing gem on East Market Street. The owners captured what French cuisine means. I had the Chicken and my husband had the scallops with guyere cheese grits and asparagus. This adaptation to the original menu item was based on customer requests and is adjusted to the needs of the customer. You can't ask for more! The authenticity does not stop here of course. If you are requesting a cocktail. Every ingredient that is added is measured and put in carefully versus other places that tend to rely more and more on premade mixers. But don't take my word for it. Our first time coming to "Up on Market" was on Memorial Day around 4ish with my husband. Right from beginning we were welcomed very warmly by a very nice young woman. Sadly, I didn't catch her name but she had attended us amazingly through out the entire experience. We were sat right next to the window on this cute round table. The waitress had explained to us everything was made in house; the sauces, the dressings even the drinks. Started off with the empanadas for the appetizers, two crab and two filet and all I can say is wow!....delicious, delicious, delicious . Once we finished that we both decided on trying the pastas. I had the Alfredo with grilled chicken and my husband the Wagner's Sage Sausage also with grilled chicken. Both dishes came out beautifully prepared and the taste was superb. Not overly salted just the perfect balance of the sauce. Then we finished it off with two desserts, I had the creme brûlée and my husband had the ricotta cheesecake. Again very impressed! Never had creme brûlée and I loved every bite. Then before we left, the owner "Francis" was so kind to come over and introduce himself to us. "Francis" was sooooo kind and we both enjoyed listening and talking to him about the history of the establishment. Especially the drinks, I've never had a "Nigroni" but after talking to Francis I'm def going to have one now and the old fashion. Just a great first time experience and will for sure be coming back again. The ambience of the entire restaurant just felt homie and calming. I felt I could stay for hours and be at peace. This quaint French restaurant is on the corner of market & 3rd street. It is very charming and welcoming inside, I felt almost out of the country. Outstanding service, great food and a cute atmosphere. This is French cuisine and a cute bistro with a beautiful marble counter bar. I went with another couple after Christmas and we had a great time sharing wine and eating a really nice, upscale dinner. It's perfect for date night and I was told they have an amazing breakfast that I'll have to try. I had scallops and they were so good. I asked for recommendations as the menu looked so good and I was given like 5 recommendations. It was hard to choose. The desert was great too. Wonderful, Charming Dinner We had dinner here on the recommendation of a friend, though I admit I was a bit concerned after reading some recent reviews. All for naught! The restaurant is a charming, beautifully decorated bistro, in an old restored building. We had a wonderful, relaxed dinner. Both the entree and dessert were delicious and tastefully presented. The owner stopped by, thanks us for coming and gave us a bit of the history of the decor and the location. As to the comments in some other reviews... we were there on a Tuesday, and were one of only 3 parties there, so things might be different on a crowded weekend. However, our waiter was pleasant and attentive without being obtrusive. I ordered the roasted quail, and he mentioned it would take 20-25 minutes, asking if that was okay for me (it was). When dinner came, I ordered a second glass of wine, and he asked if I might like to try a Resiling they had recently added. He promptly brought me a taste, followed in short order by a full glass. The service was relaxed, but not inattentive. We did not feel rushed, nor were we antsy at any point. My date and I showed up for our reservation (Mickelson 8pm 10/10) and sat at the host stand for 5 mins before leaving and going across the street. Some may say 5 mins isnt too long to wait but let me explain the scenario. From the host stand you can see into the kitchen and on the line. From that angle I could see staff huddled around talking, most backs facing the front door unable to get their attention. There was one other table in the restaurant, no bartender behind the bar, and when I proceeded to say "excuse me!" trying to get their attention 3 times awkwardly in front of the only table in the restaurant, the music was so loud the staff couldn't hear me :) super awkward. I frequent downtown and haven't been able to try up on market simply because of service alone. The staff probably still thinks my date and I just never showed up to our reservation. read more

Go elsewhere. This place does not deserve your business. Upon arrival, we were told by a frazzled host (the owner) there would be a 10 minute wait... I wasn't concerned about this. My friend and I were in no hurry. In fact, we had compassion and patience to spare when we arrived. 20-30 minutes after getting seated we received coffee and water. And nothing else -- not even a top-off or check-in -- for another 30-45 minutes. The owner came to our table to ask for our order again because she "might have messed up." She returned to announce she "hadn't messed up" but she said she'd get us another round of waters and coffees -- coffee on the house! But it never came... After an hour and a half, our food came -- but not all of it! When we got the check, she charged me for an extra "Americano." I reminded her that I only had one and, in fact, I ordered a black drip coffee. I reminded her that the second one she was going to put "on the house" never came. She insisted Americano and drip coffee are the same and stated that she was making the drink but I canceled the order. All my fault, I guess. She then put the cherry right on top of this god awful experience by explaining how we were to blame for the long wait and horrible service because we were a "walk-in" with no reservation. From the other 1-star reviews, it sounds like it wouldn't have mattered either way. Bottom line, the owner treated us like we were a nuisance instead of a paying customer. Go elsewhere. This places does not deserve your business. Also, my bank currently shows they charged me twice for the bill amount. I will dispute the second charge. read more

We love stopping here as a halfway point on our way home. The restaurant is quaint and historic, and I absolute love that they haven't followed that modern trend of having televisions in every corner. It really allows for a more personal experience with others and true enjoyment of the food without many distractions. The service is good and there is an emphasis on slowing down to enjoy the atmosphere and food, like the French people do. We sat there for about two hours, but had a fantastic time. The menu is a bit expensive, but the food and drinks are worth it! We were even recommended a fantastic Riesling to pair with the stuffed quail special. The lamb was cooked very well and the lentil salad was refreshing. The menu did say that there would be onions and a Dijon vinaigrette, but I only really tasted olive oil. The greens were fresh and the addition of lentils was perfect, though. We stayed for dessert, which was well worth it, especially with the handmade whipped cream!
