Ive been here multiple times and every time is a great experience. It's German fare with American options as well. Their french onion is amazing along with their Bavarian pretzels. Recently I had the lamb shank on special and my husband had the ribs. Both exceeded our expectations. The restaurant is decently spacious with tables, bar, patio and area. Sports bar vibe but also good for a nice dinner. Our server was very knowledgeable (he says he works in the kitchen) So of course his recommendations were on point! The Context: As the name denotes, Black Forest is a German restaurant and bar with a wide selection of alcohol, from craft beers to stronger liquor. The Food: My 3 companions and I ordered one jumbo brauhaus Bavarian pretzel to share, and jumbo it was! We split it 4 ways and it whetted our appetite perfectly. For my main course, I ordered fish and chips. My companions ordered the champagne salmon, the wurstenplatten (sausage platter), and the pork osso bucco (slow roasted pork shank on bacon and mashed potatoes). The Taste: My fish and chips were enjoyable. Though the batter was a little TOO batter-y for me, the white fish inside moist and flaky, just the way I like it. The fries were great. My companions dishes were great too. The pork shank was amazing, the salmon was top notch, and the sausages were good. The spatzle (noodle) that came with both the salmon and sausages was such an interesting side -- kinda bland, kinda chewy, but really enjoyable. Who would've thunk it? And the red cabbage that came with the sausages were surprisingly yummy. The Service and Setting: Our server was excellent -- friendly and knowledgeable; she made an excellent recommendation (pork shank). And she was quite attentive, refilling our waters quickly without us having to ask. And the interior had a subtle German aesthetic without being too guady. Plus, it has a live band when we came on a Saturday night. The Conclusion: Black Forest is a great choice if you want German food or a place to knock back a few beers while watching the game. While the prices are premium, it's definitely a "you get what you pay for" situation. I'll definitely return if I get the chance. read more

*3.5* Our family recently visited to celebrate a birthday, we were a party of 7 for dine in. The food items pictured were very good. Great cheeseburger, Wursteplatten was delicious as always. Love the red cabbage. The Bavarian pretzel was hot, soft, and delicious. My mom ordered the salmon and raved about how good the sauce was for the salmon and the generous portion of asparagus. All of these items I would rate 5/5. Our server whose name escapes me was attentive and friendly. Now for the not so great, my father ordered the special of the day which was the veal schnitzel sandwich. This dish needs some serious work- schnitzel is supposed to be pounded very thin/flat as possible before breading and frying. The schnitzel was about 1/2 inch thick and did not appear to be pounded at all. This made it difficult to eat and impacts the taste because it is not prepared authentically. My husband ordered the pork jagerschnitzel and his was served thick as well. My son ordered boneless wings in honey old bay flavor. Normally this is a favorite of his. however he did not care for the preparation at BFTH. The wings were dowsed in straight up honey that pooled on the plate and made everything sticky. I did not factor this into my rating because I realize this is more a preference than issue, but I do wonder if others enjoy this prep? Finally my brother had the chicken and waffles, also not pictured but it was fantastic and the plate was piled high with fried chicken, bacon, and delicious waffles. While some of the entrees may appear "pricey" the portions are always generous and I always leave full with leftovers for tomorrow. I do think BFTH needs to revisit their schnitzel recipe sine they are a German restaurant and the preparation needs to be true to the dish. Much like chicken parmesan, the taste and flavor are directly related to the thinness of the meat for the best result. We will return and avoid the dishes we didn't care for in the future. read more

Normally I love the food at Black Forest. We love going there to listen to music on their outdoor terrace and the food is delicious. This past weekend, I ordered the Pork Osso Buco and it was as dry as tree bark. Really almost inedible- over cooked and dry. For $27.00, I was very disappointed. My dinner was pork schnitzel, potato pancakes, and applesauce. I was a mystery shopper for 30 years so I will give you the highs and the lows, fairly. The schnitzel was very overcooked, dark and the meat dry and tough. The potato pancakes were also very over fried. I told the server and she kindly offered to have it redone. It came back exactly as the first plate. The gravy was delicious and the chunky applesauce was good. I took about 5 bites of the first plate and 5 bites of the second plate. The waitress took the plate away, came back and said "no charge, I hope you will come back and try something else. Our crabcakes are good." I will give them a second chance. One more thing, they have old scratched wooden tables that are inherently sticky! Like you can't wipe the sticky off. Gross. read more

Starting off by saying the Bartender, Macy, was killing it while my friend and I were there. Making drinks, grabbing beers, and running food. She was great! I met a friend here and quickly realized we should have went somewhere else. I was made to feel uncomfortable and like I did something wrong and I will never go back to this locations. One of the servers is the brother of the girl my ex-husband was cheating on me with. I wouldn't have realized this until he walked out to give someone food and made a face at me, then every other young waitstaff member made a point to come out and see my friend and I. It was very obvious and at first I didn't say anything to my friend, but she made a comment to me when, either the manager or maybe owner, kept coming out by the bar and just hanging around the corner of it directly in line with us, as if he thought my friend and I would be an issue. We just came to celebrate her recent engagement and her asking me to be a bridesmaid and this treatment completely ruined everything. Macy was great, however, and even though she was busy she made sure to come and check on us and refresh our drinks. If this experience wouldn't have occurred, we would have ordered more food and I would be able to tell you how much. The onion rings and pretzel we ordered were yummy and the espresso martini my friend got was good as well. They have a massive menu with lots of options for everyone and lots of beers and wines on tap. It does seem to be an older crowd, but we also went on a weekday so that could be why. Could be a pro or con depending on what you are looking for! However, I will take my business to Das in Bel Air. I shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable for things my ex-husband did, when I did nothing wrong. The staff has always been helpful and friendly when we go here. It can get pretty loud in the bar area when busy and the high tables aren't super comfortable. Overall, it's a nice ambiance. I love this place, here's the problem. The draft lines need serious cleaning! Over the last year i've noticed a deterioration in the quality of the beers on tap due to the draft lines. The nuanced flavors of some of their delicate german beers are completely muted by dirty draft lines. i love this place so much that i will clean them myself if they need help. This place is a GEM. The food was so good. We tried a few things: 1. Oysters - AMAZING, fresh, sized well, served with plenty of lemon and cocktail sauce. 2. Macaroni and cheese with bacon. - the cheeses they used were perfect and it was such a large portion. 3. Chicken and waffles - got it with chicken tenders instead of the bone in. Made it a lot easier to eat and was delicious. 4. Burger - cooked perfectly, and the fries were perfectly crispy but soft on the inside. Yummmm! We had a late dinner here on Saturday with friends whom also happen to be family! Everything was delicious! We had fried ravioli and pierogis to start. Great for sharing amongst four adults. I had the hunar jager schnitzel w applesauce and potato pancakes and it was very good. The DBF had the chicken and bacon and waffles and really enjoyed it. Shrimp and grits and pork schnitzel cordon blue were also ordered and enjoyed. Large portions too, I brought home leftovers. Service was a bit slow re seating, drinks and order taking; they seemed to be getting a late evening rush as we had to wait for the hostess for several minutes while she seated a group. The line waiting continued to grow outside the tiny entrance area. Odd that it was getting so crowded ~8:30/9 when they close at 11. I def plan to go back to check out some other food items! We accidentally happened upon this place about a year ago when we dropped our son off at camp. We seemed it out again this year it was so good. Beer is nice and cold, food is cooked deliciously, service is quick. The first time we ate outside on the back porch at night. All the lights made us feel like we weren't anywhere near civilization. Stopped by here tonight for dinner. The restaurant is decorated outside with lights and inside with different Christmas decor. It was very cute. We were immediately seated as a party of 4. They have a pretty good beer and wine menu, and several other options for drinks. The peach sangria was light and tasted good. They had specials for dinner and a regular menu. Lots of things sounded really good. We ordered a lobster salad sandwich, a lobster roll (both were exactly the same except the shape of the bun - the sandwich had a round pretzel bun and the roll was an elongated pretzel bun), and 2 different burgers. Each meal came with plenty of fries. The food was good and the ambiance was relaxed and nice. Definitely a spot we would come back to, especially to try some other things on the menu. I ordered the Jumbo Lump Crab cake entree (with asparagus & red potatoes). The menu price was $24.99. OK, I figured, lets try it. Well.... the crab cake was NOT jumbo lump, not even one lump. This was a disappointing visit. We have been here before and liked it. We sat at the bar and the bartender was not very attentive and they weren't busy enough to be slammed. I ordered cream of crab and the Brussels with maple bacon. I sent the cream of crab back because there was zero crabmeat in it. The Brussels were good but very sweet. When I told the bartender the issue with the soup, she just said "got it" never asking if I wanted anything else. My husband got the chili and it was on the cold side but still ate it. He said the flavor of it was just ok. The menu is overwhelming with lots of dishes on it. They even have a separate menu page with a lot of specials. I don't remember the menu being so big. When restaurants have too many food selections on the menu the food quality starts to go downhill IMO. Not sure when we will be back. read more

I was looking forward to a simple jagerschnitzel but no. Some kind of fusion of chicken schnitzel. So I opted for the hamburger. If you want cheese on it be prepared to pay for it. If you want it cooked a certain way be prepared to send it back for a second go round. The photo is supposed to be medium well. No even close. The waitress apologized and said keep a few fries to "munch on" while they fix the problem. I took about 7 fries from my plate what came back was shameful. Yum! Delicious, and COVID Safe, recently we stopped by here for a late lunch on a Friday and had a delicious meal! They offer tons of outdoor seating with outdoor heaters and lots of spacing /distancing between tables. Everyone on staff wears mask and is really friendly, the bathrooms and overall restaurant is pretty clean and up to date. Food - overall food was delicious. We got the fried Oysters per the recommendation of the waitress, and she was spot on. The fry was good not overdone at all. The main entrees were both delicious, we got the sausage french fries or mashed potatoes and chicken schnitzel with potato pancakes and apple sauce. Overall everything was seasoned well, I especially like the applesauce and potato, they really helped out with eating so much fried foods in one sitting. Checked out this tap house for a Sunday lunch. Large open bar area with large list of liquors and drafts. I opted for a mango mojito and was disappointed in the flavor and consistency of the drink. I asked a fellow party member if their mojito was also off, she agreed. Syrupy texture and artificial taste had us sipping occasionally and eventually we completely gave up on the drink. However, other party members enjoyed the sour drafts they ordered. Table ordered Maryland Cream of Crab soups for an appetizer and everyone was happy with the quantity and taste. Rich deep flavor and good chunks of crabmeat! I got the Farmhouse Beet Salad for my entree and was delighted with the freshness of the ingredients. DON'T EAT HERE! I was on the bathroom floor semi-conscious 10 minutes after eating their seafood. Vomiting and severe food poisoning symptoms followed. 911 was called, an ambulance took me to the ER. There were restaurant staff witnesses, other diners, and a nearby nurse that helped me. I gave the owners almost a year to make this right by at least refunding my meal/help with medical bills. They were heartless and rude with no ethical morals. I do not have seafood allergies, so there is no other explanation. See the attached ambulance and ER report.
