This place is looks like a local hole in the wall from the outside but once you enter you can see that there is a lot more going on inside. For starters I sampled 4 of the beers they had on tap, I highly recommend trying Victory, it was great. I order the frickles, which I never was a fan of until I tasted them here. I also had the Taco truck sliders with pork belly, absolutely amazing. Last bit not least, the meatballs. I'm about to go eat those right now, a day later. Staying overnight in Poughkeepsie for a night, we had slim pickings for a good dinner spot. Sure, there were a few good-looking places that turned up from some Yelping, and I'm glad I picked Schatzi's from the few, which turned out to provide a very satisfying and enjoyable meal. As it was a nice warm summer night, we of course chose to sit in the backyard garden area, which was beautiful. Aside from the large open empty garage and a port-o-potty off to the side, it was as pleasant an atmosphere as you could hope to dine in, and a complete 180 from the darker bar vibe indoors. They have the type of menu I love - plenty of beige and meaty options, with this one mostly dominated by appetizers and finger food and just sausages and a few sandwiches for the mains. We ordered a ton of delicious stuff: - Warm Bavarian Pretzels ($7 for 3) Everyone gets these, and with good reason, as they were the best of the starters we got. The 3 pretzels, in the form of long pretzel rolls, were piping hot and soft, with just the right amount of salt. These are a must. - Grown Up Tots ($8 for 5) These are nothing like normal tots, but are delicious nonetheless. Described as potato dumplings, they are filled with braised pork belly, cheddar cheese and onions. They are large pieces, with 5 in an order, and were also extremely hot and crispy, just the way fried food should be. - Chili Dusted Wings ($8) These were pretty good. They give you quite a generous portion with this huge plate of wings, which have a ton of flavor from the chili seasoning. - Bauernwurst Sausage Sandwich ($8) This was excellent. Definitely the specialty here, as they have a whole section of the menu devoted to different sausage varieties, this was great even though I don't particularly enjoy sausages. I think the delicious, soft pretzel bun helped a lot. - Schatzi Burger ($15) This is one of those burgers that tries to shock, and just goes a little over the top. The thick, slightly overcooked and under seasoned patty is topped with a huge hunk of crispy pork belly, melted cheddar, and a big mushy potato pancake, all slathered in the bright pink Schatzi's sauce, and served on a toasted pretzel bun. I think if they went simple and focused on cooking that meat better and eliminating the pork and pancake, it could be a great burger. In this form though, it's just a bit of a mess. - Stout Cheesecake ($8) One of two dessert options available, this chocolate cheesecake had way too heavy an alcoholic flavor for me. I should've expected that given the focus on beer here, but it was just an unpleasant amount in the cake. Order more appetizers and skip dessert. Service was very friendly, but about as attentive as you would expect at a busy bar. We had to flag down our servers every now and then, mostly for more water and napkins to deal with the salty, messy starters, but they were very accommodating and pleasant. Next time I'm in Poughkeepsie for whatever reason, I would definitely return here for some more delicious beige. read more

What a great little gem in Poughkeepsie! I visited the other day with my fiance and brother and we decided to divide and conquer (the menu!) So we opted for the famous Buzzfeed burger (which my mom had found online and sent to me weeks before), the knockwurst, and cubans. What a great decision! We were able to snack, share, and stuff our faces! The food was hearty, hot, and hard to eat (LARGE burger and LARGE bratwurst), and also very delicious. They also paired well with the many craft beers on the menu - offered in increments of 10oz up to a full liter German style! I found the Green Bullet on the menu - one of my absolute favorite IPAs that is mainly on the west coast and very hard to find out here, so I was pleasantly surprised! The bar is a little bit hole-in-the-wall-ish from the street, but it is long (with many bar and table seating options) as well as a large outdoor beer garden option in the far back. Unfortunately, when you visit in December, there isn't much outdoor anything going on :) Great little gastro pub and craft beer spot in Poughkeepsie. I definitely plan to be back in the future. However, I had to deduct a star for the awkward hours - no weekday lunch ever? And only 1 day of happy hour? I see a little area for improvement :) read more

This place has GREAT fries - theyre probably my favorite thing there! First visit was okay, second visit was better. Some menu items are better than others. I prefer a pretty basic cheeseburger without too many additions; my first time there, I ordered the Schatzi burger which had a lot going on. For the second visit, I asked for a plain cheeseburger and they were accommodating to my request and I enjoyed the burger much more. The wings were very good and the pierogis arent bad either. Absolute first time here and everything was wonderful. As a single diner, I often get treated like a second class individual, but not so here. I am half german so I was looking forward to their fare after a full day of hiking. Service was excellent throughout the meal. Went on a Sunday afternoon. They let me taste the beer that I was not familiar with and then I ordered a yummy flavor. They have lots and lots to choose from for drinks. I had fried pierogies and frickles (fried pickles) for appetizers and the jagerschnitzel for entree. OMG what a delicious bunch of food. I never had fried pickles before but they were great with the horseradish crema. The perogies with sour cream and scallion oil were delish. The true tell for the place, though, was the schnitzel. It was huge, cooked perfect, topped over a heaping of red cabbage and german potato salad. I got three meals out of that plate. I will admit that the back of this restaurant/bar could be a tad more cozy, I would have liked to devour that meal in a booth like setting. But the food was fabulous. I've been wanting to go here for quite some time, but it always was "on our way" to/from vacation and the menu, while delicious, looked like a gut punch for the middle of a carride. That said! 3pm! Not sure why it took me so long to finally get here and check this place out, but now (after being there twice) I'm glad I did. Very cool spot to come and eat, or just sit outside and have a drink. Plenty of great beers on tap (not sure how often they rotate but I'm told the change up fairly often). My first visit ended up having the Schatzi Burger (of click-bait BuzzFeed fame). The burger itself is pretty awesome but almost too big. The pork belly topping is a really nice touch, but I found myself removing the potato pancake after a few bites and eating it on the side. The next trip I had the spicy cheddar brats. I was happier with those for sure. The Chipotle sauce.topping wasn't as spicy as I would have hoped for but the flavor was great and I was satisfied Overall this is a great place to check out and im sure would make anyone's quintessential Poughkeepsie list (even if it did take me 4 years of living here to get to it) read more

Went here for my birthday because I heard great things about this place and I got a free Beer in a Boot for showing my Identification on my birthday. The Atmosphere was great, the garden in the back was really cool. The beer was good, the service was perfect. The reason I am only giving an average rating is the food was bland. The Mac and Cheese was German style with watery bottom no flavor,, the chicken strips tasted like it went from freezer to fryer leaving it pink and under cook in the middle. The thing that really bothered me was the Tzi Tzi flies, I saw several over my glass when sitting at the bar getting my secondary beer round after dinner, when I see the small flies I started wondering from outside or unclean bar so as I watched the staff I noticed none of had cleaning towels in their hands and weren't wiping anything down. I've had plenty of conversations with bar staff while they were wiping or cleaning glasses so when I see flies and nobody cleaning it creeps me out. Probably won't go back for a while unless I am invited for a special occasion to give them a second chance. read more

This is a small place (bigger than you think but about the size a bar should be. We came here as a party of 4 on a Sunday night and we got in after 7ish. We had no problem getting seated and walked thru the bar to find a table right up against the end of the bar. We ordered the Pretzels Poutine appetizer and it was pretty tasty. It could have used more cheese and gravy but that also might have made it too wet so err on the side of caution. Our server was the busiest guy in the room. He was also very helpful when it came to ordering. I asked if the appetizer was big enough for four and he said, "hey if you're still hungry you can order another appetizer afterwards." Nice touch. We all ordered something different -- one bean and veggie burger, one pulled pork sandwich, two different burgers. I got the German potato salad instead of fries with mine and I had no regrets. It was not only tasty but it was also warm. The burger is REALLY sizable and is served with a giant knife sticking out of it. I had no trouble cutting mine in half as if that might help. My wife had no luck cutting it in half. Everything was cooked as ordered -- mine well, my wife ordered hers medium. We had one appetizer, four entrees, two sodas. The bill was less than $100 and was slightly above $100 with the tip. This is a solid place to get a burger and a good amount of additional options that are above board in terms of quality and quantity. The seating is peculiar since this is a bar. The stove was right on top of the bar and not far from our table at all. One restroom only so when this place gets jammed you'd better plan ahead. Parking is like ass and involves meters so know that going in. They have a solid burger reputation and they lived up to it. I would come here again. Our server was great. Schatzis is a place that I could rate at 5 stars just for one menu item, i.e. The Schatzis Burger. Awesomely enough, there are many more reasons for this place to be rated so highly in my book. Those reasons are the friendly service, ever rotating and appealing beer menu, and the peaceful seating on the patio behind the restaurant. There aren't too many things that make me more happy than a calm and smiling server, a perfectly cooked and unique burger paired with a beer sampler including a thoughtful variety of beers ranging from light to dark, all located in a place that can act as a quiet retreat from the normal flow of Downtown Poughkeepsie. Thank you for all of the above, Schatzis. Now...back to that burger... How has no one else thought of this combination, and if they have, how have I been so unfortunate to not come across it earlier on in my life? High quality ground beef resting on a crispy potato pancake, and topped with pork belly and purple cabbage mayo (don't knock it till you try it!), resting between sweet, pillowy pretzel buns. It's all one could ask for in a burger; savory, salty, sweet, and oh so juicy. Crazy good. If you're not reading this and shortly after pointing yourself in the direction, and heading to, Schatzis, frankly, I must wonder about your personal care, or at least your reading comprehension. You don't want to live another day without experiencing this burger, people! Plain and simple. While you're there, you might also want to try the tots and/or pierogies. Both show very thoughtful utility of the potato, and are a great appetizer option. They also are perfect for snacking if you're trying to save room for more beer, and opting to not indulge in an entree. If you're pinching pennies, visit on a Wednesday and get your pierogies for only a $1.50 a piece. If that still seems steep for a potato filled dumpling, look at it like this, it's still cheaper than a cupcake, and they go better with a cold one. ;-) read more

I feel like kicking myself after writing my last review. I'm changing my star rating based on my last few visits. If I could rate the food alone that would get a solid 5 stars. Everything is delicious. The service is horrendous. My last waitress really left a bad impression. When anyone ordered a beer, they were brought a different one than ordered. This was because 1) they ran out and/or 2) the bartender didn't want to pour that one. This was honestly what was told to us. When prices range from $7-$12 a beer, customers should be informed of the change. Again the food was brought out one plate at a time. When everyone orders food together they should be served together, especially when we are spending $15 for a hamburger or $8 for pretzels. When the bill was brought out, we asked it could be split. The waitress asked US to split it since she had no idea what we ordered. I couldn't believe that we were asked to split our own bill. Or that she had no idea what we ordered. And because we were not told what beers were given to us, we had no idea if we were over charged or not. So we split our $200 bill, unknowing if it was correct or not. There was no manager to be found. And the bartender (the one with the mohawk) and two bouncers where extremely rude when we walked out. I thought this was suppose to be a chic bar attracting classy people. My suggestion: Lower your prices if you want to give this type of service, then people won't expect much from you. Very sad they went downhill fast. It's too bad - I cannot support a business that is content with treating customers this way. read more

Been to Schatzi's a few times now and it's the perfect place to get a drink and a nice bite to eat. The location is wonderful right on Main Street past near the Civic Center past the arterial. It's great walking distance from the train station so if you wanna grab a meal before heading back to the city this is the place. It's the place you wanna go to on the weekends that won't be swarming with drunk college students. The exposed brick is an awesome decor. But probably my favorite reason to go to Schatzi's outside seating. The menu awesome, lots of savory German food! I have to state that I haven't had a lot of the food here but from what I've had and what I heard from other it's just great. I've had the Schatzi Burger which was a burger topped with crispy pork belly, melted cheddar, potatos and green onion rosti and Schatzi sauce on a toasted pretzel bun. But the main attraction here is the beer for sure. The beer menu is updated every week so whenever you come you can get something different. The staff is pretty helpful when making a selection. They have local beers which is awesome. Overall great trendy place is the Hudson Valley would recommend to give it a try. I think I should just provide a quick update: Schatzi's is, hands-down, my favorite watering hole in town. The food is awesome. The taps change frequently and are always both interesting and good. The bar staff is great. I just dig it all. One important thing to note: they've gone to a "pub" menu on the weekends, and the full menu during the weekdays. The pub menu is essentially all small plates -- apps and sliders and whatnot. I'm not sure I understand this, but I was there on Fri night and didn't leave hungry. Just kept ordering food and drinks all night. Yeah, the Yankees got blown out 16-1...but I can hardly deduct a star off Schatzi's for that. Or can I? read more
