EXCELLENT quality matcha from here. The authentic kind that isn't drowning in sugar. Sawada Coffee is in the same building as green street meats and high five ramen, so the open seating is shared. They do have a few seats along the window but there is plenty of seating if those are full. Service was quick and I was surprised to see that it was fairly busy for a very cold Monday AM. My husband and I shared the military latte (decaf) and it was delicious. Everything a latte should be. I enjoyed how this latte is unique to most coffee shops. It was bold, creamy, and very good. Pricing is fair when compared to other small business cafes.
There's always a line on weekends but it moves at a good pace and drink orders don't take long. The space is shared with green st smoked meats, a full bar, and a ramen shop downstairs. There is a good amount of seating inside and benches with tables outside in the alley shared with Trivoli Tavern.
Sawada is so well-known and highly reviewed so I was very excited to come try for myself! I do think Sawada is beautifully decorated and has such a great vibe. There is lots of seating and plenty of space for studying/wfh. Unfortunately, I was not as impressed with the drinks we got. I got the infamous military latte and hot latte Tokyo style. The military latte was good, but the combination of the matcha and espresso was just ok to me. The usually strong espresso/cocoa flavor gets lost and the matcha tastes watery? I can see why some people are fans, but it was not for me even though I usually love both espresso and matcha. The hot latte was ok, but regular sweetness was way too sweet. I wish I got 50% or less-- just a tip for those who aren't into super sweet coffee. Great crema and body though. I think Sawada is good for the "tourist" experience, but there is better coffee in the city.
The Military latte was my first time trying hot matcha and honestly, it wasn't for me. The Black Camo was better and tasted more like a milk tea. Overall, it was kind of a letdown considering how hyped this spot is for coffee and matcha. The vibes are cool though, and I might come back to try other drinks.
Awesome coffee shop that is in the same spot as a barbecue shop that I have been to that sell Mom barbecue. Got the military latte here and this is a flavor bomb. It is coffee, Matcha, vanilla, and cocoa all mixed into one. The matcha part of the drink is nice and earthy and overall the drink is not sweet at all. Drinks are on the price side. Recommend a spot and will come back.
Sawada has some quality, potent matcha and its shared restaurant, Green Street Smoked Meats, has equally as delicious, well-seasoned elote! It's honestly ideal for when you want to put yourself in a food coma then jolt yourself awake to eat some more. There was a 15-minute wait to order and get your drinks on a Saturday afternoon, but the baristas are doing the best they can while maintaining quality. The vibes are friendly and communal. The long tables are great for big groups, but you might have some trouble finding seats on weekends. Just don't come here to study like I did - there are cafes across the street for that!
I love coffee and I am always trying to check out new coffee shops. I cannot believe I have probably passed Sawada Coffee a million times without realizing it was there, especially since it is connected to a BBQ spot I have been to a few times. Once I was finally introduced to it, I have already been back twice. Everything I have had has been so good, super flavorful and well balanced. On my last visit I tried one of their specialty coffees and it was phenomenal. Definitely a new favorite and a must try if you are a coffee lover. Service is cool! It's small but it's a shared space so plenty of spots to sit.
When it's 5 degrees outside and there is a line leading outside...you KNOW it is a good coffee spot. I met up here the other day with one of my coworkers and it was amazing. Very clean inside, lots of seating, but also totally packed because they have delish coffee and blueberry muffins. I snagged us some seats and then we did mobile order pickup because it just seemed like that would be smarter instead of standing in the line, and it was a pretty good idea. I got an iced white mocha peppermint latte and it was delish. Def will be back to try more of their coffee and food!
Saw Sawada on Yelp's top matcha list some time ago and made sure I visited before work. A mix of user skill issues (ordering the military matcha latte) alongside my expectations being high made me disappointed. Typically when a shop has coffee in the name, it's probably expected their matcha isn't a highlight but purely based on perception, I think their other matchas would be tasty and authentic. Military Matcha Latte - after reading through the hype, I was pretty disappointed. The drink's camo appearance looked promising but in reality it was just an espresso with a skin (like that of a game, a bit pay to win). There weren't any earthy undertones present and the matcha may as well not have been there.

My Absolute Fav Cafe for Matcha (and in general coffee)!!!! It's a quintessential Chicago SPEAKEASY cafe! The whole vibe is low key cozy, casual, and chill with rustic brick walls with warm lights and community style seating. Definitely reflects the diverse and vibrant culture of Chicago! My go to coffee here is Matcha latte. The classic. This isn't your regular Matcha Latte. It is bold, not too sweet but delicious which is how I like my matcha lattes. So try it if you like matcha. Over time, I've tried military and black camo from their menu and I loved the earthy flavors of those as well. I've always found the staff to be super friendly. I was chatting with the barista in my last visit when I came to know they import the fresh matcha leaves directly from the Japan. Also, be ready for the long lines but the wait is truly worth it!!!! And if you're planning an extending visit, my advice is to choose seating towards the front as the cafe shares the space with Green Street Smoked Meat so towards the back, sometimes the smell of the meat can be strong! read more

Really loved the entrance and vibe here. It immediately sets the tone. The quality of the espresso is outstanding. I got a cortado, and it's easily one of the best I've had. If not for my low caffeine tolerance, I would've tried another drink on the spot. The staff at the front were super welcoming too. Big open space, great coffee, definitely worth a visit! read more

Was visiting Chicago from the west coast and decided to try this spot for coffee. Our gut told us to get there early and we got there right when they opened on a Saturday. Only 2 people ahead of us in line, but by the time we ordered, the line was out the door. Really good menu and lots of baked goods to choose from. Ample amount of indoor seating under strung lights, but there's also outdoor seating that looked nice! read more
Hip spot for coffee and hanging out. I had the brown sugar iced latte (Tokyo style). Perfectly good iced latte, on the sweet side, a little bit weak. $7 for a 16oz cup. The space is a big dark room with picnic tables for shared seating. Glad I tried it. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to go back. read more

My friends and I walked into Sawada Cafe, and to my surprise, it was packed. The indoor seating area was quite full. We ordered the Black Camo Latte and Green Tea Latte. The wait time was a bit long, but we were able to pick up our order after a few minutes. After looking around for a while, we finally found a seat for our group. The cafe has wooden tables with open seating, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy coffee with friends. I also noticed a few people working on their laptops while sipping coffee. Overall, I had a good experience! read more
Came across this place from social media and it was pretty packed when we came on a Sunday around noon! It was a bit hard to find since it shares the same space as a barbecue restaurant and the door is covered with stickers. The line wasn't too long when we ordered but continuously got longer after. I got an iced vanilla latte and it was pretty sweet and strong but good! I liked that I could taste the vanilla. There's shared seating with the restaurant but is plenty. Was looking for matcha spots on social media for my trip to Chicago and came across this one. We came on a Sunday around noon and it was a bit hard to find lol, short line to order which got longer as we left! I got the matcha latte with Tokyo syrup, which the worker described as a "brown sugar syrup similar to molasses". This was a pretty accurate description and the syrup made the matcha pretty sweet, that I didn't taste much of the matcha read more
Sawada is such an iconic coffee shop in the west loop and is rightfully a Chicago staple. I have been here a couple times and finally getting around to writing a review. They have a huge indoor seating area. The tables are mostly huge picnic tables meant for sharing. They are very popular for their matcha and source it directly from Japanese farmers. We tried their regular matcha with oat milk and their black camo matcha. The regular matcha was insanely good and when paired with oat milk, makes for the best beverage! The black camo was very impressive too. It comes with an espresso shot in your regular matcha. The espresso adds an extra kick which I very much needed on a gloomy winter afternoon. The only con is that the order and wait times can be long as Sawada is almost always busy. Ambience is very casual but I love it. It is also a very good place to come and work. read more

Gave this spot a try while in Chicago and tried one of the drinks they are known for- a military latte which was matcha and espresso. I have never tried a good matcha x espresso combo that I actually enjoyed until this spot! The drink was so unique and was perfectly sweet. Service was quick and efficient, despite a long line. The inside is super cool. They have sooo much room and tables around. There's an accessible bathroom for everyone. There's also a bar/bbq spot in the middle of the seating area which was also pretty cool! Parking was easy, a bunch of meters outside. read more

Ambiance of the place is nice. Very chill and laid back. Military matcha was nothing special at all. Ordered a chocolate croissant that was not good. We asked if we could have it warmed up and were told they don't have ovens. Basically ate a solid rock of bread with a whole piece of chocolate in the middle. I wouldn't come back. read more

No wonder this place is famous, we came here first thing in the morning and the line was almost out the door again! We tried the military latte, which was a bit too earthy for my taste but adding some sweetener helped. I got the hojicha pumpkin spice latte, which was a seasonal item. I think I drank the sweet part first and didn't mix it up well, but it was still quite good! Would want to go back to try the normal latte one day. Also the working space looks so nice! Great coffee in a great location. The seating area offers such a a vibe. I was so sad I couldn't get a picture of it lol. If your looking to bring someone on a coffee date to a place that, at first, seems like a whole in the wall then come here. The coffee was good. The service was quick and the people here are chill. I came here with a few friends Saturday morning and the line was almost out the door. It moved pretty quickly so it wasn't too bad. When we got closer to the front, we started to get curious about the menu because it mentioned things like camo lattes and "make it Tokyo style." The barista said they were popular for their Tokyo style (which is just their brown sugar syrup, but it's made in house.) Whenever I go to a coffee shop, I'm always happier when the syrups are made in house, rather than store bought. The latte was made perfectly, the milk was well steamed and the shot pulled amazing. Even the sweetness wasn't too much! My friend's latte had milk that had been overly steamed and it caused a lot of foam -- she did not enjoy that. We also ordered some muffins which were delicious and a ham and cheese croissant (which they can't warm up btw) The shop itself is connected to a BBQ restaurant and they allowed coffee shop customers to sit as well, so bonus for not having to brave the cold! Heard that this was place carries one of the best matcha lattes and was disappointed. I had their popular iced military latte with oat milk - a matcha latte topped a shot of espresso. There was no matcha flavor at all, just espresso and milk. My boyfriend got the black camo latte - a hojicha latte with espresso, and it tasted like mud water. Both drinks had the same color as poop water too. The line was super long on a Saturday. Please save your time and visit another cafe. read more

Came here with my mom and sister. Got strong drip coffee with oat milk, hot military latte with almond milk, iced military latte with 2%. Along with blueberry muffin, ham & cheese, Samoa donut and chocolate croissant Let's start with the drinks: the strong drip coffee lived up to its name, good quality and flavor. The hot military could've been a little sweeter and the foam was a bit grainy on top. The iced military was great! No notes! The baked goods: the blueberry muffin was one of the best we've had in any coffee shop!! Highly recommend. Donut was a pass as it was waaaay too sweet. Ham and cheese was good, if you need a quick bite it's worth it (albeit slightly overpriced). The service was exceptional. I fell in love with the gentleman who checked us out. He was very personable, welcoming and went above & beyond to help us while ordering. It's shared with a bar. Good music and shared table setup for great people watching! Pro-tip if you're having your coffee and baked good quickly, ignore the reserved sign. read more

Love the overall vibe here! Vibes are combo of industrial and street vibes, there are pillars around the bar area with imperfect paint and stickers replicating the streets outside it's so cool!! The military coffee is 100% worth the hype, I prefer it iced and with oat milk. It's not sweet at all which I love and has an herbally flavor. read more
We stumbled across Sawada Coffee one day because the line went outside the door. They serve specialty matcha & coffee drinks. I think the military latte was quite good, but the matcha flavor could've been deeper. The black camo latte was a bit too bitter for me, but they have sweeteners you can add yourself to make it perfect. Came here on a weekend and there was already a line. Tried their military latte iced and it was bold and delicious. Matcha expresso which was good. This place also has other restaurants attached to it like ramen. They have seating indoor and outdoor. The seating indoor is a little dark but when it's nice outside plenty of seating outside. Best coffee place in chicago 10/10/10/10! No skip menu, however this isn't your typical coffee shop where you can order and sit down to chat / do work. It's a heavy traffic coffee shop, but it is connected to a restaurant if you wanted to eat at the same time. read more

I found this spot as I was searching for coffee places via Yelp while visiting Chicago. The pictures and reviews led me here, Friday morning. The entrance door was not easy to find since I was not familiar with this place but it's a door is filled with stickers and tags. Once you enter, it leads you to a staircase to the shop. The place has an interesting vibe, industrial mixed with modern coffee and food hall seating. There was a line but it was not too long. Ordered the Matcha Military Latte with extra shot ($7.95). It tasted really good and enjoyed it while outdoor dining. The outdoor dining is like an alley way which leads to the street with interesting wall-artwork. I really enjoyed my experience here and highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for good coffee. read more

Cute spot, service was fine. Went here on a whim bc I had heard so much about their matcha. It's really bad. Like really bad. I don't know if they don't whisk it properly bc it has no foam and separates quickly. I got mine unsweetened because to me a good matcha doesn't need sugar. Oh this one does. It was so bitter and bad I couldn't drink it. And it was almost 10 dollars with milk alt and a 1 dollar tip. Do not waste your time if you actually like matcha. read more
Pumpkin spice is in season! I tried their seasonal Houjicha Spiced Pumpkin Latte today and thought it was ok. I didn't really taste the hojicha, but I tasted the spices and it was lightly sweetened. Thought I'd give their seasonal a try, but I prefer their signature military latte or matcha latte :) Also pretty cool that they make matcha cortado's! On a morning run downtown, my mother wanted coffee so I looked up places nearby and saw this on several of the travel lists. I am glad that we went there though it looked like a speakeasy when we found it, upon walking in we were amazed by the lighting and the deep seating. We took our matcha lattes and oat lattes to go since I had to get back but vowed to come back quite soon. My mom got a pastry which she enjoyed. This might be my new little spot when I visit family again. The place reminded me of the underground tea villages in California so much that I had to look up who owns this place?!?! And of course it is a partnership between Brendan Sodikoff of Hogsalt Hospitality (Au Cheval, Maudes fame) and Japanese coffee celebrity Hiroshi Sawada. I am almost embarrassed to say that it has been open since 2015 when I did live back in the Chi but I didn't know about this place. I did live in Lincoln Park though so... that part. When I go back I will try the famous military and take a seat to enjoy the atmosphere. read more

Yes you can sit at the benches inside to eat/drink items from sawada. The space is shared between sawada and green street meats. You can also sit at the benches in the alleyway.
Is Sawada really open in this time ? I went the other say and it was closed.

How is the noise level? Is it easy to carry a conversation in a group? Am I likely to find space for 6 people at 1pm on a Sunday?
It's a large space, so unless the place is packed you should have no trouble holding conversation or seating for a group.
Do they have non-dairy milks available for the lattes?
Of course! Almond milk, macadamia milk, and soy.
Where is it? There is a lot of construction and I couldn't find the shop.
