So surprised by how goood these lattes are. We tried cardamom, orange rose, and brown sugar miso. If I were to rank them, I still liked the cardamom the best, the nutty flavor is hard to beat. Brown sugar miso was also very good, but I'd prefer maybe a bit stronger miso/savory flavor. The orange rose was also very good, although I think my husband and I just don't really like fruity coffee in general so it's more of a personal preference. Vibes are nice and in an amazing area Barista are smart and recommended a pour over and noticed I'm interested in all this (they did not know I'm a reviewer) and gave me info on the beans. Was visiting in Chicago and I came across this coffee shop which seemed to be connected to an office building. Walked in and noticed the Chicago mural on the wall which was a really nice touch. The staff was extremely friendly and made great recommendations based on our likes. He suggested the chai tea with lavender which was hit the spot on a especially on the cold day it was. It is a combo that I'm willing to try again any chance I get. The spice with a little of sweet you couldn't go wrong with that ever. The roasted marshmallow with coffee was the second drink which the roasting of it was done in-front of you which was cool to see and then added to the drink for that sweet flavor and aroma. I visited this shop at least 3 times in the 3 days I was in Chicago. read more

Can't speak to the food. Espresso drinks are solid, I started going here after the mojo on lasalle closed, and while I still miss mojo dearly big shoulders is solid and reliable. The employees here are so kind, and friendly. Additionally they just make great drinks which is arguably more important! Ambiance is fine, a bit small, not sure if I'd have an informal meet up here. But I'd definitely grab a cup with a coworker her to walk around or sit in a nearby park/plaza. Prices are fair too, please go here rather than Starbucks or Dunkin - the drinks are both better and cheaper on average! read more

Came for the coffee. It was amazing. Smooth, flavorful, rich - great choice. Stayed for the scones. WOW! Seriously recommend the horchata latte or the marshmallow latte - great treat on a cold, snowy winter day in the city. For a light lunch or breakfast, the jalapeño, cheddar bacon scone is amazing - more the texture of a great biscuit. The staff is so friendly and helpful. And yes, they are abiding by all the current regulations, but in such a kind and low key manner. Easy street parking or walk from the train. Super clean lobby and line. Chill, relaxed and smooth music is always playing when enter here weekdays in the pre-work AMs. Which is perfect because I can't do Top 40 music without coffee. You must try their Signature Lattes: Marshmallow Latte comes with a torched marshmallow on the side. It's delicious and a sure treat. Horchata Latte tastes like the real thing. Gotta try it hot though! Made with rice milk. The Mocha Latte and Vanilla Lattes are smooth and not overly sugary like Starbucks. Overall my favorite coffee shop in the Loop. Large Sig coffees are under $5. Oat/Almond milks are $1 extra. They sell cold to-go cans of Nitro, Black and their "Hop It Up" coffee and also have Kombucha. read more

Millennial energy (not necessarily a bad thing). In a great location in the loop but really lacking character and comfortability. Bogus chairs and not a lot of them so clearly a grab and go type of place. Met up with someone here for a coffee and opted for the cappuccino which was quite nice actually. Not too milky and the quality of the coffee is there. The Al pastor breakfast burrito seemed interesting but I wasn't that hungry so got the overnight oats which were nothing to write home about. Overall, good place for a quick good coffee with standard prices. Not a great spot to do work, hang out. read more

My eyes have recently been opened towards coffee, after *cough* 41 years of life *cough*.  As a new coffee lover, I've been popping into cafes to try ALL the brews.  So far, Big Shoulders is my favorite in Chicago.  Everything about the place cries high quality.  The atmosphere and decor, service, coffee, latte flavor options, cool merch to purchase - all top notch (well, at least from a newbie's point of view!).  Great location (on my way to work). COFFEE: It was hard to choose between marshmallow, cardamom or horchata lattes.  But I opted for horchata.  (I have food grade cardamom essential oil at work anyway - so I could always add a drop to my latte if I didn't like it!).  But I did like it - and I'll be back for the marshmallow and cardamom lattes. SERVICE:  They were pretty busy at 8:40 a.m. but the line moved fast enough.  After a few minutes of waiting, the barista asked me what I ordered and then seemed confused because he hadn't gotten my order.  The cashier apologized for not giving it to him.  And he apologized for the wait, and gave me a card to redeem for a free coffee.  I didn't even have to complain about the mixup!  That's great customer service. FOOD: The old fashioned donut was delicious - just as good as Donut Vault's old fashioned buttermilk (but bigger!).  It looks like I need to try their breakfast sandwiches now as well. MERCH: For purchase, they had a variety of bags of fresh-roasted beans (yesterday's date), simple syrups, mugs, thermal cups, and the "cheap cups" (see my photo for the perks with these).  I already have bags of roasted beans from somewhere else, but when I run out I'm definitely snagging one of theirs! read more

I came across Big Shoulders on one of my business trips to Chicago but was unable to stop in at the time. I made a mental note and was glad to make a quick stop for a caffeine boost soon after I landed in Chicago on this trip. I ordered a macchiato, which was good and heavily caffeinated, exactly what I wanted - there are 2 espresso shots in the small and 4 in the medium. My one gripe is that when I attempted to order my macchiato, I immediately got profiled as a "Starbucks regular," which the barista later said was due to the large tote bag I carry on business trips, which I didn't appreciate. When I talked to the barista and corrected him, he was kind and explained that many customers confuse macchiatos at their coffee shop for the macchiatos at Starbucks, which I've also been warned about at other coffee shops... doesn't necessarily make up for the assumption made, but at least there was a reason... read more

I stopped in here at about 7:30 AM on a weekday and it wasn't crowded at all, though I couldn't tell you why because it was a phenomenal coffee spot with a cute seating area and great drink options. I tried the cardamom specialty latte and have no regrets. It had the perfect end of cardamom without the overpowering sweetness that many specialty lattes at other shops tend to have. I'm not sure if my experience here is entirely representative of the place. Don't get me wrong, the design of this place is clean, very natural, and gives you a very warm type of feeling. My roommate always comments on the unique plants here and wishes they were for sale too. It definitely isn't your typical coffee shop, because the atmosphere of the place is more spacious, calming, and not your standard chaotic and jam-packed Starbucks cafe. I initially came here to get their signature drink with the burnt marshmallow! But ended up coming on a blazing summer day and couldn't imagine the thought of ordering a hot drink too. Instead, I got the iced matcha which was a bad decision. It was straight up just sweetened milk, probably with just the tiniest hint of matcha in it. Disappointing since I've heard so many great things about this place. I'll definitely give it one more chance before leaving the city if I can and hopefully it will restore my faith in this place. read more
