The sign of a good coffee shop TO ME is if they 1) make their syrups in house and 2) don't charge extra for plant-based milks - they charge $1 for plant based milk - the honey in my honey oat latte was described as half honey, half water (so a honey simple syrup) - no working space, this is more of a grab & go shop, with bar seats and 2 small tables outside - /+small latte is 1 shot of espresso (could be useful for a late coffee when you don't want to be wide awake). This is the first shop I've been to that offered a single shot in a small latte. + if you like straightforward coffee this is the place for you + my half sweet latte was perfect. Some shops my half sweet latte is still very sweet + they have tea options + clean interior and friendly staff + extra shop of espresso is only $0.50 + honey oat latte was delicious + they sell their beans This coffee shop seems to fit the area, working professionals coming in for their caffeine fix and leaving. read more

Stopped by with a larger group. One plus is that folks were able to help us all relatively quickly, even with just two folks behind the counter. Another big plus is that there's plenty of seating! Con is that the environment is not very built for sitting in. It seems like their roasting machines were going strong in the morning, adding a loud airplane noise throughout the entire place, since the roasting area is not sound-insulated in any way from the rest of the cafe. Also, it's pretty dark here-- made it a bit hard to do any working. I had the honey oat milk latte, which was more honey and oat, and not a whole lot of latte. Wish there was a bit more coffee taste to it, but enjoyed the sweet drink nonetheless, even if not preferred. Got the hot honey oat latte. This latte was amazing. Super nutty with a nice foam on top, and the flavor was really balanced. Not too sweet with the perfect amount of bitterness. The space is cute but on the smaller side, so not ideal for long stays. Service was great though, the server was smiling and really welcoming. They're known for their Italian-style coffee blending, using beans from different regions around the world to create a more balanced and complex flavor, which you can definitely taste in the drink. read more

Caffe Umbria was exactly what I needed that morning. It was cold, wet and I wanted something hot, simple as that. Small and cozy spot. The kind of place where you slow down without trying. The staff was genuinely nice too. Asked how my day was and even recommended couple of pastries. I ordered a hot chocolate with an almond blueberry financier. The hot chocolate was honestly perfect. Rich but not heavy. You get that dark chocolate hit first, then it smooths out. Creamy. Warm in the right way. The financier was great. Nutty from the almonds, little bursts of blueberry, soft but not mushy. I dipped it into the hot chocolate (had to), and yeah... even better. No regrets there. It's a small place, but if you get there early, you might grab a seat with a really nice city view. Worth it. I'll definitely be back. Especially now that I know there's a solid hot chocolate spot right nearby. read more

We stopped into Caffe Umbria based on the great reviews, and it definitely lived up to them. I asked about the iced turmeric ginger chai latte, even though it wasn't listed on the menu, and they were still happy to make it. It was absolutely delicious, perfectly balanced with great flavor. We also ordered an iced latte, and the coffee was rich, smooth, and pleasantly strong without being bitter. Both drinks were excellent. If you're looking for quality coffee in Chicago, this is definitely one of the better coffee shops around. read more

Tried Cafe Umbria for the first time and really loved it. Switched it up from my usual cold brew and went with the honey oat milk latte, perfectly sweet without tasting sugary, and honestly one of the better coffees I've had in the city. Low-key reminded me of Honey Bunches of Oats in the best way. Staff was super friendly, too. It's not a huge space, so maybe not ideal for long work sessions, but I had zero complaints and would go back anytime. read more

Plus one star because they have unsweetened matcha whereas many places have sugar already premixed into their matcha powder. I asked if the large matcha latte had more matcha powder and the cashier said no. I ordered the small and asked for no milk, just hot water (americano) Gave them my thermos and they gave and charged me for a medium even though I asked for a small :/ Cashier tried to correct it but I was in a hurry. Idk why she thought I wanted a medium in the first place even though I asked for a small. Stopped by here to explore some coffee, was hoping they had Turkish/Arabic ones but nope. Tried their bicerin and mocha piccante. Barista was helpful in explaining what's in each and whether dairy-free options are possible/preferred. She said that subbing with oat milk would change the experience of bicerin, which is a dessert drink/shot so I went with the intended heavy cream, but did sub oat milk for piccante (mocha with cayenne pepper). Both drinks were quite small for the price. The mocha piccante was a little too light in flavor, and the spiciness mostly sank to the bottom, which gets quite powerful at the end. The bicerin was interesting, the foam up top is chill/cold, and the expressso/chocolate at the bottom is warm, so you get this lukewarm sip that's both a bit too thick up top and too thin at the bottom. Flavor was pretty dark, and the coffee flavor was really good, but I just don't know if I liked it much. I think I would've given it 4 stars if the baristas were more friendly, they didn't seem like they wanted to be there. When I said thank you and bye to them, they didn't even look up or acknowledge. Which is fine, maybe they are having a bad day. Given my experience here, I probably won't return unless something new comes out or catches my eyes. read more

Fantastic little coffee shop in a great river north location! I got hooked on the pistachio latte - I order it half sweet and it's divine! Smooth and slightly nutty. Service is counter friendly. It's quite small with very limited seating but does offer additional seating outside and in the enclosed entrance to next door building. Only thing I would change is to have it served in a mug instead of to go cup. read more

Maybe a 3.5 I stopped by for a morning coffee fix during my trip to Chicago mainly because it was close to my hotel. It was pretty busy on a Sunday morning. I ordered the iced lavender latte which came out to a little over $7. The latte was too sweet for my preference but I could taste the lavender at least. Just from casually watching them make drinks I assume that they use store bought/premade syrups which would explain why my drink felt really sweet. I came here with my boyfriend to get an iced drink on a summer day and it was very disappointing. When I went up to the counter to place my drink order I was greeted with a unwelcoming stare and awkward silence, which I responded with a hello and there was no response so I proceeded with ordering my iced tea. I mentioned light ice since a lot of places put a full cup of ice. When I received my iced tea, the tea was barely brewed which made the tea taste very faint. On top of that there was no ice in the drink which made the drink basically lukewarm. The staff here are so sweet and caring and truly care about the quality of drinks we offer you. On our first visit, we ordered the honey oat milk latte (a perfect balance of sweet and nutty from the oat milk) and caffè al pepe (a fun twist on a typical latte because of the dash of black pepper). On our second visit, we bought a bag of beans and tried one of the barista's recommendations: lavender white mocha. This wasn't on the menu but it's a combination that worked surprisingly well together. Wow, can't believe I just now found out about this place! A small quaint coffee stop located in bustling River North, Caffe Umbria can be easy to miss while strolling along, so it's a true hidden gem. The interior is bright and welcoming, and the manager was very professional and friendly while helping customers. Upon walking in, you're greeted by an impressive pastry case with goods sourced from several of Chicago's best bakeries including Aya Pastry and Beacon Donuts. There are many super creative and great-looking coffee flavors as well, and the shop also sells their own beans if you can't get enough. I couldn't resist ordering the blueberry pancake donut this time- it was absolutely delicious and was accompanied perfectly by a plain coffee, which was flavorful and robust. 10/10 highly recommend, will be back soon! read more

Both of the ladies working were wonderful, they helped answer all of our questions about the Matcha. You can get the Matcha unsweetened or sweetened. I did notice we had a .50 up charge for it being unsweetened which I thought was weird. The Masha had a beautiful green color and tasted really good. read more
