SAS has so much fabric that you need about 2 hours to see everything! It's awesome and the prices are excellent!

This place was recommended to me by a few people so I was extremely disappointed with my experience there on Saturday. It was my first time there and while I found the fabric I was looking for, the check out part was very rude. I did not realize there is a section that weighs your item before moving on to the cashier and was rudely told by this older man (maybe in his 70s) that works there that I need to get my fabric weighed. I let him know that I was waiting for the cashier for that. At that point he starting talking down to me asking if the fabric I was carrying was mine, I told him no and that I was trying to purchase it. He then condenscendingly told me to go the line to get it weighed before going to the cashier. He never greeted me or even smiled, also, he was not properly wearing a mask (I know because I was able to view his full mustache and beard). Not only is he endangering clients, he is also a very misearable man. You could tell the clients as well as his co-workers were all embarrased and tense. I decided to de-escalate the situation and thanked him for his help and he just ignored me. When I finally got to the cashier, I asked for his name, she said she could not provide names of the people working there. She then said she would let the manager know. In times of a pandemic, he should be nicer and grateful that he still has a job. Though that place could really use someone with better customer skills that makes the place more welcoming to clients. I will NOT be going back due to this experience. When I left the store, one of the clients was waiting for me and she told me that what the man working there did to me was rude and unacceptable. I thanked her, let her know I told the cashier and that I would add a review and encouraged her to do the same. Hopefully he is taught some customer service skills or gets fired. Their selection is decent, can always find something for an existing project...or find something for a new project. The selection keeps this review from being a 1-star rating. Whenever I have had a project, I'd always stop in. But the last several visits have been met with horrible customer service. At first, I thought it was a fluke. But when staff were rude and curt over the next several visits, I seriously reconsidered even coming back. I decided to go one last time, hoping for a better visit. My last visit was on November 23, 2016. I had searched for a specific printed fabric and when I couldn't find it, I asked a staff member for assistance. Having acted like I pestered her, she gruffly said, "We don't have it." I asked if it is something they carry or would carry in the future. She replied "Maybe" as she had already begun walking away. That's one way to end a conversation, I guess. I just ended up leaving. No amount of selection of fabric will make me return to a store whose staff treat customers rudely. I made up my mind that I will not come back to SAS Fabrics. I will gladly take my money elsewhere. read more

I have been going to SAS for years and love the fabric selection (especially the prices)! I went the other day to grab some fabric, and can't believe how rude the staff was. (This is not the first time I have had a negative experience with the employees). The gentleman that was helping me talked down to me and was extremely rude. I asked basic questions (for example: what is the smallest amount of fabric that I can get cut) and you would've thought I asked him to give me his left arm. He then directed me to read their sign hanging from the ceiling, but it actually says nothing about their rules as far as how much or little fabric that you can cut. I love this store, so I'm sure I'll be back soon. But I'm just hoping the employees will treat their customers with more respect. read more

Such a great place. The huge selection and prices are better than any of the fabric stores I've been to nearby. It's all sorted by type of material and there are some sections where it's random sizes of material (they do cut it for you if you don't want the entire size) folded in stacks so you have to search through that to find what you want. To someone in a hurry and who enjoys an extremely organized store, you probably won't like it. But for someone like me who loves to sew the endless boxes of material are a treasure trove. read more

Not the most organized place but I always find something. I am a quilter so always looking for cotton fabric. Love the fact you can get it for $3.99 a yard. Staff is always friendly. Lots of other options for fabrics if you need anything else. Also have buttons and ribbons. They carry petticoats also. Worth checking out. read more

So there's a lot of fabric that would use more for costuming or for something I would perform in on stage. They have a lot of selection for non stretch materials and embellished materials. They also have a lot of variety of ribbon. I like buying zippers here and they have some good buttons but not a huge selection. The prices are always so cheap! The only issue that I have with the selection is that I can't really find much for knits or fabrics that I would make, for example, an casual dress with. Most of fabrics here are non stretch or are shiny. The customer service varies. Sometimes I work with a person who isn't very friendly. Sometimes they're very friendly and great. I bought horsehair braid there, which I later found out was like $0.75 a yard, but the person who was helping me gave me the horsehair braid for $1.75. The only different between the two is that the more expensive one has a string running through it. I bought like 10 yards of the stuff, so since the lady didn't offer me the $0.75 braid, I ended up paying way more than I had to. Which I'm still rather upset about. And it was let behind the counter so there was no way for me to know :( But the fact that they have horsehair braid still says something about their selection. I couldn't find it anywhere else but online. In the end, it's a great place for me, because I use it for cosplaying, and the knick knacks and unusual materials come in handy. But if you want a nice fabric to make something normal out of, I wouldn't recommend this store. read more

I LOVE SAS for the great deals, but they definitely skimp on the customer service. It takes a lot to upset me as a customer, but this location is pretty bad in that area. The store is a little cluttered, and I don't believe they have air conditioning or heat. It's very uncomfortable in the summertime, but I'm willing to overlook that for their great, low prices. Now to the bad part - the customer service. There were about three people working midday during the week, and it took me about ten minutes to check out. They are extremely slow, and were chatting to each other while I was trying to finish up in line. I really don't appreciate when I'm in a hurry (as everyone is at lunchtime midweek) and the cashiers are taking their sweet time talking to each other instead of taking care of the customer. It's very disappointing and upsetting. If I were the type of customer to throw a fit in front of management (which I'm not at all) this would be the place to do it. I really feel like management needs to do something about this, because it looks like most of the negative reviews on Yelp are due to the poor customer service. The women working on Tuesday were very nice and informative! I went in with an idea of what I wanted to do but everything changed once I walked in the store. There were way more options than I anticipated. I'm very green at craft projects so all of the help that I receive was great! I will return for future projects. I almost detracted a star based solely on my experiences working here in the summer as my first job, a couple years before they got that nice AC. The owner is sweet and keeps to herself, staff is nice, all have worked there for years now. Seriously, like 20. It gets five stars because it is the closest thing to the feeling people must be describing when reminiscing about a candy shop that I have ever felt. And for staying the same. Those worn cardboard boxes have been there holding those patches, beads and other sew-ables as long as I can remember, and they always have the same ones, with a few additions here and there. The fabric revolves like crazy, but you can always find killer deals on pricey stuff like denim, velvet, or the embossed denim I got to make curtains, which has elements of both and was 5.99/yard. Poly cottons usually run about 2-3/yd, depending on the print. The walls are lined with rolls of binding, trim, and ribbon of all types. they have an entire isle of tassel trim. For Halloween, you can't go wrong. Finding a lot of some fabrics can be difficult, and there is no guarantee they will have the same fabric again... in fact, it's almost guaranteed not to happen. Then again, you might just go in10 years from now to find the same roll of neon orange nylon mesh you remember tripping over. read more

I visited this location this morning, and was very u impressed. The staff was very snippy and unhelpful. I seemed to be just bothering them, even when checking out. They were rude to each other and to the customers. I was searching for a piece of material that is very common in plain black, and the woman working told me "I just have to look" (as if I hadn't already). On top of that everything was just dirty and looked like the store had been swept with some of the material pieces. Unfortunately I think I will just drive across town to the one in Phoenix, for the better customer service. I like to keep my business local, but I would even rather go to a big box store like Joann's next time. read more

The women cutting the fabric had a rude attitude like she didn't want to be there and the man who works the register was rude when I asked a question and I overheard him giving attitude to another customer for asking a question . I have used SAS for all my costuming needs for a few years now. It is awesome! It has been perfect for sewing school show costumes. You can buy bulk fabrics, trims, and embellishments for reasonable prices. The staff can be helpful, but they are often busy. This is the kind of place where you come to get inspiration or great materials. It is not the sort of place where the staff is there to educate you. The merchandise is always changing, so you never get bored (no matter how many times you visit)! read more

Here's what you can expect from this location: Cheap prices on a majority of the stuff. Unique fabrics and trims that you need to rummage through. This location is smaller than the one on 19th Avenue. Parking was plentiful. Employees were friendly (at least three of the individuals we interacted with were friendly). There is NO public restroom at this location. Closed on Sundays. I would shop here again. read more

I love this location!! The stock here is so much better and they have couture silks!!!! Yayyyyy... no one sews with such refined fabrics anymore but I can find silk at $8/yd and I can make fabulous stuff to my heart's content!! Besides, I'm a fashion design student so I constantly am in need of fabrics. I saw them bring in tons of brocade, all beautiful prints, along with their section of "bridal" fabrics and trims. They price their stuff so low, and stuff runs out quickly so if you spot something that you like, you ought to get it because it will most likely not be there again. The sales people tell me that the majority of stuff is closeout, esp. the higher end material- silks, (which is what I always gun for). They have a lot of zippers, buttons, cords, lace, trims, notions etc. to choose from, all really super cheap prices!! I bought overlock needles for $1 a pack. I bought sharp and stretch sewing machine needles sizes 9, 11, 14, 16 at $1.75 each pack for 10. If you need size 18, this location does not have it but I know the one on Indian School Road does. I bought some embroidery scissors for $2 with cute bows on it and I found some really sturdy hook clasps made in England from probably the 70s or 80s but they're super strong and that was only $1 for 20 of them! There are tons of awesome deals in this place but you'd have to get use to the way they run things there. Customer service is very slim because their stock is constantly changing and they are objectively grouchy. You have to come in with a strong sense of what you want and focus on that. If you take everything with a grain of salt and just go there to get what you want and don't expect to exchange pleasantries and nice small talk, you'd be fine. Oddly enough, I've several interesting and useful conversations with customers and workers there before, but I never go there expecting a full breath of great service. I just go there for what I need to get and be on my merry way. That's precisely the attitude I suggest for you to adopt if you go here. read more

I love this place. It is THE place to go if you love making your own clothes or just love making things. It does take a few visits to truly get a feel for the massive amount of stuff they carry....but the prices are SO GOOD and they have things I haven't ever been able to find at Hobby Lobby, Michael's etc. I totally disagree with the comments about bad customer service or crotchety staff....I've always found the ladies there a delight, if they're not too busy just ask their advice or opinions, they have a wealth of knowledge and experience and I've always found them ready to help out a newbie sewer from England who finds it hard transferring from metric to imperial. It is an Aladdin's Cave....you never know what delights you might find there - though I have learnt to try and make a list before going, otherwise I could be in there all day touching fabrics and notions and dreaming. read more

I was feeling artsy fartsy one afternoon and tired of looking at bare walls in my bedroom. They have a huge, no, overwhelming selection of every kind of fabric and do-dad you could possibly need to make anything from a simple hawaiian shirt to lady gaga's next outfit. I would give this place a higher rating if it was more organized. Maybe because I'm a "tourist" to the world of sewing and fabric it was difficult for me to find what I had in mind. It's possible that most great fabric stores are like this and veterans to the sewing game can navigate them easily, but for us visitors to your magical world, help us out with a little more customer service and signs/labels. This is by far the best prices in fabrics and crafts you can find... Those are the words of my sister...not mine. I am not crafty with sewing, by any means. I tried making my own Halloween costume 14 years ago and one leg was shorter than the other. The darn thing cost me over $80 dollars! So much for saving money. I was here to support my sister in her reupholstering adventure. Try sorting through bins after bins of materials, only to find my cutie pie hiding in one of them. How can you not laugh...discipline went out the window when I busted out in hysterics. Okay, I was bored and so was he. My nieces take after my sister, they were so excited about finding cool stuff for their school projects such as scrap leather by the pound, organzas, peacock plumes and things I have no idea what for. My arm started itching uncontrollably. The same thing happens to me when I shop in antique, thrift or any bargain bin stores. "Aaagh, my arm is really itchy!!!" I complained, like a little child when they want to go home. "You're so embarrassing!" My sister tried shushing me. So, I tried to keep myself useful and even found a gorgeous reupholstering material for my dining chairs...then put it all back. It will end up in my donation pile someday, anyway. By the time we were done, I got a dozen earring backings for .25 cents. What can I say, I'm a cheap date. I am not apologizing for the useless information...this IS a fabric store. read more

If you're ever in Tempe and need some fabric, come to this place!! Chances are you'll see me throwing bolts of satin or cotton around and chatting with the staff who I've gotten to know over the years. There's some real gems here. Don't be fooled by the evap coolers and the oldish register. New and hard to find fabrics are here. I'm often the envy of all my designer friends because I find the neatest stuff and for CHEAP! Pay attention to the signs, they will lead you to what you're looking for, you may have to dig, there are literally piles of fabric in some bins. And neatly arranged fabric bolts in other places. There's also not very many notions, but we come here for fabric! Roll up your sleeves and see what gem you unearth in this fabric store from the fashion gods! I was referred to SAS fabrics by a co-worker, as I was looking for fabric to make into pillow cases. After researching the locations and reviews I decided to visit the Tempe location. I was hesitant because many of the other reviews said they experienced piss poor customer service but that was not the case for us. We came in on Saturday, and instantly my mind was overwhelmed with mountains of fabric. The fabric is not organized well, so in many cases you have to dig for it. This kind of reminds me of a thrift store hunt, which was totally fun. The yards of fabric ranged in prices, and many were very decent. We probably spent about half an hour walking around and seeing what was offered. They also had a couple of boxes filled with some patches that were neat. Check out was quick and all of the employees were friendly that we encountered. We will definitely return. read more

I have read other reviews that weren't so favorable and kinda went in with a little bit of an attitude. Maybe it was just being prepared. First of all, if you bring kids (hard to do, as the aisles are cramped, and they probably don't appreciate kids in there, but sometimes you gotta bring them where you're going), everyone go potty before you get there. No public bathrooms. We had to walk (in the heat of summer) to Pep Boys, as the gas station on the corner (same side) has no public bathrooms, either (really? isn't that the law of gas stations, to have public bathrooms???) Second, you know the fleece fabrics you can find at JoAnn's that have the Major League teams/logos on them and you can make a blanket? They have those here for less than half JoAnn's price. We have found many, many fabrics here. You kinda gotta go a couple times to get the layout down, but I found if you just ask (either a customer or a worker) if they have (insert random fabric or notion here), they will point you in the right direction. I have never had anyone be rude to me when I needed help. After the previous reviews, yes, I expected gruffness, so just go in expecting that and all you can do is go up from there, right? I haven't had any gruffness. Matter of fact, the last gal I got was so affirming and nice to my 8-yr old son that I find it hard to believe that anyone can say that the people are rude here. Last time we went, we were trying to find stuff to dress like Babylonians for Vacation Bible School. I found belly-dancer jinglies! we bought those to hot-glue on the bottom of our outfits (they were pricey, at $5.99/yard, and the jinglies came off their posts easily, so that is disappointing). So, overall, I really like this place. Not open on Sundays. You have to look for the Cricket store sign and it's right behind the Cricket store (pink building--we almost passed it the first time). Only reason for 4 stars is cuz of the cramped aisles and no bathroom. read more

I am a recent transplant to the Phoenix area and I can completely understand that we are not in a fashion hub such as NYC or LA but seriously. I recently graduated from a fashion design school back east and I know my fabrics however entering this place be aware you are waking into a giant mess. Yes, there are tables of fabric...in tattered pieces not even folded. While there are some bolts most of the store is composed of messy cheap fabrics. Their notions are not completely terrible but you gotta find them through the clutter. The kicker is, which I find at almost every fabric store, the old women that work at this place. After climbing though the rubbles of fabric, I find a corner that is labeled silks and contains some chiffons. Maybe 7 different colors/patterns. I go up to the counter and ask sweetly as possible "In the corner, are those all the silk chiffons you have?" Her response was "Oh that's just chiffon." I explain to her it is in the silk section and I am look for more silk chiffon. She responds "Oh ok, then yes that is all we have." Clearly she had no idea what I was talking about. I left right after. Place is alright if you're look for some cheap fabric to make a costume or children's dress up clothes but if you're wanting anything of quality, stay away. read more

Great fabric store. Lots and lots of fabric. I came here looking for some African fabric. I found much to choose from despite the saleslady's disappointment in the fact that they used to have more. I thought some of the fabric was pricey, but they have many discount bins that I didn't have time to look thru. I must say I love the variety and location of this place. read more

Love this place have been going my whole life. As a child my mom would take me there and the piles of fabric were amazing and wonderful, a dream come true. My mom and I still sew and go there often and find lace and fabric to alter dresses and make creations. I still love going and take my daughter now. Best prices on fabric anywhere in town. SAS is perfect for what it is; a discount fabric store. It's the best place to go for costuming and a good place for general sewing/decor. I have encountered a few rude people in the 30 years I have been shopping there - just as I have at JoAnns. The pricing is odd. They seem to have gone to pricing almost everything by the yard but they still have some fabric sold by the pound. It's not the least bit intuitive so until the fabric is actually cut you don't know exactly how much it will cost you - but you can be assured it will cost you less than at JoAnns. You will want to roll out and examine your fabric before you have it cut; frequently the fabric will be printed a bit crooked or have rough seams every several yards. Also most of the bolts aren't labeled with fabric content so there is some guessing. The parking lot is a mess, the store is crowded and not perfectly organized, the climate control is spotty, and the worst for me is the lack of public restrooms. But you will find me there several times a month in September/October and sporadically throughout the year. read more

This store has decent prices, but the customer service is so bad, I couldn't bring myself to give it above two stars. I was looking for a specific material for my mother in law and after looking around a while, I asked a rep to help me. She stared at me with aggravation and said "check over there or it might be over there" while pointing at two areas to search. I looked and found something that might work. Since she had no interest in leaving her station, I just brought the roll up to the front to get a sample. Another rep advised me to set it down since there was someone else ahead of me. (There is no one in sight except a man being helped by someone else) but I waited patiently. Then, a couple from across the store walks over and she helps them first. A third rep opens up across the counter, so I carry the heavy bolt over and she advises me I could have just asked for help instead of carrying it. She was pretty nice, but had the other rep helped me to begin with, I would have had her cut a sample. Then, the second rep who told me to wait for a customer who didn't exist sarcastically laughs and says "oh if I had known that's all you needed, I would have cut a sample for you." It was pretty infuriating. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

RUDE! My friend and I went to pick our fabric to reupholster my dining chairs last Saturday and we could not believe how rude one of the employees was. I wish I would have gotten her name but she's an older woman and her mom works there as well. Apparently we were standing at the wrong counter (the place is an absolute mess) and she refused to help us so her elderly mom had to cut our fabric for us. We will never return here. read more

Ive been coming here for a few years now. Great selections of fabrics if you need basics. Can sometimes find better deals elsewhere on fabric, but cant beat all the odds and ends. Ribbon, nylon straps, buckles, loops, gemstones, sewing supplies. Look it all over carefully, there are absolutely no returns or exchanges on anything! read more
