Fresh sushi and great service - a Long Beach gem Stumbled upon Sapporo last week and I'm so glad I did. This place really delivers on quality without any of the pretension you sometimes get at sushi restaurants. Started with the edamame and miso soup, both simple but well-prepared. For rolls, we ordered the California roll, rainbow roll, and their dragon roll. The dragon roll was the standout - perfectly crispy tempura shrimp inside with beautiful presentation. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, which is obviously the most important thing when it comes to sushi. The staff was wonderful. Our server gave us great recommendations (go check their special menu!!!!!) and checked in at just the right moments. You can tell they care about the experience, not just turning tables. The restaurant itself is cozy and clean with a nice sushi bar if you want to sit and watch the chefs work. We opted for a booth and it was comfortable for our group of four. Prices are very fair - we left full and happy without breaking the bank. I've already told several friends about this place and plan to make it a regular spot. I went here with my boyfriend for our anniversary, and I am so glad I spent such a long time browsing yelp to find this gem. From the initial yelp impression, Sapporo checked all my boxes: seemed like good atmosphere for dinner with warm lighting & aesthetic decor, a menu with lots of sushi choices, and overall had good reviews from over 2k people. Now after I've been, it was way better than I thought. The environment was so perfect for our dinner, the sushi (and miso soup) was DELICIOUS , had lots of fresh choices. We tried the snow crab baguette, which is a pesto, snow crab mix that sits on a buttery baguette slice and it is such a tasty combination of western and Asian cuisine. The food and service was well and attentive. When it came to the end of my meal, I felt neglected. I was a party of one wanting to eat food while finishing a few homework assignments in a new environment. By the time I had finished my meal and wrapped up my assignment my server was on her lunch break I assume while a new server watched the section. I was not checked on at all from the new server, but the busser on duty was pre bussing and checked in for water refills which I happy declined as I just wanted the check. It wasn't until my original server came back from her break that I would be receiving my check from. I was sitting in an empty table for over 30 minutes waiting for someone to bring the check over to close my table. I don't recommend coming here if you are a party of one as it can be difficult to flag a server if there is only one on the floor during a late lunch/early dinner time. read more

I dined here on February 18th and was seated at 8:00 PM as a party of one. The restaurant was not busy, and I was seated in a booth to the left of the entrance. After being seated, I was not acknowledged for approximately 15 minutes. At 8:13 PM, a white couple was seated in the booth directly behind me. Within two minutes, a server greeted them and took their order. During that time, I had still not been acknowledged. For context, I am a Black woman. I cannot speak to anyone's intent, but the difference in response time was noticeable and uncomfortable. I walked to the host stand to request a manager and was told that no manager would be available until the following week, which I found surprising. The server later stated she intended to come to my table after assisting the other guests but could not explain why I had not been greeted during the 15 minutes prior or why guests seated after me were attended to first. As someone with many years in the restaurant industry, I understand service flow. Being overlooked in a nearly empty restaurant felt extremely dismissive. I am sharing this feedback in hopes that management ensures all guests are acknowledged promptly and treated equitably. I also believe a restaurant should have a qualified manager available to address concerns in real time. I've been coming here since I moved to Long Beach in 2016 and it's my top spot for hidden sushi gems. Nestled in a corner of the Target parking lot, don't be fooled by outside appearances. They have an abundance of well crafted menu items to choose from and Sapporo on draft. I personally like their Nigori sake options and appreciate that they provide you with slightly larger size glasses than typical sushi restaurants so you're not constantly repouring. My favorite roll is the ex-girlfriend (a non-rice roll). Everyone who's had it will agree it's a must try. Other Notable choices: crispy rice with spicy tuna, garlic edamame, sushi blossom (no rice), the Otsukuri sashimi dish (easily split with 2 people), the eel with truffle (as pictured), cherry blossom roll, & truffle tuna (no rice). If you sit at the bar ask for Jason. He's an amazing talent who's been working for the company several years. His attention to detail perfecting all the dishes is something I find really entertaining to watch. We visited this location to celebrate my daughter's 25th birthday and her college graduation, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. The restaurant was only about half full -- just four tables occupied -- yet the service was extremely slow. We had to place our food order twice, and even after being told the issue would be corrected, the situation didn't improve. The waitress was difficult to get ahold of, not very friendly, and overall the service felt inattentive. We were told an item would be removed from the check, but then a mandatory large‑party fee was added for a table of only four people. On a $111.45 bill, the automatic tip was $20.06, which didn't feel fair given the level of service, though I still paid it. I wouldn't recommend this location based on our experience. A special family celebration shouldn't feel this stressful, and the service we received was simply unacceptable. read more

I love the 10 for $35 nigiri, the fish quality here is amazing and never disappoints. I have been coming here for a while and it's one of my favorite go to sushi spots in LB. Sapporo has BOGO buy 1 get 1 50% rolls, I'd suggest going Mon-Thurs, it doesn't apply on Friday or the weekends (heard theres drink deals tho) It gets pretty packed during the lunch and dinner rush but the servers are attentive and check in often. I stopped by Sapporo Sushi for the first time this past Friday, 6/14/2024 for lunch with my old friend. I ordered the following (price as of June 2024): - 2 Item Bento Combo (Lunch) - Chicken Katsu, + Salmon Avocado Roll (+$1) = $18.95 - Comes with rice, salad, miso soup - Overall pretty good meal. The chicken katsu portion wasn't too big and the chicken was a bit dry, but it definitely had a nice crisp. The salmon avocado roll was delicious, refreshing, and hit the spot. The miso soup was tasty and the salad was a nice small portion. The dressing was more of an asian, slightly ginger-y sauce, I appreciated some extra greens in my meal haha. - Coke - $3 Classic, can't really go wrong. However, the soda did taste a little tap water-y Customer Service: Great, the server was attentive. We were seated, and the server gave us the rundown of the menu. He took our order and the food all came at a good time. The server had a bright, positive attitude, which is so rare to see nowadays. We had an amazing meal at Sapporo Sushi! If you're looking for a place that offers super fresh ingredients at a fair price, this spot is a must-visit. We ordered the bluefin toro nigiri, sweet shrimp (amaebi) nigiri, and the salmon belly nigiri -- every single piece was incredibly fresh and just melted in your mouth. You can really taste the difference in quality compared to a lot of other places. One dish that stood out even more was the toast topped with snow crab -- my daughter absolutely loved it! It was rich, buttery, and packed with fresh crab flavor. Definitely a must-try if you visit. My husband and I have been a long time customer here as we lived across the street and the quality of the sushi/sashimi is always top tier. But lately the service has been poor which lessens the experience. I've noticed the restaurant is consistently understaffed during busier hours which makes it hard to be in touch with the server to order, close out, and making you wait longer. The front of house is disorganized and chaotic trying to manage to go orders, seat tables and run food. Sapporo Sushi is located in the Bixby Village Plaza, near Cal State Long Beach. You often see college kids at Target or Cha for Tea. We wandered into Sapporo Sushi because the pho shop next door was closed due to violation. It feels like everyone in the area was hit with health code violations and need to get to code (even Sapporo Sushi). The restaurant is well decorated. It has nice cozy lights with "cherry blossom" twinkle lights throughout the establishment. Kevin, our server told us the menu has changed recently, and they are still experimenting - so if there's something you want them to make, they can accommodate. I was still craving something "soupy" so I ordered a ramen. Even thought it advertised that the broth was boiled for 16 hours, I thought it was ok. The toppings were nice, but the broth and noodles were a little lackluster. My friend got the beef teriyaki stone bowl (I forgot to take a picture of). He was not impressed. He mumbled that the beef was too tough. I can't rave about the sushi (it's selling point). Overall, I think Sapporo sushi is another generic sushi restaurant in Los Angeles area. Service was good, although you could tell that this was more of a casual sushi spot as opposed to one where the servers and chefs are very knowledgeable about the products. They had a great menu with a lot of interesting rolls, including special rolls which I don't often go for (but these sounded good), and various other foods like rice bowls and udon dishes. We had the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, which fell apart a bit too easily but tasted okay. The Miso Soup was excellent and my son ate up the Shrimp Tempura which held together better than some shrimp tempuras. The Spicy Tuna was standard but the rice could have been a bit better on it. The Negi Hamachi roll (we had to ask for this custom) was quite good although would have liked to see 8 pieces like the Spicy Tuna, but overall no complaints on that. They do have nice booths and a few TV's and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Overall, I'd put this at a 3.5 but since the atmosphere was good will round up to a 4. read more

My boyfriend and I don't usually write reviews, but we felt we should share our experience from tonight. We often visit this location or Sushi Ai on 2nd Street, and this time decided to come here. We arrived around 7:18pm and noticed right away that the restaurant seemed short-staffed--one server appeared to be handling the majority of the work. It took a while for us to be seated and then again to be greeted at the table. Once our server arrived, we ordered immediately along with waters. When the waters were brought out, we were told it would take a while for the food to come. I wish that had been mentioned before ordering, since we had somewhere to be afterward and likely would have chosen a different spot. Unfortunately, it ended up taking a full hour--our food didn't arrive until 8:27pm. When we asked about the delay, the server kindly offered us complimentary miso soup, which we appreciated, but waiting over an hour for sushi is far too long. To make matters worse, when the food finally arrived, the taste was underwhelming and didn't meet our expectations. Overall, the service wasn't horrible given the circumstances, but the combination of long wait times and disappointing food left us pretty unhappy. We went with the "Cherry Blossom" roll, the "Benjie" roll, the "Lady in Red" roll, & "Black Pink" non rice roll. My husband let hwr know that with that type of attitude we will never be back. Take some advice and go back to what was working previously. Hire back some decent staff. Oh my gosh this might be our new favorite sushi spot! So fresh and delicious! We got the mackerel, salmon and albacore fresh two piece sushi to start. All three were so good but my favorite was the albacore! My boyfriend loved all three. We then had the island roll and the fire in the roll. Both were great! Came here to Sapporo yesterday and I had to say I had an excellent experience. The staff were really friendly and the service was top notch! Always made sure if we received all items we ordered. We ordered The ToroTaku handroll and it was the fatty tuna melted in my mouth with the scallions on top. We also ordered uni sushi and it was very fresh! My bulgogi was a bit salty but mixed with the steamed rice it had good flavor. The mixed tempura was not very hot and batter too thick for my liking. The California roll was ok. My husband thought the chicken teriyaki was good. My sister liked the miso soup and salad was fine. So some things were a hit and miss others were just ok. What wasn't ok was our waiter claiming I only ordered a two item combo when I asked about my missing tempura. He also thought I ordered spicy pork instead of bulgogi. But really, he should have just apologized and said he didn't hear me because all three of us diners heard me ask for three items, and he assumed my dish was pork when it was the bulgogi. read more
