The owner was very friendly and welcoming and the drinks were ice cold which was welcomed after walking around in the August heat. The only thing I wasn't exactly pleased with was the pricing. Are you serious, this place has been around since 2008? OMG! Used to work in California Mart and frequented a place called Flying Stick in the food court across the street. I loved the chicken shawarma from there, but they closed about 4 or 5 years ago, and I was so sad. Moved office since then and always craved Mediterranean around this area near Washington Blvd, but no good option here. And today, I find this Santee Falafel on Yelp and gave it a try for pick up. This place must be related to the Flying Stick, the menu pictures and all looks identical, and the lady confirmed it is! Maybe I never found it due to the Falafel name since I don't order that, lol. Today I got the chicken to try since I did not know this is the same food. Next time I'm definitely going for the chicken shawarma, or their lamb kafta should be killer too!' Only thing I don't see here is the baguette option, since the chicken shawarma baguette at Flying Stick was such a crack sandwich with the perfect bread and pickles. The main negative for me would be the street parking (was lucky enough to find one today and meter is $2/hour from 11am~4pm or something). But if you are in the area already or work around here, I would definitely go for this food! Either way, I am so happy to have found this place. I wish i could give a minus review rating. Although I would agree that the food was good but the rudeness of the owner and a young man at the register was so uncalled for. As paying customers they denied us to use the restroom and lied that they had no public restroom as they allowed several other customers to proceed to use the restroom. Then the owner yelling at us was absolutely maniacal to me, what in the professionalism is this for a business owner. As much as I love Mediterranean food I would not be returning back to this establishment. The falafel sandwich was loaded with falafel, cucumbers, tomatoes, hummus, and was generally quite good. For $6.99, it's also a decent size. The hummus, however, was not for me. As one reviewer pointed out, it had a strange fizzy, carbonated zing to it that I had never tasted before in any hummus. From the first bite to the last, it was the only thing I could focus on--my tongue felt like someone put pop rocks on it! After googling the phenomenon, I discovered that a popular trick to shortening the prep time of hummus, and making it creamier in the process, is to add baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). When too much is added or the beans are left to soak too long in the soda water, the resulting hummus has a distinct carbonated taste. This explains why so many reviewers like its creamy texture, though only some seem to notice undesirable fizz. Overall I liked my experience at Santee and will be back for more falafel. read more

Santee Falafel is a few small blocks from my office so I find myself here with my co-workers for lunch every so often. It only seemed fit that I finally write a review about it. Hidden in the nooks and crannies of the Fashion District is plenty of gems just waiting to be discovered. Santee Falafel is one of those gems. We stumbled here by accident one day while browsing the shops of the Fashion District. Ever since that first time I've ordered the same thing time and time again -- chicken kafta pita (ground chicken grilled on a skewer and then stuffed in a pita with salad, hummus, and tahina). The pita is served wrapped in paper and in a basket, fast food style. But this definitely isn't your typical fast food. The pita was big with large pieces of chicken sticking out and plenty of hummus sauce filled inside. The chicken is juicy and marinated with the perfect amount of spices. The salad is fresh and the hummus is delicious! The food is made fresh so it takes a little longer, but that's the price of quality, right? Walking down Santee is totally different then driving down Santee. When you're driving there's constantly stupid pedestrians darting out in front of you or terrible parallel parkers holding up traffic while trying to fit in tiny spaces. However, a casual stroll down the uneven sidewalk is a different story. It actually seems a little relaxing being protected by a wall of parked cars and the staggered shade of the trees. Each store is completely different while somehow all carrying the same stuff. Kickin' back with a warm pita makes for a great lunch break, that's for sure. read more
