What is this secret eatery hidden in the back of Over The Eight!? Do my eyes deceive me? Have I had too much cheap beer and tequila to see this little spot!? I was quiet lucky to be popping in for a sidewalk sale and then I noticed Santa Salsa and had to grab a nibble. What the hell is Guasacaca!? It's fricking delicious and addictive and I want a tub of it. The clerk described it as a cilantro sauce. I have googled this recipe and there is also AVOCADO! He served me a thimble and my tongue licked it up like a scifi Alien! I was thrilled to see veggie options and truly outside the box concoctions. I ended up with the Bambu, an asparagus and scallion hot dog with crumpled potato chip crumbs, mustard, onions, ketchup, cabbage and my new fave condiment, Guasacaca! It was served on a little slice of a skateboard for a plate. I like this Venice Beach feel to presentation and food. My dog was veggie friendly and junk food fun all at the same time. I was pleased and look forward to trying out more from the menu. Especially interested in the Psychedelic, portobello mushroom burger. read more

Yet another great spot for food by Rockaway Beach that is very heavy and non-conducive to going to the beach. If you want a great burger and are looking for something new after going to Rippers too many times (which is also excellent of course), then come try La Especial ($12), a fully-loaded burger topped with a fried egg, ham, avocado, onions, cabbage, crushed potato chips, american cheese, ketchup, mustard and Santa Salsa. Appropriately named, this is a very special burger indeed that will definitely make you happy. Make sure to get the excellent French Fries ($4) to go with it too, but the Tostones are also another great option as a side ($5 for 3 large, satisfying pieces). They have a little outdoor area next to the kitchen for sitting, which is a good spot to enjoy some of this great food either before or after the beach, as it is located just a few blocks away from the action. Pretty much everything is beige (really wanted to try the Venezuelan Fried Cheese Sticks too, but you gotta draw the line somewhere), but it all tastes really good and doesn't leave you feeling as gross as you would expect it might. It's definitely worth adding this to your regular rotation of beach stops, so hopefully it sticks around longer than the previous popup tenants. read more

I intended on going to a spot near by. When I noticed how empty it was I was on a search in the area. I found this spot and it was jumping with reggaeton music and party people. The food looked delicious online so I got a cheese burger, churros, fries, steak dog sandwich and a margarita and everything really went above my expectations. I was in the neighborhood and randomly walked by this place and thought I'd give it a try; I was not disappointed. The restaurant is small (so you might not get a seat) but really cute and nicely decorated. Santa Salsa very much feels like a new take on a skate bar and has really good vibes. The restaurant staff were also super kind and friendly - so definitely be sure to ask them for a recommendation, if they aren't too swamped. The drinks here are really tasty and strong - I got the spicy margarita and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food here is absolutely delicious as well, my friend and I ordered the Santa Salsa Hot Dog and the Parrilla Platter with carne -- both absolutely delicious and too much food for two people. My friends live in Bushwick and suggested this place. We came around 10:30pm and it was fairly empty so we sat right away. The inside is small, so I can see it getting packed really quick and people having to wait a while to get seated. In inside is so cute, there is an outside but we didn't sit because of cold. I'll be sure to come back in the warmer weather and sit outside. We ordered the yuca fries to start and share, they were OKAY. Then we all three ordered La Especial Burger which is only $12. Let me just say, it's going to be the best $12 you spend, and you're going to leave with a food coma/ food. Their hotdogs look amazing, which I need to come back to try. Oh, where to begin with this one. Let's start with the hours of operation ... 12 to 8 right? Nah, those are just mere suggestions, and are only to be taken as vague guidelines. Opened by 1:30, ah, maybe, depending on the day. Closed before 7:15 ... quite possible. Maybe their clocks are broken, or they tell time based on stages of the sun, whatever I won't judge, because it's all about the food. The menu is very promising, exciting even. Village Voice says best hot dog in NYC (though that appeared to be a 2014 mention to the Santa Salsa in Brooklyn, but no worries.) I went with the perro con todo, steak pepito, and the especial burger. While nothing was bad, nothing was particularly good either. What was rather surprising was the generic ingredients. Really Village Voice, best hot dog in NYC? Look at the pics, regular, cold hot dog bun, generic hot dog, cold, shredded American cheese, and some crumbled up chips on top. Don't get me wrong, it's a good combination, but it's by no means anything special. Throw some sauce, a kraft single, and some utz chips on top of your $1 dirty water dog, and you've got the exact same thing. The pepito steak sandwich was as equally generic. Regular run of the mill hero bread, weakly seasoned, what appeared to be a top-round steak, cut into large, slightly chewy pieces. If it wasn't for the sauce to help it out, the pepito wouldn't even make 3 stars. The burger was good, easily the best of the 3, which helped to make up for the pepito. But even with the burger, the reoccurring generic theme continued. The burger patty was clearly of the frozen, pre-packaged type. Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting Kobe hot dogs, and Waygu steaks from a beach shack food place, but I am expecting a little step up from what I could mash together on a hot plate from $10 worth of ingredients from C-town. Especially when you pay $6 for a hot dog, and $12 for a burger. read more

Not only is the spot super trendy and lively, the bartender Orlando; absolutely the coolest. His service was exceptional in addition to the food too. I went there twice, and I can only judge the place by who served me on these 2 different times. The first time was during Portorican day, the server was super busy BUT she was on the job, acknowledging everyone ti the best of her ability. Tonight, June 22nd, the server didn't pick uo the phone at it rang for at least 4 minutes (I called 3 times to see if their kitchen was still open, didn't want to stress them out as a last minute order). I decided to give it a try and got barely even looked at to have my order taken. Mind you, the place was not busy, it's a chill vibe type of atmosphere tonight. Even though I arrive well before a guy to order, the server, went on to put his order down first (...). No eye contact with me... he even passed me, again without looking at me, which (hello?) the basic thing to do when it comes to his line of work, and said "what do you want?" while returning his back, and not talking to me for at least 2 minutes. Now, I've lived long enough to recognize what this is about... I guess black women are second base customers for that guy. Another racist place down the list. How nice! My only regret about this place is that for some crazy reason I chose to split the hot dog rather than have a whole one for myself. Mistake! This place is small, cute, and very laid back - it's skateboarder themed. However, we had to ask three times for water- the only "drink" I ordered! Our order of two fries never came, and no apology or attempt to make it right when we asked our server. Our drinks were never refilled nor were we asked if we wanted to order more, despite them being empty. Two people in our party of four also would have ordered more food/another hot dog, but again, we were not really being waited on. All of this, and we were literally the ONLY table at the place, plus a few people at the bar, at least one of which worked there.
