They changed ownership a few years ago and are no longer a high quality community business. Prices are high, they price gouge you depending on how they feel (they charged me $15 for white claws one time and $20 another - same week), if you're short by 5¢ they won't make the sale, etc. the rolls they put their sandwiches on are stale and dry. I love delis in east village. You get amazing value from these types of places and Santa Barbara does it better than most. It's tough because Sunny & Annie's is just 5 streets down from here and that's one of my favorite places of all time. Regardless, I decided to venture a little further down the road and check out SBD. I'm glad I did, because I ordered a really good sausolito turkey sandwich with avocado. Was a really simple sandwich and simple in the best way. Turkey, lettuce, tomato, mayo, avocado, salt & pepper. Everything you can need on a sandwich and for $7, I'm a happy camper. ENJOY! read more

Rude and disrepectful. The two words to perfectly describe the employees at this deli. My boyfriend and I walked into this deli around 3:00pm craving breakfast sandwiches. Hungover and hungry, we walked up to the guy behind the counter and asked for a bacon, egg and cheese with avocado on a croissant. Then out of left field, we were given attitude that there were no croissants and if we wanted any we should come in the next day at 6am, then the guy behind the counter and the girl cashier talked amongst themselves laughing at us and saying that we'd have to wake up earlier to get croissants in Spanish (my boyfriend understands spanish btw). We contemplated leaving because they were so rude for no reason. But, we decided to just order so we asked for the sandwich on a roll. Then we asked for some ketchup and the girl cashier sharply told us that there were only two ketchup packets left. What kind of deli doesnt have ketchup?! Is ketchup restricted to the breakfast rush..because the deli also served french fries for lunch sooooo i was a little confused. Despite the positive reviews here, this deli was so unwelcoming, rude and disrespectful. This is my corner bodega, and has been for the last fifteen years. They opened right around the same time I moved into my apartment. Rafael (Rafi) the owner is a very nice guy. He's from the Dominican Republic, and spends fall and winter there now, so he's only around in the summer. I remember when his hair was black. It's just your standard corner bodega, but it's clean and the people that work there are all nice. The have a deli/grill and make a killer steak, onion and cheese pressed hero. This deli has the absolute best sandwiches in the neighborhood if not further! Inexpensive and totally high quality!!! When you ask for it hot they even toast the hero/roll! Ask for the grilled chicken or the steak sandwich for complete meal on a hero!!! All my European customers swear by this place for the closest thing to home! Great little deli at the corner of 12 and Avenue B. The Steak sandwich is awesome. Chopped up steak with cheese and onions. If you want, you can put in the works; Mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, salt & pepper. This bad boy comes in a hero and even that gets a slight toast. Breakfast sandwiches there are outstanding. Bacon is always cooked crispy so the BLTs are to die for. Love your buttered breakfast rolls? Get there quick because they sell out fast in the mornings. The price is cheap but don't fret, the quality is good. Nice selection of potato chips, soda and juices. Yes they even accept EBT cards, but man does it hold up the line. I always joke with the owners after a long wait of EBT purchases in front of me, not to worry, I have cash lol. Nice people there. For old school Hispanics, they sell Dominos there! Spanish dominos, not the confusing American ones with the double 9's and so forth. All in all is a great place for breakfast and lunch if you're a sandwich person. Went here today after the Dog Parade. Street corner deli, which doesn't look that inviting. Was surprised by the friendly and quick service. Had a bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel for $3.5 and it was delicious. They also appear to have a good steak and cheese. This place saves my life on a daily basis. The amount of 1) bacon, egg and cheeses 2) steak sandwiches 3) burgers and 4) sierra nevada 6-packs I buy here is borderline insane. Ralphy thinks he's swole but is actually looking pretty fragile these days. Be careful not to hurt his feelings - he has been known to cry. BEST SANDWICH IN THE CITY: Rachel or Steak Sandwich!!!!! The Cuban at Cafe Habana or the Bahn Mi at Sao Mai are top sandwiches in the city, but this place leaves them in the total dust with juicy meats, house-made sauces, crusty fresh baguettes, and oozing cheese. I consider myself a sort of sandwich connoisseur: I have had Reuben's from Montreal to Katz of NYC--Portillo's Chicago Beef or Puckett's Pulled Pork in Leiper's Fork; I've BLT's and Bagel Belts from every Bodega from here to Bogota, and sunken my gums into Barcelona breads and Hamburg buns. This deli earned 5 stars on their steak sandwich alone. It's the perfect mix of yummy bread, flavorful beef, and complementary ingredients that make this a sandwich I keep coming back for. A standard deli that surprisingly has one of the best mozzarella sticks i've ever had! And their breakfast sandwiches are good. You may think that a breakfast sandwich is a breakfast sandwich, but i find that 95% of the delis overcook the eggs til they're dry AF. Not these guys, perfectly made and still moist. There was a time where this Deli was the cornerstone of the neighborhood within a 5-7 block radius for years. To most till this day that is probably true but its most recent renovations gave it a very gentrification like feel to it. It kind of lost it's feel. It's touch. Prices skyrocketed. The sandwiches specifically the Philly Steak, a popular sandwich for many years doesn't taste the same as it use to. Even the Deli Guy who makes it and cooks it behind the counter takes orders with a nasty attitude and vibe of disgust. In my opinion, it's greatest moments was when there was glass all over the counter displaying every single candy and chocolate on display. When the owners were not only taking orders but making sure everything was great. When Big Ralph was making the sandwiches along side with his Brother/Cousin tag teaming afternoon rush instead of being a cashier. THOSE WERE THE DAYS! Although with time comes change, this was one store that didn't need a major overhaul at all. It had character. Now, not so much. read more
