We heard so many good things about Sandbar and made a reservation June 24. We were going with elderly friends (in their early 80s and late 70s) we hadn't seen for quite awhile. We live about an hour and forty-five minutes from the restaurant. Fifteen minutes before our arrival we received a email from openTable informing us that they had a issue in the dining room and weren't open, that I didn't see until later that night. Who checks their email on a regular basis while driving? No text, no phone call! I understand that unforeseen things happen, but they have no excuse. They knew at least an hour before our reservation time that they were not able to accommodate guests that night. The reason I am taking time to write this negative review is that our friends arrived in Cold Spring Harbor an hour before our reservation to window shop and walk around the town. They passed the restaurant and knew about the problems that the restaurant was experiencing and called us to inform us of the closure. This is something a decent establishment should and would do. Neither our friends or my wife and I live in the vicinity of Cold Spring Harbor. It was a Tuesday night, when many restaurants are closed. What was going to be a lovely night with dear friends, turned into a game of survival trying to locate another open restaurant that could accommodate four on such short notice. We came here to celebrate our engagement! Overall a very nice and lovely place. Our server, Marco, was outstanding. The crab cakes were 100% and we'd order in the future. Main downside though: the scallops were underwhelming, and for $42 we expected a little more (even though scallops are expensive in general). They undercooked the scallops slightly and the meat "pulled." We sent it back and they fixed. TLDR: appetizers are great, avoid the scallops, the other entrees sounded wonderful. I've come to Sandbar a few times now, and always have enjoyed the experience, so I thought I'd share what is TRULY special about this place. The Chickpea/Yucca fries are the most amazing I've ever had anywhere I've eaten, the reason why we would come back are for these, and it makes it all worth it. We've also had their thin crust pizza, which is flavorful and delicious, the salads are alright, and the mains are also good as well. The service is very friendly, professional, and accommodating on whatever you need, so that is always a plus in my book. Second time here and it's consistently good. Fish tacos with grilled Mahi were pretty good although the fish was cold but the quality was fine. Crab cakes were ok a bit mushy. I haven't been back to Sandbar in a while. The place is definitely crowded even though we had a reservation. We managed to sneak a cocktail in while we were waiting for friends. We had the spinach & artichoke dip with pita & meatballs for an appetizer they both were delicious. We had a long wait before dinner was actually served. The waiter drop off my Frutta di mare with black ink pasta & (not spaccatelle) pasta which is mentioned on the menu. Thank goodness I like black ink. I order the full portion which contains very little seafood & sauce. The other couple had mussels & taco which they liked. The men ordered Salmon for dinner & we asked the waiter what it came with & they did not get what was told & it was to late to get side dishes after it was served. My friends and I have been coming to Sandbar for a long time during happy hour on Mondays and Tuesdays and absolutely love the staff and the food. The spicy tuna crispy rice is amazing! This restaurant is beautiful. The prices are high but well worth it. We went for lunch on a weekday and the place was full. We ordered cocktails, which were great. For appetizers we got the duck tacos which were so good that we ended up ordering another order at the end to take home with us. We also got the lump crab cocktail appetizer which was amazing. For the main meal we each got a lobster roll- one hot and one cold. They were both fantastic but the hot was the clear winner with the large pieces of lobster and buttery toasty roll. The fries that came with the lobster rolls were salty and crunchy and perfect. The server was friendly and attentive and did his job well. The manager checked on us frequently. This spot is outstanding. I made a Valentine's Day reservation for my wife and I. The pre fix menu had plenty of options and honestly the portion sizes were generous. The food, desert and cocktails were all high quality, delicious and well beyond worth the money. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Excellent restaurant in Cold Spring Harbor. James is an excellent manager. Appetizers are delicious. White gazpacho is a wonderful cold summer soup. Fluke crudo is fresh and flavorful. The chickpea fries were excellent and the sauce has a little heat which was nice. I loved the duck duo, the skin was super crispy and the sweet pears paired nicely. Just moved to the area and was excited to try some local restaurants. Sandbar came highly recommended, and we made a reservation for our anniversary. We walked into a packed, fun, and lively restaurant and were seated quickly. That was awesome. We immediately were asked what water we preferred and then that was it... It took 5 minutes for the water to come, and then another 10 minutes for someone to take our order. When the food came it was delicious, but our experience was plagued by a severely anemic wait service. We frequently observed that the dining room had no service member in it for minutes at a time. If the service was better, I would be giving a rating of 8.0 or greater but the service quality took so much away from the overall experience. We will most likely return to give this restaurant another chance. read more

Went the other night with my girlfriend for our 2 year anniversary. The interior decor was very cute, reminded me of the boathouse I went to as a kid in LBI. As for the food, everything was amazing. We started with the pizza and a salad, and I got the burger while my girlfriend got the gnocchi. I have to say, while the burger was good, when I tried hers I really felt like I made the wrong choice, LOL. Service was also very warm and welcoming, and it was much appreciated to see local breweries on their drink menu. Scratch my previous review. The manager is uptight, unfriendly and couldn't care less about your experience. He struts around with the most vile and arrogant attitude, occasionally pausing to chitchat with the regulars that have managed to avoid the Betty Ford clinic. Rest of staff is equally awful, slow and dismissive. There's a really nice male busser that's been here forever and is more qualified than any other employee. It's depressing. Their polenta fries were amazing, the ravioli was delicious, as well as the farro bowl! I also loved the wine selection. It was worth the trek in the rain from NYC to come to the Sandbar! Between the both of us, we had duck tacos, chickpea fries, burger, bucatini and meatballs, and mousse cake. Duck tacos had excellent flavor. The chickpeas fries were phenomenal. Fluffy inside, but still crunchy on the outside. Accompanied by outstanding aioli. Meatballs were juicy with all the right flavors. The burger, which first came out a bit raw, was decent. First time at Sandbar and it did not disappoint! We made reservations about a week in advance and when we arrived, we were seated promptly. The atmosphere was up scale and cozy. The decor inside was a combination of both modern and industrial. The hostess and servers are very polite and friendly. Although this visit was during COVID, we felt safe. We started with a drink each, a Witches Margarita and an Baked Apple Old Fashioned. We were delighted to find out that the drinks were strong and not watered down like many other places. We ordered the Manhattan Chowder and Sandbar Salad to start. The portions were good-sized and they were flavorful. For entrees, we got the duck and halibut. The fish was done just right, but the duck brought our experience to a whole other level. Not many restaurants can serve duck this way and we were so impressed with the taste + way it was done. Highly recommend Lastly, we usually don't do desserts but this time, we were curious. The creme brûlée was done just right. We finished our dinner with one more drink and a double espresso. Wow! What a great experience at Sandbar. Somehow we had not made it to this restaurant before and chose to come here for our anniversary yesterday and so glad we did. Everything was perfect! The restaurant is beautiful! Simple, light, tasteful, elegant,and yet still casual. Service was impeccable: friendly, and very attentive without being disruptive. Waitstaff checked on us just the right amount, filled glasses without having to ask, brought everything in timely manner. Warm crusty bread and butter on the table. Menu is small but has enough options for vegetarians/ pescatarians. Cocktail was made perfectly and and a good pour.Food was delicious and decent portions! We shared a salad, and they brought it out already divided and it was a good size still. Dressing was amazing! Ordered dessert , the warm ricotta donuts, which were scrumptious, and then they brought out complimentary champagne. Such a nice and thoughtful touch. We were heading for lunch preferably outdoors when we came across this restaurant that had street side outdoor tables. After about a slight struggle finding parking, we were seated outside at an open table with an umbrella. What was amusing for me is that I never saw the inside of the restaurant until I decided to utilize their rest rooms. The dining room and bar had an upscale sleek appearance with a nautical flair. It was quite an elegant ambience that I did not expect since once I entered the restaurant. We ordered the steel head trout that resembles and tastes like Salmon along with the daily special omelet. Our lunch entrees were very good, but the only issue was the service which was a surprise since the restaurant did not seem very busy. I am assuming that might have had a shortage of waiters or we were just forgotten. But that is not going to prevent me from visiting this restaurant in the future. Overall this was a very good visit. Our waitress was incredibly sweet and the place was gorgeous inside. Also, the bread and mustard aioli was the best I've ever had. I removed a star for a few reasons - the restaurant wasn't very busy but it felt like the food took a long time to come out, the food was very good (not great though- we had the Lobster Benedict, power bowl and pigs in a blanket), and the prices felt higher than most places (and I live in NYC) - e.g., $28 for Lobster Eggs Benedict, $16 for a cocktail. Side note - I wouldn't recommend the outside dining, we passed it and the chairs looked very uncomfortable (very, very low) and the ambience just wasn't worth it - you're overlooking Main Street and a parking lot. For brunch, I'd recommend Salted On the Harbor in Northport over this place, based on the food, prices and outdoor dining experience (view of water). That being said, I bet this restaurant would be the winner for dinner though based on the menu options and inside decor. read more
