Really rude waiter, she gave us (party of 4) a dirty look when asking for more time to order, she talked to us with a really cranky attitude, and she definitely looked like she didn't want to be there. First time visiting. Came in, no one greeted us, one lady pointed to a table. The waitress came over and just asked us for our drink order, no hello, no smile. I ordered chicken fried steak breakfast, my daughter got pancakes. The meal was very large, I ate about 1/4th of it. The chicken fried steak was flavorless and so was the gravy. The hashbrowns were soaking in grease, the scrambled eggs were good. My daughter said her strawberry pancakes were very good. This place did not disappoint. I'm always in search of new spots to try out and have heard highly of this small local breakfast spot. The staff was pleasant and the food was delicious. It was crispy, fresh, delectable and done perfectly. I got the mushroom omelette , country potatoes and a pancake. The omelette was so light fluffy and cheesy. The potatoes were crispy and done perfectly. The (small) pancake was not very small, in size or flavor, it was delightful. I can't wait to come back to this place when we get to sit inside. My partner and I stopped in for lunch. He ordered the linguiça sandwich and I ordered the chicken fried steak sandwich. I'm a sucker for chicken fried steak especially if it includes eggs and gravy! My sandwich is OK but his linguiça sandwich was smack dab, down right good! I love chicken fried steak, but this one was very bland and lumpy. The waitress said they don't deep fry them, but it tasted like they fried it in a pan or something with oil. Biscuits and gravy were big and bland. The eggs were regular eggs cooked like I wanted. I opted for tomato instead of potato and they gave me a lot of tomato. That was unexpected. I liked that. They were pretty busy so I didn't expect quick anything. I'm glad I tried this place so that now I can enjoy trying other restaurants. My fiance and I were looking for a place to get a hearty diner-style breakfast and finally came across Sam's Cafe on Yelp. We live in East Modesto so Ceres isn't far to go eat, and we were up for a mini adventure. When you walk into Sam's, you immediately get the sense that this is a very local joint, with lots of regulars, and just a very Americana, down-home ambience. No need to dress up here - it's a "no frills" environment in the best way. Waitresses were moving around the place so we just sat ourselves at a very large booth. You have the option of a table our booth, and we came in about 11:30-noon, and there were enough tables open to choose from. No one really seemed to rush over to us so my fiance got up and grabbed menus. Once we were browsing, a waitress quickly came to take our drink order, and shortly after, another waitress came to take our order. My fiance and I were sitting on the same side of the table, so she sat right down across from us to take our order. Again, that family-style feel. We ordered a French toast combo and an omelette combo, and they came out very fast, maybe 10 minutes. The sausage and county potatoes hit the spot, the garbage omelette was good - we went light on the cheese which was a good choice. We hung out for a bit just chatting and eating slowly, and again, no one bothered us. We did have to make an effort to flag a waitress down for waters, so that was the only downside. Overall, this place reminds of Luke's Diner from the old TV show "Gilmore Girls." YouTube it if you're not familiar. Very chill, good diner food, fun people watching, and we would come back. When I moved to Ceres, many people told me to eat here, but then it burned down. 15 months later they are back in business and my counterpart and I dropped in for breakfast. Omg, amazing! This place was pretty busy when we got there, but they got us in pretty quick. We sat at the counter, which isn't always a good idea because you see things that you don't want to see. The food was fresh and plentiful. The workers were nice and the service was quick. The servers would go out to the tables and take orders and food. They were touching contaminated surfaces then returning to the counter where they would handle toast and English muffins etc. w/ their bare unclean hands. This was after touching condiment bottles, dirty plates, credit cards, their cell phones, etc. The simple fix would be to use plastic tongs or gloves when handling food. For this reason, I will not return. Especially w/ the deadly viruses that are going around right now. I hope mgmt sees this and provides training because this is a nice breakfast place. read more

Food was not that exceptional and came to our table cold. The only Caucasian waitress there was rude and condescending. When asked for bags to put our boxes in she returned to the table after approximately seven minutes and threw them at us. When I spoke with the owner, Sherrill Peterson, concerning that particular event, her only response was that this particular waitress did not work Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays. At this point, I knew I was wasting my breath because the whole operation was very unprofessional and the owner proved that by not stating that she was sorry that we had such an awful experience and that she would speak with the employee. After speaking with this owner, she returned to this particular employee stating everything I shared with her. The waitress came back to our table preventing us from trying to leave because she had to let me know her vile thoughts. When the waitress continued to barrage me and threaten me, she did this in front of the entire restaurant and all of its patrons. I felt like she was such a heathen and certainly had not been raised with any respect or manners. I would never patronize Sams café in Ceres California again. read more

I used to love this place. I still love the food, hence the two stars. Its the bad service that keeps this place from receiving 5 stars. Most of that bad service comes from the woman behind the cash register. She has a toxic attitude that has gotten worse over time. Been coming here for years, but unless something changes I will not be coming back. I will miss this place. read more
