At first, I thought this might be one of those neighbourhood local bars where only locals are welcomed. But I was wrong! The bouncer was welcoming and friendly. The bartender was also super friendly and attentive. The bar had a local feel & it was nice. The food was surprisingly good! I got chicken tenders and fries. Perfectly crisp and not oily at all. The best, juiciest, tastiest slider for those who can't handle a big, fat burger here, which are just as incredibly tasty. Bottomless fries are always freshly made to order and are delicious! The location is fun and every time we walk in these same waitresses have been here for at least the 4 or 5 years we've been coming in. They're always friendly and very attentive. It's 102 degrees outside, we were walking trying to find a bite and decided to try Sam's... we walked in and we didn't know, with Covid, if we were suppose to seat ourselves or wait so we waited for 5 minutes by the door and when no one said anything we decided to find a table, we did, but none of them were wiped clean... then after about another 5 minutes our server came over and asked what we would like to drink, with it being so hot we only ordered water. We waited about 5 minutes with no water but watched as the tables around us got served. I got up and asked for water again, and then again... finally after 20 minutes we got water. The table behind us, who got there after us, had their food by this point. My boyfriend wanted to do their burger challenge and was super hyped about it, so she rang in the order but never asked me for my food order. So, his food comes, and she starts to walk away, not mentioning anything about the challenge and still didn't ask for my order. He started the challenge, we weren't given a timeframe and she never came to check on him, didn't bring water, extra napkins, or anything. We were really hoping this was going to be an exciting thing, as that's what we've heard from previous people who have done it, but it completely sucked. We had to get up to ask for everything we needed... while watching her go to surrounding tables and check on them, fill their water, bus the table, etc. It was a bit insulting to watch her cater to others while we sat there waiting with no communication and it was just disappointing. I work in the industry as well and understand it can get overwhelming or you forget stuff... but the important part is if you mess up, forget something, whatever it may be.. own it. Own it, apologize, and do better. Because at the end of the day, the food, drinks, etc can be outstanding but it truly comes down to the level of service you receive while dining out that determines your entire experience. read more

This was one of the worst customer experiences I've received in Seattle in over twenty years. The service here is on par with a jack in the box. We sat in the bar and they told us to wipe down our own table before they would take our order. Not only did we clean up the table from the party that sat down before us, but the bartender had the worst attitude. I plan on telling my colleagues in the Seattle area about the horrible service we received from the staff. Management should take a look at their internal processes before they continue to operate in the South Lake Union area. Shame on you Sam's, Shame on you. I was happy to get there, only to find the bouncer at the front had an enormous smile on his face while he preemptively blocked me while I was trying to pay them the ridiculous cover charge. After that, he very condescendingly said, "we are at capacity" with a very pleasing look on his face as if he was happy to say it to me. I have eaten here several times and each time I have been happy with the food. The burgers are juicy and messy just as they should be (so get plenty of napkins) and the fries are hot and crispy. I ordered the 50/50, but after tasting the mini slider, I wished I would have just gotten the non-fancy burger. I like a simple, delicious burger and the slider hit the mark. The 50/50 was good, but all the fancy toppings and the 50/50 patty were a little much for my tastes. Two of my friends were adventurous and got their burgers chimichanga style. The Mexican burger came out good, but the Chili cheese burger not so much. The chili was stuffed inside instead of poured over the top of the chimichanga and you really couldn't tell it was there. On St. Patrick's Day, a 65 year-old relative who was visiting from out of town decided he wanted green beer. It seemed to tricky to find on Capitol Hill, but early in the afternoon, we passed Sam's Tavern, proudly advertising $2 green beer, and decided to return later that evening so he could have his St. Patty's dream come true. While the group was detained finishing dinner, this 65 year-old man decided to just go grab a green beer on his own and walked over to Sam's. Being deaf in one ear, he misunderstood the "bouncer" (most places have doormen, but Sam's has a "bouncer") about showing ID (did I mention he is a senior citizen?) and thought he was able to go on in. He walked on up to the bar, only to have the large bouncer come and GRAB HIM BY THE COLLAR, drag him through the establishment and shove him out the front door and onto the street. Really, Sam's?? To give them an opportunity to avoid yet another negative yelp review, I decided to return later to have a conversation with the manager, (who reeked of booze). With a bit of a smirk, he said, "Well, you have to show ID to be in a bar." What a stand-up guy! He did later relent a bit with a half-assed attempt at apology, stating, "I'm sorry he had a bad experience," when all he needed to say was, "I am sorry our doorman acted like an idiot, tossed him around, and embarrassed him." He did add: "Is he still outside? I'd like to make sure he gets service." As though he would ever go back in there. Stating that you're sorry someone else feels bad, isn't actually taking responsibility or apologizing for anything, hence, this yelp review. I get that it was St. Patrick's Day when the idiots really come out to play, but the doorman's attitude was inappropriate and the on-site manager could not have cared less. read more

It was alright, not super strong which runs extremely contrary to the entire thrust of a Long Island, and whoever was behind the bar was paying minimal attention as some drinks coming out were all coke and some were all sweet & sour mix. Whatever, though. Our very attractive, very inept waitress went missing, which is not a small feat in a place this size, so I was able to ruminate on these liquid inconsistencies for a decent chunk of time. When she reappeared I ordered a cheeseburger, as did my dining companion. Two cheeseburgers. No special requests. Easy, right? Wrong. This apparently caused a complete brain meltdown. Twenty minutes later, out came ONE burger. I cocked a brow and casually wondered whether the other one might be following? But you wanted to share a burger, explained the waitress. Which was of course news to me! As much as I appreciate people trying to anticipate what I want, it doesn't exactly make sense when I've already told you what I want. She eventually conceded, put the order in correctly, and the second one came out fairly quickly. The burger was pretty decent, big and sloppy with lots of pickles; the fries were forgettable aside from being oversalted. If you're into the Average Burger Experience and attractive ladies, Sam's makes a whole lot of sense. If you're indifferent to either or both, and you find yourself in here - well, it's not great. With all the great options in the Pike/Pine corridor, I'm not sure Sam's is a standout place but it's certainly worth checking out and seeing for yourself. This casual hang out has great burgers, tall pours, and ostentatious drinks. (Have you seen the Bloody Mary that has a slider as a garnish?!) On busy nights there's security and my interaction with them was super polite. Because the neighborhood is busy, the bar is busy. Expect it to be more crowded on weekends, but that can be good if you're on the prowl, looking to socialize, or if you just want to be a part of a lively atmosphere. Not a huge space, so perhaps not ideal for groups larger than 6 people. Easy access to (very limited) street parking and some nearby paid lots. Perfect spot if you like casual, slightly divey, but lively. read more

The décor of Sam's might be the first thing you notice and it appears to be a total rip-off the décor of Linda Derschang's Seattle icons (Linda's, Smith, and King's Hardware.) The worst part of the décor for me is that the taxidermy/ lodge thing isn't even appetizing in the first place. Do I need to describe how bad the burgers and fries were? Quite simply, they were not edible, and we sent them back. Luckily the waitress was professional enough to ask what was wrong and to take them off the bill. They were very busy on the night we went, but all of the staff we interacted with were friendly, prompt, and knew the menu well. I won't be back, not even for beer, as the draft list was lacking. Goose Island ales are tasty, but I like my hometown heroes more--NW IPAs are amazing with burgers, and yeastier beers are not a great complement to the type of food served here. read more

The shady "Bloomspot Tax" gets them a -5 stars, but unfortunately negatives aren't allowed on here (hence the single star). Now that yelp math 101 is over... I bought a Bloomspot deal because I had seen the juicy lucy burger on their menu. Little did I know the horrible experience that I had just locked myself into. The juicy lucy was not a patty with melted cheese inside as one would expect, but rather an average burger with a huge smear of cream cheese on the Safeway bun. I love cream cheese hot dogs, but I had to scrape the huge amount of it off the burger just to get through it. It was just not good... had I not been starving, I wouldn't have finished it. The Sams burger was over salted and the steak fries were less than memorable. Red robin burgers are better... and that's a sad statement. The ribs were likely baked and dry/flavorless. When I went to pay, they put a $3 "Bloomspot Tax" on the bill. What the hell is that? No where in the T+Cs do they state this. Along with the food, these deceptive business practices certainly won't help them earn them any new customers. I'd guess that they are out of business within the next year. After we got home, we had to burn all of our clothes because of their poor ventilation. Just kidding, but it was really bad... so plan ahead if you are going anywhere after eating here (despite this review advising you otherwise). It was a friday night and our little group was going to go to 8oz burger for dinner. Unfortunately the wait was 45 minutes so we decided to go elsewhere. The wait was the same at Poquitos. Then we spotted Sam's a little way up Pike and decided to give it a try. I had bought a Groupon for Sam's so I was happy to go there. Sadly the experience was rather awful. One of the worst aspects of Sam's is the ordering. As others on Yelp have mentioned , you have to order at the bar. But there is no sign explaining this at Sam's, and they don't tell you when you enter. It took us a while of sitting around getting annoyed before we asked about ordering and were told to do it at the bar. Sams Tavern, please figure this out; it's a horrible experience for your customers to have to wait at the bar, hoping to get the bartender's eye to order. I didn't even bother trying to use my Groupon because the bartender was so flustered about taking orders that I knew pulling out a voucher would have just increased the time before we got our food. I ordered the gourmet burger which came with "endless fries". The fries were ok, but the burger tasted... weird. As if something had gone slightly off. I should have sent it back, but I finished it anyway. And I know it wasn't just me, because the girl sitting next to me at the share-table sent her burger (the same type I ordered) back. The beers at Sam's weren't particularly cheap either. $4 for a PBR? Come on! Overall a pretty disappointing experience; we should have just waited for 8oz burger. read more

This place is offensive!!! A one eyed ex-employee nearly assaulted me. And service was worse than bad. I was sitting down for 38 minutes until I asked for service and got a beer right away. However, I to get Nina's attention, I asked the guy at the bar next to me what her name was. He obliged, but said "don't ever offend an asian Bartender". I was taken aback, but since he was clearly in his late 50's and a bearded white guy, I didn't make a fuss. I enjoyed my beer and the next provided by the goth looking bartender. Just before halftime Nina took my empty glass and never offered me another. All i wanted was my last beer of the night before half time so I could safely drive later. I waited for the ask another 20 minutes when I said to the pirate guy, "is it all asians or just her that you shouldn't offend". This was extremely offensive to the pirate, and he threatened to bodily remove me and when I said he brought it up, he said he would beat me up. He went on an on as I looked for my pencil that I was trying to draw with. All I wanted was a beer, I am 3 feet away from the tap. I am being threatened and told off by this pirate. But no beer, no eye contact, no communication, no, I will be with you in a minute. I wrote a note saying "please give me my tab, I am not wanted here." Another 15 minutes goes by and when it is slowed down, completely, then nina asks for my status. I show her my note and she refuses to charge me because I felt the way I did. She was oblivious to the whole thing. I picked up my things and left. I am sure Pirate told her how raciest and offensive I was, when I was just in the situation. I admit it was raciest, but I didn't believe it and thought he was offensive with his original comment. In Nina's defense, she had just started a new POS system and it was really busy during the game. My only problem is her priorities, she served people several times coming to the bar, before she even checked on her bar patrons. In conclusion, I am sure it is a fine place, and when the management changes the POS they should schedule twice the employees. This did not happen causing this clear lapse in service. The mac and cheese was pretty amazing! Everything else though... I ordered a veggie burger that came out lukewarm and seemed like it was just tossed in the microwave rather than grilled. The cheese was placed on separately, so it wasn't melted, and the bun wasn't even attempted to be warmed up. Overall it was a very cold burger. Toasted buns please!! The burger was kind of a default obligatory, i guess we better have something for the vegetarians, vs something that was really a menu item that you'd want to order The server was also the bartender and the greeter and the busser and the everything else since her and the one cook were the only people working. She was very nice, but I felt bad watching her scramble about trying to get everything done and I'm sure it didn't help with the food coldness level. I am not sure if it was an off night, but the soundtrack while I was there was firmly stuck in 1999. I was worried after reading the mixed reviews here. The service definitely turned out to be disappointing. We waited an hour and 20 minutes to get our food from the time we were ready to order and when it arrived. The tavern was only 1/4 full when we got there on a week night, and only 1/2 full after an hour waiting for our food. It also took 20 minutes to get the first beers. They said they only had one guy in the kitchen, and there were only two people working the tables. But given all the other reviews about slow service, it seems this isn't a one time thing - are the owners intentionally understaffing it? The smoked pulled pork was pretty good. It's too bad they served it on a giant bun (not mentioned in the menu listing) that overwhelmed the meat, but I just ditched that. The bacon chili is excellent - much more spicy than your average restaurant chili. The burgers are okay but again the giant bun overwhelms the thin patty - I'd prefer a burger from 8oz Burger or Blue Moon. The fries are nothing to write home about, and I understand why they offer them as "bottomless fries" - because no one really wants seconds. The beer selection is pretty good. I think I'll come back, but I hope they don't continue running the restaurant with only three people. read more

Great atmosphere and location. I have had numerous great experiences at Sam's Tavern, however, last night I was treated terribly. At the bar I purchased 4 PBRs and 4 shots of Fireball, after waiting 10 minutes for a receipt and card I asked the bartender for it. She then told me that she had given it to me, which was a lie. She was very rude and confrontational about giving me the bill, which was $44.99. I did not feel the service warranted a tip so I rounded to the nearest dollar of $45.00. She then looked at the receipt, told everyone around that I was a "cheap piece of sh*t and only tipped $0.01." As if this wasn't embarrassing enough, not to mention unprofessional and immature, she got a penny from the cash register and literally threw it at my face. I called the manager today to explain what happened and how disrespected I was last night, but none were on duty. I emailed the company to express my dissatisfaction and concerns. Like I said above, I frequent this tavern and will not be returning until this matter is resolved or at LEAST addressed in some manner. read more

Stopped in here to grab a drink and assess the rest of the Friday night plan. There was a spot at the bar and the bartender & servers were really friendly and attentive. There are surprisingly few beers: 3 taps and 2 varieties of cans. It must be more of an eating place than a drinking place. That said, it was a lively atmosphere, and the fact that it isn't huge and has big windows facing Pike Street makes it an interesting place to be for a little while on a weekend evening. For a burgers and fries place, Sam's has pretty pathetic burgers and fries. The burger I ordered was cold, sopping with foul smelling grease, and came accompanied by even colder and greasier fries. The fries had been sitting so long they had fused into a blob. The process of ordering at the bar, finding an open table, and waiting for the table to be bussed and cleaned was also a bit off putting. The only redeeming part of Sam's was that they didn't make me pay for the inedible food. I hope this place figures out that Quinn', 8 Oz, Dick's, Linda's, and a dozen other places on Capitol Hill put thought into their burgers sooner than later. read more

The service here is really dependent on the person .. our first visit which got me hooked was amazing! Sweetest bartender ever, always checked on us, offered fries even the kitchen guy was pretty nice .. so since I had a good experience here my first time (they were serving traveler's grapefruit beer on tap .. that was yum) .. I have since tried to bring friends back now almost five times and each time has been the same piece of sh*t bartender (short black hair girl).. so unfortunate :( this place actually has pretty good food but with her snarky remarks I really do not want to return. The happy hour menu mentions that it's open until 2AM, but this is REALLY depending on how busy the bar is .. which is fair. However when I sit down at 11:15P and the kitchen is still open, but you never stopped by to greet me or anything so I finally walk up at 11:45P and you tell me the kitchen is closed is not very nice. She said the bar wasn't busy enough, however every seat in the restaurant was taken, which is the busiest i've ever seen .. considering my first time it was later and there were only 2 other tables. When I told her I didn't know we had to order at the bar she told me this is capitol hill it's self service.. wtf. I was excited to try another burger place in Capitol Hill but this is not what we need. Food was not so fantastic, with a focus on the fries being a major let down (seriously, how hard is it to not make them soggy and floppy?). The decore has been ripped off from all the other places in the neighborhood. A little bit of Linda's, add a splash of Lil' Woody's, and a shout out to the Unicorn. AND THE BEER! $4 Bud Lights?? All other beers are $5. Seriously? The only happy hour deal they said was two tall boys for $7. Thanks, but no thanks. Sam's can go back to Bellevue where it and that pricing belong. Capitol Hill doesn't need this. We have good burgers (Lil Woody's, Blue Moon, 8 oz., etc) and we have the bar thing taken care of. I bookmarked Sam's Tavern for their Bloody Mary's with hamburgers on them which seems to be what the place is best known for but Steve and I just left a new brewery in Capitol Hill and so drinking more alcohol would have came back and we would have paid for it dearly. Especially in the case of mixing alcohol so when we reached here the foremost thing on our minds was just to get something to eat. The place was extremely busy and we were lucky to get a seat without having to wait. If we had to wait it probably would have been hours after the Seahawks game that everyone was glued to on the tv because nobody was budging. So after getting sat down we looked around the atmosphere and started enjoying it. To eat Steve got a nice, big burger which was good! I got their Taco Salad which was very good! In fact I enjoyed my dining selection a bit more. I have no complaints about the service or anything really. It was a fun, quirky place...something I enjoy going to when visiting Capitol Hill. read more

Greasy burgers .... I mean hella greasy burger. Overall I think the burger was tasty. Not the best or most amazing burger, but a good solid stick to your rib, get your ass to the gym and burn the calories off that you just ate burger. I will say after a volleyball game it was tasty. I couldn't wait to get home and review this place. It took mediocrity to a level so high that it somehow jumped over into the category of "Laughably Awful Eating Experiences." As soon as I walked in I was assaulted by the dulcet tones of cliched music from 1996. No joke, we played the guessing game of what's coming up next and nailed it three times with Sublime, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Red Hot Chile Peppers. Don't get me wrong, just a few weeks ago I was on my fifth sake cocktail at Rock Box and queuing up Goo Goo Dolls for shits and giggles but this reeked of someone so out of touch that they think this stuff is ironic, musical catnip for hipsters or something. ( I also burst out laughing when the few patrons were fine with Haddaway's "What is Love" and Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" only to yell at the bartender to skip some N' Sync or 90 Degrees song. Really? You guys just sat through 45 minutes of someone's 90s Now That's What I Call Music collection and a boy band is unacceptable to you?) Enough with that and on to the food. It was terrible. Just ridiculously inedible and let me tell you, I am willing to eat a lot of awful junk. We split a wedge salad, chicken tenders basket, and nachos and those three things made up most of their menu. It's very small (at least this applies to the lunch menu). The wedge salad was completely boring with a small sprinkle of bacon and tomatoes that had clearly been sitting around for a while. I ate two bites. The chicken tenders were fine but they were not notable in any way and the accompanying fries were limp. The nachos made me laugh out loud. We got a smallish basket of cold, stale chips with a couple blobs of gritty, dried out, unmelted cheese. There was a spoonful of weird chili on top that was gone in a couple of bites and, no exaggeration, a single tablespoon of browning guacamole in a little plastic cup that is usually used to give you a sample of something at a grocery store. No salsa or anything else to help deal with the mound of dry, unadorned chips we were faced with. We abandoned ship 1/3 of the way into our food and booked it. Never again. read more

Continually ignored at the bar. Busy night, watched the bartender stand back...intentionally serve none of her customers, and sip on a drink as she casually smirked at the situation. It was a slap in the face to everybody who'd been waiting (over ten minutes at the bar). One of the rudest things I've ever seen in the service industry. First and last time - never again.
