Tenders and fries
Sonya M.

I stopped in one afternoon with my sister and a friend while visiting Seattle. The menu looked decent, and the space seemed low-key, so we decided to give it a try. We were greeted immediately upon entry by a young lady who also ended up being our waitress. I didn't catch her name, but she was petite with long, light brown hair. She was very pleasant and attentive. Once we found her that we were visiting the area she suggested some other restaurants in the area. The space is comfortable and welcoming. The bathroom was also clean. I couldn't find the hand soap at first and laughed when I finally saw it with the sticker on it. (see photo) My sister and I both had chicken tenders and fries. Our friend had a burger. The food was very tasty. We all enjoyed our food immensely and had no complaints. My sister also had one of the cocktails, but I can't recall what it was called. The bill was about $80, which was slightly expensive for a dive bar, but probably on par for Seattle. If I ever visit the area again, I'd return to Sam's for sure.

A classic spot in Cap Hill for bar food, brews, and trivia -- it's an eclectic little spot with one of my favorite trivia hosts! My friends and I usually stop by on Tuesdays at 7 to play. The interior decor is funky (lots of moose-themed decor and dollar bills) and the bartenders are all very sweet and helpful. The food here is all the classic bar foods, and I've always liked it! Highly recommend the nachos, grilled cheese, and sweet potato fries. They're always kind enough to leave the chili off to the side to make the nachos vegetarian. Trivia here is also one of my favorites in the area! The announcer is so sweet and the questions are just challenging enough. My favorite way to spend a Tuesday night with pals.

Epic Bloody Mary

Relaxed, casual, and quirky place to grab food and drinks. Open long hours. Love to see the dogs drop in with their owners. People are really friendly. Bloody Mary is the best, it's really a meal in itself with all the stuff and a slider (which is simple but delicious, almost as good as thru regular burgers). Maybe a smidge heavy on the garlic for me but yummy anyway. The burgers and sandwiches are really good, bar food but there's some little magic they mix in and it's really delicious. Prices are decent too. All around love it.

We went to Sam's yesterday to watch some football and grab some food and drinks! Giving this place 4 stars because of the fact that it was a game day and there was only one guy working who was awesome. He was serving people, making drinks, bringing food out, cleaning tables and he was still super attentive with us and kept checking in on us! We ordered clucks and fries and chicken wings to share. The wings and fries were tasty! The wings were perfectly crispy which I love. The clucks (chicken tenders) were just okay. Pretty flimsy strips of chicken that weren't crispy. I'd give 3 stars for the food. Overall, we had a great time at Sam's watching the game!Love the little Christmas decorations they have up and all of the dollar bills throughout the place. Great ambiance here to grab a drink, watch a game, or socialize with some friends!!

Soooo Sam's ended up being our last bar stop in Seattle and also my favorite. I loved it because they're not taking themselves too seriously in a part of the city that is trying so hard to be cool that it fails miserably. Capitol Hill was so ironically pretentious it's laughable. Ugly and dirty, Capitol Hill was my least favorite part of my least favorite city on our summer west coast tour. I will give credit to the awesome spots, though, like Sam's Tavern. Chill, fun, great bartender, great service. It's definitely a place I will return to if I ever make it back to Seattle. Had a couple of pre dinner cocktails. The Jack Daniels and cokes were nice and strong. There are lots of locals here. One of the friendliest places we visited. I would have gone back if we had more time.

Soup of the Day!!

Our second stop while in the Capital Hill area, bar hopping. This area is so fun and there are so many restaurants, bars, etc. all within walking distance of one another. We found ourselves in front of Sam's Tavern and asked the security guy what the vibe was like. He said it was chill, and after the Unicorn's zaniness, we needed chill. We went in for a drink. The "Soup of the Day" sign got our attention (it was Red Bull & Vodka that day) and we ordered those. Our bartender, Bryan, was friendly and quick. We sat at a long table/bar, that invites conversations and soon met some others at a nearby table and made quick friends with them. We had a lot of fun here and the place got busier as it got later, so we got here about the right time (9:30 PM-ish). A fun thing to do here is to decorate a dollar bill and post it in the bar wherever you can. We found this place has at least 3 locations, each with a different feel according to one of our new friends. Give this place a try when in the area.

Entrance of Sam's Tavern. Check out their daily specials, we got the Burger & Beer special and it was a dang good burger.

Great little dive, with good weekly specials. We were lucky enough to catch the burger and beer special and the burger was delicious. Also, they keep sports on the TVs so that was a good perk. We ended up popping in here twice.

Came here New Year's Day for dinner and there was only 2 people working the entire area. Despite that, our server did a great job informing us their situation soon after we walked in so we were prepared for possibly a longer wait between service. The two men did the best they could and food came out pretty fast for the situation. Chicken strips were super crispy and juicy warm inside (very solid job well done). Lacked a little seasoning but wasn't a big deal if people like dipping sauces. Fries were good and crispy. Burger was average, nothing crazy. Could also use a little bit more seasoning.

Ordered takeout from Sams tavern during the pandemic. They have a nice outdoor patio with tents and heaters.. the outdoor patio was packed with people all in their own groups.. We ordered the teriyaki chicken burger and the Jalapeno Reno and both the burgers were really good.. the sauce in the jalapeno reno is definately worth a mention (i wish they had pit some extra though).. for the sides definitely try their sweet potato waffle fries which are so good and their tater tots are okay.. they have a huge bar (ofcourse it is a tavern afterall) but i did not get a chance to taste their drinks during my covid visit.. They do have a buy one get one burger offer on facebook so avail that offer if you like by commenting on their post.. all in all a good burger place to hangout with friends in SLU..

I mean, theoretically, what's there to not like? I need fries and a burger and it's 11pm? Oh look,…read moreFat Shack's open! AND they have deep fried Oreos??? Sign me up. The restaurant itself leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm not asking too much. I believe the owner said he was trying to revamp the place. I hope that the area comes alive in the future years, that should help. Here's the issue though, this is the slowest spot ever. I've waited 30 minutes for fries - FRIES. I don't mind waiting for food, but it should remain reasonable. There were only two or three people working, and one man did tell us this, but I need to be honest - this was on Super Bowl Sunday. No one was able to get anyone a beer from the tap for 40 minutes, the food took forever and it appeared that online orders were being prioritized (which makes sense, you make as you get orders coming in, but that puts your in person customers in an odd and sometimes frustrating position). To be honest, I probably wouldn't have minded as much if I just had some fries to snack on. I didn't mind as much this one time because I was just happy to find a place to watch the Super Bowl Half Time show, but other days, it's a little hard to look past. I wish this business the best, I live too close to not hope for its improvement! Looking forward to updating my review. At the end of the day, if you're hungry, it's late, this is your spot.

He said, "No, you got the sandwich." I said, "Okay... so did you make the sandwich I ordered or not?" He said yes. I open it up and it's literally two chicken fingers, fries, and honey mustard. No Philly cheesesteak. So I asked, "If you didn't have Philly cheesesteak, why didn't you tell me that when I ordered it?" He said, "I don't know, I can put it on the side if you'd like." I said, "I thought you didn't have any Philly cheesesteak?" He walked away, came back with a side of Philly cheesesteak, and told me to put it on the sandwich myself. For $19, I shouldn't have to assemble my own sandwich -- especially after being told you didn't even have the main ingredient. Just be upfront with customers.

All the…read moreoutdoor tables were full when we arrived at 6, so we put our name on the list for inside and waited about 30 minutes. The oysters were the main draw for me, and they were totally worth the visit. Old Stove serves them with a savory watermelon sauce in addition to a traditional cocktail sauce--eaten together, it's a flavor explosion that I can't quite describe. We also enjoyed the garlic everything fries, which were delicious! We just had to try a flight to sample the brews. There are some really good beers available here, especially the Belgian blonde, citra pale ale, and the stout. I did not really care for the seasonal sour (grapefruit, I think)--to me, it just tasted like a sour and nothing more, but someone with more interest in sour beers would probably enjoy it just fine. Despite the busy night, our server checked on us regularly and was very personable, stopping to chat with us about the local sports scene. There's plenty to look at, inside and out. If you can snag a seat outside, you'll get to enjoy the waterfront. Inside, the decor is industrial but fun. Not sure if this runs all the time, but when we were there, the tvs were playing vintage beer ads, which was quite fun. They also sell some pretty good t-shirt designs. Overall, Old Stove Brewing is the perfect combo of good location, good food, and good beer. Definitely recommend a visit when in the Pike Place area!

They gave us these post cards to write down our individual drinks. FYI - this place requires using your smart phone to scan a QR code for the menu. We ordered 2 apps (salmon dip with pita chips & chips and cheese dip) I ordered fish and chips. Buddy got the meat loaf. Our beer showed up quick. Waiter always checked on us often. Our apps showed up and they were both delicious. Then 5 minutes later our main dish orders showed up. Wasn't too happy with that because we wasted time to taste our beers and snack on the apps. They need to work on their timing. Need at least 10 minutes in between the beer and apps. The food overall is admittedly top notch. Fish and chips FRESH! The fish was juicy and the fried crust was perfection. Pieces were large. They will ask if you want 3 or 4. 3 is enough. If they can work on timing the drinks and food this place would be a 5 out 5, but will deduct a star because of that. The overall vibe of the place was nice. Huge layout with wooden picnic style tables. Outdoor tables if you're lucky to get one. Large tanks to brew beer surrounding the room and a merch table.

I didn't expect much out of these, but they were surprisingly good. The rice is cooked perfectly, sticky and tender, yet each grain is distinctive and almost bouncy, giving great mouthfeel. The musubi seems to be dipped in a small amount of soy sauce, although not enough to cover the entire rice surface. The additional sodium isn't really needed in the first place due to the salty and meaty kick the spam on top gives the handheld snack. It's a classic combination for a good reason! (4/5) For the Food Walk special, they only give a small scoop of mac salad. I'm sure the normal side portion for $5.94 is much larger. The salad is unspectacular but solid. It's a little sweet, a bit peppery, and certainly very creamy. There's a bit of julienned carrot included that isn't particularly crunchy, being soaked in the mayo sauce. The macaroni itself isn't mushy or overcooked, so it still has some texture. (4/5) I don't usually expect much out of food court restaurants, but Aloha Plates definitely surprised me with their quality. It seems like a solid option for Hawaiian.

Perhaps the Lao Burger served there wasn't as juicy and succulent, with perfectly crisp smashed patties as I recalled? Or perhaps Taurus Ox just serves a completely inferior version. I revisited for a Friday late dinner to reach the bottom of things. This was at around 8PM and the place was surprisingly busy, with a fully running kitchen and almost all seats taken. It's a pretty small restaurant to begin with, but since the food comes fast, people don't typically stay too long. By the time our food arrived, a table had cleared up for us. Lao Burger ($18) - This Lao Burger is just as good as my first visit. Absolutely perfectly fried smash patties, completely with lacy, crispy edges that provide texture and an intense caramelized meaty flavor. I've already described the burger in detail in my previous review - what I can say on this visit is that the burger is basically identical, indicating that Ox Burger is consistent with cook and construction. The burger as a whole has the perfect moisture level with plenty of unique funky, umami-full flavors that make each bite a delight. As with my previous review, two things come to mind that detract just a tiny bit from my full enjoyment. Firstly, the burger as a whole is a bit salty for my tastes, necessitating several trips to refill my cup of water Secondly, the piece of sliced pork belly included is kind of vestigial. It seems to be only there to add additional salt, because neither the flavor nor texture are very apparent while eating. (5/5) Deluxe ($15) - This burger is somehow way messier than the Lao to eat. Upon lifting it up, a mess of watery mustard/mayo mix drips onto the plate. I think it might be from the extra moisture in the tomatoes and lettuce. And yet, somehow the bun isn't soggy at all. This burger is otherwise excellent, combing the same picture perfect smash patties as in the Lao, with the classic fixings - American cheese, bacon, pickles, and plenty of veggie mix. (5/5) I'm glad I gave the Lao Burger another chance. It's now one of my favorite burgers in the city. I'll definitely be coming back to Ox Burger for more. The progenitor, Taurus Ox, remains on my not recommended list though! Bathrooms - Single unisex room.

The food was great for all adults involved. Portions of fries are generous and delicious, and come with fancy sauces (none of which appealed to me, but were appreciated by my family). The burgers are really inventive, so we all wanted to try the Lao. It's delicious. I did balk at $18 for just the burger, which is a smash patty (less beef) and I took the cheese, Mayo, and cilantro off. Eighteen dollars! No side, no drink. I might just be living in the past I guess It's really hard to order for kids here, imo. Even my non-picky kid was not about it and the toddler wouldn't try it. Thank goodness for fries, eh?
