I have eaten fish and chips and fried shrimp at Salty Blue quite often. Love it. I also like their small but excellent selection of beers. However today I was in the mood for a delicious, juicy hamburger. Salty Blue turns out to be a great place to go for that. My friend and I both ordered the Deluxe burger. It checked all the boxes for what you want in a great burger. I especially liked that it wasn't overcooked, still a bit pink in the middle. The fries were good too. It's just that I fill up quickly eating them. You could get a salad instead, which is very good, but I forgot. They also have a smash burger. I haven't tried that yet. A friend of mine is showing me around and I was asking about if there were any good fish and chips places. He said he knew of this place Salty Blue Fish and Chips. He's doing the driving as we get over here. This place isn't located in a strip mall like most places I'm used to going to, you know with a big parking lot. This is more of a real city downtown sort of location. There's a small amount of parking at the shop. But the streets have parking sort of. They seem really narrow to me, I dunno, I'm kinda claustrophobic around here, but he's driving so I just roll with it. We go in and looking at the menu we decide on the cod and chips for $17. I saw pis posted of the cod and chips and it looked tasty, so I hope it is. Our orders are ready in a short time. I've had fish and chips in a lot of places. Most seem just to use frozen fillets or those small triangles of fish. But this place like my fave back in Sacramento, use a real filet of a whole fish. The cod is tasty and hot and the batter is crispy how I like. The fries are OK, just fries. We stopped in for lunch at the Salty Blue Fish & Chips. They have a small parking lot or street parking. A nice little place with outdoor seating with umbrellas and indoor table seating. One large table capable of seating 10 people. Otherwise, smaller tables and counter seating. Hayden and Madison were friendly, outgoing, helpful, and made some recommendations for us. As we were visiting, they were really helpful. I like that they offered some other fish like mahi mahi, sea bass, & grouper, as well, as the traditional cod. We ended up going traditional signature cod & chips. Chowder: creamy soup, cod, potato, dill, thyme, spices, & oyster crackers. The soup was not as thick as you would expect, but it was very flavorful and tasty. So, don't expect a thick chowder. Cod Fish & Chips: battered or grilled served with chips or spring salad. I've only been here once, but it made an impression! Came here on one of our recent hot June days. I knew I wanted to eat somewhere outside before wandering around Renton. I remembered Salty Blue was on my list and they had a front patio, so that was THE CHOICE! We found a small table for two right outside their window, just in the shade- perfect for me and my husband. I ordered the cod (battered) fish and chips, I wanted to go simple my first time. When it arrived at the table, it was a huge piece of fish sitting atop plenty of fries! The crispy batter stayed on the fish as I ate- a big plus. I enjoyed it with malt vinegar and an incredible sauce full of dill, and I LOVE dill. The fries were good but slightly soggy, maybe from the fish sitting on top, perhaps I'll immediately push them to the side next time. My husband got the grilled Mahi Mahi with chips. It looked beautiful and he said it tasted wonderful, even without any sauce or condiments. The servers came outside to check on us a couple times, which was much appreciated! We had our meals with a cold pint of beer each and just loved having delicious food while relaxing in the warm air on a sunny day. One of my favorite things about the food is that you can choose to have your fish & chips either grilled or battered and either with fries or salad. First thing I noticed was the CRISP on the batter. I had to try a little ASMR moment and that crisp and crunch sounded perfect! The fish itself was 10/10 Delicious! Perfectly meaty, salty and crispy. I had seen this place recommended online and I was intrigued because they had the giant pieces of fish, just like Proper Fish on Bainbridge Island which I love. We came around noon on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy but there were still a decent number of people flowing in. You order at the counter and then they bring you your food when its ready. I got the cod and chips, with sweet potato fries instead of regular (for $2 more). The fish was gigantic and well fried, though I think it was a bit underseasoned. When we arrived at 5:30pm on a Friday, most of the tables were taken. Ordering is done at the front counter. The chowder is full of fish, celery, dill and potatoes. The soup consistency is more milky than thick creamy. Overall a decent soup. The cod was moist and flaky with large pieces of fish flesh. The seabass is a bit more dense but still cooked well. Well, they did it again folks! This spot never misses!! My father in-law was in town for a short stay and had been telling him about this place for months, so naturally we had to get Salty Blue for dinner. Now, they close at 7 but was able to call in an order at 6:30 and pick it up just before close. When I called, they said they are happy to accommodate late orders (as his flight was delayed) but the kitchen appreciates a minimum of 30 mins before closing to ensure the best possible quality and be able to close the kitchen in a timely manner. Absolutely understandable and respected. They know what they are doing. As always going in to pick up my order was a pleasure as everyone is always happy, relaxed and happy to help you have your best experience. Everything is so neat and tidy!! We got 4 orders of Cod and Chips, a salad, and and extra cod piece plus an order of shrimp tacos... and when I tell you everything was still crisp and piping hot after making the 20min drive back home, it absolutely blew my mind! Was honestly leaning toward a full 5 stars after this visit, but since I've only eaten here once so far I'll hold that final judgment until I make it back again which I absolutely will soon. Easily one of the better fish sandwiches I've had around Seattle recently. The chowder was the only thing that held me back slightly. For my personal taste it was a bit more watery than I typically prefer, as I usually lean toward a thicker richer chowder. That said, the flavor itself was excellent and honestly overcame most of that initial thought after a few bites. What truly stood out though was the service. Absolutely fantastic people here. Genuine, attentive, welcoming, and the kind of staff that makes a place memorable beyond just the food. I almost didn't get the basket due to everything being fried, but they did make an exception to swap 1 item for grilled. If we didn't get the basket we were going to spend a lot less so by allowing people to swap one of those items for grilled is a good selling point IMO & you can swap with The Catch, but I wanted the potato cakes from The Basket. He informed me the chowder wasn't as thick as most places and I actually loved the soupy consistency. It was flavorful without being too filling before your meal! Chowder was delicious! Everything from the basket was so good. The grilled fish was tasty & well seasoned. The breaded fish does not leave that greasy taste in your mouth like other places, It's one of the best I've had. Wow. This is some great food here. We were looking for a good little fish and chips place on our way through the town and stumbled onto this one. The food is outstanding. Super crispy, nicely battered, and huge portions. We tried a little of everything. The battered cod was massive, the "basket" that has the variety of prawns and calamari and fish was huge and a great spread of food items. Our kids split that. They liked the calamari as well. The grilled sea bass on salad was super fresh and perfectly cooked. I ended up with shrimp tacos and again, super fresh and good portions. Each taco had two large shrimp/prawns in them. All super delicious. It is a lot of fried food depending on what you get so keep that in mind but well worth it. Lastly, we tried the pineapple fritters for dessert and wasn't sure what to even expect. Basically, they're fresh and sweet delicious. Hard to describe them except they are very good. Sounds odd to have fruit battered but it just works. Overall, we loved this place and if we are back around we will stop here.
