    Cod and Sweet Potato Chips
    Katherine G.

I had seen this place recommended online and I was intrigued because they had the giant pieces of fish, just like Proper Fish on Bainbridge Island which I love. We came around noon on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy but there were still a decent number of people flowing in. You order at the counter and then they bring you your food when its ready. I got the cod and chips, with sweet potato fries instead of regular (for $2 more). The fish was gigantic and well fried, though I think it was a bit underseasoned. The tarter sauce was good but a little on the lemon-ey side for me. I did really enjoy the sweet potato fries - crispy and fluffy. It's a big plate of food for a pretty reasonable price. I did enjoy it, but it didn't leave a really lasting impression so I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Small dine in restaurant with a big bang for fish and chips, I'd say the best fish n chips I had in the area! We ordered the basket that came with 2 fish, 2 shrimp, 4 calamari, potato cakes, and fries and slaw! It was great for sharing for 2 people that wanted to try a variety of items. My faaav was the fish and the shrimp. Fish were really big pieces. Their slaw was very refreshing and packed with a slight zest! We did try the chowder, wasn't really hitting for me, it was on a soupier side very liquidy no thickness to it (missing the thickener/roux, flavor was there but would have preferred it to be thickened. All in all, it was a great experience for my first time here. Def would try again!

Yummy fish and chips. The breading was delicious and hot. The burgers looked excellent. The portion generous and price was good. A hard kombucha and I would have been over the moon. Maybe they will get some! Definitely a do again!

Great customer service! It's a small eat in or take out restaurant in the heart of downtown. Has plenty of parking. Fish or shrimp with chips... tacos or burgers!! What are you in the mood for. Quick service! We enjoyed our meal. Locally owned .. supporting small businesses

Been coming here since the pandemic and their fish is always fresh and juicy. I've had their cod and the fish tacos in the past, this time I opted for their Deluxe Burger and YUMMM! I ordered for pick up and my order was ready when I arrived so it was a quick in and out, as I got ready to eat I open my box and this monster of a burger is there with fresh cut chips, I mean... what can I say, the burger was seasoned, the beef bacon was thick, and you can never go wrong with fresh cut chips so for me, this place hasn't missed. Support a locally owned fish & chips spot and enjoy a delicious meal, they are worth it!

We were starving from traveling and indecisive so we just ordered the basket and a separate cup of chowder to satisfy all cravings! Staff was friendly, happily answered questions. I almost didn't get the basket due to everything being fried, but they did make an exception to swap 1 item for grilled. If we didn't get the basket we were going to spend a lot less so by allowing people to swap one of those items for grilled is a good selling point IMO & you can swap with The Catch, but I wanted the potato cakes from The Basket. He informed me the chowder wasn't as thick as most places and I actually loved the soupy consistency. It was flavorful without being too filling before your meal! Chowder was delicious! Everything from the basket was so good. The grilled fish was tasty & well seasoned. The breaded fish does not leave that greasy taste in your mouth like other places, It's one of the best I've had. The potato cakes were a treat. I loved those so much, and even the slaw was yummy! Our meal came with tartar sauce and another, but the tartar sauce was excellent. Restaurant appeared to be extremely clean, even the bathroom, & the hand soap smelled so good. All the men were hard working, As soon as people got up they were clearing and wiping off tables. Highly recommend this place. Would we pretty sweet to sit outside during good weather.

Salty Blue continues to be my go-to spot for fish & chips in Seattle. Their batter is everything it should be - crisp, airy, and perfectly seasoned (no egg). The fish is consistently flaky, well-cooked, and never dry or overdone. Surprisingly, I also love their burgers and chicken strips! Everything they do is well executed and you won't be disappointed no matter what you get. If you're overwhelmed by the menu (understandable!), go for one of the baskets - they're great for sharing and take the guesswork out of ordering. And whatever you do, don't skip the potato cakes. The ambiance is simple, bright, and fittingly nautical; nothing fancy, just good vibes and even better food. The staff are friendly and great with helping you through the menu. Highly recommend if you're craving classic fish & chips done right.

For nice clean place, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Service quick friendly. Food is fresh and very hot. Tasty and filling for the cod fish and chips we got.

We ordered The Basket; huge serving, perfect to share

The food was amazing! We ordered The Basket and the serving size was huge! Perfect meal to share! Service was prompt; our order was taken right away & the food came out within 10 minutes. Ambiance was a home town feel; there were a lot of patrons but enough space to cater to everyone.

If you are looking for a change of pace, a way to decompress yourself from the chaos of downtown, come here. Renton feels like small town living and the locals were quite friendly. Upon entering we were greeted by a young man behind the counter. He was very friendly and his recommendations were excellent. The restaurant was clean and surprisingly it doesn't smell like fish. The fish tacos were so delicious. It was a great balance of coleslaw and fish. It was slightly sweet and the squeeze of lemon balanced all the flavors. We ordered 2 different types of fish and chips and clam chowder as well. This place seems to be a local favorite. The diversity in customers was really nice to see. Keep up the great work and "Stay Salty"

The lobby was spotless, and the staff was very outgoing and courteous. I had a couple of questions about the menu and they easily answered it for me. The halibut was delicious. I usually get cod, but this time decided to go a little more upscale. It was well worth it. Perfectly breaded and fried it was tender and delicious. The white clam chowder wasn't too thick like I'm used to and it had nice big chunks of clams. Definitely worth it. Overall, a great experience and meal. Look forward to coming back.

When I heard that there was an Ivar's close to our hotel in Renton, WA, I almost thought it'd be Ivar's Renton Landing, which probably would have been appropriate given that it was near The Landing in Renton. But no, this was no fancy restaurant; it was simply a seafood bar. That's not to say it's inferior to the fancy restaurant as I don't think the two can be compared. It'd be kind of like comparing Pappadeaux Seafood Restaurant to Sea Island Shrimp House, IYKYK, but I digress. Ivar's Seafood Bar in Renton is located within Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, which is within walking distance of The Landing. I was walking with a groupmate after spending the day* out and about, and even though we were planning to eat dinner at Ivar's, we actually walked inside Kidd Valley first and almost thought Ivar's was farther away. I mean, it was, but only a few steps farther away lol. When we stepped in, there was a cashier who was ready to take our order, but considering it was our first time at Ivar's, at least the Seafood Bar, we needed time to decide what to get. We both had the same idea of ordering an Ivar's Famous Chowder and a Fish & Chips, although we both would have preferred grilled over fried fish. Of course, the chowder includes the clam, but I didn't know that they had Wild Alaska Salmon Chowder as well! Oh?! Sign me up for that please! Their chowders come in four different sizes: Cup, Bowl, Tanker (4 servings), and Bread Bowl. On average, the Wild Alaska Salmon is a couple dollars more than the clam chowder, but I was more than willing to try the Wild Alaska Salmon this time around. I've had my fair share of clam chowder, but don't recall the last time I ever had a salmon chowder, so I went with that, choosing Bowl as my size of choice. The salmon chowder came with not one, but two packets of Zesta saltine crackers, which I put to good use. For the Fish & Chips, they also had Wild Alaska Salmon as an option, which surprised me because I had never seen salmon as an option for Fish when it comes to Fish & Chips. However, when in Rome, or in this case, Renton lol; I had to keep the Wild Alaska Salmon theme going. Different choices of fish come in different numbers of pieces; the Wild Alaska Salmon comes in 4 pieces, which was more than the Panko Crusted Cod and the Wild Pacific Halibut. I also ordered a large fountain drink, which was 25% more than a regular fountain drink. Unfortunately, I didn't see an option for a zero sugar drink, so I settled for a Diet Dr. Pepper. Even for a seafood bar, the pricing isn't cheap. For the salmon chowder bowl, salmon & fries, and the fountain drink, I spent around $30 for all this, though that did include an overcharge. Keep on reading. Was it worth the ~$30? Yes, but not totally I would say. While I liked the overall taste of both the salmon chowder as well as the salmon & chips, I thought there could have been more flavor in both. I didn't think the Wild Alaska Salmon Chowder was that much of an upgrade compared to Clam Chowder, but if you haven't had it before, it's worth trying once. Also, the batter of the fried salmon was overpowering in taste compared to the salmon itself. I'm glad salmon was an option for the fish, but I don't think I would have been missing out on too much had I chosen the Panko Crusted Cod or the Wild Pacific Halibut instead, especially since you can get as much tartar and/or cocktail sauce as you want. The chips of the Fish & Chips weren't nearly as crispy as I would have preferred. Did I mention the tartar and cocktail sauces? They have five sauce dispensers on the counter across from the register where you can fill up on these sauces for your fish & chips or whatever other entree you choose; three of these dispensers are for tartar albeit one sweet. If you order to go, they have to-go sauces available at the front counter. There are also a couple bottles of vinegar sauces that you can squirt into the cups if you'd like to try those instead. Now, I would have given 4 stars for this Seafood Bar, but I didn't realize until after I returned to my hotel that I got charged for both a regular and a large drink! I did say regular at first, which was my bad, but I was only given the large. I just didn't think that I'd get charged for both, especially since the cashier only handed me one cup. Because of this overcharge, I'm docking an additional star here. Overall, Ivar's Seafood Bar is worth trying if you're looking for a no-frills seafood meal. However, check your receipt before leaving and don't get overcharged like I did! * My visit was back in November when I was taking a hiatus from posting reviews, hence why I posted this review rather late. And Bonnie, when you reply to this review, there's no need to try to rectify this shortcoming as it wouldn't make sense to do so being from out of state.

I'll be honest--the service felt a bit odd when we first walked in. We were told we could wait a while to get seated at the dinning area or that we could seat ourselves at the bar. Since it was our first time, I wasn't sure if that meant the actual bar counter or tables in the bar area. When I asked for clarification, there was a bit of an awkward pause before someone finally explained we could sit at a table in the bar section. That said, once we got settled, the experience improved. The server who took care of us was very kind and attentive. I ordered my usual go-to at breakfast spots: chicken fried steak with a biscuit. It was really good--definitely hearty and comforting without being overly greasy. That said, it is a heavy meal (fried food plus gravy), so be prepared for a post-brunch nap. The biscuit looked a little underwhelming at first, but it actually tasted great. The overall vibe of the place is very much a local dive bar feel, and the service style matches that. As long as you go in with the right expectations, it makes for an enjoyable, laid-back brunch. Also worth noting--there's a decent amount of parking in the back, which is always a plus. Overall, a solid spot for a casual, no-frills brunch.
