Discovered this place when our Valentine's Day dinner selection turned out to be take-out-only, excepting weekends. So we stumbled upon Saltoro, no reservation needed, then waited just a few minutes to be seated at a nice little table for two. But the Maitre D who seated us came by a minute later: "I can seat you at a booth, I just need to wipe it down." Wow. That was appreciated! Food was very good. Steak for me, pasta for her -- both good quality. But it was Mandy the Server that inspires this review. She was Old School professional! So -- between the Maitre D and Mandy -- this recommendation boils down to long-term, high-caring employees: the best mark of a quality owner-somewhere-nearby business of any sort. Restaurant had the food ready at 6:10, we called at 6:12 to check for pick up time and were told they were too busy to update on when to pick up. Once at the restaurant 35 minutes later, they told us they were too busy to push the button on the Yelp/Grubhub app to update the order was ready for pickup. Our food was sitting on the counter for over 35 minutes. The food was soggy and barely warm. They also forgot the salad dressing for upcharged Caesar salad. This is very disappointing for a neighborhood restaurant with previously good following. I'm sure our food would have failed a food safety test, being it sat in a workspace and not kept warm for over 45 minutes. read more

I've been going to Saltoro for a few years, and they've done a great job of adjusting their service throughout the COVID crisis. Last night was a testament to how stress-free and lovely dining out can be right now. They have put up extra outdoor seating to accommodate the new regulations, and the distancing is great. But what I like the most is that their attitudes towards service haven't wavered. They're still friendly, accommodating and attentive. Unfortunately that hasn't been my experience at other Seattle restaurants, where service can seem a bit anxious and impersonal. Tonight I ordered the Sea Salt Half Chicken, and it was amazing. I'm just mad I never ordered it before! It was crispy, juicy and perfectly seasoned. Along with a bottle of rosé and a warm beautiful night, it was another great experience. Our server was not paying attention to my friend and I, and we actively saw her giving great service to other tables, but not us. I NEVER tip below 20% but I just did tonight. I worked in restaurants for a decade and I never write bad reviews because I know how tough this industry is, but something needed to be said. TLDR: Savory! Get the Garganelli and Truffle Fries. Spendy. Dim. Dessert. Non-alcoholic drinks. Extremely dimly lit conditions: paparazzi beware! Near impossible to get a good "like worthy" photo without the aid of extra lighting. Parking is a nightmare--cramped and little of it. Menu is a bit small but each dish is very good. This place is savory! Take a look at the non-alcoholic drinks and the dessert menu--you will not be disappointed! Service: varies depending on the traffic of hungries. Servers are pretty attentive. Leftovers are taken and packed by your server. Check presented to table. Baratta Salad: those pea tendrils are a bit tough to chew! I'm a fan of snow pea tips but these ones aren't as palatable. The flavor of the salad was light and the thin melon slices were refreshing. The prosciutto made up the majority of the flavor. Garganelli: hands down my favorite dish here. The salmon is presented in bite sized chunks and is oh so good. I absolutely love capers--they make this dish divine! The dish itself is not overly drenched in sauce and is just the right amount of creamy. Gingerberry: non-alcoholic version is sweet, carbonated and has a nice tang. A very refreshing drink! Try it out! Lamb Burger: savory burger that is spicy! I can't even handle Taco Bell mild sauce so this burger is close to fire for me. So those of you that like a kick to your buns, have at it! Dark Chocolate Pots de Creme: Oh. My. God. This is to die for. It is super rich and creamy so share with someone for less guilt. Comes with a cute little pitcher of vanilla bean cream to pour over the delectable chocolatey goodness. Truffle Fries: get them and feel no regret because the taste washes away the guilt! Very tasty with a nice crunch. Be warned, it is a VERY large plate of fries (4 people can probably enjoy this appetizer comfortably). You can also substitute the fries that come with the burgers for the Truffle Fries for a slight upcharge. read more

I come here at least once a week. I have tried everything on the menu and always try the specials. I am never disappointed. My husband and I always find the service friendly and the food is wonderful and consistently good. We usually get drinks at the bar and chat with folks while we eat and love the chill vibe. Wow - Just Wow. Super slow service, unapologetic servers, no drink refills, no updates on our order. Felt like a burden. Left after an HOUR without receiving our order, while the two tables next to us had 3 courses while we sat there with nothing. And one of these tables was seated AFTER us. While we just sat there - No appetizer, no entree, no drink refills, no acknowledgement, empty water glasses, no updates or apologies for the delay. The servers would address the other 2 nearby tables and not even look at us. Maybe it was us? I can't imagine we did anything wrong. We were in a back corner, so maybe don't seat people there if you are going to ignore them? It was really, really bad. I recommend the following for this restaurant: 1) Hire better quality servers (I know it is a tough job market for this). 2) Give Customer Service training to existing employees. Communicate expectations for service levels. 3) Don't sit people at tables that are hard to service. Close that area down. 4) Work as a team. It felt disjointed, some people brought out food but didn't check on tables, servers at some tables and then at others, different servers at different times seemed to be flip flopping. 5) Pay better to encourage better quality people? The truffle fries really are amazing. Saltoro definitely delivered! I really enjoyed the restaurant atmosphere and the service was stupendous! I was thoroughly impressed by the truffle fries AND the portions! My friend and I had originally wanted the full size order but our server warned us it was a pound of fries and we're like OMG never mind so we opted for the half size and... well we couldn't even finish. They tasted soooooo good. Truffle oil is probably one of the best inventions ever. Come here if you are craving truffle fries because this is top notch stuff. We actually ordered a lot though... we also tried the crab ravioli (probably my least favorite dish), shrimp fettucine (half order), smoked salmon penne pasta (half order), and a $23 bottle of a cabernet-merlot blend. I was a little disappointed in the smoked salmon because it wasn't actually smoked salmon and it had capers!!! UGH, I HATE CAPERS!!! That ruined the dish for me pretty much but I managed to pick them out and ate the pasta and fish. I really liked the shrimp fettucine though!!! Oh also, if you're craving vanilla panna cotta (which I sometimes do), please come to Saltoro!!! The first bite was soooooooo freaking heavenly. The last place I had really good panna cotta was at that Italian restaurant in UVillage but this place definitely takes the cake. I loved the caramel and blackberry sauce because it definitely added a tangy and sweet touch to the vanilla flavor. There was a good selection of drinks and foods. I personally got the Linguine and the Love Bird drink. I was a fan of both. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the pasta was tasty and creamy. The drink was moderately sweet and very much so a wine. As a heads up if you go for a birthday dinner, there is a cake service fee per person. It wasn't very much, but I wasn't aware initially. For me, eating a well-cooked steak is one of the big joys in life, and Saltoro always hits the mark there! The staff is friendly and attentive, even though they are often super busy. We do wish there were more dairy- and gluten-free options; my husband loves their burgers but has to opt for going bun-less. Also, a picky peeve of mine, I feel like for the prices here, they should invest in better silverware -- eating a delicious steak with a cafeteria-grade fork just feels wrong. This place has some potential. The staff was very friendly and it was done well. They make a really weird old fashioned. The bartender told they did and interesting take on the manhattan but not the old fashioned. I couldn't drink it and that's saying a lot. I would never order it again. The decor is nice and warm. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli and it was odd too. It was really sweet, almost like sweet potatoes. I knew asking for salt wouldn't help so I ate it. The mushrooms and sauce helped to take the sweetness down a notch but it's not the savory still I'm used too. The pasta was cooked well. The food was good but we were not offered bread, the portions were tiny and there was no salad or side veggies. We weren't asked if wanted "to start with a salad". Worst Mother's Day meal ever!! Took over 90 minutes to get overpriced food. Waitress was missing in action for 30 minutes. A quick check in, " we're busy, I'm really sorry but the kitchen is backed up. Can I get you some bread while you wait?" Ordered calamari appetizer and it came with 4 little pieces of squid legs and roasted chick peas. When I finally saw the waitress and asked if that really was a normal portion of calamari, she said they base the portion on weight. Sorry, but I don't want to pay for a portion of calamari and get mostly garbanzo beans. There wasn't much of anything on the plate.Finally get our food, 1 1/2 hours after being sat down. My daughter got her $17 chicken Caesar salad with whole romaine lettuce pieces that she had to cut herself. My $27 salmon was completely raw in the middle. Waitress was unaplogetic ( there was one nice lady with dark hair, thank you) and never once tried to make things right during this whole miserable 2 hour experience. This is our go-to special occasion but casual restaurant in North Seattle. The staff are all friendly and the food quality is excellent. Not only that, but if you're in the mood for a great cocktail, they always have an excellent list of special recipes plus they'll make darned near anything if you ask. One warning: Their truffle fries have RUINED us for ordering fries anywhere else. We keep trying truffle fries elsewhere and are always disappointed! Saltoro makes them thin, delightfully firm & slightly crispy, and then well-dusted with parmesan, truffle & salt. So whatever you order, ask them to sub truffle fries for the starch normally included with your entree', or just go big and order a full side! Some of our favorite entree's are the salt roasted chicken, beet salad, Saltoro salad, prawns with linguine, and any of their flatbreads (i.e. pizzas). Saltoro has so much to offer! Not only does it offer great food and customer service, it seems to carry great stories in peoples hearts. Went in around 4:45, which is 15 minutes before opening, I was waiting outside and I have met Some wonderful people waiting as well. One gentlemen told me that its his favorite spot with his gf, and that they visit at least 3 times a month. Another couple who were waiting as well, told me that its their tradition to sit by the mirror located at the corner. Regulars here, seems to have special traditions and stories with their loved ones. Before even entering, I felt a cozy vibe. Ordered the Caesar salad, calamari, house-made fennel sausage pizza, and finally the butternut squash ravioli. All the foods came out at an prompt timing and all very delicious. Calamari was interesting because it had pieces of chick peas. Not complaining, just commenting. (Hehe) Being one of the first to enter the restaurant, I was surprised to see how pack this place got middle of my dinner. This place almost seems under rated by yelpers and its almost like a secret! I am happy I found this gem! I totally recommend everyone to give this restaurant a try, and you might create a special tradition of your own here. On our way out of the restaurant, we made eye contact with our waitress, who passed by us without a word. This has been a trend the few times we've been to Saltoro over the years - the staff has done their job, but are very impersonal. You're basically treated like just another customer to be cycled through the restaurant. Location: Parking can be a nightmare during peak hours. Attended a birthday dinner for family and was excited to see what this place was all about since I've driven so many times and never stopped in. Also looking at the reviews, which there are a good mix of them, I couldn't wait to try the truffle fries!! Walking in, the place is a little dated and dark....a little update remodel would do some good? The seating accommodations were good considering we where a pretty large party but access was limited so if you needed to get up be mindful of where you choose to sit. Menu was good, I had checked it out before we came to have an idea of what to order and looked at reviews etc. As the food came out most was ok, not as great as what I expected and the portions are on the smaller side. Our waitress and servers were sub par, handing dishes to the closest person to them instead of asking or knowing who ordered what.
