The oyster po bao was also delicious, lightly battered oyster with Dijon mustard on a steamed buns. Had to order another one since the first one was eaten in two bites. The kale salad was also good, made with baby kale and also had kalmata olives. Our waiter was on point. Busy day during fondrens first Thursday, but she still managed to give us awesome service. Saltine, we are pretty good friends during the weekdays but on Sunday we are besties. If you have not experienced brunch at Saltine you need to make plans to do so immediately. Their cinnamon rolls are ridiculously amazing. I also enjoy the chicken biscuits. As far as dinner goes I have had pretty fantastic experiences with all the food with the exception of the Lobster Roll. It was covered in mayonnaise or a mayonnaise like substance. I was super disappointed and felt a wee bit betrayed by one of my favorite places. So maybe avoid that one. Otherwise go for it. Also, gravy fries, yes please. read more

Amazing! Wonderful menu and the best service I've experienced in a long time. The manager came by and they went above and beyond and out of their way to make it a perfect experience. Saltine is great. The oysters are fresh and delicious, and they have a tap list to die for. Seriously, they have every like beer ever. The hidden gem here are the appetizers. French fries with debris gravy and melted gruyere, crab and avocado toast, cornbread with oysters, jalapenos, and cheddar are all amazing options and I'm sure there's good stuff I haven't even tried yet. Loved this place. Oysters were so fresh and large size. The smoked tuna dip was creamy and delicious. My husband had the low country boil and the shrimp and sausage were great in it. I had the wood fired snapped and it was excellent. My teenage daughter had the crab cakes and my 6 year old some had the friend shrimp with French fries. Everyone ate and was happy with everything. I can't remember our servers name but he was great and very good with the kids. I called ahead because we were from out of town. They told me I did not need reservations, but put my name down anyway just in case. One thing I didn't know was parking is a little difficult. This is a sad and tragic review to write. Today's trip to Saltine was less than spectacular bordering on bad. The Nashville hot chicken was cold and oddly small served with a few halves of stale and lifeless not Bunny bread. Just four measly food service grade chicken fingers - what happened to the glorious Nashville hot chicken dish of yesteryear. Sigh. The quiche was served cold too... and on a hot to the touch piece of mismatched old dinnerware. Odd. The server was friendly, but by the time the cold quiche on a hot plate made it to the table, my companion had polished off his entree. Odd. Life is hit or miss sometimes. This was a miss. We stopped in Jackson on the way home from Florida to Texas. We ate dinner at Saltine and unfortunately our car was broken into while there. This was no fault of the restaurant and we had parked around the corner in a lot not patrolled after dark. However, the staff was so helpful to aid us. They called law enforcement, waited with us and provided tape & tarp to cover our window until permanent provision could be made. They also recommended a glass shop to have the window fixed. This was an unfortunate and frustrating event, however the Saltine staff eased the difficulty & went above & beyond their duty. The dinner was great, too. The PB&J was insane! Pork Belly with boiled peanuts and a pepper jelly sauce - come on, really? One one the best things I have ever eaten. Their oysters are great and the dip paired with olives pickled onions and pepper gives it a nice balance. Great place! Oh yeah! They have excellent Ramen specials on Monday nights! The previous times I have visited Saltine the service has not been very good (no complaints on food), so I am always biased on going there. Today I was pleasantly surprised. Service was great and the food was wonderful. I started with the roasted cauliflower over hummus and finished with the wood fired oysters topped with bacon and quail eggs. I've been here twice. The first time I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken. Delicious, but a little too hot for me. The second time I ordered the Shrimp and Grits blue plate. Instantly one of the top five meals I've ever had. I licked the plate clean. Get the shrimp and grits, you won't regret it. I went to Saltine on Ramen Night, expecting to get ramen. Ramen night starts at 6. We got there at 6:30 and were seated by 7, and they were already out of ramen. When we tried to order other options on the menu, many of them were unavailable - I think they were out of beef and tuna, and therefore, all of the menu items with those ingredients. Our food took 45 minutes to arrive (and we didn't have a huge party - there were four people) and our server didn't bring any napkins or flatware until we asked for it. I have only been here a handful of times but each time has been good! They have fresh oysters that are wonderful! They have a good cocktail list that anyone could find a favorite on, and the staff is always really friendly. I have to say though one of the main reasons i go here is for the fried Brussels sprouts! Definitely A-OK. Great addition to Fondren--much needed for all of Jackson, actually. I can't say too much about the food, since all we ate were plates and plates of raw oysters. Actually, they had a great selection. I'm not going to go on about raw oysters; you either like them or you don't (the latter will steer you to other parts of the creative menu). If you like them, I will try to educate/bore you. A little pricey, but worth the splurge. Champagne selection could be a bit more extensive. The A-OK rating would be a higher rating, but the service was the set-back. I have lived and dined in NYC, SF and other big cities. Up-selling is part of the process, but there's a way to do it. Saltine is not mutually exclusive--many restaurants in the Jackson/Madison area have a problem with knowing how to up-sell on the sly. On our visits to Saltine, both my husband and I felt like the server wasn't listening to the very few words we said..."no, we are going to finish our drink since the glass is half full" on many occasions. Some diners, like us, aren't dining to get smashed. We are there thoughtfully, for the food, accompanied by glass of wine or beer. Sometimes, it seemed like there was a desire to sling us more booze than talk to us about the oysters. We will definitely be back time and time again, with a plan of how to combat up-selling strategies from some of the servers. UPDATE: Returned again. Since I am pregnant, we are not drinking...there was no alcohol pushing at all during this visit. Due to the aforementioned, I feel queasy all day and all night long. I didn't even think I'd make it through dinner. My husband went to town on the oysters and I tried other food, including the oyster stew, butternut squash and avocado and lobster toast--all were amazing. Oysters on half shell were the best. Top quality. Big, meaty, juicy and VERY flavorful. Perhaps the best gulf oysters I've ever had. Fried oysters were over cooked and shrimp were over cooked. Fried oyster po-boy was served on a bun that looked like it had been sitting around for a while and oysters were way beyond done. Skewer of shrimp on a salad were dried out and overcooked. Fries were ok, but on the soggy side. Go for the oysters. Management replied to my review in a very positive and reassuring manner. What a fabulous happy hour experience we had sitting outside for dollar oysters and half-price off all beverages including the nicest wines. The staff was fabulously friendly and engaging. Everyone of our requests was promptly met. We were made to feel like we were part of the family and they were so glad we were there. And believe me they were plenty busy to not have to do so. I've been to Saltine twice and enjoyed it both times. The location and environment are very cool and make the experience more fun. But I mostly just really like the food. In my last visit I got the Nashville hot chicken, which is something I've really wanted to try for a while now. I can't speak to the authenticity compared to actual hot chicken in Nashville, but I can say that my plate was positively delicious. Shredded pickles over chicken strips on top of white bread with ranch drizzled on top of the whole shebang. I'm a fan of spicy food and this was perfect for me. It wasn't just chicken tenders covered in Tabasco, but it also _was_ spicy. If I got it again I'd probably ask for the ranch to be on the side. So today is definitely my last time eating here.. In my last review...I complimented the oyster stew and left 4 or 5 stars. Today I asked for a cup and the server looked at my friends sitting with me and asked "is that on ya'lls menu?" Then he stated they don't serve it anymore. I apologized for assuming and said I may need another minute to order in which our server replied "you must have been the only person who ever ordered the oyster stew.. No one likes it.." Ok, so thanks. "We don't serve that anymore" would have sufficed. I order the Oysters Lafitte and a cup of gumbo. The gumbo was good, but tasted like beef stew. The oysters (three of us ordered) were hmmm... eaten by all but not exactly enjoyed. The service was so terrible we couldn't help but laugh. We asked if the gumbo/oysters came with French bread.. Server said "no we don't serve bread, but I can probably get ya'll some." But that didn't happen instead we got really stale crackers.. (There were sleeved crackers at the water station behind us, but I couldn't build the courage to go get our own.) We laughed and carried on. Drinks weren't refilled, beers ordered weren't ever delivered, etc. Again so many things were wrong we could only be entertained. I can't imagine if the restaurant had actually been busy what may have happened. High expectations after reviews we saw. We ordered two appetizers, calamari and crab avocado toast. We had to send the fried calamari back because the plate was warm but the calamari was cold. The avocado on the toast had turned on it's color. Nashville hot chicken was lacking in spice. Sweet potatoes were cold and hot not sure how that happens. This place was amazing!!! I had oysters I never heard of from Alabama (Murderpoint?). They were delicious, better than what I can get in the northeast. The avocado toast with crab and grapefruit was next level. The Po Bao was delicious, and I don't think I ever had anything like the PB&J. No wonder the chef is up for a James Beard award.
