The oysters were excellent & the mixed drinks were designed with nautical thought in mind and well-made, each topped with fresh local herbs. Our server was excellent!!! The environment consisted of clean lines, fun nautical inspired murals and colors in this open atmosphere which was decorated with a bar as creatively designed to serve as the master-centerpiece of the room. Amazing little place! We got the laffite wood fire grilled oysters. Wonderful! We also ordered the skillet cornbread. It was a little lacking since it was supposed to have bacon and jalapeños in it. Didn't see or taste either. We shared the low country boil. Well worth the wait. Flavor was amazing! If youare in Jackson and craving fresh seafood and nice atmosphere, give this place a try. Despite never having a craving for oysters, I find myself ordering them for the table especially a la carte. It is great to try the oysters from other regions [besides the Gulf]. They're all a little different and at least worth a try. The cracklins are fresh and crisp. The pretzel is great but I'd be lying if I didn't bestow some of its greatness on the excellent in-house mustard. It's a punch in the face but in a good way... for whatever that means. Nashville Hot anything is great. Be prepared because at times it can make you sweat. The burger isn't my favorite item on the menu, but it is at least satisfactory (you're here for seafood, not burgers). The shrimp po-boy, always a spot of contention for someone from the Coast, is on point. It is arguably the best in the Jackson area. If you can point me to a better one, please do so. Finally, for me, the highlight... the beer. The beer is thoroughly curated list by the owner (who is a well-known craftbeer geek). You have your regulars of course, but they are well-chosen for the limited selection we get in Mississippi, This is the only bar that I know of that runs a Randall (developed by Dogfish Head Brewery) daily or even at all. Basically, a Randall system makes beer infused with other flavors. Grab a glass because there's a new combination every day. Another unique beer feature is the beer engine. This serves low-production beers without additional carbonation and most of the time at room temperature. That last part is very important. Do not go in thinking something from the beer engine should be 38° like your Bud Light. That's not how it works. But, expect a truly unique flavor and try something new. All in all, Saltine is a bright spot in the Jackson restaurant scene. The food is priced fairly and arrives quickly. It is a great place to hang out with friends, try interesting food, and have a great beer. read more

Could be in any big city and hold its own. That said, have been going for a few months now and have noticed a *slight* decline in the front of the house: hosts a little rough around the edges at times, menus on a recent Saturday night were tattered and food-stained, no candle or centerpiece of any kind on the tableService has always been friendly, non pretentious, accommodating. Passing thru from California and had to try this place which had so many great reviews. We were so excited to try the great food everyone was raving about. ..... Ok let's start why the Three stars. Three stars because the place definitely had a great ambiance and the customer service was good. (1927 Building that was once a school.) And I would love to say that the oysters were great and the only thing we loved. Two stars because I ordered the alligator and andouille gumbo and it was cold BUT I was brought a new hot one when I advised the waiter that the first gumbo was cold. Taste ahhh not much taste in the gumbo even after it was hot. We also ordered the seared yellow fin tuna over salad which was too hot. But didn't want to return anything back to the kitchen again. Chicken wings ordered Nashville style and Spicy and both did not have much flavor. Also tried the skillet corn bread with bacon and it was just ok. So after trying all these appetizers and not feeling it, we felt like maybe we will do better with the Entrees or small plates. Well everything we chose they were out of and at that point we were just frustrated. So we said ok let's try dessert and of course they were out of the Banoffee Pie so we had to go with the Sara'smores cake and it' was good with Ice cream. And we felt like we were done at that point. So finished up my Marilyn Monroe drink which was ok and our two great double bourbon drinks that we knew we couldn't go wrong with. I was so disappointed! So the one star because the food we did try was ehhh. Not much flavor to it and the hot seared fin tuna salad is a No No in Cali, cold gumbo should not be brought to a table. Saltine's is in a converted school. Stopped for brunch with friends. Very relaxed but great atmosphere. I had blackened catfish eggs Benedict while my friends had the oysters three way and the seafood platter. Plenty of food. Hush puppies on the seafood platter were Hugh! I have been to Saltine's often and have never been disappointed until last night. I went by myself as usual. Upon entering, I stated there was only one. The hostess insisted that I had to eat at either the bar or at one of the tall bar type tables. I don't drink alcoholic beverages and I wasn't looking to pick up anyone at a bar. There were plenty of tables available. As I was in a hurry I agreed . Bad mistake. As usual when a single is eating in bar area, you are ignored. After finally getting barkeep attention I was allowed to order. The food came quickly. It was the very best I had ever had there. I contemplated a dessert but could not get anyone's attention to order. I finally got barkeep attention for check. It took almost 15 minutes for her to return with my credit card . Totally unacceptable. I know the amount it took because I had somewhere to be. Lesson learned. Do not go to bar area to eat anywhere, especially if you are single. Restaurants need to understand that singles eat out more frequently than couples, they don't tie up tables with conversation, they generally have more disposable income. I will be back to saltines but not to bar area. If they insist I will leave. read more

Some people might say third time the charm but in this case it was second time. This was my return trip to Saltine and it was good...very good. The waitstaff was very attentive without being overbearing. The food was delicious. This time I went with the catfish poboy and I was very happy. The fries were fresh and tasty! I had a drink I can't remember the name but it had mint and ginger beer. (It's the one right above the mule). Get it! Get it! Get it! So refreshing and comforting at the same time. I enjoyed my lunch very much. My friend had the burger (double patty after discussing it with our waiter and he did not lead her wrong!) We had a good time catching up and just relaxing. Saltines was the perfect atmosphere for that. I thoroughly and wholeheartedly recommend it to any and everybody. I went in thinking of course I was going to get dessert but I left no room. Was excited about trying this restaurant based upon their on line menu. Arrived on Sunday evening around 7:30 pm was seated immediately. Great ambiance - choose from the menu - gumbo, oysters, gravy fries and small side salad. Oysters came out first, they were OK - hard to remove from shell as they were still attached - small side salad for my wife next - we then ordered our entrees while awaiting gumbo and gravy fries. After 15 minutes we enquirer about the gumbo and gravy fries and were told they were out of gumbo and gravy - so no go. After approximately another 15 minutes our serve came back and told us they were out of snapper and black fish which we had ordered. So we changed order to salmon - guess what they were out of salmon. So we just ordered brussel sprouts and cornbread and a couple of more drinks. If we had known when the hostess checked us in that they were out of their main menu options we would have gone somewhere else. We were not told until after we ordered all our food and it didn't come out that they were out of menu items. The excuse were that they had a busy weekend - poor planning and poor service. read more

Just reopened after Covid 19 restrictions. We felt safe. All staff wore masks and gloves. Seating was separated well. It was an enjoyable and pleasant early evening dining outside. The staff was very jolly and friendly. We were checked on by every staff member that walked by so you felt like you were serviced by 5 or 6 staff. The food was delicious. We had lunch here several months ago. My husband had the Nashville hot chicken, I had the low country boil. Mine was awesome, well seasoned and plentiful. I'm torn with this review. I really wanted to give this place 3 stars, but my fingers wouldn't let me. My mom ordered the oyster poboy. I ordered the roasted sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts. I've had better oyster poboys from "mom and pop" stores and they were cheaper. The veggie sides, however, were an unexpected surprise. They were perfectly roasted. Our waitress was attentive, but we were the only ones there for most of our visit. Nothing to rave about and not much to complain about. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but I would return if someone suggests it. read more

The acoustics in the dining area are so loud and overwhelming it is impossible to carry on a meaningful conversation. Everyone ends up yelling at the top of their lungs, repeating themselves numerous times, and then nodding blankly because they have no idea what anybody is saying. Why modern restaurants think this is a good idea, I will never know. I think I would have probably enjoyed the food. It looked good, but I couldn't eat any of it because I couldn't really find anything on the menu that looked safe to eat (gluten free). I would not recommend this place to anyone who has celiac disease, hearing loss, or sensory processing disorder. read more

Was really ready to try this restaurant a big fan of chef Jesse. Overall me and my gf stopped by for Sunday brunch our server Tavia ? Sorry if I butchered her name helped me out with selection. I chose to get the catfish Po boy my gf got the shrimp Po boy. Tavia asked would I like it beer battered or corn meal. She threw in that she likes the beer battered one better but some people don't like the flavor of texture of battered fish. I said alright battered it is xD. Very nice young lady. The food was meh I assume because it was Sunday. Both of our plates looked good but as a chef myself I knew we got the old fries. They were shriveled up and little bits of fry-pieces. On to the Po boys her Po boy was excellent but my Po boy was too salty but I had to balance it out with ketchup for sweetness. My wife and I took the kids to eat at Saltine last night. This is a great restaurant. The oysters were excellent (raw- is there any other way!?). They were very fresh and had great flavor. The bar did a fantastic job on their version of a "Moscow mule". My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I travel a good bit for work and I have to go to Boston on occasion and while there, I frequent Illegal Seafood- which is a seafood juggernaut. While not as good as Illegal Seafood's lobster roll, Saltine's version definitely puts up a good fight. That's strong and a huge compliment coming from a foodie such as myself. To top it off, our server was great. Wish I could remember his name because I would certainly post it here. I highly recommend Saltine. We look forward to heading back, soon. read more

I typically have a great experience at Saltines. The atmosphere is amazing, the service is top notch, and the food is delicious. Today must have been an off day in the kitchen. We didn't have any trouble getting seated because there wasn't a wait. However, it took almost an hour to get our food and mine wasn't hot at all. I love the shrimp and grits and order it often but today it wasn't the same. It took so long to receive our food we had to ask for the check and Togo plates because we had another engagement to get to. I'm not saying I will never be back to Saltines because it's one of my husbands favorite places; however, with today being Father's Day and wanting it to be a great day for him it was a disappointing experience. read more
