This was my first time, surprisingly I've driven by quite a few times! I knew it was a steak house so I had an inkling of what could be on the menu. Everything was a little pricey but once I saw the plates it seemed to have leveled out. The quality and service was 50/50 for me. Not to say it was bad but needs attention for sure. Their complimentary bread and butter although looked appetizing was regular wheat bread roll with a slightly sweetened butter. It just fell flat, keep in mind i am hungry and i was still not impressed. We arrived at 2 which is between rush hours so the place wasn't packed. The service from our waitress was great, super sweet and attentive on checking in. The complaint was the wait, we had enough time to consider going elsewhere. To the point I was scrolling on yelp for other options. The wait for the essentials drinks and our soup/salad seemed a bit too much. The salad was your basic iceburg lettuce with tomato, onions, cheese, and ranch. Keep it simple and it always hits, which it did. My chicken tortilla soup was very packed with chicken and the broth was good but a little too salty. The cup was larger than most places so I appreciated it. By the time we got our food, we put aside our complaints to dig in. My Salisbury Steak was a lump of meat that although I ordered medium rare was cooked and dry as hell. Thank god for the mushrooms and gravy on top because it saved the dish. So I focused on my sides. Which by the way charging $5 and some change for 2 jalepenos is ridiculous. These weren't even Serranos. My partners plate was a 5 star. His chicken fried steak had the crispy friedness and meat seaseoned to satisfaction. The loaded baked potato was divine. First of all, let's talk about Julian!!!!!! hands down the best bartender we've encountered in Texas, and that is not an exaggeration. This guy could easily be slinging cocktails at a swanky four-star steakhouse downtown and raking in the big bucks, but lucky for us, he's here at Saltgrass in Irving, just five minutes from our house. We popped in for happy hour (always on the lookout for a good deal) and ended up spending about $80 on two appetizers and five cocktails. How? Oh right....Julian's impeccable service and the generous tip we happily left him. The happy hour martinis (Tito's for $6!) were perfectly chilled with those dreamy ice crystals on top, just how I like it. Not only did Julian ice the glass and shake it just right, he even put a couple backup glasses chilling for my next pour. I mean... who does that anymore? He brought us the delicious warm bread and butter without us even asking, and we shared the fried mozzarella and tenderloin bites, both solid choices from the happy hour menu. To top it all off, Julian surprised us with a complimentary slice of carrot cake to welcome us on our first visit. Talk about service with heart. Saltgrass, you have a GEM behind the bar. The staff was great, but the cut of steak not so much. I'm a ribeye guy and I am always good with fat but there was no way this was 16oz. The old fashioned was made well but they offered me the happy hour which had bulleit, when they had an amazing buffalo trace old fashioned on the menu, why offer the cheap stuff?!?! I'm so glad I came out to the Saltgrass, as the food here was reasonably priced. If you're not into steaks (like me), there were many other alternative food options, plus a big bonus as there was a Monday night football game going on, and I got to watch part of the game from the restaurant. While looking over the menu, I decided to get the grilled salmon with a garden salad and a baked potato with some sourcream on top, while both of my coworkers gorgeded themselves on some juicy steaks. What can I say about the grub??? Unfortunately, ordering seafood at a steak house may not be the best idea, as my salmon was definitely overcooked. Lol! The Saltgrass Steak House kinda reminded me of a Stuart Anderson (what I have back home), where they have a cowboy themed decor within the restaurant. Additionally, the manager, Jaugues, came by to check on us, and I was impressed by his kindness and attentiveness. We have eaten here several times in the last 6 months but this weekend was definitely a souring experience, I doubt we will return. We usually get the prime rib and we both ordered prime rib again this weekend. I always order it medium rare, my boyfriend orders his medium when they ask how we want it. When it was brought to the table mine was nice and pink, his was gray and was scorched and burnt on the bottom. It was awful. We asked the server and they took it back, also agreeing it was clearly not good. A few minutes later a manager comes over and tells us 'this is a very awkward conversation' and there is no way for his chefs to know how to serve prime rib medium. What?! That is how it is typically served. He went on to slightly argue that it is designed to be cut and served as is so asking for a particular doneness is just not possible. It was really ridiculous. We asked them to just cut and serve it for him then. It was just awful to be made to feel like we had asked for anything unusual. And for a steakhouse manager to say his chefs don't know how to basically cook or serve meat to desired temp, makes no sense. It also severely lacked seasoning and the mashed potatoes were inedible. Saltgrass has a nice selection of entrees on their menu to make both of us happy. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a smile and seated immediately. Our server took our drink orders and said he'd be back as we decided what each of us wanted. My wife and I decided on the grilled chicken sandwich topped with bacon, jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, honey mustard and served with fries. I ordered the filet and shrimp, loaded baked potato and a salad with Bleu Cheese dressing. When our drinks arrived, a piping hot loaf of Saltgrass' awesome bread. It was so delicious. After a short wait and consuming too much bread, my wonderfully crisp and cold salad arrived. It was delicious. As I finished my awesome salad, our entrees were brought to our table. My wife's chicken sandwich was HUGE and piled a mile high with all the fixings. Since I ordered my steak "rare." the server asked me to cut into my steak to ensure it was cooked properly, it was, a perfect rare, just like I like my steaks prepared. It was Thanksgiving day and Saltgrass was one of the only things open in DFW. There were two that were closer to our hotel but they were both fully booked. This location had openings and I was so thankful. Every single person in the restaurant was welcoming and friendly. We had a nine month old with us and everybody was so kind to him. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. I spoke to a manager and told him I had never been to a restaurant anywhere where the entire staff was happy, helpful, and so friendly! My favorite menu item is the baked potato soup. I've been eating it for years and it's delicious every single time. As a Christmas gift every year my husband brings me a quart of your soup.
