My boyfriend and I recently stayed at the Robert Morris Inn and really double downed on eating there, hitting the tavern for both dinner and breakfast. And guess what? No regrets. Dinner rundown: -Crab Soup: 10/10 - creamy with big lumps of crab -Beef Tenderloin (special): 7.5/10 - great sides -Crab Cake: 9/10 - breaded, fresh crab -Sticky Toffee Pudding: 8/10 - very rich and sweet -Smith Island Cake: 9/10 - love a regional dessert The crab soup was honestly unreal. I mashed up both desserts into one giant sugar rush, because I'm a monster. It was awesome. And then you know, we turned around and did breakfast: -Egg White Frittata: 8/10 - yum goat cheese blobs -Crab Cake Benny: 7/10 - not too heavy -Old Bay Potatoes: 5.5/10 - undercooked -Biscuit: 10/10 - oh em geee, that's good Egg white frittata was perf if you accidentally ate 1k cal of dessert the night before. I LOVED the biscuit and def ask for a side of jelly for bonus points. Service was great and pro tip if you're staying at the inn, you get a $20 credit for breakfast per person. Maybe just get a basket of biscuits, idk TL;DR tavern is great for all meals. I recommend sitting inside in a booth for dinner to pick up some old timey vibes. Get some crab soup for dinner, and load up on biscuits in the AM. read more

The Robert Morris Inn is the perfect establishment for any special event. Our recent party enjoyed a delicious and elegant lunch by the best chef around, Mark Salter. Soup, vegetable curry, Short Ribs, Salmon with puffed pastry, Sticky Toffee pudding and Smith island cake. Naturally the service, drinks and staff were also excellent. Thank you Dexter. This historic gem is owned and managed by Ian and Elinior Fleming along with Mark. The atmosphere and beautiful Oxford waterside setting is spectacular. So fir the Inn. Perfect no complaints. For the Tavern and Food, not happy. We had 7:30 reservation on Saturday. Called and moved to 8:30. We checked into the Inn, changed came down. The Tavern Mgr was bartending. There were 4 tables still eating. When we said we had a reservation he made a comment that we should have been there at 7. He was annoyed. We said we called and moved it back. He checked the book and saw it was written 8:30 and stated he was never told. We got seated and then no one knew who was the waiter to take our table (again 3 tables eating one couple at the bar). Finally someone asked if we had been helped and gave us menus. We ordered. Appetizers were good. Mint Pea soup and Fried Ousters. I ordered Rockfish. I have never had such a "fishy" piece of fish. If it didn't have heavy seasoning it would have been sardine type of fishy. Service was bad. This place prides itself in ads as high end service. Never saw it. Had to ask the waiter to clear the appetizer plates. Had to ask for water refills. Had to ask for new cocktails. When we were done we waited 20 minutes. My girlfriend had to ask the waiter to bring dessert menus. This part irritated me. Found out there were specials. No one told us. Found out there was a drink and wine menu with specials. No one told us. Again when Deseret came we had to ask them to clear the dinner plates. Next day for brunch. (Again we were guest of the Inn). We walked up to the hostess station. No recognition from the same Manager. Asked for a table for two. 35 minute wait. Looked in the reservation book as he wrote down our names. No phone number or anything. He said he needed to clear some tables and kitchen needed to catch up. Ok. We went outside. We noticed people coming and waiting. We noticed people getting sat (remember we looked in the book) and my girlfriend got annoyed as it took so long and people were getting sat ahead. Finally we got sat. Turns out if your a local and know the manager you are going to get seated no matter what. We talked to the different guest and found out that everyone was local. So moral is if you are a guest at the inn, have a reservation, doesn't matter. It's all about who you know. The inn and the inn keepers are great. They food Manager is horrible and only chats it up if you are a local. Sad that the inn states it prides itself on service as the Tavern did not have good service and the food was ok at best. My husband and I ate at the Taproom for dinner and the dark wood definitely makes you feel like you are in an old British pub. The appetizers were both outstanding - crab soup and the crab egg roll. I would say it's the best cream of crab soup I have ever had. The crab egg roll comes with avocados, grapefruit, and almonds and it was hard to share this dish as well. My husband ordered the lamb curry and I had the flounder fish and chips. He enjoyed his lamb curry but the portion could have been a little bigger. I enjoyed the fish and chips but would have preferred a lighter batter. You could tell the fish was fresh which is always a plus. Of course I saved room for the Smith Island cake which is many layers of alternating chocolate frosting and vanilla cake. The homemade chantilly cream was divine and really made the cake. I would no doubt return here next time I visit Oxford. I also love the history of the Robert Morris Inn and it's neat to dine in a historical inn. read more

The spinach and feta cheese egg white frittata was good, but that says more about a healthy option than the way it was prepared. I appreciate that the chef didn't skimp on the spinach. Dark and stuffy I would not return. Service was good but the food mediocre at best, particularly for the prices (which are DC but not close to quality). Casear salad to start was good, but how hard is it to screw up? Main course - "crispy" duck. 1st off nothing was crispy. It was warm and the vegetables on the cool side. I was looking forward to the Brussels sprouts with bacon, and received about 4 sprouts. The roasted root vegetables were dry. My wife had fish and chips with green peas. She was very disappointed. The hamburger, as promoted by our server, was one of the very best burgers I have ever had due to the high quality of meat. Seared tuna was excellent and the appetizer of a deep fried avocado (sounds odd, I know) was a delight. Breakfast, if you are in the area, was very very good. It took as long to get desert as it did to get the main meal, and I had to get up twice to get a server. I've reviewed this on a different site, the restaurant reached out and paid lip service. We were staying on our boat and this appeared to be one of our only choices and a close walk. I didn't think the yelp reviews were that great but we tried it anyway. I have to say it was one of our best meals yet in Chesapeake Bay including restaurants in Annapolis. We had the oysters, butternut squash soup, crab cake and filet, all were awesome. This is another great restaurant on the Eastern Shore. In the summer we take our boat to the restaurant and tie off on the public dock while we eat...so much fun and the kids live it...we always sit outside on the patio...it is lovely During the winter we drive and sit inside. Well, it's a bad restaurant. We came for brunch and ordered on omelette and pancakes. Pretty simple. We got a large plate with a little omelette sitting sad in the middle of it with nothing on the side. The omelette tasted bad, was not done properly. They really don't make an effort there. The worst part is the service, it took ages to find the host and get seated ("Im sorry I'm not the host"), and then ages again to find our waitress to ask for the bill ("Im sorry I'm not your waiter"). The bill was also wrong, they over charged us, but it was not worth our time to ask for them to fix it. read more

I'm very disappointed to have to update my review downwards. Based on our most excellent dinner there in January, my girlfriend and I planned a long weekend stay for the Spring. Having just got back from 3 days and 2 nights at RMI, I have no choice but to reassess my review. The update comes in two parts: One for the Tavern and the other for the Inn itself. First, I'll start by saying the crabcakes are still delicious. It was the first thing I had for dinner the Friday night that we arrived. Salter's Tavern is the crabcake that I'll measure all future crabcakes by. Unfortunately, after 4 more meals at Salter's (2 breakfasts and 2 dinners) I now understand the complaints others have about the service. I'm not sure if they are understaffed, but the service is slow and I believe that resulted in a couple of my meals being served lukewarm (at best). And I'm not talking about slow in terms of "kicking back and relaxing from the city life pace" slow... I'm talking, "Have they forgotten we're here?" slow. I mean, c'mon, 20 minutes to get drinks during one breakfast? And no opportunity to get a refill 3 out of 4 meals? Perhaps I got lucky the first time I ate at Salter's and happened in on an unbusy evening, but the service during my long weekend stay was no where near as outstanding as it was then. And I felt for the wait staff, too, because they were trying their hardest and I could tell they were truly sorry for the delays. As far as the food itself, still very good if it had been served in a timely manner. Both breakfast's were tasty but suffered from being served lukewarm. I already mentioned the crabcake (warm, but not hot) for one dinner. For my other dinner I had the pork tenderloin. It was good but didn't compare to the crabcakes. At least it was served hot. The desserts were outstanding though. My girlfriend and I had the multilayer, coconut/lemon cake and the chocolate/strawberry desserts both nights. As for the Inn, very charming, BUT consider what you're getting yourself into: this is a very old building. I don't believe there is a right angle left intact in any given room. Certainly not in the room we were in. While quirky, the extreme sloping of the bedroom and bathroom floors had a disconcerting effect after the 2nd day. Because of that, I don't think I'd book for more than weekend if I booked again. Also, the wallpaper coming down in some areas and the resto's exhaust vent below the rear windows didn't make for a pleasant experience. We couldn't leave the rear windows open to enjoy the fresh spring air because of the exhaust vent. And the claw foot tub leaked considerably when used. None of these alone (well, except maybe the vent) are terribly bad but add them all up and it starts to become noticeable. That all being said, the location is excellent and overall my girlfriend and I had a good weekend. We walked, biked and kayaked the charming surrounding areas the whole weekend. I can't bring myself to say I regret booking RMI but based on my earlier January visit I guess my expectations were pretty high for the weekend. I suppose I was hoping that I'd found my go-to Eastern Shore vacation spot. I might be back some day, but I'll be looking around for another spot the next time I visit the Eastern Shore for a long weekend. Nevertheless, thanks for the effort and I hope RMI can improve the experience for future visitors. read more

From the moment we stepped in to discuss the possibility of having our wedding weekend here to the last hours of our adventure, we encountered the quintessential professionalism and family feel of the folks at RMI. Our friends and families will measure all other weddings against this one, and I believe most will fall short, as the weekend was a magical experience. Eve (our wedding coordinator), Ian (proprietor), Chef Salter (proprietor), Elinor, Janet, Kathy, Marguerite, David, and everyone else at RMI spoiled us (I am so sorry if I forgot your names - I would love to thank every one of you personally and repeatedly). We are eternally grateful for the generous hospitality. I would highly recommend their inn to anyone looking for the perfect spot. Whether you are hosting a large event or seeking an intimate weekend getaway, RMI will take great care of you. We arrived Friday evening with around 75 guests checking into their rooms and having dinner. The food was amazing: fried chicken, corn on the cob, cole slaw with blue cheese & apples, tomato salad, apple crisp and brownies to name a few of the offerings. All were cooked/baked to perfection, and served throughout the evening so that nothing got too cold or dry. The guests who ate latest had the same tasty experience as those who raided the buffet first. Breakfasts were spectacular. Our guests commented on how wonderful the food was, and I have never seen bacon so consistently cooked to perfection. The vegetable frittata and the scones were my personal favorites. Others thought the muffins were scrumptious. I appreciated that there were plenty of options for even the fussiest palates. Saturday night's dinner was a masterpiece. Ian designed and constructed lovely menus with a personal logo on it that he had created. The presentation was gorgeous, quality of the food was first rate, and the taste was five stars. All of our guests were thoroughly impressed with Chef Salter's culinary skills. We were equally impressed with everyone's professionalism and kindness. I have never been to a wedding where servers were so attentive to everyone's needs. They even noticed little things; like when my cousin's wife went up to the room with their child to feed her, a sweet server offered to keep my cousin's food warm while he waited for his wife to return. We chose Smith Island cakes for dessert, and Ian designed a logo exclusively for our cake. It was such a beautiful touch, and Ian has great artistic ability. Chef Salter personally served cake to our guests, a unique gesture that touched me very deeply. It is not very often that someone of his stature and ability would come out of the kitchen to take such personal care of guests, and I am incredibly grateful that he did so for ours. The rest of the reception was a ton of fun, and the great people at Robert Morris Inn made sure to take care of every detail, including the ones we had not thought of. My wife took me here for a getaway birthday weekend and we enjoyed a quiet trip while meeting some new people along the way. The breakfast was good for $18/each at the tavern which was good. I had an omelet with blueberry pancakes. The coffee was delicious if you appreciate a good cup. The Bay water level was high which hindered activities. The room was typical B&B size but the bathroom was tiny like RV tiny. read more

Tavern Review Only: We ate at the Robert Morris Inn for two meals while staying at the Sandaway Resort. I cannot sing the praises of the tavern loudly enough. I have food allergies and the chef was very flexible and accommodating. My server in the evening (Meredith) made sure that I didn't get sick at all and was very friendly. Our meal was outstanding (my mom got crabcakes) and my mom got to try Smith Island Cake and I got (amazing) pavlova! Dessert was great. Breakfast was also OK. After mentioning a dairy allergy explicitely to my server, she brought me iced coffee with milk *already* in it (why?!?), she was nice and fixed it but I had to wait another 10 minutes for my coffee. My oatmeal and fruit, however, cost upwards of $15 - it was picturesque, but very very pricey. Tip: Make sure that you ask for the dining room or dine outdoors. We sat in a darker area where we felt like we were in an old prison cell. read more

Food is surprisingly amazing given that Oxford is quite a small little ville. There are usually a few specials in addition to the ample selections on the menu. On both our visits we opted towards seafood selections and were not disappointed. Keep in mind that Monday nights all wine bottles are half off, making it a great opportunity to sample one of those bottles that you might shy away from otherwise. Our service on both ocasions was exemplary, with our servers sharing a bit of local history in addition to great insights on wine and food. If you are staying at the inn, be forewarned that a couple of the rooms in the "old section" (original building) are associated with varying degrees of paranormal activity. read more

We have been to this restaurant several times over the years as an escape from the city to go back in history. The area is just extremely peaceful and has cute elements like the oldest private ferry, the yacht club, and the historic customs. While I do certainly enjoy the historic ambiance, each time I am extremely disappointed that this restaurant has flies. I don't know what the cause is, but when we all try to keep them away, no server has ever come up with an apology and reaction. The service is usually good, and the menu doesn't change much. I usually get the seafood platter, which is OK, but doesn't really justify the hike to Oxford from DC. The crabcake is slightly disappointing and the cream of crab soup has a consistency problem. The best item was the freshly baked bread last time we went there. Second to best was the crab roll appetizer, which resembles a spring roll with crab meat, but it is missing a dipping sauce. read more

My BF took me here for dinner for my birthday last Saturday night and it was as good in person as I had imagined from seeing the FB posts! The Rob Morris is the oldest Inn in MD (built in 1710) the chairs in the dining room looked like they could be original! They had both fireplaces crackling and the ambiance was perfect! We each ordered a drink and the smoked blue fish pate to get started and for entrees we got the steak and the lobster Alfredo... We traded plates about half way through. We were too full for dessert, but the selection looked good. Our server did a fine job. Would happily go back again! The inn has an entry in the Haunted Eastern Shore or Mid-shore book. read more

This is a beautiful building with a very friendly/welcoming host/hostess. Inside it's quite old/charming and the tavern is a great place to eat (less formal than the restaurant)... the cocktails were fabulous ... :-) We had the rockfish special and the award-winning crab cake... both were very good, but we felt a little bit over-priced at $28 and $29 respectively. Chocolate Carrot Cake at $9 was also inexplicably expensive and not a successful combination in our opinion... We may return... we definitely enjoyed the food... but $30 for a main course and $9 for dessert in the middle of nowhere is hard to fathom....? ;-) read more

Spent part of our holiday here. Made about a 40 mile round trip for oft raved about food. Sadly, it wasn't worth 40 feet. The crab soup was floury and thick. While it had a good flavor, the Caesar salad was swimming in dressing and not very cold. The one small piece of cod on the Fish and Chips plate was thickly battered. It and the peas were not fresh. The hamburger was lacking in flavor and just so-so. This is a pretty simple dish so should have been way better. The frozen shoestring fries were actually pretty good, as were the beers. Otherwise, I'd say it's time for a refresh of the menu as well as the decor and food quality at Salter's Tavern. We will say that Patrick, our server was a delight. We had a delightful dinner last evening looking over the river and the ferry dock. We started with cream of crab soup and gazpacho with added crab meet on top (one of the specials). With this we had the avocado fries, a very innovative, panko encrusted delight. Dinner was local rockfish over homemade succotash made from local vegetables (also an evening special). We also enjoyed the crab cake entree. Service was excellent (Joseph). Drinks were generously poured. Altogether a great evening. Next it was on to the Creamery for dessert. read more

This is for Salter's Tavern. We had 2 meals here, dinner and Sunday brunch. Dinner: The menu was simple however over priced. We ordered some drinks, the spring roll and the Salter's seafood platter. The spring roll was AMAZING but $14 for 1 roll was a bit much. The platter was $32 and most items on the plate tasted like they were from the freezer opposed to fresh. The drinks were fine and the service was average. Brunch was a bit better and on par with normal pricing. Beautiful, sunny fall day and my friend chose this restaurant that I'd never visited. The cream of crab soup was excellent, as was the Reuben sandwich. Homemade chips were so salty they were not eaten.Service was attentive. Lovely water view from the outside. What a dark, gloomy place in the dining room though, with all the brown paneling and furniture; poor lighting. I'll only return when outside seating is open. read more
