Very friendly and accommodating owners who are carrying on a family tradition! We had an excellent dinner from appetizer (calamari with marinara sauce was perfect - loved the banana pepper on the side), caesar salad, entrees, and tiramisu for dessert which had to have been the best we have ever tried! Extensive wine list with a great selection. We love Italian wines! As a nice bonus, it was Tuesday night with live entertainment. The acoustic guitarist/singer made it a very special evening. I wanted to really like this place and they do make an effort, but between the "small" plate concept and the prices, I felt disappointed. The wait staff was great, friendly and knowledgeable, the food was tasty but "small" plates with big prices, $12 for two little crab cakes and $8 for some meat sauce on polenta, isn't going to get me to come back. Husband and I went on a Tuesday night, it was Pizza night but we opted for entrees. The food and service were terrific. There was live music, one guy with a guitar playing popular music. We had a cocktail Attlee the bar after dinner and enjoyed great conversation with local people. Hight recommend. Oxford is a lovely little town. Cozy and a bit formal.... attentive service. I had the swordfish skewers with risotto cake, and it was delicious. The "curry" sauce was a bit odd as a pairing. It tasted of garam masala or cinnamon; it would have been better to pair with a coconut-based green or red curry. It's the charm of Pope's that initially get your attention. There aren't many locations to dine at in Oxford and I wanted something in walking distance of where I was staying for the weekend. We were able to get a table outside despite not having reservations. There were 3 specials that night but I chose the linguini and clams which is on their current menu. The wine list is extensive. Having had wine before walking over I didn't order any. Next time perhaps? The linguini was made with squid ink and had pieces of clams mixed in as well as surrounded with clams in the shells. Presentation was a plus. The sauce was fantastic and I didn't save any for leftovers. The dish was just THAT good. If you're looking for something cozy and delish with a good price point here's your place. read more

Stellar food. My father-in-law proclaims they have the best burger on the Eastern Shore. I had the special: potato wrapped halibut- beautiful presentation, flaky potato baked around a hunk of high quality halibut. The ceviche was so fresh and brightly flavored. My husband ordered the crab cake. (meaty, crispy outside... I only had one bite because it disappeared so quickly). The succotash was my personal favorite. The wait staff is always genuinely friendly- and while I wish they had a high chair- they were patient, accommodating and sweet with our little kids. read more

Wow! What a delicious meal and incredible service, to boot! We needed a ride from the marina since we came by boat and one of the owners actually came and picked us up and even brought us back afterwards! Everything was homemade and it felt like it was all prepared with such care. The eggplant rollatini was light and delicate and the lasagne was one of the best we ever had. Scotts Sr, Jr, and Mom, imbue family warmth into this charming, Mediterranean restaurant with pressed tin ceilings and old world charm. Feels like it's been there for three generations. Both our entrees, the veal sorrentino and eggplant rollatini (basically a la parmigiana) were superb and generous to a fault as were the appetizer snails in garlic, butter, and parsley sauce. My only faults to note were the uninspired calamari and the cannoli, but I feel confident those will be remedied. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. One of the best meals I have had. I had seared scallops and my husband had a mushroom pasta dish. Both were excellent. We finished with a Nutella creme brûlée. We had a wonderful experience at Pope's Tavern last Friday evening. I say experience because it's more than the outstanding food. The atmosphere, decor, and demeanor of the wait staff combined to provide a romantic dining experience. The quaint dining room has warm wood tones complemented by Tuscan yellow walls. The wine rack and bar offer excellent selections. We enjoyed an Alsace French Riesling (should have been chilled more before serving) and fig and prosciutto topped flatbread that was really delicious. The main dish preparations of the rockfish and the gnocchi with grilled artichokes were inventive and extremely tasty. Though the flourless chocolate cake was very good, the salted caramel ice cream with salted caramel biscotti stole the show. (After tasting the biscotti I bargained with my husband so he'd let me finish his -lol!) Really a marvelous dining experience where you can enjoy the food, atmosphere and the company! read more

This restaurant was somewhat of a disappointment. I ordered the crab and corn soup, which was excellent. My wife ordered a salad which she enjoyed. We both ordered crab cakes for our entrees. I almost always add salt to my food. In this case, the crab cakes were so salty that we were unable to eat them. We sent them back. The waiter returned to tell us that the crab cakes we were served had been made by the chef who had left the previous day, and that the new chef was preparing her crab cakes for us. The second round of crab cakes was excellent. Serving patrons leftover crab from the previous day was, in our estimation, inexcusable. read more

I probably cannot say enough good things about this place. The food was incredible, the staff/service is perfect, and the atmosphere is lovely. The chef has a brilliant touch for what's local and fresh...get whatever the fish or oyster special of the day is and you won't be disappointed. I'm sure the menu changes often, but we enjoyed: oysters on the half-shell, the appetizer with pork and plantains, the flounder, the swordfish and crab-stuffing. A rare treat in a charming town. I joined my parents for their anniversary celebration, along with family and friends. We started with $1 oysters, fried and "Pope's style," half a dozen each. Pope's style were similar to Oysters Rockefeller, except more tasty. They were served with just the right proportions of creamy goodness, bacon, spinach, and a golden-brown Parmesan topping. My dad ordered the Rockefeller stew and reported that it was decent, although perhaps "too creamy," and "not tasty enough..." A small setback in what proved to be a top-notch meal. For dinner, my parents ordered filet mignon served with mashed potato "cannolis." The steaks were delivered the right temperature and color. My brother ordered a bone-in veal chop, which he ranked "among the best" he's ever had. It was unfortunate that my meal was not quite up to par with the rest of the table. I ordered Alsatian-braised pork ribs with sausage, sauerkraut, and brussel sprouts. The concept was interesting but the execution was lacking. The ribs were tough and under-cooked. Braised my left foot. Boiled, maybe. I decided not to send my plate back, since the dining room was bustling with several large dinner parties, and I didn't want to file any complaints during an otherwise pleasurable dining experience. When the check arrived, the waitress noted that she had suspected the ribs were not fully cooked and had comped it on our check. With friendly service and otherwise positive reviews from the rest of our table, I'll be sure to return to Pope's for another meal. A rare treat, indeed. read more

We sailed into Oxford Md. late afternoon on a Saturday. Menu looked fresh and creative so we set out on foot. The Yelp directions strangely seemed to stop halfway, but we managed to find it. Make a reservation, 'cos this place is popular! we were seated at the bar. The staff could not have been more pleasant. We ordered cocktails which were perfect. Our starters were squash blossoms stuffed with crab and a BLT salad both excellent choices. My flounder was superb, very fresh, perfectly cooked, moist with a terrific creamy lemon caper sauce with artichokes on a mound of mashed potatoes. Couldn't resist the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. They gave us a large slice and it was super dense, just how I like it. But the best part was meeting the delightful owner Dan and his daughter, when we explained that one person in our party had been sick all day (in fact he hadn't been able to eat) and that we had walked further than we thought, they readily offered to take us back in the "Pope's " mobile, an old taxi. So nice of them,we were very grateful. In fact Dan told us if you are far away and give them a call they will pick you up. Dan said the restaurant "was his wife's idea" and that she was the chef! Hats off to her. Really recommend this restaurant. read more

I've been wanting to try this place out for a while and finally got the chance to go for lunch on Oxford Day. There were six of us, and I can honestly say that the only good thing we ordered was a small bowl of clam chowder. Even the cheese pizza we ordered for the kids was majorly disappointing, even though we weren't really expecting much from that. If I wanted ketchup and cheese on a cracker, I could've done that at home. I ordered the lasagna, and while it had good flavor, it was burnt on the top and sides. The water that was poured had particles floating in it, and a margarita had to be sent back because of multiple black hairs in it. Everyone at the table was disappointed in their meal. Some meals couldn't even be finished, they were so bad. Not at all worth the price, which was astronomical, considering the crap that was served. We will NOT be returning. read more

Mine was a terrible one. I was a woman of color who had taken a good spot in the restaurant, and in the middle of eating my meal- they asked me to move. After by the way, I had been sitting there for 30 minutes. And should I say, that apparently after I left no one ever came to claim the spot. I left, because that is what someone with self respect would do when treated like the help. Should I point out- that at no point was I an 'invited guest' to a public restaurant who was serving lunch to anyone that walked up the street. I have a chip on my shoulder for wanting to be treated with respect? I've been to most of the worlds 3 star Michelin restaurants and I can tell you, the most amazing experiences are the ones where the staff and chef treat people with humility and dignity. ALSO LISA- PEOPLE OF COLOR CAN HAVE CHIPS ON THEIR SHOULDER IF THEY SO CHOOSE. It's a product of being a successful human being with some degree of self respect. Lisa assumed that they are justified in treating me poorly because I knew the people that played there for 3 hours. Not accounting for the fact, that I paid for my meal- which when I kindly told her about 3 hours after I had left- she told me they will comp my meal- to which I said No, Thank you. You cannot treat people like they don't matter because you perceive them to be inferior, and deserving of less than exemplary behavior. Guess what that makes you?! I SHOULD ALSO POINT OUT, THAT LISA WAS CONDESCENDING , AND AFTER I POSTED THIS REVIEW, CALLED ME ON MY CELL TO THREATEN ME. WHO DOES THAT? She has my number from when I had called them to talk to her. Original comments- Bad food and even worse service. Don't go there. Take with a grain of salt that the previous reviews of the restaurant with the same name are not for this place. New owners transformed it into an Italian eatery, but have not done much to the dark, dingy atmosphere. All I can say is "design matters" when it comes to decor and menu design, neither of which have been addressed. You enter into a dark entryway looking up carpeted stairs which face a guest bathroom upstairs. I think I even saw a partially clothed hotel guest leaving the bathroom. An office next to the entryway is overflowing with junk and a dessert case? Menu is cluttered, ugly and unreadable in any light. And all this before we even got to eat. Wine list was a 5 page mess of a printout from an office laser printer. Gnocchi were good as was the Alfredo sauce. Bread was disappointing. What they called a vegan entree was barely cooked mushroom and peppers in a balsamic sauce over pasta. It was terrible. When we complained we were offered pasta with marinara sauce. 30 minutes later waiter came to tell us that the marinara sauce had cheese in it but offered us buttered noodles instead. Hmmmm, not exactly vegan. Not going back. read more

We started with enjoying a cocktail from the bar, sitting on the front porch on a warm summer evening. Relaxing. Dinner started with Tuna Tartar with homemade wontons, which was excellent. Dinner was a large crabcake, full lump and no filler - pure Maryland. I had Rockfish over succotash. Every bite was wonderful. We really enjoyed everything. Finished with a creme brulee that was nice and light. We also had breakfast the next morning. Full breakfast with scones, croissant, fresh fruit, asparagus fritatta, and thick cut applewood smoked bacon. Excellent.
