Cute bar with great service and decent food. My boyfriend and I started off with some delicious cocktails along with complimentary focaccia bread. A nice touch. Our server was wonderful! He even noticed that we hated the music playing and changed it. Thank you! We started off with some fabulous pork belly beignets (the best thing we ate), then shared the gnocchi in a truffle brown butter sauce (good flavor, but the gnocchi could have been lighter and not pan fried), and finished with the maple pork tenderloin which was pretty disappointing. The char on the meat was overwhelming and dominated the flavor of the dish. Also a bit dry, and the sauce was nothing special. I enjoyed the potato's, but the green beans were lackluster at best. We sat down at 730pm and didn't get our food till 9pm. Restaurant wasn't busy was at all. Drinks were good but took a while to get. We didn't get apps. The food was horrendous. The confused menu should have been our first red flag but with good reviews, we went for it. The Thai salad was welted, the dressing on it had a loss of identity. The Cuban mojo shrimp appetizer was served in a watered down broth in a cast skillet, the shrimp wasn't even cooked in that skillet not to mention waaaaaaay overcooked. Awful orange-y taste. I wanted to stop there our entrees were already fired. The short rib burger and the cod with risotto were both a hooooot mess. And even all that cheese couldn't hide the mistreatment of the risotto nor the poor burger. read more

Part II - First of all. There are a few places to eat in Saugerties. A lot of them are great! But when it comes to badass food, there are now two places. Miss Lucy's has been here for years and is just wonderful. And before I get more into Salt and Fire, this is a great place. Run, don't walk! You'll love it. I'm here on my second visit. I started off with some lively conversation at the bar. Good times! First on my list was the Primavera Salad. Butter lettuce, peas, asparagus, some little pieces of radish, and the best lemon vinaigrette I've had in a long time. Soooo good. If I was to critique it I would say - More lettuce (way more) and less peas (like 90%) Ahhh... the Mussels. Excellent as well! I hate to say it but the broth/sauce might be better than the Mussels! My wife and I did a last minute trip to the area. We are a Queer POC couple from NJ/NY. We stumbled upon Salt & Fire for brunch and we were NOT disappointed. Very cute and cozy place. Great service- DELICIOUS food and drinks. We just finished dinner at Salt & Fire. The service was OK. The food was mixed. The Waldorf salad was good as were the oysters. The vegetarian risotto was awful. The vegetables were grossly overcooked and the mushrooms were hard to find-- we sent it back. The new owners haven't kept up the quality at all. Sad! read more

Excellent! Came for dinner and had a really memorable meal. Shared a great ceviche to start. For main course had duck, steak and pork, all were fantastic. Drinks menu was also good. Venue is nice inside a couple of different seating areas and K think an upstairs dining room. Service was attentive and excellent. A great experience both with respect to service and food quality. Our waiter was a jolly fellow with a big beard. He was a delight to interact with despite our numerous requests for yellow fin ceviche which he informed our party of four initially, was not available. We had a selection of appetizers rather than getting four entrees. In total six appetizers ranging from oysters, moules frites, and a flight of crostini. Despite making an early rez a couple weeks in advance (doable only by phone with no ability to confirm ), we wound up in the back bar area, a little annoying but probably ultimately more comfortable on a chilly winter night. Starters were sensational - a lush tomato bisque and smoky spinach salad. Mains were solid if not knockout - a beautifully grilled steak frite and a cod puttanesca stuck in an identity crisis between bouillabaisse and plate, too soupy and blandly salty. I reviewed Salt & Fire about 6 months after they opened and I wasn't that kind. However after a few more visits over the last few years I decided it was time to give them the accolades they deserve. Salt and Fire is currently the best high end restaurant in the village of Saugerties. I am not saying it's my favorite restaurant but if you are looking for a date night spot or a place to impress your out of town family/friends then hands down Salt & Fire delivers. I can get into the various dishes but currently the maple chipotle pork chop is my favorite with the Peruvian wood fired chicken is a close 2nd. In my last review the cocktails and draft beer selection was really the only redeemable reason to go back and it has gotten even better. Service is exactly what you would expect from a higher end restaurant. Tip the staff well. They deserve it. A bonus is on weekends if you don't feel like ending your night early walk right on over to the Partition bar which is practically the backyard of Salt & Fire and enjoy live music and some more drinks. read more

Probably my favorite restaurant so far in Saugerties. I wanted to try so much more so I know I'll be back. The service was good. Loved the bread n butter but didn't want to get full on it so had to stop. The butter had a good flavor. The goat cheese app was yummy and filling. The steak was really good however under cooked. I wanted medium well and came out like medium rare. The bar fever was really nice about sending it back to cook more. When it came back after a while it was still more like medium but I was able to eat it and I was hungry and it was delicious. The potatoes were really good too (like at miss Lucy's). Drink was good. We loved our meal here. The atmosphere was very welcoming and warm. Our food was superb from our salads to our main meals of scallops and duck. One star removed for the waitress not letting us know about the specials despite the fact that both tables to our left and right were notified. Also, we had to repeatedly ask the waitress for more drinks. Plus we were in the bar area which was kind of noisy. It would have been a bit nicer to be in the dining room area. We had an OK dinner here before so we decided to give it another chance. My husband's steak was fine but the giant serving of fries with it was meh. The worst thing was the vegetable risotto. I was looking forward to something simple and soothing. It touted 2 or 3 different types of mushrooms first. I think I found 1/2 of one. There were other tortured vegetables like Brussels sprouts cooked beyond recognition into mush. The risotto itself was gummy and tasted weird. The whole thing was like eating the stuff that ends up in your sink strainer when you are scraping your dishes. Awful! read more

Was sad to see Bella Luna go, but the owners of Main St taking over this place was the best scenario I could've envisioned. I get Main st almost every week I'm up here so the thought of the same people running an upscale restaurant sounds good to me. They didn't bother to update a ton with the old place which is fine by me; main change were tables in the bar area which makes sense. We sat on the porch, which was a mistake in hindsight because of the bugs when it got dark. Service was a little hot/cold (especially since there was only 1 bartender) but consistently friendly; as they get more time under their belt, I'm sure they'll hit a groove. I got 2 cocktails, the first of which was a bourbon cocktail with a red wine float that was just ok (heavy on the wine), and the second was a take on a smoked old fashioned. The smoked presentation was tableside which was very cool, however they went way overboard on the bourbon. Still enjoyed it but damn! They seem to have latched onto the 'stingy bread ' trend as we got 2 small pieces, however they were happy to give more. The bread is homemade and it's damned good with the whipped butter. Brussel sprouts appetizer is good which is kind of cheating, as the recipe is from a fried Brussel sprouts vendor up here that shows up at festivals. These are on point and come with vegan aioli which is really awesome (and I am NOT a vegan person). For my main I got the halibut. I have found a rule with fish entrees: either you get a great piece of fish but the sides are ehh, or the sides are great but the fish is ehh. Unfortunately in this case it was the former. Truly great piece of halibut that was seared perfectly, however the sides with it were generic vegetables and the sauce was a mostly flavorless green sauce. My wife got the wood fired chicken which she really liked. Ended up skipping dessert due to the size of our entrees, although I did espresso which is decent. All in all I thought Salt and Fire was pricey but fills a niche in town. Considering Miss Lucy's is more eclectic/trendy, and Diamond Mills tries a bit too hard, they kind of fit right in between including similar price points. As time goes on I think they'll only get better. My meal was probably closer to 3 stars, but I'm rounding up to 4 as these are really good people. read more

Husband & I just had the pleasure of eating at @ Salt & Fire, and I'd like to put emphasis on the FIRE because this place is . Everything was exceptional, from the bread with homemade compound butter (YUM), the appetizers (we had the calamari with harissa crema, and Brussels sprouts), to the mock tails (we don't drink & we LOVED the cranberry ginger!) and the entrees. Details are on point with unique flavors elevating the classics, and the plating was so beautiful it was hard to take a bite! For entrees we had the gnocchi with mushrooms, & the sea scallops. Both were delicious & unique, generous portions and came out promptly. I would have taken photos of our food but unfortunately, nothing lasted long enough for me to do so The staff is so friendly and welcoming! The best combination of local comfort & upscale dining. We ordered the mussels(fresh and light), calamari apps(decent), surf n turf special (really good but too much oil on plate) and steak with chimichurri,asparagus and potatoes(delish)Really wanted to give this restaurant 5stars but it definitely fell short. The ambiance was very nice, The service really turned our experience around, when you have to wait almost two hours to receive your food that's a big management issue. While dining 3 different parties had already been there waiting for who knows how long and all 3 had complaints with their server, we even received our appetizers before others who were waiting before us. One table even asked for their meals to go because it was taking so long. Perhaps they need a bigger kitchen and at least another chef to help out. Also I'm so glad we had cash on us because they charge a 4-5% fee for using (debit/credit) cards. Not sure if I would come back. read more

We went to Salt & Fire on my Birthday, having never been there before. It was a wonderful night~ From the food, service and ambience. It was a quiet night~but it looked like the entire kitchen came out to sing Happy Birthday to me. We began the evening with the 'Flaming' Old Fashioned Cocktail~ Amazing drink! From the Focaccia bread, Cambas Wood Fired Shrimp, Wood Fired Artichoke Skewers with Feta, Lemon & Honey Wood Fired Brussels Sprouts, and the Braised Short Rib Pappardelle each dish better than the previous one. O like s restaurant where they keep it simple but exquisitely flavored. Even had the cheese cake at the end, suggested by our wait server. Strange review: the food was mostly outstanding but the service was bad enough to make me not want to return. Food: 4.5, Service 1. I made the reservation weeks ahead. We were greeted by the hostess with apathy and taken to the outside deck. I told the young woman i wanted to sit inside. she replied, "I can't do anything about that". Live music was playing outside from the venue next door, and the space was basic: white plastic tables and chairs , overlooking a sea of concrete; more akin to a diner than the nearly $100/person meal we had. Most indoor tables were still vacant, and I told the server I hadn't requested outdoor seating, and this was a special occasion. I considered leaving, and she somehow found me a table indoors, clearly begrudgingly. Our waiter came a while later. Drinks arrived slowly. Our mushroom flatbread was delicious -- memorable. We waited over an hour more before we saw our entrees. Nobody explained or apologized for the delay. Something was going on that day -- nobody in the restaurant had any solid food on their table, and wait staff kept lingering around the kitchen. The staff didn't seem to try to connect ever, really, with their customers, except perfunctorily. They were MIA for an hour. Nobody filled our empty water glasses or poured the rest of our bottled wine. I've worked restaurants and shit happens, and all people want is to know that you care to do better and most are generally understanding. These folks didn't seem to care at all. The main vibe was apathy and indifference. I can forgive most any mistake, but work with me and admit when service comes to a halt for an hour! My scallops and risotto were finally served hot, and quite good - not overcooked, though there was no sear. Our duck was overdone and dry with soggy skin (we told them to cook it "as the chef prefers"). We were not asked about dessert, but had to wait a while to get our check and pay it. read more

I can't attest to the past negative reviews because we had a fantastic brunch today. It started when I called to make the reservation and Joe answered and said hey you might not need one but you know, since I've got you on the phone, let's get you taken care of. Right off, great customer service. We showed up today at noon and had a wonderful time from the moment we walked in. We sat in the bar area but there's also a rather large dining room as well. Britney (sorry, I hope that's how you spell it!), was our server, as well as bartender, gift card giver and all around mistress of ceremonies. She was so energetic and friendly and I knew I was in good hands when I order the shrimp and grits and she looked at me and said "great choice". Hubs got the chicken and waffles and we also got a Caesar salad. We've been home for hours and we're still taking about the food. The chicken and waffles were the perfect balance of malty waffle, moist chicken (cooked just right which is rare to do with chicken breast) and the sweet, slightly spicy, honey over all of it. My shrimp and grits...oh....my...Dog! the shrimp were cooked perfectly and sweet and had that perfect bite. The grits were insanely creamy with just the right amount of cheese that you got that stretch in your bite. It was topped with with an amazing pan sauce and I could have just sat in a corner with a bowl of it and a spoon and growled at anyone who came close to me. Our first visit and what a pleasant surprise. The clubby atmosphere is classic and relaxing. Polished wood, green velour cushions and a grown up vibe compliment the rather traditional American fare featured on the menu. We began with cocktails; nice pours and very reasonably priced! We chose the Brussels sprouts starter, blistered with a nice char and dressed with a velvety aioli. They were nutty, crunchy and absolutely delicious. The Cesar salad was authentic and they didn't skimp on the anchovies. We tried gambas, the traditional Spanish shrimp and garlic oil featuring small head on shrimp. With bread to soak up the sauce it made a nice light entree. The crispy duck breast was perfectly cooked medium rare and came with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and haricots verts. Wine by the glass was priced below what most restaurants today are charging. For dessert a molten chocolate torte was rich and satisfying. Service was wonderful. Scott, the manager, was on the floor and made us feel right at home. We will certainly be back. read more

A very mixed experience. We were seated at a table near the bar. It was incredibly load. So much so it was uncomfortable. There was an odd smell which was later determined to be some type of cleaning solution I had the Duck entree. It was decidedly okay. It wasn't bad. But kind of dry and flavorless. This place is EXCELLENT! My husband and I have patronized many restaurants in the region, often leaving, saying "meh." Salt and Fire is a breath of fresh air, finally a restaurant whose dish preparations match the prices. We shared the crostini trio with delightful savory and sweet flavors to start, all with seasonal ingredients. The roasted pork shoulder and filet mignon entrees were flavorful, well cooked with balanced flavor profiles. The cheesecake with red wine sauce was delightful. I was kind of annoyed that I was so full that I couldn't finish it! The service was attentive and detail oriented. We will be back soon! read more

It's just opened (rather, soft opened) so they're making certain everything's just right. No need to worry. Just finished the first of what I hope will be many exceptional meals to come. First, the place looks great, with a pair of inviting main indoor dining rooms, but there's also a breezy porch and (apparently) a rooftop as well. It was too hot to view the uppermost level but the lower, shaded porch was a winner. OK, now the food. Anyone anywhere near Saugerties must not miss the opportunity to savor the incredible triad of appetizer crostini. All original, different and imaginative heapings of goat cheese, prosciutto, honey, fig jam, pear and godknows what else, deliciously assorted, truly melded into a meal unto itself. I'd recommend sharing but how to decide which of the three to fight over. Entrees. I can never pass on crispy duck breast. Here actually served with confit (better) and crispy slices (less so) joined by haricot verte, mashed potatoes and sauce laden with cherries. My only reservation was that the (cooked medium) sliced breast was somewhat dry and tough. Perhaps ordered rare would improve this. Overall too delicious to carp. I'll definitely return. So many of the appetizers and entrees sounded amazing and based on this first experience I can't wait. read more
