I have been following Jeff ever since he began cutting my mom's hair when I was around 9 - I'm 24 now. He now does my mom's, my sister's, and my hair and though I live in New York, I don't let anyone else touch my hair - I just get my hair done four times a year when I'm back in Chicago! (not to mention that full highlights & cut are less than $200 here - you could NEVER find that in NYC!) Yes, Jeff is that good that he's worth going back to from the East Coast. He's coaxed my dark ash blonde hair into gorgeous sandy blonde via full highlights, and it looks soooo natural and good, never yellowy! Others who've tried to dye my hair blonde never get it right, either producing a strawberry blonde or yellow (when I tried to go full on platinum). The great thing about Jeff is he'll tell you what won't work for your hair. When I asked if he could make me all blonde he said "no" and I'm glad, because when I tried doing it elsewhere it looked awful! Also, he cuts my hair perfectly - there is nothing like getting a diagonal front from Jeff! Plus he is a lovely conversationalist - ask about his dalmatian :) Pejanie is an angel and so fun to talk to, and she gives the BEST headrub when she shampoos! Like heaven! I have gotten my hair highlighted and cut countless times, but never found anyone I felt like sticking with until I finally found my dream team at Salon Buzz! I go to Kelly for my blonde highlights and she hits it out of the park every time! She has a knack for knowing what you want even when you aren't verbalizing it properly. I've been coming to Salon Buzz for about 4 years now (hard to believe). Prior to coming here, I was bouncing around Chicago, trying to find a stylist and colorist that I liked enough to commit to. When my sister moved downtown, she found Lexie and Nora and from then on, my life would never be the same. Nora is a genius and a true artist when it comes to color. I've done everything from highlights to chocolate brown to copper red, and each time it looks absolutely incredible. I've been stopped on the street before and asked if my color is natural, because people are just so amazed but she also colors in a way that it looks completely organic. Hands down, Nora is the best colorist in the city of Chicago. And Lexie... forget Blowtique, forget Dry Bar, you've never had a blow out until you've had one by this girl. She literally has 5-7 round brushes in your hair at one time, and every time I go home with hair with insane volume, bounce and shine. She also does a great cut - she somehow cuts off my 1-2 inches of gross split ends and makes it look just as long, but healthier than ever! These girls did my hair for my wedding last year, and they are truly the "Dream Team". Nora helped me to get extensions and colored them METICULOUSLY to match my hair. Lexie styled my hair as well as my sister/MOH and my notoriously picky mother. All of us were beyond thrilled with our styles - people were requesting to take pictures of my sister's updo, it was so intricate. What's more, when we hit a snag in timing, Lexie helped out by taking an extra bridesmaid and helping another to fix a style she wasn't loving. I went to Salon Buzz about a week and a half ago to get my hair colored from Kay. I previously had gotten my hair colored (ombré style) from a little boutique salon on the north side of Chicago. I definitely was much lighter than I'm usually used to/lighter than I wanted to be. I contacted Kay hoping she would be able to get me to the balayage color I wanted to be at for Fall/winter. I was able to get an appointment right away. The salon itself is under some renovations but it seems to be almost done and it looks beautiful! It is in the heart of river north where finding parking can be difficult but the service and results are definitely worth it! Kay was very personable and made my appointment very comfortable! She listened to what I was envisioning for my hair and I could not be any happier! In one sitting she made my TOO light that it looked damaged hair to a warm melted balayage and most importantly my hair looks healthy again! The blonde that was previously in my hair is pretty much completely gone and she did a wonderful job blending everything in. I get tons and tons of compliments now! Aside from my friends, there are a few things I still yearn for in Chicago: The lake, The Summers, Core Fusion Classes, Shopping on Oak Street and Salon Buzz. There are many other things but Salon Buzz is at the top of my list. I have very fine straight hair. I spent about 3 years looking for the right person to cut my hair and finally found Dina through a friend. She was the first person to ever recommend I try to go long and that I say goodbye to my highlights and go dark (how could you not love that). Thanks to Dina I have very cute shoulder length hair. And as a result I will recommend Dina to anyone who even mentions she needs a hair cut. Aside from being excellent at her craft Dina is also a true joy to sit with. She's professional, she can talk about anything and most of all she's real. I'm not the hippest of folks, but with Dina I feel like I'm cool. Salon Buzz is pricey, but it's worth it to me because I spend less on blow outs and also spend less time agonizing whether or not my hair looks good. Aside from Dina, I love all the colorists, and I have gotten great blow outs from everyone I have seen. The desk staff is great, very helpful with products and they remind you about your appointments. The only negative I could say about the place are the sometimes snooty Gold Coast/North Shore clientele, but how can I complain if I go to the Gold Coast to get my hair done. . . read more

THE BEST SALON IN THE CITY!!!! By far! I have been many times over the past 6 years and have always walked out happy. I have never had a bad experience. Sherri colors my hair and Ariel cuts it. They are pricy but it is worth it. No one has been able to do my hair as well my whole life. I recently got hair extensions at another salon they did a great job putting them in however they almost ruined my hair when they took them out. I really thought I was going to have to cut all my hair off. Until I called Ariel who refered me to Timothy he is the extension genius at Salon buzz. He worked nothing short of a miracle on my hair I had tons of glue and matting in my hair and he got it out in an hour and a half. I had tears in my eyes because the other salon that took them out told me that there was nothing that could be done and I would have to live with it or cut my hair. They are worth every penny Sherri is amazing she may be more expensive but she does such a good job with blending the highlights that as it grows it looks great and you don't have to go back as often. Ariel can take any bad hair cut and fix it she is also great at teaching you realistic ways to style your hair when you get home. A+++ They where on Oprah need I say more??? read more

There is no other place in Chicago to get you hair done other than Salon Buzz!! It's the BEST!! My colorist Scott is just brillant!! He cares about my hair and does not want to damage it! The color is always beautiful! Every now and then I want to change things up and his advice on what to do is always spot on!! And he is so genuine...gosh it's so refreshing!! The only reason I am giving this place 1 star is because the man who cut my hair, Paul and the man who fixed my hair, Scott were great. Otherwise this place is a total joke. I had a color consult with Erica while I got my hair cut. She seemed to listen and was sweet so I booked an appt with her. I brought photos for examples and had more conversations about what I wanted as we went. Whoever was in charge of washing my hair was awful! She was so rough. I was literally flinching. She had lathered up so much shampoo on my face there was a color water mark around my entire face. Not hair line Face! The base color was wrong and not even. I wanted a warm dark brown. What I got was black roots and murky in even brown ends. So they "fixed" it but really just made every thing black. Then the highlights that were supposed to be few and brushed in to look sun kissed,were chunky striped brass highlights from root to tip ALLover. I started to cry it looks so bad and not even close to what I wanted. Pulse the contrast of the black to brass was an eyesore. I told Erica all this and she just said I should live with it for a few days and if I didn't like it come back. To which I replied I didn't like it and didn't want to live with it.. she told me I would get used to it! I had to blow dry my own hair, a practice that seems to be the salons policy so know that going in. I got dirty brushes with other people's hair a crap round brush and a chair covered in other people's hair. Everywhere I went in this place it was dirty. Each station had someone else's cut ends still on the floor, dye on the neck rest of the sinks water splashed all over the seats.. it's a train wreck. I booked an appt to fix the 90s icky streaks before I left fighting back tears at the desk while everyone else just looked on. Then the day of my appt I am called and told she is coming in today!!! I kept my time and booked with a man named Scott who was very nice and could see the issues with my hair. We weren't able to get it to what I wanted. The damage was already done. But he made it I could at least look at myself in the mirror and not cringe. I'll go back to see him and Paul but I pray they get some new staff who k ow how to clean up after themselves and their area, who won't leave you with watermarks and a headache after your wash and someone who will blow dry your hair I spend over $300 and hours and hours of time in this place. read more

Salon Buzz River North is by far the best salon in the city. Duc is the best stylist there. I've been going to him for about 9 months by recommendation from a friend who has been going to Duc for 9 years. He has given me one fabulous haircut after the next. He is so thorough and has an amazing instinct for what will look best. The salon itself if warm and the staff is welcoming. They use the best hair products, including Kerastase, Bumble and bumble, and Shu Uemura. While it can be a little pricey, it's worth it to know that you will always leave looking fantastic. read more

I have been seeing Jackie Duran for a couple of years and she is the best stylist I know. Her haircuts are great. She listens and gets it right every time. Bonus points for being really fun to talk to. The salon is ok with tons of stations, an island for the colorists, a mani-pedi room, and lots of stations for stylists (they've grown). I am a very picky person when it comes to who I let cut my hair. I went in for just a bang trim for someone to fix my bangs as the person who I originally tried did a really bad job. The front desk gave me Tricia. Immediately within the 5 minute bang trim, I could see she knew what she was doing and how to cut hair! I booked right away and came back for my haircut which was absolutely AWESOME! I have super thick wavy hair and she texturized it and thinned it out for me. To top it off, I had a wedding to go to and I came in for a blow dry and she did an awesome retro wave/curl for my hair! I LOVED it and got so many compliments for it. Sadly I won't be back. Lindsay did an amazing job, great natural highlights, genuinely a talented girl with a very pleasant personality. Haircut with Victoria Juarez was another story. First, the woman has a cardboard personality and needs a major attitude adjustment if she wants to work with the general public. I used to work as a flight attendant for a bit so I know a little something about that I'd like to think. My mistake was that I forgot who I went to last time for a cut (and it's been years) so I said whoever is a available scheduling wise since my haircut is very simple. The salon offered Victoria. Apparently, she doesn't feel the need for common courtesy which includes a proper hello and a nice to meet you. She mumbled something and says to me what do I want. I showed her a photo (simple blunt bob) to which her response was a blank stare. It was like talking to a brick wall. No comprehension, no reaction, dead eyes. She proceeded to cut my hair without a word. This is what getting hair cut in prison must feel like. Didn't even ask how short. Just starts cutting. By then I ws just wondering if she knows what she's doing. Then she starts to blow dry it and parts it some weird way so I have to tell her um I part the other way. She sighs. So all she did was bark orders,look down look left look right. I won't even go into the eye roll when I asked if she could not use the flat iron (don't like my hair laying completely flat plus I have thin hair so not necessary) or the fact that she actually took the smock off before she was done cutting so that the hair did get into onto my clothes. She was very unhappy to have to put it back on me. Too weird to even write about. The whole scene could have been an SNL sketch. Im one of those people who will travel far to get hair done but I won't travel all the way from suburbs for great highlights and a mediocre cut that was basically just a trim for 75 bucks and included bad customer service and is not even what I wanted. I'm sure I can find another place where every employee is a grown up and acts in a professional manner, not some weird hostile passive-aggressive bs. read more

So disappointed...I get that it's a school and I'm getting a great price to have my hair done. However, when the salon calls to reschedule, messed up my day, I rearrange and then I show up for the rescheduled appointment and they say it's for a cut, not color, you'd think they would make some effort to make it right. Does this salon have idiots working for them? Only after I asked to speak with a manager did that happen. So, to their credit, they found someone to do my color, but I'm so aggravated. I need to acknowledge after many, many years how incredible my colorist Lyndsey is at Salon Buzz! I have never had my highlights done more professionally or accurately as when she does them. Lyndsey has a keen eye to what will work and how to get the perfect blond shade. She always makes my hair look natural and gets right to the root every time so you don't see outgrowth for a long time. (very hard to find other colorists that will get as close) I've been getting my highlights done for 15 years and no one is better than Lyndsey! I 1st came to Salon Buzz for the student color, I figured I'd give it a try-Had a guy named John do my hair, went to him twice-Each time he was rushing like he had to be somewhere and kind of scared me with how frantic he was-The results weren't that good, so I decided I'd try a pro colorist and got an appt with Sherri- Now the day I was supposed to see Sherri I got a call saying she was out sick, I really wanted my hair done and asked if anyone was like her and I was told Tara was and she could do the job- I was at a light brown with dark blonde highlights and I wanted more highlights, but not tiger orange, a nice buttery blonde with no orange tones- Tara got my request and whipped up the bleach for my hair, and when all was done and after my blow out I sat in the mirror wondering what was done to my hair b/c I had no highlights at all, my hair was darker than when I walked in-I brought up the topic and she said she'd re-do it, but she did it so fast and pissy and I ended up with stripes, like a 10 year old did it! And for a cut and highlights it cost me $221 I was very upset and 2 days later called Sherri, she said to come in a week and she'd take a look at it-She agreed the streaks were bad and not a great job done so fixed the bad color job, made it look better...but after I had to pay another $200!!!!! That is what made me stop coming here, she admitted Tara had done a bad job but didn't fix my hair for free or for a discounted price- I don't like the crammed area where color is done and you have to pay for a blow out if you don't want to walk around Chicago with wet hair, I'm sorry but if I'm paying over $200 for highlights a blow out should be included at this place, it's not that good or amazing- read more

Jamie @ Salon Buzz is amazing! I had previously been to a different salon and had my hair color & highlighted. I wasn't happy with either; the highlights were streaky like a zebra and pieces were chunky, orange, and yellow. She asked me to give it a week and the blonde I hadn't exactly ask for began to grow on me but I wanted it to look more natural. I made the mistake of going back to her to fix it; big mistake, HUGE! My hair turned penny color red highlights and became splotchy throughout. I was very upset and decided to Yelp for help! Thanks to some very trusty reviews I found Jamie @ Salon Buzz. Let me just say, my whole experience from beginning to end was perfect! The receptionist who answered my call (sorry I forgot her name) was great and told me that Jamie could actually squeeze me in an hour from my call. Seem to be fate! I was jumping for joy and hopped over. I was greeted and guided to Jamie's chair where she took a ton of time to ask me questions, show me photos, clarify exactly what I liked and didn't like about the existing hair. She also asked me to tell her exactly what was done before. She asked me what would I like to see my hair look like. She was AMAZING! My hair, while not thick, I have a lot of it and it's long too. She was easy to talk to and from the moment I met her I felt like I was in good hands. I had been to many many stylist and none could seem to understand just brown with highlights; sun-kissed, I think is how she put it .and it's exactly what I had wanted. Salon Buzz (Superior St.) has been BY FAR the best salon I've ever experience. First, let me begin with my colorist, Kay. I've seen her twice already and she never disappoints!! The attention to detail and time she takes to do my balayage really shows! She always achieves the color I want... AND SOME. The amount of compliments I get on my hair is out of this world, so GO SEE KAY. Secondly, Jordan does my cut... and she's also the BEST! Before coming to Salon Buzz, my hair was very dry and did not have much style. Now, thanks to Jordan I'm rocking the middle part with TONS of volume. Ohh, you want to save me $80? I'm listening ... On top of that, instead of unnecessarily coloring the entire strand of my hair -- leading to damaged ends -- he worked what was needed. This is by far the worst salon i have ever visited! They are so unprofessional and do not care about customer service AT ALL! Their only concern is putting cash in their pockets. DO NOT COME HERE. I came in to get extensions with Tom, on recommendation of the front desk. Upon coming for a consultation tom was well aware of my hair texture and color but behold that upon installing my extensions a few days later the color match was completely off !! I have curly hair and he had even initially told me that he doesn't need to curl the extensions!! He was so unprepared for the job that he had to curl the extensions on the day of the appointment. Why would a professional stylist tell me that my extensions don't need to be curled when my hair is naturally curly?? Long story short, he had to chop off some length from the pricey extensions to make the hair blend. I was still unsatisfied as it just looked like 2 different hairs and my head looked multi colored. I returned for a solution and i asked them to color my extensions to match my real hair. Of course they couldn't do it and i don't know what cheap quality extensions they use which wouldn't even color properly. They wanted to charge me for the coloring service after having messed up themselves!! And of course the stylist ran to me after to sign a consent form stating that I won't blame them for any damage to the extensions. My hair turned out so bad that I asked for the extensions to be removed!! It's been one week and I'm still trying to get a refund for their service. I can't say enough that they have terrible service here. This is not a court case!!! I don't know what keeps these people and the manager so busy that they can't call an unhappy client after one week!!! RIDICULOUS!!! read more
