I was in town from Arizona and was convinced to get a hair cut at the last minute. After calling half the salons in the Gold Coast and River north Gaby had an opening, I had a family member who previously had went to the Gold Coast location for years. I had been growing my hair out for a year after previously having a blonde bob . Gaby was so nice and gave me the chop I needed. The salon itself is really upscale and clean, very professional. I visited for a consultation before getting extensions and color. I was quoted $1,600 and specifically asked if that was the maximum price. The stylist checked with Sam, the extension specialist, who confirmed that was the max. Based on this, I paid an $800 deposit and ordered 5 packs of 22-inch Bellami hair. After second-guessing my color choice, Sam ordered 3 other shades, but failed to tell me that one of those was only available in 24-inch extensions which are more expensive. On the day of my appointment, I had to ask to see the extensions before they were colored and installed. They showed me three colors outside the packaging, but still didn't tell me some were 24 inches. Since they were all light shades,I went with a custom color instead. Despite having already told them I never use box dye, the colorist asked again and I explained I only use professional dye, and even listed the levels and developer. Yet, she still messed up my color three times: 1. I ended up with bright orange roots and dark red/brown hair 2. She tried to fix an uneven patch, but my roots were still orange. 3.The assistant suggested they could just install the extensions first and fix the color after which is completely unacceptable because you cannot wet K-tip extensions immediately after installation. I had to explain this to a professional. After this, the colorist made my roots dark brown, which was not the all over even color I wanted at all. After 4.5-5 hours of color, Sam suggested not installing all of my extensions, despite me telling her I liked my previous extension applications with all of them in. I kept saying the hair felt too thin in places, particularly around my face, but she still rushed through the application and mentioned her boyfriend's parents were cooking dinner so i felt bad keeping here there as it was almost 9. At checkout, I was told I owed an additional $1,280, bringing my total to $2,080,which was $480 more than the quoted price. They never informed me during the service that things were being added on nor did I know 24 inch hair was being added to my hair for more money without my consent. When I checked my receipt, I found that they charged me for extensions I never ordered and for more than I could buy them for online myself, even though they get a professional discount. I messaged Sam to express my dissatisfaction with the uneven color and thin extensions around my face. The next day, I called the salon, and the manager (blonde with an accent) was extremely rude, accusing me of using box dye, even though I had explicitly told them I had not. After several exchanges, she admitted that they had put 24-inch hair in my head without informing me and charged me for it. When I asked why they couldn't just color 5 packs for 22inch if they did 3 and she had no answer. They only refunded me $170 after I had spent $2,000. $75 for the unquoted root glaze, 40 color that i have to get redone anyways, and $50 for the 22-inch vs. 24-inch price difference. They even called me a scammer during the call. when they added things without consent. I've been to Salon Buzz for years and never checked my receipts, trusting them. I left with uneven color, thin extensions bc i have them at 2 different lengths. and had to cut my own hair at home because the ends were straggly. I went in for a hair color/cut. The hair dye looks like it was done by a non professional. The skin to my forehead, ears under my neck all had hair dye stains. I went out to eat afterwards not realizing I was walking around with all these stains. This morning I noticed all these mistakes and only to come to the realization, I have no layers to my hair! I tried rescheduling with someone else for the haircut but would be stuck paying another ninety five dollars on top of the two fifty I already paid yesterday. I would not have to pay if i go back to the same stylist but I don't want the same person touching my hair again. This place is not worth the money for such rotten service. How can we do a 0 star review??? I got my hair cut last week by Phillip Terriquez at Salon Buzz Gold Coast and this is what I went home with! He hid it well with some curls (must have known he made a mistake) but when I went home from the salon and flat ironed my hair- this is what I saw! I am APALLED and mortified.  I know my hair will take 1+ years to get to the point where this will even be able to be attempted to be fixed. Check out the left side- half my hair is CHOPPED.  the right and left are UNEVEN and nothing is blended whatsoever.  It looks like a 5 year old took kid scissors to my head and charged me $85 for it. worst part of it all was Phil ghosted me when I showed this to him, and I had such a hard time getting a manager to finally call me to try to make things right.  Well, once I got a hold of her after many messages, she basically said it was my fault for not noticing it sooner and could not offer any way to fix it. she offered NO apology or remorse and said if I were to even think about posting a review (she brought this up first), she would lie and say she refunded me and tried to fix it- and then she would get my review taken down. I first reached out to Phil and also the salon to try to avoid having to blast them like this as its not my style- but when I got no response or even an apology, I posted this review. save yourself and do NOT go to this salon and especially NOT Phil.  I think the only hair practice he got was cutting his barbie's hair when he was a kid??? I've already had 30 responses to my instagram post about this, friends all appalled and offering other recommendations for different salons eager to fix this mess if possible.   but I want to save the rest of you.  DO NOT GO HERE!!! you will leave mortified and in tears. read more

I had a horrible experience at Salon buzz today. I came in for a haircut and left with uneven hair. Sam was my stylist and she immediately upsold me a conditioning treatment-- which would have been fine but she neglected to let me know that she would not have enough time to give me a proper haircut! She cut my hair so fast and aggressively I immediately became concerned. I think she made 3 snips and then she started blow drying my hair immediately making me extremely confused because I paid for a whole haircut not just for my ends to be dusted in 2 seconds. The whole process was so rushed I felt like it was a stressful experience and they treated me like a transaction on an assembly line. If this was because of the unexpected conditioning treatment they offered me, they should have told me that the haircut would be rushed or scheduled the conditioning for another time! After she sent me to pay, I checked in the bathroom and found my hair in the front to be UNEVEN. so i told the front desk politely that my hair appeared uneven and the appointment felt super rushed. the front desk lady was dismissive of my complaint by saying "well Sam is really good" which felt dismissive because I had uneven hair. I asked for it to be fixed and requested someone else to fix it because Sam rushing with my hair made me feel super uncomfortable. The desk lady told me I would be charged for an entirely new haircut in addition to this haircut which is a completely unprofessional response from a high end salon! I felt like the customer service and cut was equivalent to Supercuts, and so you might as well just go there ans save your money for an equivalent cut! I had a good experience in the past with someone else and so I'm just really sad bc even after they sent me back to sam to have her fix it.. it's STILL UNEVEN. I just want even hair and for this business to be more polite! :( I trusted Salon Buzz after being referred to them by a close friend, but now I definitely don't want them to touch my hair anymore, and a refund sounds fair considering I need to get this fixed still! Would not recommend. I had grown out most of my layers, went to see Andreas for a dusting, trim and a blunt cut. No blunt cut and no dusting. He decided to add some dimension to my hair and now I have short layers at the top of my head I had spent the last two years growing out and he decided to add point cutting to the ends to add dimension. I wanted a straight blunt cut. I showed him a picture. The layers he added don't blend in with anything. He said it's not layers it's texturizing. Whatever it is, it's a mess! Your response is not true. The only layers I had left were long layers near my face. You added these to the top of my hair. I'll include a picture of the bottom which was one length, you butchered and made uneven. read more

I've been going to Salon Buzz for years. I see Wendy for color and Andreas for cuts and they both are incredibly talented. Wendy is hands down THE best colorist in the city , while Andreas is truly beyond gifted and is the best at what he does. My hair has never been healthier and is the perfect shade of blonde for my skin type thanks to Wendy's perfectionism and attention to detail. I have also been able to keep my hair long and healthy thanks to amazing cuts from Andreas. I just went there last night to get a much needed cut. I went to the training program so one of the students (who have already graduated beauty school but are training to work specifically at the particular salon) cut my hair. Her name was Cameron and she was fabulous! I got a "bumble & bumble long layer cut" which I have never seen before but I loved it because it made the layers so blended and soft. I have super long (mid back) hair and instead of being long and straggly, its fabulous now. The salon itself is very nice too, very clean and friendly staff. I would definitely go back. Cameron does hair on Tuesdays at 5:30pm and 6:45pm if you need a cut or a trim for only $20! read more

I love Salon Buzz. After having a horrible experience with my previous stylist at a different salon who had botched my color, I booked Salon Buzz on a whim before a trip to France in May of 2017. I was going to the Cannes Film Festival and needed my hair color corrected. The stylists and colorists worked so hard to correct the color and my extensions leaving my hair gorgeous! After this, I was hooked! I've been seeing Rachel religiously for my color. Seriously, she's amazing she listens to every concern I have and keeps my balayage vibrant. I trust every color choice she's made, she has always transitioned my color beautifully. She's always fun to chat with and makes the time in the chair go faster. I tell all of my friends about her and refer them to Salon Buzz! I love that Salon Buzz uses Kerastase, Bumble and Bumble, and also offer Mason Pearson brushes for purchase. They also have a great customer appreciation sale every few months for products and occasionally will have freebies and goodie bags. Definitely my favorite salon! read more

I had a gift certificate to use here so I wanted to think of something super awesome to have done, something totally unique. I had bleached blonde hair (my natural color is a dark brown) with a side shave and decided I was going to let my roots grow out, bring them down a bit more, then fade into silver then to a blue color at the ends. Like an avant garde ombre. A friend recommended I talk to Judi who recommended that I see Lyndsey since she is a colorist who specialized in stuff that was a little less common. So, I booked a consultation and talked to Lyndsey for about 10-15 mins. I showed her a photo of what I wanted and she walked me through the steps it would take to get the desired look. It ended up taking my lunch hour on a Friday and a few hours on Saturday but it's complete and my hair looks awesome! It was funny because I feel like this salon specializes in a lot of "safer" looks so as I was blow drying my hair I kept getting a lot of stares, but I didn't mind. You know you can find a good salon when they can do crazy cuts and colors just as well as blonde highlights or a nice trim. Overall, Lyndsey was completely rad, super talented, and a total perfectionist and it showed as I left on Saturday. This place is not cheap by any means, but I would highly recommend it! read more

I have come multiple times to the River North Location, and every time I come in I ask myself why. My hair stylist is great but the receptionist at the front desk is awful. Never once do they smile, welcome you to the Salon. It always feels as if I am bothering, interrupting them. Came here a few times for student color and cut. My hair is super high maintenance so I'm back in the chair for color every 3-4 weeks because my hair grows so fast. Needless to say I needed to find something more economical than $60+ for color. the first time I came for color it was excellent- they actually corrected my hair and made sure that the existing highlights blended naturally. Cons: you don't necessarily see the same stylist or colorist every time due to limited availability of appts Also you dry your hair yourself at the drying station. I can't complain too much because the student rates are a steal in the city and the color stays better than Aveda color. read more

I've been highlighting my hair blonde for years and never has a salon damaged my hair more and handled the customer experience worst than Salon Buzz. I came here a few months ago per the recommendation of some friends (who have since taken their business elsewhere due to bad experiences themselves) and was recommended o Jordan for haircuts. At my consult appointment, I told her my hair was to get it healthy again and to grow it out but having not colored my hair in a while asked if she thought I could continue highlighting it blonde and she said yes the hair will stay healthy. I asked her for a recommendation for blonde coloring and she pointed me to Erica. While I was liking my cuts with Jordan (very basic trims and cleaning up layers) my color was never really the ash blonde I had wanted and pointed to several pictures. Each time with Erica I always ended up going back to get it "corrected". It was an improvement but never quite there. I didn't want to be a high maintenance customer and gave Erica the benefit of the doubt since I was a new client she was still trying to get to know. A few weeks ago, I got highlights and a few days later I wanted to check the back of my head and that's when I noticed a section of my hair where the bottom 3-4 inches was completely gone! Upon further inspection, I noticed several other spots where the hair was completely damaged and broken off mid strand. (I've added photos to the salons page on yelp) Devastated and in shock, I met with the manager Tom which coincidentally was when I had a haircut scheduled to hopefully find a solution. The best he did was offer up their $40 "treatment" for free. The haircut I still had to pay for. I asked for a refund on some of my previous services given that I had invested at this point well over $2000 in products and services and had never really been happy and now chunks of my hair were missing. He said he couldn't because I didn't let him know sooner. While I absolutely appreciate salons putting in refund policies where you only get a certain time to let them know, this was the salons clear decision to not even try to make it right or compromise. I continue to hear this salon is just growing to be too pretentious when the service isn't even that great. I share this in the hopes that someone else can avoid having the experience I had here and with the caution that if a stylist thinks they may be compromising the health of your hair with services, they will choose to take your money over the long term satisfaction and loyalty of a client. read more

I've been coming to Salon Buzz for a LONG time - probably over 8 years. My color technician is Christina and my stylist is Gabby. They are both awesome. My husband gets his hair cut from Gabby now, too (when we make it to Chicago). We now commute from Indiana for our haircuts. :) Gabby and Christina did my hair for my wedding and did an amazing job. My hair was healthy and shiny (and all the gray was masked) and the style was really pretty - away from my face, but still down. It even lasted through dancing and photos after the ceremony - in pretty high wind. I couldn't have been happier. I recommend these two for haircuts and color AND special occasion styling. read more

I've been going to Salon Buzz for a year. Collin does my color and not only is she extremely professional, knowledge and attentive but she's also very caring. She level sets my expectations and never does anything that will damage my hair. She realizes that the long term health and condition of my hair is more important than just providing a service - if it's going to damage my hair, it's out. She is an absolute sweetheart and I always look forward to my time there. Also, my color is freakin fabulous and I'm ALWAYS complemented on it. Col is magic with color. Sophia cuts and styles me so after Collin perfects my color Sophia cuts me and styles to perfection. I echo the same praise that I gave Collin for Soph - professional, knowledge and attentive. Ok, I have next in my life experienced something like I did here. It was actually comical. I walked into the salon, happy and excited to get my much needed color done. I was told they did a good job. And they were close to my home so it was perfect.. Perfect until their staff started talking. I have a service dog. She comes everywhere with me. I have the card and certificate for her service dog status. Before they even said hello, they told me dogs weren't allowed. I pulled out her service dog papers and showed them to the front desk staff. They looked at me side eyed and I sat down. Not a very attractive quality for a business to not be dog friendly. But that wasn't where it ended. I was introduced to my colorist, Collin. She was a nice girl. We sat down to talk about the color. She put her fingers in my hair and realized that I have hair extensions. I told the staff I had extensions when I booked the appt. .. she then asked me 'do you want the color around the bonds?' I looked at her.. I don't really know. I didn't go to beauty school. How am I supposed to know how to do color.. smh. She told me she was going to mix the color and walked away. A few minutes later, Piper walks up and says, ' Collin doesn't feel comfortable doing your hair due to liability reasons... wha? Liability? She told me a more experienced colorist, Kelly who has hair extensions and may be able to do my hair. I just looked at her. I mean, first off, why did Collin say she was going to go mix my color if she had no intention of returning and doing my hair? Secondly, how in GODS name is it 2017 and these girls don't know how to work with hair extensions. Lol. Is this even a hair salon? Do these people have their beauty licenses? Where am I.. lol. I decided to just cut my losses and left. I can only imagine what a disaster my hair would've been if I decided to have a timid, nervous stylist coloring my hair .. unbelievable. Maybe this salon is ok with the basics. But if you have extensions, or need anything special done with your hair, this is not the place. Horrible Salon. read more

I had high hopes as a new customer. I have thick coarse hair. I brought a few pictures in and told Alissa what the challenges of my hair are- like a thick fast growing back. I wanted a messy pixie look. She acted like she was listening to me, but she was not. I did not look like a pixie when I left, but I hoped I could get the messy pixie after I shampooed it myself - but no. After 3 weeks I am cutting the thickness out of the back. read more

Salon Buzz accommodated us as walk-ins - they matched us with an entry level stylist, Brittany for my 14-year-old son who has very curly hair. The problem we tend to have is that stylists make him look military by just putting a formula cut on his head. I asked her to work with his curls. She did such a great job. The cut was $50 (entry level for them, expensive for a kid) but he left looking really sharp, really elegant. The only complaint I have is that neither Salon Buzz allows you put tips on credit cards. If you don't have cash you need to walk to the ATM. After spending as much as Salon Buzz costs (I've gone to the other location for highlights many times and it was worth the trip....) this seems unreasonable. I know credit card fees are a horror, but for such expensive salons, it's kind of lame to inconvenience the customers just so the stylists can get tipped. I think businesses that do this are kind of full of themselves. They need to remember the customer is king / queen. Not the management. read more

I've been seeing Aracely (cut) and Nadia (color) for over 7 years. I stumbled upon the salon when I lived in Chicago the first time, and even after moving to Washington DC I would fly back to see these ladies. They figured out a way to make my cut and color last longer between trips. When it was time to move back to Chicago, they were definitely people I look forward to seeing more often. There has never been a time my hair was anything but absolutely amazing. I always get compliments on my cut and color. I didn't have a good coloring experience at the other salon buzz location. So the manager referred me to Sheri from this location and I'm so glad she did! My experience with Sheri was absolutely delightful. My hair was beautiful after she was done and I just appreciated how detail oriented she was. She took her time and made me feel like she was going to give me the results I was looking for or as close as she can get. I would definitely go back to see Sheri and highly recommend her. read more
