My hubby comes here every 6 months or so to get a perm and cut and Al does a phenomenal job every time! His hair is very thick and hard to manage especially when it gets long so getting a perm really helps keep it manageable. It usually takes about 2 hours total and he always feels relaxed after. I just wanted a curtain bang. Why is it so hard to find a hair salon in US that actually knows how to cut hair. I went to China, Canada, Mexico and just popped into random salon and have beautiful haircut and every time. As soon as he started cutting I know he didn't know how to cut a curtain bang. I had been going to the same trusty hairdresser for over 10 years and wanted to try something new, hence my visit to Volar for a balayage and cut. I appreciated Al's transparency about costs for service and taking the time to understand my vision in terms of cut length and color. He was thorough in explaining everything he was going to do. The cut was decent, similar to layered styles I've gotten previously. The color was nice, although at $300 for a partial balayage (he only highlighted some of my hair and kept much of it my natural black), very pricey compared to the usual $200-250 I pay for a full balayage. His assistants were kind of slow and my wash was painful - for some reason my hair was getting yanked left and right and the wash was the antithesis of relaxation. Although Al did ask for permission to take videos of my haircut/color process, I did not expect him to keep me for an extra 10-15 minutes afterward to shoot content. I would not come back for the price point ($355 total for partial balayage and color) as I can get similar cut and color with my usual stylist for $100 cheaper, although overall I am satisfied with the cut and color. If the cost were reduced and experience improves in the future, I might consider revisiting. read more

I am very happy with the result and I was expecting to be charged more but wasn't. If you bring cash, they give you 10% off. The inside is pretty professional and busy. Don't expect Al to be doing your hair the whole time because he is busy but his assistant was very careful and did a good job as well. I recently got my hair done and it was not what I wanted. I asked for brown highlights and I got blonde highlights.... also I told them I had an allergic reaction when I dyed my hair with box dye and I don't want dye touching my scalp. after the highlights were being dyed onto my hair the stylist puts dye onto my scalp and toner.... I was so upset. I should have asked for a refund. now my scalp is also very itchy and I ended up in urgent care. I think the chemicals from the dye and toner caused a bad reaction to my scalp, which lead to me having contact dermatitis... i wish they did a patch test to see if I would have an allergic reaction. My scalp was also not washed well... I have stains on my scalp of the dye. read more

Volar is my new go-to place for hair cuts, custom colors, and balayage. I wanted to go from from a level 4 (chocolate brown) color to a purple/lavender/pink balayage that would still look professional on Zoom. The photos uploaded from the salon show strong purple tone, and on Zoom my hair looks like a beautiful ash blonde. Al cut and dyed my hair and I am 100000% satisfied. Al even helped me take photos at the salon with a ring light to show the true color. If you're looking for custom colors and/or have asian hair, I highly recommend Volar salon. Al explained every step of the process to me. As a hair-dyeing veteran who does a lot of research, Al really knew more than I did. Volar is the only salon in Chinatown I know of that includes the olaplex treatment, which is very helpful in hair health. I wish other places would add olaplex for extreme lightening, since it is so beneficial. In terms of cost - my hair dye ran around $270 (I don't recall the exact number) which is a little bit more than other places in Chicago Chinatown. However, this is significantly less than what I used to pay in NYC and I could not be happier. The total cost included long hair cut, balayage bleach, Olaplex treatment, dye, and final styling. My final hair was worth the cost I. Please go to Volar - you will NOT be dissapointed. My hair came out so soft and beautiful. I had compliments for days from random people. Volar was very responsive and set realistic expectations when I made my appointment. They let me know it would likely take 5/6 hours and I should plan ahead for the appointment. In my 6 hour appointment at Volar, I saw at last 4 other girls come and go with great color transformations. The salon is very clean. There are constant music videos streaming from a large screen as well as local small screens. It's also conveniently located next to one of the best bakeries in Chinatown, so that was an added plus! JAY was so diligent from the beginning and clearly explain why we couldn't achieve the platinum silver I had originally requested. When I asked him if I should come back in two month for a touch up, he advise that I should let my hair rest and come back in four month. Now that's tricky someone that's passionate about his job and not just trying to make money off their client. I would like to thank Al for cutting and highlighting my hair on 1/14/2022. I made an appointment the previous day and the appointment started promptly when my friend and I arrived. Originally I had wanted to just do a cut but then I asked if I can get a highlight and it was very kind of them to squeeze me into their bustling schedule. During the process, Al was very considerate and explained every step of the way. Before I sat down, he informed me that it would take approximately 4 hours to achieve the highlights that I wanted. After I sat down, he saw that I had a backpack and offered a locker for storage. Then he explained the process for the highlights which required bleaching first and then coloring next. He did the cutting and his apprentice did the coloring under his guidance. For the cut, Al was very thoughtful and trimmed my bangs so that it can part from either side. At the end of the cut, he double checked to ensure that nothing was missed. The highlights are beautiful in terms of color, depth, balance, and vibrance. I will let photo speak for itself. I thought I'd try Volar out after frequenting Headquarter Salon, primarily because Headquarter was getting too dirty for my taste (hair everywhere). But unfortunately, I was disappointed to see that Volar was the same in terms of cleanliness. In terms of the hair color & cut itself, I would say that I'm pretty happy with the outcome and Al gave me pretty much what I asked for. The hair wash, however, was really rough, painful, and uncomfortable. It was $198 including $30 tip for color and cut with a 10% cash discount. What's my verdict? I would say that if you care about price, then Headquarter is marginally cheaper by a few dollars. Otherwise service, wait time, and cleanliness is about the same between the two. In terms of skill: - for color, I would argue that Headquarter is marginally better (in terms of my experience with Norris and Ivan) - for cut, I would say Volar (with Al) is abit more detailed & nuanced. For example, I asked for curtain bangs. He cut abit more to frame my face better, and also gave me more layers at the back for more volume read more

Many barbers like to ignore what I say and cut my hair based on what's best for me, which ends up being too short for my liking and I just tie it up for a couple weeks. I got a perm here recently and I love it very much! My appointment was with Al at 11 am and I left at around 3:30 pm. It was a long process but I love the results. Al was very nice; my only complaint is that I wasn't told what was happening at each step so sometimes I was a bit confused. The price was also much more than I expected because I have gotten perms at other salons in Chinatown and this one was more expensive, but I could have called to ask since their website was down. However, I am docking two stars because I feel like the stylist was intentionally unclear about the pricing with me, and because the process took a lot longer than it should. The stylist told me the service would be $120 at the start and then charged me $180 when finished and conveniently pulled out a service menu only when I questioned it at the end. He also did not let me use the yelp advertised 10% off discount because I wasn't paying in cash. i also had to wait a lot longer because he cut and styled two clients' hair while my color/toner set.
