I got a perm and even though I am waiting on the result, my stylist was really attentive and did not hurt or pull my hair too loud. He wiped my face with gentleness and was very professional. The shampoo lady was also gentle with my head and I really appreciate that. They were able to work with my last minute plans and all the other people left with beautiful hair. Located in Chinatown square, I usually grab a bite before or after my appointment. Norris had been fully booked the last two times I've stopped by, but I enjoyed my last service with Winston. We chatted in my broken Cantonese and he recommended a treatment given the hair issues I've been working through. I sat under a heating device for 13 min while my hair soaked in some magical serum/conditioner that made my hair feeling noticeably smoother. HeadQuarter isn't the most luxurious salon around but the prices are great, you leave feeling fresh, and there's something familiar about the hustle and bustle. Everytime I come back to Chicago, I get my haircut here. It's a new frills place, the price is right here, and they are efficient - barely any waiting around. It's not the cleanest salon just a heads up but there've been no issues. I got my haircut by Norris and typically, I've only been asking for face framing layers and a 1in trim so I'm out of there within an hour. You get a wash as well with your cut. The last time, I also opted for a keratin conditioning because my ends felt especially dead and 3 months later, I think it helped my hair stay healthy and grow. I recommend! read more

I usually get my hair cut with Norris. He was on vacation. The receptionist said she will make sure I get an excellent service. That did not happen. The hairstylist had multiple customers at the same time. He intermittently cut my hair. My hair is not equal length, and volume is different from left to right. There are shorter area everywhere. Norris is an incredible stylist, he really is a master of his craft. I'd recommend reserving ahead of time as his services are excellent. I've been going for about a year now every so often and to say that he's saved my hair on multiple occasions is an understatement. Everyone is very polite and professional, and quality is guaranteed every time. However my only gripe is that whenever I'm unable to make an appointment with Norris & decide to go with another stylist it can be genuinely hard to communicate with them. It pains me to leave a review on here because i've been going to the salon for probably almost 4 years and for the most part, they had been doing a good job but this past year, I've had really bad experiences and I think the one I had today is the last straw for me--I'm not coming back here anymore. Ever. I usually come pretty prepared whenever I go in for a haircut session and that usually means bringing two reference pictures for what I had in mind and talking through it. This past year though, even though I bring in my reference photos and talk through it with the hairstylist, alex, does not follow through, and tends to go way shorter than what I like and does it without testing the length with me--it's a drastic snip snip before I can even react or process it. Today I decided to give him one last shot and so I went in with a very particular reference photo and sat down on that chair and showed him the photo of the bangs and the length of the bangs that I wanted and specifically asked him I want it *exactly* the same length and style, just right above the brows, and not to go any shorter. He said yes and started cutting away. Lo and behold, he did it again and did not follow through on my specific request, opting to cut my bangs so short that it's now on par with my hairline. And again, cutting so drastically and so fast that I had no time to react fast enough and there is no feasible fix for this. I'm attaching the exact reference photo of the bangs and their botched interpretation of the request I made. I'd rather cut all my hair off than trust them to follow through with a haircut anymore. read more

I've been coming to headquarters for haircuts and balayange with Norris for years now. Recently I've moved away from Chicago but on a recent trip back I stopped in for a quick haircut. Norris was busy so I just got someone to trim my hair. Honestly the experience wasn't great as he cut my hair dry which was fine but trimmed it super quickly and didn't add in the layers I asked for. After the cut I had to ask for a wash and when he dried my hair he asked if I wanted it curled only to say it was an additional $7 after he started. The haircut was fine as I just wanted a trim but there wasn't much attention paid to the haircut and styling. I would give headquarters 4 stars overall based on the years I've been but definitely request someone who's well recommended if your have something specific you want. read more

Great experience overall; clean, well lit, and comfortable. I booked an appointment with Norris for the first time and he had gone beyond my expectations, from start to finish. Prior to coming here, I was in search for a new hairdresser and new hairstyle, as this salon is closer to my hometown compared to my old one. I felt a little worried at first because of the rocky mix of reviews left here, especially for men's haircuts -- but Norris didn't disappoint. First of all, the pricing: $31 without tip for a diligent haircut and in my case, two hair washes. You can't really beat the price, given the quality and service given at Headquarters Salon. Second, not only did Norris tend to the photo I had shown him as reference, but he was very detail driven, making sure he fulfilled my requests of layering for volume and in general, how I wanted the cut to look. Meticulously doing his work, he made sure everything was even and light, considering that I came with overgrown hair -- all while keeping up a lighthearted conversation that made the experience even more enjoyable. He even went 20 minutes past closing to ensure everything had set well before I left. Thanks for the haircut + the kindness! A well deserved 5/5 stars. I went in for a digital perm. I left with them telling me not to pay and sobbing. My hair is entirely fried to the point it is standing up on its own. I had some split ends before going in but the level of damage that they did to my hair had them feeling bad for me. Maybe it was because of my hair texture or other reasons but it seemed to me that the stylist was not proficient in the process at all. He was kind but it was really really bad. I haven't gotten my hair done professionally in years and this was my gift for finishing my semester. They did not even try to make me pay and told me they were sorry but don't perform chemical treatments on customers that you are not trained or good at. read more

I came in with a general idea of what I wanted for a haircut...and left with the perfect hairdo! I made a reservation in advance and came several minutes late but they took me in immediately when I arrived. They washed my hair (this is included in the haircut), and it felt like a mini head massage. It was not so rough and not so gentle--just right! My barber was Alex. He asked if I spoke Chinese (and I don't) right off the bat. He spoke English but generally wasn't chatty, and that was perfectly fine with me! When I get a haircut I actually prefer sitting in comfortable silence and that was exactly what happened. Alex told me my hair was dry (I was very aware of this already...1.5 years into the pandemic I had washed my hair WAY more than usual, AND in hot water...). He asked if I wanted hot oil treatment and I agreed. It felt nice and my hair is so much healthier looking! Probably took about 20-30 minutes for the treatment. Hot oil treatment costs about $75, but apparently is only $25 when you get color done too. I showed a picture of what I wanted for my cut and Alex asked me questions about it to make sure he understood what I wanted. Overall I would recommend him. With both the hot oil treatment and cut, it took about 1 hr and 20 minutes. A little longer than I expected but i didn't mind. Space: there are several seats available at a time for haircuts. It was generally clean and someone swept the floor every 10-15 minutes. The mirrors are large and the chairs are comfortable. Location: excellent! The salon is located in the Chinatown square plaza, where there is a TON of food around. Perfect place to get a haircut and then hang out to eat or grab some milk tea or pastries after! Parking: I parked across the street at the parking lot below the Chinatown-Cermak station. They usually have plenty of spots and you can get 2 hr parking validated. Covid: All the staff wear masks, but customers are not required to wear them. There is a sign on the door asking unvaccinated folks to keep masks on, and masks are optional for those who are vaccinated. Trim/Layer + Balayage x2 I spontaneously decided to get a balayage while I was visiting Chicago, after having natural virgin black hair for some time. Did not request for anyone as I was booking only 3-4 days in advance. Luckily, Alan had some availability. I worked with Alan who did my haircut and balayage. He seemed thoughtful in how to bleach, and made sure to check in regularly to make sure where it was at. Though, I picked the lightest copper/red color in the hair color book (9.34GC), I felt like it could be more red. I came back to Alan, and he was able to just do another round of coloring. Unpleasant experience- i went to the salon 4 times to get my hair colored and for corrections, to ultimately try to get my hair back to its natural color. I first went for a balayage. I wasn't happy with the results, so I asked them to redo. I wasn't really happy with it, so after about a month, I asked them to dye my hair back to my natural hair color, and it turned out SO unnatural. I went back and asked for a correction and it looked fine in the salon but now my hair is extremely bright red in the sunlight. Will not return and super super disappointed. read more

Horrible. I came for a haircut and they suggested a treatment to "hydrate" my hair, but they ended up burning it. I can feel my hair is burnt. Also, they were very rough when washing my hair. Not relaxing at all. Then I asked for some waves using a flat iron and all I got was a half-wavy blow-dry, and on top of that, it wasn't even completely dry. My roots were left frizzy and not properly dried. If they're in such a rush, it would be better if they just didn't offer the service.
