Jason is a very underrated hair stylist at this salon! I have gotten two haircuts from him, both I was very satisfied with. The first one was a layered cut with a side fringe. He was very meticulous and took his time to make sure all of the layers were even. He was very friendly during the whole interaction. Recently, I made a drastic change from long hair to a pixie cut. I showed Jason my reference pictures, and he was able to cut it in the way I requested while also making it fit my face shape. Again, he took a lot of time to perfect the shape and texture. I was very impressed with the ending result! I have since gotten many compliments on my new style. Additionally, the salon itself is clean and simple. The other staff I have interacted with were nice and efficient. The receptionist also helps with translations to effectively communicate what you want done. I have always favored Asian hair salons for my hair type, but it is very rare that I come across a stylist as skilled as Jason. When I tell you don't trust this salon, DO NOT trust it. I walked in wanting a little trim and some layers and ended up with some CHOPPY ass bangs for $38. My bangs looked fine when I walked in but the guy with the blond hair decided to use THINNING SCISSORS on my bangs, I couldn't even react he did it so fast. Like first of all, why would you be using thinning scissors for bangs, bangs are supposed to be straight and the fact that they also have an option for a bang trim is beyond me because I don't know who'd ever pay $15 for this. Also, second of all, he looked like he didn't know what he was doing. It looked like he was just cutting and hoping for the best by going ham with the thinning scissors at the end. Brought my mom and brother to get their haircut and they got the same exceptional service! We came in as a walk-in so I was a little nervous because my mom has curly hair and not a lot of people know how to cut curly hair. My brother worked with Samson and my mom worked with Jason. The receptionist translated so there would be no miscommunication so everything went very smoothly. My brother and mom both showed their stylists pictures of the haircut they wanted and they both were able to replicate them perfectly, just like my experience! Everyone was so polite and the receptionist made sure to check in often to translate to make sure everyone understood and was on the same page. Sam is amazing with color and hair transformation!! I asked for a balayage with light purple, and I was very nervous on how it would turn out - but Sam made it look amazing! Pretty much exactly what I had envisioned. Sam is very thorough, pays attention to every detail, and really made sure that my hair was evenly colored and blended. The service was a bit pricy and takes a while (mine took almost 7 hours) but it's worth it if you want a balayage or color that looks perfect. Highly recommend doing color with Sam! It was my first time getting my hair done in this salon but i'm so in love with my hair. I found Kion on instagram and saw that he's able to achieve certain hairstyles and the one i had in mind is very specific, so i made sure to reach out thru ig. I sent him an inspo photo i found and he said he'll be able do it. The whole process was smooth bc we coordinated on what day of the appointment would be good for us, i suggest messaging the stylist or calling the salon to make an appointment. He was even able to squeeze in to do my mom's hair, even though she didn't have a scheduled appointment. Overall, Kion was lovely and exceeded my expectations on my hair. Found Michael on Instagram and he did amazing on transforming my brown hair into lightest grey ombré balayage! The whole process took ~7 hours so it was a lot of detailed work. However, be aware that their price quote is for cash only, if you pay in card you will get charged a 4-5% transaction fee (which is $15-20 for an balayage). They also didn't tell me there is an ATM/bank right next door, which I could have walked to get cash to avoid this super high extra fees. It would be nicer if the cashier and the stylist can be clear and helpful to remind their customers on this. read more

Prior to last week, it had been years since my last visit to No 1 Salon. Unfortunately the same issues from the past still persists. I wanted to update my review from my latest experience. Starting with the good: Staff is experienced and know how to handle Asian hair texture. Through the years I've had haircuts from 4 different stylists and liked 3 of the 4. Not so great areas: Website appointments do not represent actual availability, yet they haven't changed this after many years. Best way is to schedule directly with the stylist, but they will also prioritize coloring services over haircuts. Receptionist looks like she could care less - no apologies for scheduling conflicts, smiles or thank you. Although my stylists have been nice to me, I would hear other stylists complain to each other about difficult customers in another language. Sure, we may think like that, but speaking it in the room with the person there since they don't understand is very unprofessional. Simply put, good work, but customer service is lacking, especially in comparison to their peers in Chinatown. read more

I made an appointment with Kion liang through his Instagram and he responded so fast and got me an appointment as soon as he had an open spot! As soon as I got to the salon they seated me right away, a salon staff handed me water, and made sure I was comfortable. Kion really listened to my hair needs as we had a small hair consultation before he did his magic! He was very meticulous on his haircut technique and was very careful to make sure the color was perfect. Although it took a while it was so worth it. He was telling me every step he was going to do and it made me more comfortable. I hesitated to write this review as I did not want to create difficulties for the salon. However, I do want to warn some customers as well. I had my hair balayaged by Kion. If your hair is anything other than virgin, his ideal texture and haircut, your balayage will not turn out as you want. TLDR: hair was randomly cut to give "layers" and was not fixed at end, bleaching left my hair more uneven, color was not anything as I asked. I've had my hair done many times by many different stylists. My hair is coarse and wavy, a hair texture that most Asian hairstylists often comment negatively on. Because of this, I do not have layers in my haircut as it results in frizz. I told Kion this as he said my hair needed layers for the balayage. I trusted his judgement and said some layers would be alright. His version of layers: highlighting my hair with bleach and anything he didn't highlight he would cut off randomly. He did not check how the hair he randomly trimmed off looked with my haircut nor did he check my haircut at the end. Because of this, I have pieces of hair that are much shorter than the rest of my hair and disjointed. I've included a photo below. He also informed me my balayage would be uneven as my hair was balayaged by someone else before. I thought this was fair and I was understanding. He also let me know after bleaching that we could not get the color I showed him. Instead, he pointed out a color on HIS instagram page that he would be able to do for me. After toning, the color was not anything like the color he himself offered. I was extremely disappointed as the final color was darker than the color I originally had. The middle part of my hair was bleached to white while my ends were still yellow. My hair was left even more damaged and bleached for a darker color than I originally had. After two washes of my hair, I've also discovered that the bleach was much more uneven than I realized. Parts of my hair are orange/red and extremely brassy. While he did say that my balayage might be uneven, there is no reason that my hair would range from copper, yellow, to white. It is unacceptable that my hair would look worse than when I paid $380 plus tip to get done. I'm so disappointed by the damage my hair has and feel like I paid for my hair to be destroyed. read more

Booked an appointment and received a confirmation email with the date and time; however, when I showed up, the salon didn't notify the stylist. The stylist I booked online already had an appointment. *sad panda* Luckily, there was an extra stylist and I was able to get a haircut after waiting only about 15 mins. Overall, I was quite happy with the end result! I wanted the "typical" medium-long hair cut, and received just that. Note: I have very thick, straight, and long black hair. Got my hair done by Samson. Be prepared for very broken English. So bring pictures to help. I know a little Chinese and so we managed. I used the online booking system. Luckily I got to China town a bit early and they had room to take me earlier which was great because I didn't want to take the train back so late. I am very pleased with how my hair turned out for bayalange color. Its beautiful. Samson thinned out my hair and it helped tame the masses lol. The whole process took about three hours. They have drinks for you to drink and cell phone chargers. My neck was sore by the end. I waited 24 hours to wash my hair but should have waited 48 or even 72 hrs. I think I lost a little color with the first wash unfortunately. Still, my hair is a beautiful color still even two months later and I'm very pleased. For upkeep, I just switched to shampoo/conditioner for color treated hair and bought some hair serum. I stopped washing my hair every day and switched to about every other day. With those changes the frizz is down and my hair is sleek and shiny every day. Would definitely recommend this place to Asians! read more

Recently got my hair dyed by Kion and left the salon disappointed after leaving with super grey/blue hair (completely different than the reference I showed). I was also told that the hair color appointment included a haircut but was only given a quick trim at the ends after being told multiple times my layered hair was not suitable for a balayage color. He also was not very welcoming to any person that did not have virgin straight hair as he kept commenting about how horrible my layers were (I asked my previous hairstylist for layers..). A positive about Kion was his skill to lift my virgin black hair to a level 9 with minimal breakage. Was quoted $350 for the color (not including tip).. was just expecting to get what I wanted after spending 5-6 hours in the salon chair :( TLDR: Only go here if you understand and taishanese as the employees tend to backtalk customers and leave with what you didnt really ask for. I've only been to this salon twice back in 2021. The first time, Sam color corrected my hair to the right blonde since this other Asian salon I went previously, made my roots uneven when I went in for a root touchup. The 2nd time was 6 months later when I went for another root touch up. Both times, the results were good but the price is a little on the pricier side... I guess that's because the bleaching and toning process somehow ends up taking at least 6 hours... However, fast forward to another 6 months when I wanted to come in again for a root touch up and nothing else, Sam denies me service for the 1st time claiming my hair is too damaged. I suggested about returning for another 2 months and he said it was just too damaged and refused to do it. Ultimately, it's the first time I've ever had someone refuse to do service whilst also having such an awkward consultation? I've been fully blonde since 2018 and been to many different salons in the past. I only decided to come to this salon because a mutual friend had her hair done here, and I've never been to an Asian salon in Chicago that could bleach my hair correctly. This was my 2nd Asian salon that I've been to in Chicago. Since the service rejection and awkward interaction, I haven't come back here since July 2021. I've finally found a better salon that I now regularly go to every 8 weeks for a root touch up which could produce the same results in just half the price and half the time spent. And what do you know, I'm still fully blonde from root to end. I don't know if it's because he uses much harsher bleaching and toning products compared to the other places I've been to, but I can't really believe how damaged my hair is for him to refuse service when other places I've been to hasn't before, nor has ever commented on how damaged my hair is when I don't use any heat treatment at all and try to keep washing at a minimum to maintain the health/integrity of my hair from extra chemicals. read more

I went to Sam for the first time yesterday and really enjoyed my experience! You can tell that Sam really cares about his art - he does an incredibly thorough job and will go back over details he's not satisfied with. Although getting a balayage is pricy, he's worth every penny! I'd recommend looking him up on Instagram and to come in with a pretty good idea of what you want. I also don't speak Chinese, and it wasn't a problem at all. There are translators in the salon, and Sam communicates what he's doing each step of the way. Since he is thorough, these sessions can take a bit of time (mine took 6 hours) so make sure you bring some entertainment! Overall, I'm really happy with my hair! I went in the salon 15 minutes early and he immediately seated me and trimmed my hair afterwards. While he estimated the whole session to be five hours long, my appointment ended up being 7.5 hours long! He stayed 1.5 hours later than his working hours to finish the session.I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here as he started conversations with me, walked me through every step, and offered ways to treat my hair after the bleaching process. Came here on a Sunday for a 2PM appointment with Sam and arrived at 1:58PM. Upon arrival I was asked to come back in an hour. When I came back an hour later I was told to wait again. When I asked the receptionist when they'd start she told me it'd be another 30 minutes probably, but don't worry because the hair cut would be fast. I let her know that I had had plans after that appointment and made them based off of the quoted time they had given me over the phone of 4 hours. She didn't seem too concerned and gave me a half apology. I sat in the chair for another 15 minutes before leaving. The receptionist was surprised when I cancelled and walked out. As a first time client I find it SO DISRESPECTFUL that they didn't at least call to warn me that they were off schedule. Also I don't want you to RUSH DOING MY HAIR. THAT'S WHY I MADE AN APPOINTMENT. The worst customer service - this is one of two times in history where I wish giving zero stars was possible. Clearly they don't value their clients very much. left crying of horror! They ruined my day and my wedding anniversary dinner plans. I'll compare the experience to ordering something online and getting the EPIC FAIL version. The main lesson here- NO COLOR on short hair should take 5+ hours!!! Never cheat on your hair stylist (sorry ISABEL- I'll never go anywhere else but w you again after this horror). I will start off by saying the best part of my experience was the hair wash . I provided a picture of the BLONDE color and cut I wanted. They started working on me at 11:45AM (keep that in mind). As time went on they put product on my hair, waited, washed, more product (waited), washed. By 3pm I started to get anxious as I saw my hair turning orange. I asked "is it going to stay this color?". They said, no we are going to bleach again. I proceeded by replying/along..."OK-how much longer is this going to take??"... when he replied "2 MORE HOURS!!!!"- I almost lost it!!! ARE U KIDDING ME How is this possible???? The hair is short!!!! I've been here since 1145am! I have wedding anniversary reservations at 4pm... they proceeded to tell me I better change or cancel my dinner reservations! I'll admit....it doesn't help that I'm a NEW MOM and was looking forward to a dinner out...I started sobbing!!. Here I am with orange hair after hours of sitting, I'm hungry and now my dinner is ruined. If it wasn't for the mask all the customer would see me/hear me sobbing.... time passed and more bleach... after the wash my hair was between orange and yellow... he had the nerve to ask "DO U LIKE IT??" I SAID NOOOOO .. it's not what I asked for and I referred him to the picture. His colleague came and said - we can get it to that color if we bleach again for another 15 minutes!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! Why would I let them touch and keep ruining my hair anymore???? To make matters worse the style and cut was off too. I had to call my husband and tell him I could make it to our plans. Finally to add insult to injury they made it seem like they were doing me a favor charging me $311 INSTEAD OF OVER $350+++. This service was not even worth $20! I can't believe they would even charge me that much after ruining my hair. Here is my receipt if u all need proof! I do not recommend this place after the horrible service...
