This was definitely one of the hardest reviews I ever had to write. My friend has been coming here since moving to the city and her hair has always come out looking flawless. Hoping to follow suit, I came for a cut. I was a little surprised at how factory-like this salon seemed. It wasn't my cup of tea, but no lost points...yet. The receptionist graciously offered me water and coffee, but what I found weird was despite that they had a coat room (and could easily figure out a tag system), we hung our own coats in a too full rack...tags would have helped, since it took me an additional 5 minutes to find my coat after. Despite showing up on time, my designer wasn't there for 10-15 minutes after. The receptionist gave me a quick tour, which was nice and killed some time but was a little awkward since everyone in the salon kind of stared at me as she gave me the tour. It's the thought that counts, right? Although the hairdresser did listen to what I wanted, she seemed adamant about doing what she felt right (aka overruled my requests a little). The hair wash was possibly the worst experience I ever had. The employee was so nice, but the seats were so so uncomfortable. It was essentially a awkward square stool with a hard and uncomfortable backrest. Something hard dug into my back the whole time. My haircut seemed mediocre while I was there, although the style was amazing. However, after I washed my hair, I realized the bottom ends were not subtle, but instead jagged and uneven. In addition, the left and right sides don't match.. why did i pay for this again? The price was okay, about $70 with tip, but I've never had an uneven haircut before so I didn't know what to make of it. PS i will say that other than the actual experience, the steps prior to actually going in were smooth. I wish I could give them less than 1/2 a star. I just got back from getting a hair color and I've never been so angry I'm my life!!!!! At no point was I informed that a color does not include drying your hair!!!! You can either dry it yourself or walk out with soaking wet hair!!! This is un-fucking-believable!!! I've come here a couple times now, and each time it gets worse. They put me with a senior colorist of ten years who couldn't even put blonde highlights in my hair. When I got to work the next day, my coworkers said who did your ombre? I didn't get ombre?! I was supposed to get basic blonde hair highlights! They cut my hair last time extremely short and uneven, I emailed the salon with my complaint and never got a response. This salon is the worst in river north, there are far better and bigger salons to spend your time and money at. read more

OK be prepared for high prices! I visited Duc (on a referral) for a hair trial and almost suffered from cardiac arrest when I was paying the cashier. $200 for a hair trial, seriously. I should have called and asked for pricing first, but DAMN I didn't think it was going to be THAT high. The hairstyle was actually not bad but not that good....it was better than all the other trials, but still was not something I was really going for. But because I heard so many good things about Duc's haircuts, I had to try it. His prices for haircuts isn't much more than other places. So a couple weeks later I went back for a haircut and was blown away! I didn't even explain that much, and he was spot on! He really tries to analyze your facial structure and match your haircut accordingly. He definitely takes his work seriously and is completely focused on your hair when you are in his chair! I was super impressed! These people really focus on you here, even the shampoo girl. I will be back! read more

Still on the search for that wonderful stylist ... I've had some really pleasant experiences at hair salons here in the city. Unfortunately, I still haven't found that one stylist that makes me walk out of the salon feeling like a million dollars. I've lived here almost a year now and was really hoping to have found that person ... oh well, the search goes on. I scheduled an appointment with Abby (sorry if sp). The receptionist was extremely friendly and so helpful. I was really excited about my appointment based on the receptionist outgoing personality. I came in the next day for my appointment. I am not sure if it was the same receptionist, but it certainly didn't seem like it. I walked in and the atmosphere was a bit intimidating. I announced that I had an appt with Abby. I was told to put on a smock and she'd let Abby know I was here. Umm, where might I find a smock? I like it when a salon acknowledges it's your first time visiting and kind of shows you around or at least where the restrooms etc are located. Anyhow, I found my way and quickly changed. The anticipation starts to build - the introduction to my stylist. Yay! She is friendly and has beautiful hair herself. Always a plus! Now, what will she think of mine. The dreaded report card. How often do you normally cut your hair? What products do you use? How do you normally style your hair? Do you wash it every day? Yes, I know all of the questions are important for her learn more about my hair, but I have a feeling I am being judged by each answer. It's not that Abby wasn't kind or sweet during our hair interrogation, but it's just what comes next. The sell of the products! Ugghhh. The dreaded sell. Whatever happen to: Here is what I am going to use on your hair today. I will tell you a little bit about what each product does for your hair and you can let me know if you want to purchase any of them. I miss those days. Now I feel like I sit in the chair in order to spend more money, treatment, wraps, colorings, products, products and more products. Maybe they just want me to be an informed client. I ended up spending just as much in products as I did on the cut, boo. Back to the real reason I was here in the first place the shampoo, cut and style. The shampoo was really nice. I am a regular client of Lexi (cut/style) & Nora's (color) for over 2 years and will never stop coming to them. Let me just start by saying this....these two make me feel like a QUEEN! The Blowout-to die for....you've never seen a woman work brushes like this. The cut-spectacular...walk out feeling like a celebrity The color/highlights....amazing-Nora never assumes I want "the usual look" but always has a full consultation prior to starting!! My sister recently got married and of course we went straight to our Glam-Squad sources for their day of expertise. Nora meticulously colored our hair extensions and matched them to perfection--we were so happy to have them! Lexi of couse did our hair day of. My sister's curls stayed all day long, my mom (who is super fussy about her hair) was THRILLED with her do, and my updo was AMAZING to the point where people had asked me to take pictures of it at the reception! When we came into a bind at the salon and needed an additional appointment, Lexi even took on an EXTRA bridesmaid and fit us into her schedule with ease. Lexi & Nora-THANK YOU! After hearing about Salon Buzz, reading reviews and being told to go by friends, I am so happy I did. I first had color done by Jamie and wasn't happy with how it turned out, but after speaking with her and the salon manager, Kristen, they were more than helpful and truly wanted me to be happy. I was worried all weekend because I had read some not so great things about their customer service (thanks to Yelp) but I had an extremely opposite experience than what was written here. Kristen was so kind and actually called me back every time she promised she would. They put in place a great plan to help me get the color I want. Now for the best part -- while I sat at the shampoo bowl for what seemed like hours while Jamie was finishing my color, I watched a man perform Kate Middleton blowout after blowout at his chair. All women with long hair who want lots of layers and beautiful, bouncy locks NEED to go to PAUL! He is honestly the best thing that's happened to my hair in a long time. I left the salon after Paul cut my hair feeling exactly how a woman should feel leaving...like the prettiest woman in the world. I can't wait till my hair grows a bit so I can go back. I've gotten so many compliments and have recommended my friends to him. The ones who have already gone feel the same way I do. Paul likes to keep your hair long, but beautiful and layered. I have visited Salon Buzz three times in the last year and have seen one of the stylists consistently. I recently got my hair cut by him and he completely botched my hair. I went home to Minneapolis for Mother's Day weekend and visited my old hair stylist because the stylist was unable to thin my hair the way I wanted it to. My hair stylist then looked at my hair, combed it through and said, your hair is completely uneven. This is completely unacceptable. I should not have to be charged any money for my hair to be Botched. My ends still feel dry and my hair feels heavy. My stylist said the next haircut I get has to be cut dry and will have to literally cut 4+ inches for it to look and feel normal. It is clear this is not acceptable. read more

Salon buzz does it again!!! I've been seeing LIsa for my color for the past year. Sadly, she moved back to her hometown in CO so she referred me to couple other stylists at her level. She referred me to Nadia *** so I originally booked an appt with her. My mistake was booking a color appt in the middle of a busy work week. Long story short, I was running late due to good 'ol rush hour traffic, but constantly calling to see if that's alright or if I need to reschedule with her. As I was talking to the receptionist to reschedule, I heard Nadia complaining to the front desk, "Where is LInda??? She is running half an hour late! What's going on?? " ...... Needlessly to say... that was a super awkward moment. The host did not apologize for Nadia's big mouth or her unprofessional behavior. I did call the salon the day after to talk to a manager, Cristen, but she never called to mediate that mishap. I was in no mood to book with Nadia & that sour puss attitude. So with the help of yelp & the receptionists, I booked my hair color with Jamie ***, She is a level higher than Lisa, but when it comes to color... I am willing to pay the big bucks. + She was on time & pleasant + She listened & looked at all the pictures I brought, and gave me her honest feedback + When I had questions about what she was doing, she stopped to explain her painting/coloring methods + She paid great attention to detail FINAL RESULT: My ombre transformation was beyond beautiful! I called Salon Buzz at 11am (on a Friday) to make an appt with Trisha. Luckily, she had an opening at 4pm! First off, I wanna start by saying how much I LOVE TRISHA! She's young, spunky, personable and funny. :) I came in with a specific hairstyle and cut in mind. Showed her a picture, talked about it some more and off she went to cut my hair. She did an awesome job cutting my hair and even better job by showing me some new tricks with how to style my hair and she ended my appt setting my hair. She took her time, getting to know my personality and my hair. Trisha did a spectacular job overall. My next trim will definitely be with Trisha. I highly recommend her if you have a problem trusting a stylist that chops off too much in length. She's affordable to those who worry about the prices of high end salons. Steven G is a king! I have thick, curly, colored hair that is blown out or straitened every single day. He is an artist. I get compliments on my hair all the time. I have never had anyone cut my hair like he does. His blow dry is also amazing, you walk out of there looking like a vamped up Victoria Secret model....which is a good thing when you start feeling old!! It is expensive, about $90 for a cut with him, but so well worth it. FYI- you cannot put a tip on a CC. I never have cash on me I debit everything so just in case you forget there is a little place kitty corner with an ATM. Also this is steps off the Brown line, literally. I was invited to be part of a student testing - just a normal blow out. Elizabeth was great, attentive and caring. I was happy with my hair at the end of her lesson. Victoria, her teacher was also a natural leader. She taught Elizabeth along the way and showed her additional techniques to utilize. Ashley from Salon Buzz is a god send. Every time I go in to get my hair cut, I walk out feeling like a million dollars and the prettiest girl in Chicago. Ashley is very talented, a great listener (I've always left with the hair style that I wanted) and fun to talk and gossip with. She is informative about hair products to use but never overly pushy about purchasing them. Salon Buzz is modern and convenient-right off the Chicago/Franklin Brown Line stop. They do not accept tips on credit cards, but do allow you to write checks with tips if you don't have the cash. Weekend appointment are usually easy to get also. read more

First the positive: Clean, bright & spacious salon with tasteful decor. They carry a great line of salon products. The receptionist greeted me and was friendly. I have been to this location several times, each time happy with the result. That is why I'm so shocked by what happened. I discussed getting a trim and cleaning up my ends. The stylist and I agreed on cutting 1.5 inches. I told her my fear of getting too much cut off, so I asked her to display, with her fingers, what 1.5 inches looked like to her. We were in total agreement. She starts cutting over 4 inches off the top part of my head- all around. I held up my hair that fell onto my lap and told her that wasn't 1.5 inches. She said, she was creating long layers. I didn't have layers before. We discussed 1.5 inches, not 3x that. It is going to take me at least a year to grow this mess out. I got my hair colored at another salon today and my colorist told me that my hair was uneven as well. I know hair grows back, but it took me years to get to my current length. read more

I've been going to Salon Buzz for about 5 years and have always had great cuts. They do a great job with highlights too. Unfortunately, they have raised the price of coloring AND started to charge for glaze. So my color went from $95 to $140. I won't be getting that done anymore. A killer cut is all I need. I used to go to Salon Buzz when I first moved to Chicago several years ago, but then I decided to stop getting highlights and go au natural, so I stopped going (I guess I was going there mainly for the colorist - can't remember who, though). Anyway, recently I was really disappointed in another stylist at another location and decided to try Salon Buzz again. When I called to make an appointment I was impressed with how up front they were about cost and how long the receptionist stayed on the phone with me to try to find a stylist who was the right fit for my style and budget. I have now had 2 haircuts with Alyssa and I have been really happy with both of them. Alyssa is really nice and very low key, which I appreciate. She definitely listened to what I want and voiced her thoughts when she felt like something wouldn't work - also MUCH appreciated! My hair is about chin length and Alyssa does a great cut. It's stylish and hip while still maintaining the crisp, professional look that I asked for. It also grew out really well, which is something that I have had a hard time with at other places. I have my 3rd haircut with Alyssa already booked and highly recommend Salon Buzz for their professionalism and quality. One thing though, they don't take Amex and you can't add tip on your CC, but there's an ATM right outside the door. read more

I told stylist that I wanted long layers, I got short layers with the shortest almost to my damn ears. I go neutral here because I believe getting a good haircut is equally in the hands of the customer and the haircutter. For a first time customer at this salon, I found the reception friendly and the space nice. I did expect more conversation from the haircutter, Sophia, before getting into the cut. And a closer look & feel of the hair as is. I was overdue for my 6 week short hair cut. My usual stylist is a long commute to Andersonville so I decided to take a recommendation from a friend for Salon Buzz in my neighborhood. Sophia had a good focus for what she was doing but she did not engage me at all in the process or her decisions. All I got to say ahead of time is that I like it tight around the ears & the neckline. I usually say that I like lots of texture on top (I did say that) & more like shingles than feathers (I didn't say that). Did I need to say I want the right & left sides to match? (How can I add a photo?). She used a lot of razer & my thin hair responds best to scissors to get the choppy, textured look that I like. It's still early so I'll hold out hope that the grow out helps this v.short, minimally nuanced cut. read more

I've tried many, many stylists, thinking that if I finally find The One, I'll finally have The Hair. I've failed on this futile venture. Over and over. Truth is, I've always had a love-hate relationship with my hair... minus the love. Well, Trisha's changing all that. She works magic with those scissors, transforming my long locks into bouncy, layer-y loveliness. No hyperbole: I actually like my hair now. It looks good whether I let it air dry or go all out with the dryer and hot rollers. It's even kinda cute when I wake up. My ratio of good hair days to bad has gone way, way up. Plus, she's so super sweet and fun. I'm a forever fan. I have to give props to the front-desk peeps, too. On my way in not long ago, I fell right outside the salon. They rushed to help me, going way above and beyond to help clean me up. After a trip to the ER and many stitches in my kneecap, what was I most upset about? That I had to skip my haircut that day. To make a long story short, Jamie is amazing!! Before Salon Buzz: I'm extremely fussy about my hair, it's the one thing i'm a perfectionist about. I'm a natural brunette but I've been blonde for about 13 years. I moved to Chicago about 6 months ago and went to Salon 7. I wanted to go from blonde to brunette with ombre highlights. Well it was a mess! Although I did get a fantastic hair cut from Natalie. Anyways, the first time i went there i had orange high lights, no exaggeration. I literally looked like Tony the Tiger! They had me come back and the second stylist was better but my hair looked muddy brown (very ash and unattractive), not great. After a tremendous amount of research I decided to fix my hair and go to Salon Buzz. I called their salon and told the receptionist my hair dilemas and trusted her to match me with a great stylist. She definitely did! She booked me with Jamie and I was able to come in just 2 days after calling, which was very exciting. Jamie could obviously see my hair was not looking so hot. We discussed what I wanted and she went to work. I also had an incredible hair cut from Alyssa? My hair is very long, thick and wavy. I also have tons of it! Jamie took her time and suggested I do an all over color and then balayage for highlights, which I am now obsessed with. At first I felt my hair was too dark. I could see that it was a flattering color and that she did an amazing job I just was not comfortable having such dark hair (I had just gone from blonde, to mud, to super dark) and felt that the highlights I had her put in needed a little more pop. The salon was very understanding and I went back to Jamie again. I'm not one to complain (although I did at red 7 but my hair was literally orange) but Jamie was extremely warm, understanding and a pleasure to see again. Not only did she give me exactly what I wanted but it was better than I could have imagined. Thanks to Jamie i LOVE being a brunette! That is a huge statement from someone who was blonde for 13 years! I repeat...love being a brunette and will definitely go back to Jamie for anything color related. She has an impeccable eye for color, will give you exactly what you want and take the time to understand you. I can't say enough positive things about Jamie. If you're looking for a new colorist, look no further. I'd trust her with both blonde and brunette hair. I should also mention that strangers have stopped me on the street to compliment my hair, it's that awesome. Go see Jamie and you'll never want to go to another stylist again. Also a few notes about the blow dry station: The first time i went and had a cut Alyssa (i hope that's her name) blew it out and it was an average job, but she was short on time because she squeezed my cut into her schedule. The cut was spectacular though. The second time I went back and blow dried it myself. I actually didn't mind it as much as I thought I would. Jamie came back many times to check the color and I fell in love with a few products and brushes I used and now am much better about blow drying my hair at home! Obviously, I'd much rather have someone blow dry my hair (it takes me about 45 minutes to do it myself) but if you're trying save a little bit of money, don't be afraid of the blow dry station. read more

I was in yesterday to see a hair colorist and asked for a natural, light brown, sun kissed balayage and received the complete opposite. The hair colorists do not blow dry and style your hair at the end of your coloring service. I literally had to walk out with wet hair- they offer you to dry your own hair which is super weird to me so I had no idea what I was walking out with. Once I got home and dried my hair I was in total shock. I looked like a skunk with botched highlights. I immediately called the salon and explained and they told me they could get me in the next day to have a senior colorist redo the coloring at no charge. Unfortunately, they do not give back your original payment. I saw Lyndsey who was AMAZING. She knew exactly what I was looking for and fixed my hair the next day. Why look anywhere else? Nora is the most fabulous colorist. Down to earth, a fabulous listener, and is an artist when it comes to color. My last appointment featured her use of a new highlighting technique that she learned during a recent educational seminar she attended in NYC. The color was stunning and has grown out in a way that is the best I've seen to date. For blondes that look natural and not streaky, you must see Nora. Also not to be missed is the unbelievable work of Judith. She's been my hairdresser for 16 years (gulp!). Her work is unparalleled. She works with my hair which is fine but I have a lot. It would be a wreck in anyone else's hands. Finally, watching Tabitha's Salon Takeover reminds me of how wonderful Salon Buzz on Superior really is. Clean, concise and caring. I went there on 11/29/2016 and got a women's hair cut. I'm Asian and have thin hair that doesn't create a lot of volume. I'd say my hair lifestyle is high maintenance having had long ombré hair down my waist before. I'd crimp and curl and style my hair at least once a week. I've been to some of the best salons in Hong Kong and America so I think I have certain standards. My previous haircut ombré dye job was with Rachel at Mane in Chicago to give you an idea. It was my first time at the salon and I must say that the biggest pro is that I loved Was Reba's hair cutting skills. She was great, she understood my desire for a lob and she did not disappoint. I think what I reserved my one star is the lack of accountability for the entire process. I did not like the person that washed my hair, I thought she lacked the skills and had foam in my ear even though she was very nice and apologetic. I liked the person that blow dried my hair, he was good. I think while the hairstylist was top notch, I think all other services would need to be on par as well for the price to be justified. I have been going to Scott Delong, the guru colorist for the past 3 years at the River North location. He is amazing! The color is perfect every time. I always get compliments on my hair. I owe it all to Scott! I also have recently been going to Carly for my haircuts. She's very good. Highly recommend her. As for customer service at the front desk, everyone is nice enough, especially Tokyo. He's super sweet and helpful. However, there is one individual, a tall guy, that really needs an attitude adjustment or find a new career... When you are paying those prices, you expect 5 star treatment! He should really realize this and take some lessons from Tokyo!!! read more

I started seeing Nora for color after a stylist at another salon gave me "hot roots" ie when the top inch or so of my hair was red and then brown. It was really odd. Nora fixed the color in one appointment, and in 3 appointments, and made my hair picture perfect in time for my May wedding. She's awesome and so fun to chat with while she's making you gorgeous. She even turned me onto the ecaille (tortoise shell) trend and I am loving that now. read more

I broke up w/my stylist of 7 years to come to Duc @ Salon Buzz...I had long hair and decided to take the plunge and cut it all of. He did an INCREDIBLE job. It was the sleekest cut, and fit my facial structure perfectly. Every time I go I leave w/an awesome cut that isn't so difficult that it looks totally different than when I do it myself. Not to mention Duc is darling, and turned me on to my current obsession, chanel's newest mascara. Duc also does my color and he does a great job. He's expensive, but more than worth it. Everyone that works there is incredibly friendly and helpful, and it's an awesome space. They only take cash for tip, or you can cash a check there, but there's an atm attached to the salon so it's never been an issue. This salon does some of the best work in the city. I've seen Nora for color and Lexi for cut/style/blowouts for years. Nora is awesome at making sure you get the color you want and making sure it looks great with your skin tone. Lexi wasn't awarded Allures best blowout in Chicago for no reason. I swear her blowouts last for days on end. Both ladies are quite pleasant to be around and down to earth. They only reason I didn't give them five stars is because sometimes it's hard to get appointments fast if you are desperate, which just shows how great they are. read more

Usually after getting a haircut I'd have to go home and restyle my hair. Previous hair stylists typically only blow dry my hair and don't take the extra time to run a flat iron thru it. I look forward to having Melanie cut my hair because it looks AMAZING!!!! She takes her time and does a great job. It is expensive but sooo worth it! I will never let anyone else cut my hair again! Love me some Trisha. She can do no wrong when it comes to hair. A friend recommended that I use her for my wedding. Best decision I have ever made. I came in to see her before the wedding for 2 trials (2nd trial was for the extensions). Then, came in for a haircut. I have thin hair that just won't seem to grow anymore and I get real nervous when hairstylists cut my hair. She was so careful and it turned out great. The wedding - I really cannot say enough wonderful things about the way she made me feel. I felt utterly gorgeous (extensions and all). I will without a doubt go back to her from here on out. Oh, AND she's super sweet and so personable. I do want to add that I saw Norah for my color and she was AWESOME too! My color was perfection and I will be seeing her from now on as well. read more

- ANDY is great at cutting my hair...I have long hair and don't want to get cuts every month when it starts to grow out because of how it was cut...She suggested a Kim K style cut and its great! It's been a month and as it has been growing out, it still looks as good as when she cut it...nice and full...the ends of my hair still feel good...Who wants there hair spiky or thinned out-not me! - I use to go to Andreas..the owner.. he is great at cutting hair but gets distracted easy while doing hair which I don't think is okay when his hair cuts are not cheap so I had to change to to someone else for hair cuts. This salon is def worth the money.. good looking inside, clean, they have cucumber water...don't go there if you don't like to spend money..It is high end salon... I believe my hair is worth it! read more
