What disappointed me most was not only the result, but the way my concerns were handled afterward. Instead of taking responsibility for the result and trying to understand why I was unhappy, the stylist repeatedly shifted the conversation toward blaming me. I was made to feel that the problem was somehow related to my language barrier and cultural differences in communication. At one point, the conversation even became about money and what I had paid for -- essentially, "You didn't pay for the whole highlight, right?" -- which felt completely inappropriate and shaming. I have never experienced this level of disrespect or lack of accountability in a beauty salon. I left feeling sad, embarrassed, and unwelcome, when I had simply come in expecting professional service and to be heard as a client. I want to be clear that I don't believe this experience represents the values of the entire salon or its owners. My issue is specifically with this individual stylist and the way he handled a situation when the result did not meet my expectations. I am sharing this so other women, especially those who may have a language or cultural communication difference, know to make sure their concerns are genuinely listened to and treated respectfully. A client should never be made to feel guilty or ashamed for expressing disappointment with a service.

Chicago has been graced with so many unique and incredible opportunities in business, entertainment, culinary delights, and the list goes on. It would only go to say that in keeping with Chicago's lists of great fortune they would now be the benefactors of one of the best hair stylists in the world. And of course in keeping with Chicago tradition, at a fraction of the price we have paid for the privilege in Miami, and New York City. Gregory Dickinson recently moved from our little slice of paradise here in South Beach to be closer to his family and friends in Chicago, leaving behind a clientele wishing it wasn't so. Many of us, me included have scrambled our staff and schedules to create business opportunities in Chicago to justify a flight to the windy city for a visit to Gregory's new home Joseph Michaels Salon in the Gold Coast. How good is this guy? I am a 43 year old business executive who has lived in more than 14 states and a dozen countries over the years. Finding a good stylist is always a challenge and not an enjoyable process of trial and error. Even when you patronize the best salons with the best reputations, it's hard to find the right stylist. Gregory is quite simply the best at what he does!! He is a humble guy so he won't tell you but he was the Aveda stylist of the year a few years back "A BIG DEAL" as well as the head stylist at some big name salons in NYC. He's done fashion shows for top designers, photo shoots for International fashion magazines and was a marquis stylist at Ric Pipino's salon in the Shore Club on SOBE. For those not familiar with Pipino, he is regarded as one of the best if not best stylists in modern times and his client list is a celebrity who's who, and only surrounds himself with top talent. The bottom line is this, Gregory Dickinson's client capacity will fill up very quickly and this opportunity will be hard to come by again. While he was here in Miami you would have to wait until someone moved away to become a client. Many people believe a haircut is a haircut and in many cases they are right, but they haven't had Gregory perform his artistic magic on them. Full disclosure--I'm Imani's mom, but I'm also a paying client, and my review is based on the service I receive every time I sit in her chair.My experience with Imani was exceptional from start to finish! She is incredibly knowledgeable and takes the time to educate me about my hair, teaching me how to properly care for it at home so I can maintain healthy results between appointments. Her product knowledge is A-1. She explains what each product does, why she's using it, and how it benefits my hair, which gives me confidence in maintaining my style on my own. Most importantly, she never makes me feel rushed. She takes her time, listens to my concerns, and truly cares about the health of my hair--not just the final look. And I have to say, her hands are magical! My color and haircut always turn out beautifully, and I leave feeling confident, refreshed, and well cared for. I moved to the City from the suburbs a year and a half ago. As a licensed Cosmetologist myself, I had a very hard time finding a hair stylist in the City (Gold Coast) who does both cut and color who didn't ruin my hair. After a few so so haircuts and a color service from another well known salon that actually fried and broke my hair, I found Joseph Michael Salon. I made an appointment with Aquiles and was very lucky as he had a cancellation. This is the BEST haircut and color I have seen in a couple of years, he is absolutely AMAZING! He listens and consults (he is also very funny and sweet) and takes his time to make sure you're happy. Well I am, he is amazing and he and the salon have a client for life in all aspects. I have nothing but good things to say about Joseph Michael's and especially Michelle. I have been going JM's for a few months now after following Michelle there from her previous salon. I bounced around to different salons after my stylist of 5 years left Chicago and I luckily found Michelle a few blocks from my house and have been with her since. I have a short haircut that leaves little room for error and I constanly get compliments every week on my cut, even when I let it go too long between cuts. Every time I see her, she has me doubled over laughing about something or another. At the end of my last cut I changed my mind on my bangs and she took the time to shape them exactly how I asked. Alycia can take a vague idea and make it into exactly what you have been envisioning! She works quickly yet meticulously and can recreate any look you ask for (I usually bring a picture if I have something super specific in mind, or if I'm changing things up a bit). She's friendly and personable to boot! I cannot see myself going to another salon or stylist unless Alycia happens to change salons ever...in which case, she would be taking my business with her, definitely! Though a newer talent, Alycia has done a wonderful job styling, coloring, and cutting my hair. I like that I can email her back and forth pictures of what I am thinking before arriving for my appointment. This way, when sitting on the chair, I do not feel rushed to make a decision that I might regret later. The best vote of confidence comes not from myself, but others that compliment my hair after the visit. And those have been many! I have been seeing Jason Berg at Joseph Michael Salon for almost two years now. He is an excellent colorist, almost intuitive. In regards to his cuts/styles, he really listens to what you want and is able to interpret it and make it work for your hair type. I feel that's hard to find; someone who will actually tell you how to make a style that you want work as opposed to saying he can't do it or trying and failing. I get compliments on either my cut or my color almost daily. I plan to continue to see him at this salon as long as he's there! read more

Stevie is amazing!!! I randomly went to Joseph Michael for an updo, and luckily got her. She did such a beautiful job, and I had compliment after compliment at the wedding. After Gregory Dickinson left Chicago, I went through a dozen+ stylists in hopes of replacing him. Don't know why no one has mentioned Vesna yet! She is a guru with curly hair. Before Vesna, I had been all over, and no one else could deal with my hair. I swear, she's a miracle worker for curls. Her blowouts are also phenomenal. I had a horrible experience at K Chula seeing Holly for highlights/cut. As you can see in the…read morephotos I received an atrocious job of blonde highlights. I've never once ever had any issues with previous stylists lifting my hair color and I can't believe I was allowed to walk out of the salon with my hair looking horrible and paying full price. During the highlighting process it was very apparent Holly did not want to be there working late on a Friday night to do my highlights even though my appointment was scheduled for 6pm. She was rushing the entire time, put my foils in such a messy way and hit me with a brush several times while styling. During the wash/rinse process she pulled the foils out so rapidly it hurt as she was pulling on my hair forcefully. While styling she then placed bleach on my scalp without foil twice because she didn't like the orange of my hair. I left the salon in pain with my scalp feeling on fire for several hours after the appointment. The next morning I received mediocre customer service from Carrie the owner who genuinely did not seem very concerned with this horrible uneven money piece/highlighting job. Carrie let me know she could fix the color but not blow dry/style. Why did I pay $250 then? The blow dry and style should be included especially in the winter when I would've had to gone out in the cold with wet hair. I was able to receive a full refund after waiting at the salon for 45 minutes and I should've been offered the full refund right away when I stated I was upset with my hair. Hair Stylists need to be held more accountable for their actions and I truly hope nobody else has to experience such pain and discomfort at this salon. Do not come here! I will no longer be recommending K Chula.

They don't use Aveda products anymore, but I still really enjoyed my experience as well as the end result.
