I've been super happy with the color (3 times) and cut (once). Products seem to be animal friendly, as well as high quality. I visited Blueberry Moon for a bridal H&MU trial. All interactions leading up to the visit were with Jennie, who is super sweet. Upon arrival, I got checked in to do makeup and then hair. I was also able to change my outfit at the salon for engagement photos- greatly appreciated. The makeup portion was lovely. I wasn't blown away or anything, but I was veeery happy with the process and final result. It lasted all day, too! Big thanks to Aiga :) The hair portion with Ashley, however, left me beyond disappointed. I admit this is partly on me for not speaking up enough. I hope it serves as a lesson for other brides to be. Simply put, the stylist did everything I asked her NOT to do and may as well have ignored all the inspo I shared (which I tried to be especially realistic about because I know my own hair well - straight, short, very fine - and I struggle with confidence because of it). I suggested a half-up style, and my inspiration photos, emailed a few days in advance, included some braids and twists. I even explained specifically what went wrong at my brother's wedding and why it upset me so much... and she proceeded to do the exact same look, that relied on curls (which never hold) and U-shaped pins (which my hair is too fine for) supporting a teased-up crown. You can imagine my surprise when it all fell apart within the hour... She also seemed rushed for some reason even though she assured me that nobody was coming in after me? They advised about 3 hours for the entire H&MU appointment, but it took barely half that, including my outfit change. I wish Ashley would have been direct with me if there was some reason my ideas couldn't be achieved instead of rolling with another one that was set up for failure despite multiple warnings. In hindsight I sincerely wonder if she got me mixed up with another client? On the bright side, I did learn a lot about hair extensions as she kept recommending that I try them for volume. And I just might! But that was not the goal of this visit. Overall, I highly recommend Blueberry Moon for makeup but cannot say the same for styling if you happen to have fine hair. read more

Update: I appreciate the response. To be clear I was not told non aveda products were being used on my hair until after the color had been applied and processed. I gave my aveda formula and was told okay let me go mix it. There was never conversation when apt or explaining my aveda color formula that they weren't aveda anymore. I am glad you have found a new line you love and think it'll be fabulous when your online and store footprint matches that. I used to go here years ago but moved. I am now back in town and went in for a trim and to get my layers touched up. The stylist was pretty quiet and didn't speak to me the entire cut, which was fine I don't mind silence, but I am used to a more engaging stylist. I told her I am growing my hair out and just wanted a minimal trim and touch up of my long layers. She said she would cut off 1.5 inches, fine. She dried my hair curly so it was tough to tell how it really looked but something felt off. We'll I washed my hair and styled it straight this morning to see she cut off WAY more length than we discussed, closer to 2.5 inches. The ends are super uneven and incredibly choppy and the back is shorter than the front (not at all a style I asked for). See photo for how awful the cut is. Will not be returning Update: I spoke with the salon and they brought me in right away for a fix. The new stylist, Ashley, shaped it up and it's looking waaaay better. They went above and beyond. I dropped by Blueberry Moon recently for a women's cut and it is an absolutely adorable salon. The interior was very clean, and all the service and people I interacted with were very kind and friendly. The location is very convenient and the prices are pretty fair (a regular women's cut runs $45 before gratuity). Starting with the positives: My pre-cut shampoo was fantastic and soothing, and comes with a great added hand and arm massage as you are soaking your hair. An absolute treat before the cut. My hairstylist was extremely nice and pleasant to work with. I felt like she had solid feedback on what would look good. I was going from pretty long hair to an above shoulder short cut, and the style, shape and length of the cut I got was very flattering. She gave really solid advice about how to style it at home and even styled my hair a certain way like some pictures I brought, as something I could do at home instead of wearing it straight. All together, the experience was pretty positive. My biggest problem here, and it's a shame given how good the overall experience was, is that the technical aspect of the cut was plain bad. The two sides of my hair are clearly not the same length with almost a half inch difference which was apparent even when my hair was being cut. Uneven sides on a cut with a middle part just seems like such a basic mistake to make. When she was clearly done cutting and had started to blow dry, I pointed to the specific chunky pieces of hair on the front bottom layers that were uneven. She was not defensive about it at all, and said she could see what I was talking about. However, instead of trimming down the bottom layers that I was point to which were too long, she did a really cursory pass on the top layers with the thinning shears (which were already a bit short), so clearly just completely disregarded what I said. And I didn't want to have more length taken off the top layers since I was already going for a shorter cut. The bottom of the entire cut around the back of the head is also fairly chunky, and since one side is longer it looks asymmetrical from the back as well. I didn't want to end up in a situation where we over-corrected either side and I ended up with a wayyyyy shorter cut than I wanted. I didn't ask for anything technically challenging - just a slightly above shoulder length cut with a middle part - and I think she delivered well on the look I was going for. So I feel a little mixed writing this review since I did really like my stylist and she seem to have a great style sense; it was just that the actual hair cutting part was pretty underwhelming. read more

Amazing experience for a deluxe haircut! They treated me very well from the moment I walked in to the time I walked out It was my first time in their salon after reading good reviews fr yelp..all the staff and reception sounded super nice...Adrian was my hair stylist and she did a superb job from asking me first what sort of style I was thinking, recommended/explained products they carried in-store and what she was going to use for my hair, gave me hair care tips, and even took before&after photos in their cute photo wall! Their prices are reasonable as published not as pricey as compared around the area for the complete service of wash-cut-blow-dry..It is always best to confirm since everyone's hair is different and also depending on how experienced your stylist is. For me I loved Adrian's professionalism. She promoted the salon's products but that was really up to me of course if I wanted extra stuff to take home..I ended up buying extras but most of all I really loved how my hair felt after her TLC! WELP- One thing is for certain- I will never be back at Blueberry Moon. After mistakenly charging me $100 (yes, you read that right), they have done absolutely nothing to make up for the issue: not a discount or credit on my account, heck not even a freaking coupon for all of the trouble they have given me and how much of my time they have wasted. To start- this review would have been 5 stars if it wasn't for their terrible customer service. The woman (Abie) who cut my hair did an outstanding job, and I would have 100% been back and also recommended them to other friends and family. Here's what went wrong: I booked my first time appointment online for a simple cut, and when I got to the end of the booking it required me to pay the full price of the haircut ($45). Reluctantly, I paid, but after showing up and getting a great cut, I was happy. I went up to the front counter to give my tip in an envelope to the receptionist, where she proceeds to tell me my total is "one twenty five". I question it for a second, then decide it must be one dollar and twenty five cents for the tax on my $45 cut. I hand my card over to the receptionist, who is not even making eye contact, while she simultaneously swipes my card and says "one hundred even", while the receipt is printing. Immediately confused, I go "...What?!", and she responds, "it's $100 for your "xxx" treatment". Confused, I look at her and say: "I don't even know what that is. I got a simple haircut and already pre-paid online". For the first time our entire interaction she looks at me, and stares blankly while saying "Aren't you Katie so-and-so??". "No........". She didn't even check to ask my NAME before charging me $100. She tries to do the refund in store, but says she doesn't really know how to do it, so I should check my bank statement now. I pull up my credit card statement and don't see any refund, just the charge of $100. Frustrated, I had to run out and did not have time to deal with this anymore, and we clearly were going nowhere. I told her I'll keep an eye on my statement and call if the refund does not go through. I then start getting voice messages and emails from who I can only assume is the manager or owner, stating that the receptionist not only mistakenly charged me $100, but she refunded me $200. I spend the next week trying to get back in contact with these people for something that once again, is not even my fault. Now, over a week later I just got off the phone with said manager/owner, and she asked for my full credit card number, over the phone... so they can now charge me $100 for the mistakenly refunded $200. All of this for a mistake that YOUR salon made? I would have let it slide if they would have been apologetic or given me something in return for all of this running around and the back and forths that I have dealt with over the last week. When your company (whether a salon, or not) makes a huge mistake for a client, you not only rectify it, but you should outweigh it with something in return. A free cut, a discount on a treatment, a freaking bottle of shampoo. I don't care- but it shows how much you stand behind your salon/company. Absolutely outrageous. TLDR? Fine haircut, terribly run management and front desk. There are too many other salons in LP to take your business. read more

Very bad haircut. It looks like it I got it chopped from a ponytail. I even showed the hairdresser multiple photos before of very layered and beautiful hair. She was unable to replicate and I cried when I got home it was so bad. She also didn't even know how to use a round brush to style it. She ended up using a flat iron to compensate some sort of curl. To update my review: I stand by the fact that my hair was not done properly. The manager responded to my review in the same was that she responded to my emails 8 months back: Defensive, condescending, and blamed me for the fact that my hair was not done properly. She made me feel terrible for having an issue with the way my hair was done. She humiliated me by telling me I had a "great deal of breakage" My pictures that I attached to this review make it perfectly clear the way I looked before my service was performed, what I was expecting, and how I looked after. She blamed the "quality of my hair' on the reason that the DARK BROWN dye did not take to my hair, but refused to explain why dark brown color was applied to my hair to begin with. I was under the impression that I was very subtly adding a bit of dimension to my blonde, and at no point did I think or ask to be any other color than blonde. Also it was never mentioned to me in my consultation that Jeff had any concerns with the quality of my hair, and if he would have even hinted that he thought it would not go well, I would not have had the service performed, I never demanded to have my hair dyed. The manger even went as far to say that she wished everyone could look like a "magazine clipping" that they brought in. I never brought in a magazine clipping, I had several photos on my phone and Jeff was very honest with what he thought would be a good fit for me, and we decided on the photo that I attached to this review, a photo from a salon that my cousin went to in GA that was taken on an iPhone, not a magazine clipping. Plus it's not 1993, so people don't bring those to salons anymore. The manager stated that I refused to show her my hair in person, definitely not true: I specifically made a trip to Chicago the weekend I had my hair done, at the time I lived/ worked in West Lafayette, IN, a 2 hour drive away, and I worked 8am-6:30pm Monday through Saturday, my schedule simply did not allow for it, I offered to come in the next time I was able to make a trip to Chicago the following month, but at the manager's request I sent the very photos that are attached to this review. As far as abuse and threats, it simply did not happen. My friend even sent me the email that she sent to the manager after my experience and the only thing we could possibly think of as a "threat" was a sentence where she told the manger that she wanted to bring this issue directly to her attention instead of going straight to social media. I would think that is less of a threat and more of a professional courtesy. If my review can save even one person from having to deal with this manager, It will have been worth it. It is very clear that her reply was for no other purpose than to try embarrassing me and bully me with the thin veil of "I'm sorry we disappointed you" seeping with backhanded insults. She showed her true colors, and I am validated in the fact that anyone who reads her reply can agree with the fact that she refused to take responsibility, insulted the quality of my hair and accused me of lying that I had never dyed my hair before. I had to email her a photo of me when I was 5 years old with the same color hair. It was a valuable lesson for me though, there will always be people out there who simply cannot take constructive criticism and will go out of their way to make others look foolish without even realizing that the true fool is themselves. My review was in no way meant to hurt Jeff or any of the other staff, they were all quite nice, and clearly so many people love this salon, their stellar reviews are what brought me in to begin with. Everyone has off days, but unfortunately for me, it caused my hair to be ruined for 8+ months. Blueberry Moon and I wandered fortuitously into each other's lives on a busy summer Saturday afternoon. I was desperately in need of a haircut and style for a special event later that day. Originally, two separate stylists were going to do my haircut and style, but a few cancellations happened so Taylor, who was cutting my hair, was free to do my updo as well. They were extremely flexible in fitting everything in together. On top of that, we spoke about how I was running on a tight schedule and would have to run elsewhere to do my makeup. However, something I didn't realize is that BM does makeup applications as well. So when Taylor told me she had time to do that if I wanted, I was more than happy to sit back and relax. It was absolutely lovely to have everything done in one place under one person's skilled hand. My haircut was done dry with scissors, and I'm loving it even post - hair style. The updo itself was gorgeous and lasted all night for the event I was attending, and the makeup was done exactly to my specifications and per my instructions - glamorous and sophisticated in understated neutrals. They even took a few pictures of the hairdo and look for their website, which I'm looking forward to seeing because I definitely forgot to take pictures of that myself. Not only was Taylor a perfect fairy godmother to my disheveled self, but the rest of the staff was accommodating and sweet. I was given tons of water and tea so I didn't dehydrate during my 2.5 hour visit there, and checkin/out was blissfully simple. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. read more

I had an extremely positive experience at this salon. The salon itself is very nicely designed and the front desk girl was very kind, offering coffee which is always a nice touch. Ashley is a phenomenal colorist. I've had a streak of bad luck trying to find a new colorist and I'm glad I drove out of my way to this place. This might not mean much to other people, but Ashley gave me the best consultation I've ever had. I've never been asked the right questions about my hair. She truly listened to what I wanted to achieve, instilled confidence in me about what she was going to do, and how it would look. This review is for a blowout service performed by Dana. I had an appointment with Frank (he is amazing, hands down a 5 star stylist) but he was not available so I saw Dana instead. Her actual work was not bad, but she made me feel so uncomfortable by constantly mentioning how long my hair was. It was definitely not a compliment, it made me feel like I was giving her extra work, and instead of being a pleasant experience I could not wait to get out of that chair. For starters I'll say that if you are using a Groupon, just be prepared to explain yourself. I had purchased a Groupon for a "green goddess" facial (I paid Groupon $140 for what was described as a $280 value). I checked in, got my facial, all was fine (I mentioned my groupon when I made my appt) - when checking out the girl checking me out said, your total is $91. I said, uh, what? And she said, your balance is $91. I was confused - I said oh - well I was using a Groupon - should I show you that? And she said yes, and the remaining balance is $91. Um. No. I said, oh, uh... are you sure? The groupon is supposed to cover the service. And she said - no Groupon covers part of it, you are responsible for the rest. Um, ok, but what the f. lol. No, that's not how groupon works (and this poor girl clearly did not understand). She said - yeah groupon pays for part of it and you pay for the rest. Still not right. Luckily, she didn't argue with me (which I appreciated very much) - she said, let me get your aesthetician and ask her. So Aiga who did my facial came out, and explained that no- I did not owe $91 and the Groupon was sufficient. (I guess it had to be entered in their system in some different way?) Whew. But it was stressful! I hate fighting with people over money, it's just weird. And the girl apologized - again clearly she just had no idea but it was still sort of unpleasant to leave on that note. Anyway, on to the facial. So the Groupon advertised a 75 min service and I usually get annoyed when I see reviews where people complain about being shorted 5 minutes but legit my facial was an hour (I can only guess they thought it was meant to be an hour because I got there right at 1, used the restroom, had my facial, used the restroom again (I'm pregnant, I can't help it), argued about the bill, and was still in my car and ready to leave at 2:10, so I did not get a 75 minute facial). But the facial was great - like, top notch. Aiga was lovely and really did a good job, I would recommend her to anyone. The extractions hurt like a mofo but suffer for beauty right? (and she did ask me to tell her if it hurt, AND I must have been grimacing bc she stopped at one point and asked again but if you're getting stuff done, I will tolerate it!). There was also some sort of peel as part of the facial, and holy smokes, I can honestly say my face has never looked or felt so smooth. I couldn't stop touching it (I asked about purchasing the peel but it's not for home use). So the facial overall was fantastic. But a $280 value? Ehhhhh I wouldn't. Maybe I am just cheap. I honestly don't know that I would do it again for $140 (I left a $50 tip so all in all this was a $190 adventure for my face). But the salon is lovely, the facial was really great, and I'm glad I did it - I just don't know that I could afford to do it on the regular. read more

Yes, it is a hair salon and not a breakfast place And yes, it is in Chicago - not in Michigan. I really like it there. Like, really. I had an appointment at 10. I was out at 2. So yes that may seem like a long time (and it is) but in my mind it mostly shows that the staff takes its time to give you the best experience possible. And they do. Naleena was my colorist (they are departmentalized) and did the most amazing job I have ever had. She walked me through the all process very patiently, talked hues, shades, highlights and how to give me what I wanted without being able to mouth it (I am silly like that). The end result is just gorgeous - rich, warm, nuanced. I am almost in love with my hair. I then switched between the hands of their new stylist, Madelaine but not before an amazing treat during my rinse/shampoo: A HAND MASSAGE. Yep - couldn't believe it either but that was such a nice little touch.....Loved it. I wanted swept bangs - Madelaine gave them to me. I wanted to tame my curly hair in the back - Madelaine redefined my cut to give it more weight and ipso facto kill the unruly waves. Less layers in the back, more in the front. Deal. I also wanted to get rid of the stupid zit on my forehead but Madelaine couldn't help much there..... The color was a little expensive (the cut is a mere $45 - lovey-love!) but putting your head in the hands of a pro is SO worth it. Tips: - despite the name - it's not open at night...they close at 9 during the week. - cash only for tips - 4 blocks from the Armitage Brown Line and the Fullerton Red Line. - street parking not too bad - Nookies 2 is literally next door - you can continue the splurge and show off your nice new hair in all the boutiques around! read more

OK, so part 2 of the Girly end of the Yelp Charity date was held here. I signed up for 2 manicures. Was initially a little shocked at the price but figured, well this is an Aveda salon, there must be some extra fanciness here that justifies the price. The salon is done in an almost beachy theme, lots of weathered wood and stones with the blueberry coloured walls. The nail station was in the back. They offered Chi and OPI polishes. We had two very nice manicurists, who both did a nice job. However, the manicure itself was no different than manicures I have paid $15 or even $10 for. There were not even any fans! And since there were two appointments after us we had to move to the front, where there are only 2 chairs and those were occupied. So it felt like "stand around and get in everyone's way" or "pay up and hurry get out". I opted to leave which was a mistake because even though I was being careful, one nail hit the zipper on my jacket and marred it. I don't know if this is a standard price for manicures in this area, but I think I will stick with the cheapy places I normally frequent and at least get a fan to make sure I am dry before I leave. read more

Blueberry Moon is, hands down, the best salon experience I've had in Chicago, DC or Milwaukee. I like my haircut/treatment so much I'm practically channeling an Herbal Essences commercial. I went into Blueberry last week for a Brazilian Keratin Treatment with Ryan, who is fantastic. The treatment was reasonably priced, and Ryan also gave me a great haircut (which he included in the price of the treatment, along with two bottles of shampoo and conditioner). Ryan also offered a free blow-out after I'd waited the requisite 72 hours to wash my hair, which looked wonderful (though I'm convinced I'll never quite be able to replicate it at home). The staff is incredibly friendly, and the salon also offers massages while you're getting your hair done. Long story short, I signed up for Yelp, which I've read for years, solely to tell people what a great experience I had at Blueberry. read more

I came here for the Pretty City "Love You" $59 specials. Since work has been particularly stressful lately, I decided to go with two treatments, the 60-minute facial and 60-minute massage. I was greeted by the very friendly receptionist, who let me know my facial would be a little bit late. She was very apologetic, and I didn't care since I had nowhere else to be. Liz did my facial. She was careful to explain that the lateness would not shorten my service at all, which was nice. I started out with a soothing foot soak while we discussed my temperamental skin. Then, she basically gave me the best facial I've ever had. It was incredibly relaxing - especially the foot massage during the steaming! And my skin looked great afterward (Liz gets bonus points for telling me my skin isn't as bad as I think - I needed the self-esteem boost). Then I had the massage with Blum. The man is great. He did a lot of work on my back, neck and shoulders. I left feeling so relaxed, I was basically in a daze, and wound up falling asleep that night at shortly after 9pm! On a Saturday when I had already slept in! Afterward, I wanted to get some products for my skin. Liz had left a list of everything she recommended for me and when to use them. Since she was already in another service, Terra helped explain each one to me. I definitely recommend Blueberry Moon (and the $59 specials are going all the way through February, so go take advantage of that deal!). read more

I tried their Cinnamon Roll Pedi for the $31 Pretty-In-Pink promotion. They promised this experience to last an hour and have all the special potions and lotions created just for this. Not so. Katie (I believe that was her name) did an OK job at trimming and scrubbing. I could still see many missed details that other places would have taken care of. Her polish job and foot massage were decent. I was in and out in less than 40 minutes and not a single cinnamon product was used...wtf? (Excuse my profanities.) Thus, even though they claim this is a $65 treatment, it's not worth it during this time. I'm starting to believe if you come in for the Pretty In Pink Promos, most spa places are cutting you short. Mistake in my opinion. Save your money and hit up your favorite nail spa instead. read more

I heart Jeff (color) and Ryan (cut)! They are both 5 star stylists!!! They are both fun and do such a great job on my VERY thick and long hair. Most stylists I have gone to in the past end up complaining about the amount of time it takes to cut and color my hair, but these guys just let me enjoy my time and have me walking out of the salon with fabulous locks. Jeff worked with me to finally come up with the perfect dark blond mix of 3 hi/low lite combo it took to make me happy! LOVE him. Ryan cut my bangs/hair over the winter and I have never in my life had more strangers approach me about my cut. If you want bangs, he is your man. Can't recommend those two any more! The reception staff is always very friendly and welcoming, as well. Always a good time at Blueberry Moon! read more
