I've been getting my hair cut with Mallory at Stranded and previously at her old salon too. She now operates as an independent stylist within Stranded- which gives each stylist more creative freedom. Mallory always gives me a great haircut and while I no longer get my hair colored (personal decision nothing to do with her) she used to do a great job with my balayage. She takes her time with her appointments and makes sure you're happy with cut and/or color. I would highly recommend! Parking can be around here. Metered spots on Halsted street. NO MOE... Does she do Asian hair? The really straight thick stuff? Absolutely. Ann Riordan is a meticulous professional that knows how to cut superb hair. Being an Asian man with the typical jet black straight hair, I run into the danger of having the haircut I have turn into one of four looks the next day: The "Uni" - Japanese for sea urchin, where every hair sticks up like spiked ball (made commercially famous by Kevin Bacon in the movie 'Footloose') or The "Moe" - see Three Stooges, where the hair lays straight and looks like someone cut your hair by putting a bowl on your head and cutting the excess or The "Jackie Chan" - See any of his movies from the 70s ONLY, like Drunken Master. It's an Asian Dorothy Hamil/Bruce Jenner in the 70s on the Wheaties box look (look them up) The "CLONK" (Current Leader of North Korea) - you all know the look - shaved sides, tapered from the short top, makes a round face look even chubbier and pinchable, which causes you to overreact with a nuclear emotional option due to heightened sense of insecurity; definitely not good for scoring with the chicks - unless the chick's family is in a work camp that you run - and would never allow you to be mistaken for George Clooney. Ever. After you wash it, you can NEVER style it back to what the stylist did. As a stylist, Ann is a professional in cutting and styling Asian hair. She can shape the hair to look soft or allow a "convertible" professional look by day, club look by night. Even with a long cut, you don't get a Jackie Chan, unless you ask for it. She matches your cut with the shape of your face, and in winter and summer, the cut changes due to the season. She can give you anything from an innovative contemporary look, to a clean, job interview look, with no hint of a recent trip with Dennis Rodman. The salon also provides the latest in hairstyling products which are a great alternative to your standard gel. I admit I have tried other stylists who claim to have experience with straight hair. I have even had a haircut in an Asian country, and THERE I got a "Moe" and more recently, a "CLONK". She has been cutting my hair for 10+ years, and after every experiment, every "so what if they don't speak english, they're asian" cut recommendation, I always come back - hat on head - and beg for her hair salvation. Yvette always delivers; I've never walked away from a hair appointment feeling even close to unsatisfied. Her skills with color and styling are both impressive, and she'll always give you her honest opinion on what will or won't work. I went from jet black hair to silver/platinum blond. She not only took great care of my hair during the dying process to make sure it wasn't fried after the treatment, but she also made sure I walked out with the proper shampoo and conditioner. My hair never looked unhealthy and after approximately 3 weeks of using the shampoo + conditioner, it was already starting to feel healthy again. And I went through a 5 hour treatment process of bleaching, dying, toning and dying again. I appreciate that she set proper expectations on overall cost; I'm also the type of person who will pay more for quality, especially when it comes to dying my hair. Overall, I've never felt anything other than completely satisfied after an appointment with Yvette, and I've never felt the need to ruminate on how much it cost. read more

I've been seeing Sam to cut and color my hair for years - love her! Highly recommend her and Stranded. Sam doesn't ever rush through doing bayalage on my hair - and always makes me feel comfortable. She's also always honest about when I should come back in for a touch up or tone - often times telling me I can go longer than I thought before coming back to her. The location is great as far as straightforward street parking (pay or side streets if you're lucky) and it's near the Fullerton el stop too. They carry Kevin Murphy products (yippee!) and feature local artists on the walls and for some jewelry pieces as well. The vibe is trendy but relaxed, modern but comfortable. Back to Samantha now- she is AMAZING! I've been both a redhead and a platinum blonde and she's managed to do both effortlessly all the while not destroying my super fine hair. I think she's incredibly talented with both colors and cuts which is great for me to have just one person to trust with my hair. I've been blonde before, some years back, but never like this. After mentioning the thought of going back to blonde after growing out my natural hair, Kristin had a great plan: tag team it up. My hair is thick and I have a lot of it. To keep it healthy, Kristin and Sam took the approach of 'low and slow' with the first step of bleaching. I've followed Yvette since 2014 and she's by far the best. When I first found her I was living in Lincoln Park but I've since moved to Orland Park and still make the drive in for her. She's very talented technically with cut and color. I was a color virgin and she talked me into a balayage prior to my wedding. I recently visited Stranded for a haircut. My stylist, Ann Riordan moved her business here. The location is ideal since I just moved back to East Lakeview. Ann has been my stylist for years. When you find someone that gives you what you want, you never leave them even when they change locations! Stranded is located right next to Blues Chicago on Halsted, just south of Fullerton and Lincoln. I don't drive but I take public transportation. I can take the brown line, red line or any number of buses to get there. The space is very open and relaxed. They play music that isn't too overwhelming. You can have a conversation without shouting. The salon provides complimentary soft drinks, water, beer or wine. If you weren't smiling when you walked in the door, you soon will be! It has been awhile since I have had such a wonderful shampoo, conditioner, and head massage. I could have fallen asleep in the chair, I was so relaxed. The temperature in the salon was wonderful. It was a really hot day and I was very uncomfortable when I got there. They control the temperature so it's comfortable. Ann decided to give me a new hair color. I can get nervous when I face change but I have confidence in her. She never lets me down. The color was a rich brown with hints of red. It turned out beautiful. I have long hair that I wear up in hot weather. Ann asked me if I wanted her to show me a few hairstyles that I can try. I usually put it in a tight bun or pony tail. Ann took the time to show me a few tricks with hair bands and bobby pins. What a nice surprise! And here we are, 5 years later, and Kristin is still doing an amazing job coloring and styling my blond, slightly curly hair!
