So nice we had to come twice! My wife and I visited Maui on our honeymoon and saw so many great reviews about sale Pepe so we decided to try it out. We got a reservation on the 2nd night of our trip and loved it so much that we came back on the 3rd night lol. Here's what we ordered: Focaccia (2x): May be one of our most favorite appetizer breads we've ever had, so delicious and warm with just the right amount of salt on top. The view of the puffed up focaccia is a reason to order in itself. Pair with the Caprese stracciatella! Caprese stracciatella (2x): A different take on traditional Caprese but was delicious, the mozzarella curds worked so well with the tomatoes. Everything was fresh and we loved using as a dip with the foacaccia. Calabrese piccante (1x): I ordered this the first night and it was great! The dough that they use is a game changer and would recommend any of their pizzas simply to try their dough. It is very close to the focaccia and we highly recommend. The Calabrese is pretty spicy, just a heads up. Alfredo tagliatelle (1x): *not pictured* My wife ordered this the first night but was not a huge fan. The Alfredo was more buttery than creamy and just wasn't super memorable. Bufala margherita (1x): My wife ordered this the second night and loved it! The dough was amazing and the buffalo cheese made such a difference. She did not that it could have used a pinch of salt on top but otherwise was delicious Lasagna (1x): I almost didn't order this the second night because I was going to split a pizza but thought to myself, "When in Rome.." This truly was one of the best lasagnas I've ever had, I'm so glad I changed my mind and got it. The pasta was fresh with the cheese and beef. It was so good! Would recommend to anyone and everyone who comes, my favorite dish out of all of them. Overall, a great vibe and great food. We enjoyed our dinner here. Staff was very nice and checked on us a few times during the meal. We started off sharing 2 salads - kale and a Romaine. Both were delicious but I liked the kale the best. The entrees were: Spicy sausage, mushrooms, provolone pizza. It arrived scorched on a couple edges and was crunchy, thin crusted. Just delicious. Beef ragu pasta - a lovely savory dish with great flavor. Lasagna - heavily covered in tomato sauce but our kid liked it. Gnocchi - the cheese sauce was divine. The pasta was on the heavier side than pillowy and fluffy ones I've had before. But the sauce over it really helped the dish. The cost of the meal can be a bit pricier than your casual family Italian restaurant but it's along the lines of what you'd pay at a good restaurant in a big city. We ordered 2 sodas and a beer. The local beer tasted mire bitter to me. I tried the local ginger beer. It was less gingery tasting than others and I've tried quite a few brands. Expect a health surcharge on your bill. There's a gender neutral, single bathroom. It's likely more popular since winning the 2026 James Beard best chef in the West-Pacific NW award. Reservation, and free street parking, with a little wait outside on the street until we were seated, on a table that welcomed our party by name on the paper tablecloth. Nice touch. Our server Katie was excellent throughout the evening, chatty but quick, informative and helpful, making sure we had everything we needed and that we were happy. They were short staffed (most restaurants in Lahaina are now) and didn't have a bartender that night, so no cocktails, but luckily one of the mocktails came bottled so hubby enjoyed his Phony Negroni, while I shared a bottle of the Slovenian Giocato Pinot Grigio with honey tones that complimented the meal nicely, and was an unusual addition to their wine menu. What did we eat you ask? Salumi e Formaggi - We chose the Mortadella and Fontina which came with pickled tomatoes and grapes (oh so moreish). The Mortadella with pistachio wasn't as tasty as we expected but the cheese was nutty and excellent, and the little crackers accompanying them had a pleasant aniseed flavour. A smaller size charcuterie plate for 2 for $25 but everything is imported hence the price. Calabrese Piccante Pizza - their pizzas are cooked in a pizza oven right in front of you and they smell heavenly. Crunchy, crisp base, a really fresh tomato sauce (simple but amazing) with a bite to it, and thin layers of Calabrese salami and just a touch of char on the crust. Very tasty Strozzapreti con Kale e Salsiccia - a special of the day, twisted pasta with a rich sauce of cooked kale and pork sausage. Very savoury and a good portion. (Portions are more Italian than American sized here) Acciughe Pizza - another special, and my fave, fresh anchovy pizza with fresh tomato sauce. Every slice had a fillet of anchovy on it and it was delicious! We ordered the insalata verde salad to split and it was really good. We then ordered the rigatoni con speck and the Quattro pizza and shared both of those as well. Anthony from Espresso Mafia sung the praises of Sale Pepe, singling out the attention to detail, scratch made everything (nearly), sourcing from Italy, and using Italian standards. We had a glitch with online reservations, putting our contact info in to be notified of availability and later found we were booked for a late evening time, which entailed a $25 cancelation fee per person....when we didn't book a reservation to begin with. I called and left a message requesting a callback and wasn't called. We took a chance and showed up around 5:45 pm. We told them what happened and they got us in within 10 minutes. Good customer service, things happen. The restaurant is located in a business park of service and supply businesses. However their signage, seating, and interior touches helped the vibe get there. Grace was our server, she did well and was easy to communicate with and attentive. Between all of us we had an arugula salad, wine, a rigatoni dish, bolognese, and finished with tiramisu. All food was fresh and good quality. One thing we noticed a half an hour later or so, was no bloat and no crash by any of us. That immediately told us the raw ingredient sourcing was legit, as all of us have experienced this with most European food sourcing vs US sourcing, especially wheat products. Well done. I loved Qiana and Michele's story of resilience, being the first restaurant to open after the 2023 fires, and I expected my family and I to have a wonderful experience for dinner last night. But we didn't. And it was due to logistical decisions made by staff. Let me explain... We had a 7:15pm reservation but arrived to a large crowd waiting out front and no one at the hostess stand. We were able to check in closer to 7:30. I felt assured when Qiana politely told an impatient patron that she had to seat those with reservations first. But that party of four, and others, were seated before us. After 40+ minutes waiting, Qiana apologized for a table that was lingering and asked if we wanted to wait for a table upstairs or be seated on the crowded lanai (with several young children) or wait a bit for a table upstairs. I chose upstairs. We waited for that lingering party to depart; no one left. Then 15-20 minutes later, we were seated upstairs. That was one hour after our reservation at 8:15pm. The logistical decisions and bad luck continued because there was a large party of ~10 also seated upstairs and they took priority over us. Our entrees arrived 45 minutes later (9pm by now). By this time, my family was very hungry and a little mad at the situation. I felt disrespected for the circumstances. The staff was nice, but actions were speaking louder than words. I usually rave about food in my reviews, but the long wait and how situations were handled (there were more I'm not describing) colored our special evening out and how the bites were received. What a gem in Maui! We arrived after 8 pm on a weekday without a reservation in September. After a short wait, we were seated at the bar. Service was excellent. The hostess clearly prioritized reservations (and seems to held tables for late arrivals), so I'd definitely recommend booking ahead. Sadly, the original was lost in the Lahaina fire but determination and will led the owners to reopen in a new location up the hill from their original. Where is the check in stand!? This was my first question, and clearly a lot of other people's as well. I think what made this the most difficult was that the person checking people in was not at the podium and it was weird that you have to walk up the ramp and stand basically right in front of someone's table to check in. I think this falls down to the line that this is clearly a business complex and they made do. I recommend making a reservation as it can get busy, but you can also select where you want to sit. The food was fantastic, and it all comes down to the ingredients. The import their flower and another ingredients directly from Italy and you can tell the difference. My heart is so full! Sale Pepe is back after their previous location burnt down in the Lahaina fires and they are better than ever. The owners have truly outdone themselves. Had the best lasagna of my life (don't tell my mother). The menu changes monthly and all of their ingredients are straight from Italy. The restaurant was beautifully designed and I love the Lahaina strong sentiment upstairs. If you haven't checked out Sale Pepe's new location- this is your sign!!! read more
