I loved Qiana and Michele's story of resilience, being the first restaurant to open after the 2023 fires, and I expected my family and I to have a wonderful experience for dinner last night. But we didn't. And it was due to logistical decisions made by staff. Let me explain... We had a 7:15pm reservation but arrived to a large crowd waiting out front and no one at the hostess stand. We were able to check in closer to 7:30. I felt assured when Qiana politely told an impatient patron that she had to seat those with reservations first. But that party of four, and others, were seated before us. After 40+ minutes waiting, Qiana apologized for a table that was lingering and asked if we wanted to wait for a table upstairs or be seated on the crowded lanai (with several young children) or wait a bit for a table upstairs. I chose upstairs. We waited for that lingering party to depart; no one left. Then 15-20 minutes later, we were seated upstairs. That was one hour after our reservation at 8:15pm. The logistical decisions and bad luck continued because there was a large party of ~10 also seated upstairs and they took priority over us. Our entrees arrived 45 minutes later (9pm by now). By this time, my family was very hungry and a little mad at the situation. I felt disrespected for the circumstances. The staff was nice, but actions were speaking louder than words. I usually rave about food in my reviews, but the long wait and how situations were handled (there were more I'm not describing) colored our special evening out and how the bites were received. We heard great things about this restaurant so we decided to try it out. Make sure you have a reservation or you probably won't get a table. We ordered the insalata verde salad to split and it was really good. We then ordered the rigatoni con speck and the Quattro pizza and shared both of those as well. The food was delicious and very flavorful. Our server, Kate, was very knowledgeable when it came to what wine to order based on the food we ordered. The hostess clearly prioritized reservations (and seems to held tables for late arrivals), so I'd definitely recommend booking ahead. We discovered this Maui treasure earlier this year. Sadly, the original was lost in the Lahaina fire but determination and will led the owners to reopen in a new location up the hill from their original. Everything served here is either from Maui or Italy. The owners are truly engaged with their customers and our server (Katie) was attentive, knowledgeable about the food and wine and very friendly. She is a treasure! The puffy dough was amazing. Very light puff pizza dough with olive oil. Light, flavorful and delicious. The pizzas are Neapolitan and I've never had a better one, even in Italy. This is by far our favorite restaurant on the west side of Maui. I saw Sale Pepe pop up in my feed, but it was rarely mentioned in my Maui Facebook groups. The menu looked good so we decided to try it. We went thinking that we were going to pick up a couple of pizzas and head back to our resort after a long day of sight seeing. However, we stayed for what felt like an intimate home cooked Italian dinner. Everything was so delicious we decided to make a second trip back before we left the island. The food is superb. Where is the check in stand!? This was my first question, and clearly a lot of other people's as well. I think what made this the most difficult was that the person checking people in was not at the podium and it was weird that you have to walk up the ramp and stand basically right in front of someone's table to check in. I think this falls down to the line that this is clearly a business complex and they made do. I recommend making a reservation as it can get busy, but you can also select where you want to sit. The food was fantastic, and it all comes down to the ingredients. The import their flower and another ingredients directly from Italy and you can tell the difference. It was a bit crowded on the patio but not too bad. Our server was excellent. She brought new place settings between courses and paced the food well. The food was excellent. The bartender was prioritizing everybody's drink order instead of our food order. After we received our food maybe 70min in, the bartender kept asking if we needed anything else multiple times. Sale Pepe is hands down my favorite restaurant in Maui. Their journey has been incredible, especially after the tragic Lahaina fires in 2023 caused them to lose their original location. When I heard the news that they successfully reopened in March 2025 at a new Lahaina spot, I was so happy for them. I finally had the chance to visit their new home this past week and I can confirm it is just as good as it has always been. It is one of the places I always make sure we visit when we are on the island. We started our meal with the Ricotta Montata, and it was absolutely delicious. I could have used a little more bread with it, but we ended up saving the remaining whipped ricotta to enjoy with our main courses. It is probably a good thing we didn't have more bread because we were so incredibly full by the end of the night. For my entree, I ordered the Mafalde con Guanciale di Manzo. It was very good. I really loved the unique texture of the pasta. I always enjoy trying pasta shapes you do not typically find, and these noodles were really cool. My husband got the Lasagna, which is definitely a classic staple on their menu, and he loved it. We finished the meal with two desserts: the classic Tiramisu and the Tiramisu Gelato. The traditional Tiramisu was good, but the Tiramisu Gelato was truly out of this world. You absolutely must try it if it's an option. Overall, this is a definite must-visit on Maui. Overall, I have mixed emotions with my visit at Sale Pepe. First our waiter, Jason was not the best. I noticed he treated other tables with much more enthusiasm and kindness, but when he approached us, it was short and he even said "do you need me to repeat my spiel or did you overhear me with the other table." I found this rude and kind of disrespectful. I was shocked and he eventually gave us the rundown of everything because we weren't focused on his conversations with other guests. He then didn't really give us the attention he was giving other tables and we spent quite a long time in the restaurant. I honestly felt a little discriminated against. There was some good dishes and some not. The polpette (meatballs) tasted good but were lukewarm. And the Speck pasta with saffron was incredible. The flavor, portion and presentation was perfect. The guanciale pasta was overcooked. The type of pasta they used typically isn't my favorite in a dish like this. Another positive was the hostess who was welcoming and very professional. This place is settled in a food court and the pizza is NY style (thicker fluffy crust). We got 2- NY squares with pepperoni and mushroom and grabbed a smoothie from Choice Health across the way for a lighter (but filling) meal. Took the food to-go and had a nice sunset dinner on the front patio of our hotel. 3RD VISIT we went back to the restaurant bc we needed more of that rigatoni pasta and also wanted to try the pizza with mortadella and pistachio. Got there 15mins ahead our reservation time but they made ready our table and sat us quickly. We sat in the lanai and the cute touch was "happy anniversary Rizkalla's" in Italian on the butcher paper spread over the table. This is the kind of service I love. It gave my Egyptian husband some nostalgia with some foods he grew up with (ie mortadella with rumi cheese and pita). Jamie, our server, and the gal at the reception were very hospitable. 4TH VISIT will be tomorrow (our last dinner on the island before we head back to LA)... if you have never been to Los Angeles then you have no idea how hard it is to please/impress people from LA with cuisine. LA is saturated with amazing food, so when we travel we often find our meals anticlimactic, but Sale Pepe does NOT fall into that category. They are amazing and we will gladly give this establishment our money 4x in our week in Maui. Separately, I heard several employees say to some locals "thanks for popping in, I know this isn't the same as our last spot, but we did the best we could here to make a fresh start." So sad to hear that their first location must have been lost in the Lahaina fire. I never saw the previous restaurant, but I think this new location is stylish and quaint.
