I happened upon Salata looking for some food after shopping at IKEA. I was so excited when I saw the storefront (which is in the center across the street from IKEA) because I have wanted to try it but, I never find myself in this neck of the woods. The parking can be hit or miss because there is a ton of stores packed in the strip mall so, bring your patience. Walking in I noticed they have a large side patio with bistro tables for the warmer seasons. When you open the door the smell of fresh cut vegetables is all that you can notice and this was promising. I thoroughly enjoy salad buffets of all kinds but, I find the quality and freshness of the ingredients usually to be lacking. We were warmly greeted by the lady behind the counter and when I told her that it was our first time there, she gladly explained how it works. You can choose a salad or a wrap and I chose a large salad because the price difference was only $1.00 from the small to the large. It seemed like a no brainer. I chose romaine hearts with black olives, sprouts, mixed shredded cheese, bleu cheese, onions, egg, cucumbers, chipotle chicken, chipotle ranch and pesto bread. They had two other options for bread as well and you could also accompany your salad with soup. There isn't a limit to the number of vegetable toppings that you can pick and they aren't stingy with the toppings. They only have tea and lemonade as "fountain" beverages but you can get bottled coke, topo chico, etc. for the same price of $2.00. They will let you sample the dressings and the different meats if you are unsure what you would like. The toppings tasted like they were just sliced as we were walking in; that is how fresh they were. The dressing was creamy and had a great kick of spice that didn't overpower the flavor. They also toast your choice of bread and toss the salad with tongs at the end. For me this is awesome because mixing a salad can be frustrating to try to get the dressing fully mixed over the whole thing evenly. Another bonus is the protein toppings are cold. I can't tell you how many times I go to a salad place and the protein is placed hot on top of a cold salad. A big no no for me! We moved through the line quickly and the place was pretty busy. The service was impeccable. The girl who helped us was knowledgeable, friendly, happy to be at work and I watched her interact with customers on a higher level than most service industry employees. She even took the time to chat/play with him. I hope this place takes off and they open more locations preferably closer to my house! read more

Came in at about 7:15pm on a Tuesday night. I already had a small snack earlier in the day so I wasn't too hungry. I figured I would try something healthy or relatively healthy tonight. Upon entering there were lots of people in Salata, but it wasn't too crowded. There was a narrow divider guiding me to the front of the line. The counter was very long. An employee greeted me at the start of the line and explained the process to me since it was my first time there. I basically got a small or medium bowl and could get as many toppings as I wanted. Meat was extra. I got a spring mix, beets, jicama, cucumber, red onion, green olives, croutons, chopped egg, bacon, and honey mustard dressing. I had no idea how it was taste, but I liked those ingredients do I decided to go with it. The salad was pretty good and had the right amount of dressing. I suppose I could be a salad chef now haha. I'll defintely come by here again if I'm in the area and want a healthy meal. read more

I am SO excited that Salata has moved into the Austin area! Ordering is similar to Chipotle or Freebirds, choose your ingredients as you walk down a line. The staff is friendly and since the space is new, it still feels very clean. The only complaint I have is how much extra you are charged when ordering a non-meat protein. One small scoop of Quinoa is an extra $2 - for a Veggie Salad that is already costing $8, the tiny scoop that they added in was just not worth the extra money. Plus, the staff did not mention that the Quinoa was extra, so I was a bit surprised at the extra charge (I figured that the Quinoa was considered part of the meat-free Veggie Salad option on their menu). I love everything about this place! From the "hellos" at the door to the "goodbyes" when my friend and I leave. We go every Tuesday during her break at ACC, and they always remember us! It's nice being recognized, and I don't feel so bad being seen so many times since it's a salad place ;). The portions and pricing are great! I get out of there with a small salad (sometimes a wrap), bread and a drink for $11. It's great. Fresh eating, friendly people, and David, the general manager seems like he genuinely cares about the service, food and atmosphere that he is in charge of. I am not a huge salad fan, so I did not think I was going to like this place as much as I did. They had 4 different types of salad you could choose from and every topping imaginable. Love this place! It is a salad bar dream. Veggies are always fresh and there is an abundance of options. Choose your greens and then move on to vegetables, seasonal fruit, protein toppings, and more. You can make a small or large salad, or a wrap. Personally, I think the small salad is big enough and they never skimp on the items you ask for. They have dark greens like spring mix and romaine, amazing vegetable and fruit choices, their protein options include three different types of seasoned chicken, salmon, seafood mix, and more. They also have nuts, croutons, avocados, and artichoke hearts to top with. Don't leave without trying their soup! I have tried both the tomato and broccoli and they hit the spot. Their iced teas are also great. You have a few more options than most places and there's always some being freshly brewed. Lastly (and the best part) they give a teacher and military discount!! Step in, choose your bowl size, how you want your salad, lettuce type and then everything you could possibly want in it. Not sure about the dressings? Ask to taste them! I'm only giving this place stars because the staff who helped me was extremely nice! The place was beyond dirty. The floors were sticky, there was still dirty salad bowls sitting on top of the trash that looked like they had been sitting there for hours. There was also so many gnats flying around the drink dispensers. This was honestly the first Salata I've been to that has looked like this so I had to leave a review. Usually, most Salata locations I've been to are properly cleaned! Even the lettuce selection was very scarce and empty. There was also left over pieces of food in between the food selections I was just so in shocked to see Salata like this. I visited Salata by the outlet mall in Round Rock recently with a friend. I am in love. Really. If you love salad. This is nirvana! Basically its a salad cafeteria. Pick what you want, prices are posted clearly, and at the end of the line pay for what you chose. I liked the quality of the items I chose, and that the pricing was straight forward. IF you want bread they have it, but it's easy to avoid as well. Do note that they do have nuts and peanuts on the line and in at least one dressing. Enjoyed sitting in the patio area, the freeway noise is the only drawback. Looking forward to visiting Salata again soon. read more

I was thinking this was a salad buffet, it is not. They determine how much of the salad and toppings you can get. You can ask for more and more, but eventually it is like when you ask your grandpa for a little more and he just gives a drop or a crumb and thinks that is funny, the people in line behind you start to grumble and just want you to get out of their way. Who knew that salad eaters were so grumpy? Anyway, I asked for the large salad and started requesting my toppings. Literally they sprinkled just a tiny amount of what I asked for, it was like adding one drop of milk to a bowl of cereal- really? I am not going to even be able to taste that it is so small. So I had to ask for more each time which really irritated some in line behind me. Maybe they need to eat some meat sometime in order to no be so irritable? I don't know but I was bothering someone.... I had my toppings added a little at a time, etc and got to the dressings- there was no Bleu Cheese. Ok, I had come to terms with "grandpa" telling me how much of what I could have on my salad, but when a salad place does not have Bleu Cheese dressing there is something wrong. They had several vinaigrette's, multiple flavors of Ranch (really,there can be only one) and some other stuff. I asked if there was any Bleu Cheese and they said "no, we don't have that, would like ranch instead?" Really? Are you kidding me? That is like asking one of the angry vegans behind me to substitute chicken for tofu. Luckily I had a coupon for BOGO I had held onto waiting to take my wife here. She liked her salad just fine. She got the small bowl with chicken, I opted for no protein because I didn't want to pay and extra $2 plus tax on a couple of bits of chicken that would equate to about $40 per lb in the store. Ridiculous. My bill was $11, so my wife had a small salad for $11. Luckily my dry salad (because they did not include on of the most popular dressings every as an item) was free. We had water to drink. It comes with a piece of bread too. If you are looking for a good salad bar at a reasonable price then go to Jason's Deli or Souper Salad. Salata is a really fantastic idea - an old buffet idea made better and I really liked it. I came in here with my Mom a few days ago, and this was our first visit. We got big bowls and went through the line adding exactly what we wanted to our salads. Most things, (with a few minor exceptions) were incredibly fresh. The possibilities here are numerous just for salads alone! All of the staff was super friendly and helpful from getting us through the line fast, and adding in an extra person when the line got busy, plus we saw several staff members keeping the dining room clean and picking up bowls when people were done and asking them how their meals were - fantastic! On a hot summer day, (as it was when we came in) this was the perfect option. I also liked that they had tons of types of tea available. Salata is a fantastic idea in theory that produces fantastic food in reality; we went here an hour from closing time and the service was just as friendly and the salad was just as spectacular as it would be any other time of the day, I bet. Being from California, where there are few locations, I was presently surprised at how novel this restaurant was. With four salad choices, tens of toppings, free bread sections and extra protein choices, my salad came out amazing and I was so happy at the value of it (small salads for $7 and a regular for $1 more). Going down the line, every employee was friendly and accommodated any extra requests. Salata was a great choice for my dinner and I hope I get to come here again. read more

Flavor and selection options are good. The first time I went was a 5 star experience. Unfortunately the second time I went was almost walk out the door and don't come back....... Obviously the price for a salad is high so we wait for a coupon. Got a coupon buy one salad get another salad free. We got three adult salads and one child salad. They applied the coupon to the child salad. Wife asked the teller what was going on. The teller said it was applied to the cheapest salad. In that case we could have gotten 4 adult salads or rang it up separate applying the coupon to two of the adult salads.... Either way would have gotten us the discount, but ordering as a family and not wanting to waste food would not get us the full discount. Whatever, fine, just pay. I'm already upset because of what happened in line. In line ordering an adult salad. I let them know what toppings I would like. I like most so I don't ask for extra of any one topping. Not asking for extra except for the dressing, 3 scoops please. "Uh, that will be an extra dollar". I didn't ask for extra anything, I don't want to pay an extra dollar, I just want 3 scoops of dressing. "With the dollar I could put it on the side". Last time you guys didn't charge me a dollar. I want three scoops, not on the side but on the salad. The young man hesitated and put two and a half. Getting to the toaster area he tries to pass me off without offering bacon bits. Bacon bits please? I notice the hesitation. Then of course the coupon situation above. Screw it. The dressing I like there is excellent but the service and the upcharges got me very upset. As I write I just changed my star rating from 2 to 1. Hoping the one star gets some attention. This is absolutely not fair to the first crew who was there making the salads, smiling at customers and making it pleasant. I may try to go back in a couple months asking for my usual. This was my concept back in California that I was going to try and open up in La Palma but could not get enough funds to start it. So, it was very nice to see a similar store open up and actually experience it. I remember Fresh Choice was good while it was open but for the last several years, the Austin area has been without a reliable salad joint (at least from what I knew). I recommend this place completely. Great minds think alike and whoever started Salata had the same vision. It's high quality salad with a large variety of unlimited toppings. They have delicious protein options for a fair price, too. They make the salads for you behind a sneeze guard but are more than happy to pile them on how you like it. The quantity and price makes this an outstanding value, as well! My family frequents at salad bars when in California and it was very refreshing to see that there is a great place here in Round Rock. Our first time today and we will be back, for sure. I didn't really care for the General Manager, though. He seemed annoyed that I was ordering salads for my entire family because he had to make those kid's salad boxes by hand. The female salad chef was very pleasant, though. Nothing really bothered me to a significant degree and I will still stand strongly with my five stars. High quality veggies and more topping choices than most places for a very reasonable price. Salata is my favorite salad bar in the Round Rock area. I love that you get to pick every ingredient for your salad from the wide variety of fabulous dressing to the sweet, fresh fruit and unique toppings such as crab, salmon and tofu (yes, tofu!), down to the greens options. They have a large variety of toppings for your salad. I like to add in sweet red grapes and tasty artichoke ($1 extra), chopped egg, along with grilled chicken, and anything else that will make my salad absolutely delectable. The decor of the restaurant is basic, run-of-the-mill that you'd find in a lot of other small restaurants, i.e. purple-colored booths, basic tables, etc. The noise level is generally quiet on a typical weekday afternoon and usually not crowded. The restaurant does have large windows that brighten the inside of the place and a bar with seats along the windows, so you can eat your meal while enjoying the sights of the outdoors. They also have some outdoor seating, which is usable on a nice day. As for the price, Salata is on the more expensive side of the scale, with salads starting at $7 before add-ons, which include artichokes ($1), avocado ($1), and protein, which can range from $2-$4 depending on type. read more

A solid five-star act here. I don't give many, but it's because they even do the little things right. Here's a day in the life of a Salata patron: 1) Arrive. Be greeted in a friendly manner by someone who appears to enjoy their job. One might almost think that they get paid and treated fairly. Perhaps... 2) Order. There are a crap ton of options for salad lovers. Even obscure shit like jicama is available at the salad bar. Everything is fresh. And if they find a shabby piece of lettuce, they toss it out rather than give it to you. 3) Pay. It's fairly priced also. Not quite as expensive as a Whole Foods salad, but it's probably not organic and local either. Buuuut it ain't no bag o' salad either. Right in the middle (see my dissertation on tiny burgers). Drink selection is easy. Teas are tasty. 4) Eat. Nom nom nom nommy salad... Here's the kicker. There's someone hanging around to take your bowl for you when you're done most of the time, and the music volume is perfect. I can have conversations in between bites of kale and black olive. See? Since you aren't reading this to hear me bitch about not eating bread and pasta anymore, let's just do this: The good: All the items are very fresh. There are a wide assortment of toppings, including a mind blowing array of vegetables, fruits, nuts, dressings, etc. There are several kinds of chicken and seafood you can add for an upcharge. You can also get a wrap or a quesadilla if you have a kid with you who doesn't want a salad. All the salads I have had are delicious. This is probably the best salad bar experience I have ever had. The bad: It is still a salad bar. I won't hold it against them that I am just not a salad eater. I will however deduct a star for the following: The price is a bit much, even if the salad is huge and has shrimp in it. The drink options are limited. There is no soda fountain, so if you want a Diet Coke, you will have to get it from the open air cooler. The sodas inside are not very cold. They have an ice machine, but it sucks. Pro-Tips: Do not sign up for their text alerts. They almost never have any special offers, just sales pitches. I have tried unsubscribing, but to no avail. I guess I will block them and be done with it. They ain't open on Sundays... and somehow I always want to come here on a Sunday Lunch is crazy busy, but dinner is totally dead. Once you get up to the buffet, you choose a salad or a wrap and have endless choices, 152 choices to be exact! Strawberries, almonds, nuts, mushrooms, apples, sun dried tomatoes, cilantro, many many more. Every bite was delicious!! Even the rasberry lemonade was good! Love this place. Fresh, healthy ingredients, generously portioned, friendly service. Some people complain about the cost. You can get cheaper meals out, but they'll be made of crap ingredients. The way I look at it is this: There's no way I could stock this variety of fresh ingredients at home, in quantities to make a great salad, and keep them fresh. There are other salad bars around, but they don't have nearly as many ingredient choices, and you'd best hope the kid in front of you didn't grab a handful of that crappy lettuce right after picking his nose.
