After an unfortunate experience at Benja's my group of 6 (plus two babies) arrived here for dinner on a Thursday shortly before 6:00pm. We were informed of a wait of about 45 minutes, which ended up being closer to 30 - yay! We were seated in an alcove near the sushi bar that featured two table tops with benches, and sliding rice paper doors. It was really perfect, and we actually closed the doors for part of the evening.
I started with the coconut chicken soup. It was fine, but there was a flavor in the broth that I didn't quite enjoy, though I couldn't put my finger on what it was. The soup was mostly just large pieces of shredded chicken, and I would have enjoyed more vegetables, as well as a noticeable amount of kaffir lime leaves. For my main I had the steak salad, which was essentially a pile of pieces of steak with LOTS of red onions and mint in a soy based sauce with lettuce to wrap it in. As an entrée it wasn't huge, but it was a good size for me. For anyone who does not have an unnatural love of onions like I do, the amount included is a bit ridiculous, so just consider that a warning. I shared the tempura vegetables, which were excellent. The veggies were just tender enough, and the breading was crispy and served very hot. I'd consider this a must order item.
I also tried the pad thai, which was average, though good, and some of the sushi, which leaned toward the Americanized variety featuring a majority of deep fried rolls (though they do have some that is more traditional, as well as nigiri and sashimi). That's just not my style, but my sisters, who are big fans of that type of sushi, thought they were great, so that's a bit of a recommendation there if you're a fan too. I also had a bite of the tempura bananas and cheesecake, both of which were fairly tasty, though I can't quite relate to the desire to deep-fry everything. All in all the food was average to good.
So why 5 stars? Service was simply exemplary. Our waitress, Mindy, was a total sweetheart, as was one of the managers, Jean, who checked in on us a few times. We were most certainly a group of hangry ladies and babies by the time we ordered, but Mindy was very patient and kind. My sister in law is the pickiest eater in existence, and she ordered two sushi rolls which included tobiko, but neglected to request it be left off. When it arrived she realized her mistake, and they made her new rolls immediately and quickly, without a bit of attitude. They even left the original rolls for other members of our party to try. We were celebrating a birthday, and Mindy changed the dessert normally offered to what my sister wanted, and checked back every couple minutes once it was ready to be served as the birthday girl had a bit of an emergency. And their birthday candle is the coolest EVER. It's a flower, and when you light it the flame transfers to six leaves, then it opens AND plays the birthday song. Really!
So for sushi/hibachi/Thai in the St. George area where your options are rather limited, this is your best bet. When we called ahead they would not take reservations for that same night as they were already busy, but I think they would take them for future dates. They were PACKED, and it only got busier as the night went on, so if you can secure reservations I'd highly recommend it, or else arrive quite some time prior to dinner to avoid a wait. read more
