Had a taste for Thai and headed out in search of a new restaurant. Drove around and found this restaurant tucked in the side of a strip mall. We were greeted and seated by a nice man. The menu options were a plenty, I am a vegetarian, so most things can be made without meat proteins. I ordered basically a veggie stir-fry, with extra veggies. We wanted to try a new place in Vancouver and Pho sounded good. Reviews here were good so here we are. Asian families are eating here which is a good sign. Place is dated but clean. Pho was traditional as it can get, the broth tasty, noodles cooked right, we has lean eye round; the large is only $7.50. Asian beers only $3.00. Pleasant staff. Used to live next to this place and went weekly. Now it's about 20 min away so it's a treat to get to go these days. I LOVE the staff!! It took a cpl years as they are very standoffish, but when you come like family, you really feel like family walking in. When my son was little, one of the kitchen ladies would come out every time we came to talk to him. They're food is the best! The beef fried rice is my favorite. It's such a simple dish, but the flavor of theirs is unmatchable. I only wish they did bahn mi :/ but other than that, so good every time! :) read more

I had a taste for some Pho while on the west coast and Saigon Restaurant delivered. I started with some pork and shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce. For my lunch, I did my best to tackle the pho-nam (steak shank). All of their pho add ins were fresh i.e. cilantro, basil, jalapeño, and a wedge of lime. The broth and noodles hit the spot. The beef broth was something I would have taken home as leftovers had I not been traveling. The green and white onions included were still crisp and aided in the beef broth flavor. I've been coming to Saigon Rest. for many years, and my meals have always been great. The Special Pho is a favorite, consistent, flavorful and even the small is a full meal. Comes served with the usual condiments. Another favorite is the Hot/Sour Bean Curd soup, very spicy and always very good. You won't get much ambiance out of the place, it's in a dumpy strip mall across the street from Dick Hannah Honda (NE 4th Plain). But it's clean, the service is super (though typically they don't engage in any extra niceties, but they're always courteous). The Pho & soups are worth the drive from Portland. We visited at 8 pm. We were told to sit wherever we'd like. There was only one other couple was there, so I can't imagine this place getting super busy. The restaurant seemed clean and it has s nice feel to it. We ordered the first pho choice on the menu and a curry. Pho: 5 star. The meat was the most tender and flavorful meat I've ever had in pho. They included more add in options such as mint and cilantro on the side along with the usual bean sprouts and jalepeno. And there was more meat than other places I've been. 9.50 for a large, fairly priced Yellow curry with pork: 3 star. The curry itself was delicious. The vegetables had weird textures, the onion slices were very large, the rice was a bit dry, and sometimes you'd get a mouthful of spice as if it was stirred in all the way. Overall I enjoyed it, but not for the price of $13.50 Service: 2 star. As far as speed it was very fast which was great! But I've never met anyone who's energy was just so depressing. Our waiter looked like he wanted to hang himself. I really hope that's not the case, but I don't think he's in the right position. Our drinks weren't refilled until after we were done. Saigon was my favorite thai/Vietnamese place for a lot of years. But fairly recently they changed chefs and it hasn't been quite the same since. The pho is okay, they give a ton of veggies. The coconut soup was my favorite but last time I ordered it was just broth and chicken, they completely forgot the veggies. The pad Thai is a good portion. They just aren't in the glory years. One of Favorite restaurants in Vancouver. They have a clean facility with good service. The food is fantastic and flavorful. Very fair portions and Huge bowls of Pho. You can eat in or Order to go. If you are a newcomer, you can even ask the owners or the staffs here which dish is good. They are pretty honest and tell you which one not to try. Saigon was recommended by a friend. The fried rice with chicken was the plate I choose. The chicken was perfectly cooked, and had a glaze (I thought it was teriyaki, but not sure). The five of us that went, and there were no complaints, only compliments. I would definitely eat there again. In fact the servings were such that we all had leftovers, and therefore tomorrow's lunch The atmosphere is casual. The service was okay, but fell short expectations. I ordered the combo vermicelli bowl which was good and may be difficult to mess it up so kudos on that. I also ordered a vegetarian pho for my girl. Upon pick up service was whatever. 5 star AMAZING pho- hands down the best in the Vancouver/Portland area that I have had!! The broth is hot, strong, and very flavorful with a perfect medley of herbs and spices. The meat in the pho tai was lean and had a good flavor, and there was a lot of it and lots of noodles as well. They gave us lots of cilantro, basil, and bean sprouts, and peppers for garnishes as well. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated, and the waiters are also the owners it appears and are quieter but nice and the service is very fast. This is my new favorite spot for pho! Not much to look at but this hole-in-the-wall Pho spot is our family's favorite North of the river. The ambiance is quite a bit on the plain jane, slightly worn side, but this family run restaurant is a gem. The younger servers tend to be friendlier than the older ones, but their attention is prompt and helpful. Saigon makes the best fresh pork and tofu salad rolls we've found so far in the Couve. They are what we come here for. They are fresh and full of flavor, without too much mint. The #34 Pho is our go-to. A deep rich broth that hits the spot on these cold, rainy PNW days. read more

Bun Tom soup is really good. The texture of the noodles was not. They give you a lot of shrimp, so if you're a shrimp fan, this is definitely the dish the get. The Bun Bo Hue was very two dimensional and I was very under impressed, considering how good the Bun Tom was in comparison. read more

Went in for some Pho since it was a chilly rainy day. Found this place on Yelp so decided to give it a try. Service was quick and our Pho was delivered promptly. Good portion of meat and a tasty broth. No mint leaves were on the plate, but already inside the Pho. A good meal, and a decent atmosphere for a strip mall type place. What a strange, but ultimately enjoyable place to dine. First, the food here has been prepared and invented by some kind of Asian-cuisine genius. Its awkwardly translated menu is VERY extensive, and everything I have tried has been good if not amazing. Very authentic without being offensively foreign. The food here is unique and flavorful. Many menu items are surprisingly great, but the soup is amazing. Second, there are some problems that don't have anything to do with food. The decor and atmosphere... at best is functional and at worst, depressing. Unattractive tables and chairs, combined with boring, either barren or awkwardly decorated white walls, mixed with bad lighting. The whole place is rather uninviting and tinged with gloom. The main waiter I seem to have more often than not is this old man with a positively withering visage. His stony-eyed look of disapproval makes ordering or even asking for more water uncomfortable. Maybe he just has an unfortunate case of bitch-face, but yikes! The portions are weird, many items that come with rice, don't come with nearly enough. Unless you order several things, depending on your eating habits, there is a high chance you will go home wanting more. Or spend a small fortune filling yourself up. Unless you order soup! In which case, you will be faced with more soup than you ever wanted to eat in one sitting... it's amazing soup, but man! Good to eat here when you are feeling peckish but not ravenous, or when you are willing to purchase at least 2 main entrees a person. read more

For as much staff as they have in here you would think it would be better, however this is easily some of the worst service in the area. This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver. It's one of those places that you likely have driven past a bunch of times before noticing it's there, then realize it is and want to try it, but don't until quite awhile later. And then you are hooked and keep going back again and again and again. The menu is incredible. All of it that I've tried, and I've tried quite a few things. They have these spring roll things with a spicy peanut sauce that are just like heaven. I'd love to tell you some of the other things, but I don't know the names without looking or asking. The staff is friendly, and if you accidentally leave your cell phone there overnight and are freaking out the next day because you are waiting for an important call, they will gladly help you find it and give it back to you with a smile (not that I'd ever do something silly like that). Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Oh, and the prices? If you read my reviews, you know that I can be kind of cheap, and I've declared this place not only reasonable, but almost (not quite) a bargain considering how yummy it is. In the midst of my hunger, I stumbled on to this skinny strip mall, and figured that the hoards of people in the restaurant was a good sign. Considering my only other choice was Arby's or Wendy's, I figured I had nothing to lose. So here is that moral of the story section: never judge a book by its cover. I walked in to a rather basic interior, but a bustling environment with friendly staff. They seated me immediately, and I placed my order after viewing the Lunch Menu. I couldn't believe the prices! Only $6.95 for a bowl of rice noodle wonton soup bigger than the size of my face?! Cám n! The food was excellent, and I would highly recommend the Salad Rolls from the appetizer menu. Best Vietnamese food in Vancouver. This is the Vietnamese place where Vietnamese people eat. It's a well-hid family owned restaurant and a must-visit. Saigon is always clean and the food is very consistent. Today I got salad rolls which are truly awesome here. I recommend getting fish sauce to dip them in but the peanut sauce works too. I also recommend the bbq pork and shrimp on vermicelli noodles. That's my fave. I know the soups are also great. The servers have some language barrier but they are nice and smiley. They take care of you and you will be glad you gave this place a shot. I highly recommend it. 5stars for the food, 4stars overall. read more
