Pho Yeah! Unexpectedly coming down with a nasty cold, I knew one way for Seth to get better was getting him a hot bowl of pho. We had movie tickets for Cinetopia that night so not knowing what's good, what's not in Vancouver I reached out to Yelp for recommendations. Searching 'pho' in the app, Saigon Restaurant was the first highly rated restaurant listed. We dropped in on a Wednesday just after 6pm & were seated immediately. Service was just as quick with bringing menus, glasses of ice water, & taking our orders. We both ordered small bowls of pho ga ($6.95) but were mistakenly given the large size ($7.50). Our server noticed the error right away but assured us we would only be charged for smalls which we were. The soup was perfect to clear a cold out for just a little while. The broth was hot & full of all the right flavors, the chunks of white chicken were tender & juicy, & the portions were more than I could handle. The small order of salad rolls ($3.50) were very good. Even though there's only two rolls they're not small in size. They're large & neatly stuffed with sliced BBQ pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, lettuce, & vermicelli noodles. Great appetizer. A must try is their iced cafe sua da (Vietnamese coffee) for just $2.50. This is the cheapest I've seen it & it was fantastic. I wish I lived closer or Saigon Restaurant opened another location in SE PDX because I'd buy one every day. So good! The first time I came here I was in a hurry and didn't really pay attention to the service and food. Mistake, because I passed up the opportunity to really enjoy this awesome family-owned restaurant. Anyone who's read my reviews knows that I'd hurt someone (and badly) for a good bowl of Bun Bo Hue- a very delicious and *ahem* potent authentic Vietnamese dish. Because of the time involved in creating the dish, it can be on the top-end of a Vietnamese restaurant's menu (i.e., while most bowls of pho are roughly $6+, BBH typically runs $8.50+). I'm absolutely fine with this, because I have a special place in my heart (and stomach) for small restaurants like this. I came here during the beginning of my lunch break at work, meaning I had most of the time in the world to relax and enjoy my food. My waiter greeted me at the door, sat me and took my order quickly, and most pleasantly surprising, brought me my food lickity-split. Portions were great, and perfectly sized for me. And the best part was that the bowl was only $6.25, priced the same as all the other noodle dishes. I will definitely return to Saigon Restaurant the next time I'm craving Bun Bo Hue. Pho was traditional as it can get, the broth tasty, noodles cooked right, we has lean eye round; the large is only $7.50. Asian beers only $3.00. Pleasant staff. We visited at 8 pm. We were told to sit wherever we'd like. There was only one other couple was there, so I can't imagine this place getting super busy. The restaurant seemed clean and it has s nice feel to it. We ordered the first pho choice on the menu and a curry. Pho: 5 star. The meat was the most tender and flavorful meat I've ever had in pho. They included more add in options such as mint and cilantro on the side along with the usual bean sprouts and jalepeno. And there was more meat than other places I've been. 9.50 for a large, fairly priced Yellow curry with pork: 3 star. The curry itself was delicious. The vegetables had weird textures, the onion slices were very large, the rice was a bit dry, and sometimes you'd get a mouthful of spice as if it was stirred in all the way. Overall I enjoyed it, but not for the price of $13.50 Service: 2 star. As far as speed it was very fast which was great! But I've never met anyone who's energy was just so depressing. Our waiter looked like he wanted to hang himself. I really hope that's not the case, but I don't think he's in the right position. Our drinks weren't refilled until after we were done. Saigon was my favorite thai/Vietnamese place for a lot of years. But fairly recently they changed chefs and it hasn't been quite the same since. The pho is okay, they give a ton of veggies. The coconut soup was my favorite but last time I ordered it was just broth and chicken, they completely forgot the veggies. The pad Thai is a good portion. They just aren't in the glory years. I've been coming to Saigon Rest. for many years, and my meals have always been great. The Special Pho is a favorite, consistent, flavorful and even the small is a full meal. Comes served with the usual condiments. Another favorite is the Hot/Sour Bean Curd soup, very spicy and always very good. You won't get much ambiance out of the place, it's in a dumpy strip mall across the street from Dick Hannah Honda (NE 4th Plain). But it's clean, the service is super (though typically they don't engage in any extra niceties, but they're always courteous). The Pho & soups are worth the drive from Portland. Bun Tom soup is really good. The texture of the noodles was not. They give you a lot of shrimp, so if you're a shrimp fan, this is definitely the dish the get. The Bun Bo Hue was very two dimensional and I was very under impressed, considering how good the Bun Tom was in comparison. read more

I come here solely because all the dishes are above decent and have very large portion come with reasonable prices. If you are a newcomer, you can even ask the owners or the staffs here which dish is good. They are pretty honest and tell you which one not to try. Saigon was recommended by a friend. The fried rice with chicken was the plate I choose. The chicken was perfectly cooked, and had a glaze (I thought it was teriyaki, but not sure). The five of us that went, and there were no complaints, only compliments. I would definitely eat there again. In fact the servings were such that we all had leftovers, and therefore tomorrow's lunch The atmosphere is casual. The service was okay, but fell short expectations. 5 star AMAZING pho- hands down the best in the Vancouver/Portland area that I have had!! The broth is hot, strong, and very flavorful with a perfect medley of herbs and spices. The meat in the pho tai was lean and had a good flavor, and there was a lot of it and lots of noodles as well. They gave us lots of cilantro, basil, and bean sprouts, and peppers for garnishes as well. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated, and the waiters are also the owners it appears and are quieter but nice and the service is very fast. This is my new favorite spot for pho! Not sure if I came on an off day, but I called to place a pick up order. One size to go for pho apparently. I ordered the combo vermicelli bowl which was good and may be difficult to mess it up so kudos on that. I also ordered a vegetarian pho for my girl. Upon pick up service was whatever. I paid, said thanks and left. No thank you from any of the workers. That's cool. I got home to try the pho broth. The damn thing was suuuuuper stretched. I mean super. Not much to look at but this hole-in-the-wall Pho spot is our family's favorite North of the river. The ambiance is quite a bit on the plain jane, slightly worn side, but this family run restaurant is a gem. The younger servers tend to be friendlier than the older ones, but their attention is prompt and helpful. Saigon makes the best fresh pork and tofu salad rolls we've found so far in the Couve. They are what we come here for. They are fresh and full of flavor, without too much mint. The #34 Pho is our go-to. A deep rich broth that hits the spot on these cold, rainy PNW days. read more

So I have been here to this restaurant before and have had great food and this last visit I had great food, my review is the service and why I gave this place a 2 star. I always order Pho and thought I would order an appetizer and I thought the bo-bai rolls sounded good and I have never had those before so I googled them and sounded good. Well I get the appetizer and it's not put together, I guess I am supposed to put the appetizer together myself. I looked at my waiter and said to him "do I have to put this together?" And he said "yes". Ok I am up for something new but then he doesn't even tell me how to do this. There was these translucent round pieces of paper, the stuffing, peanut sauce, water. The waiter just walked away. I was a bit shocked and looked at everything and still didn't know what to do to I asked another waiter and graciously told me the step by step process and then my Pho shows up. If the waiter had just taken the time to tell me how I was to prepare this appetizer there would have been a much better review. Also they need to slow down on the delivery of food, I hadn't even taken my first bite of my appetizer and the Pho comes out. read more

Went in for some Pho since it was a chilly rainy day. Found this place on Yelp so decided to give it a try. Service was quick and our Pho was delivered promptly. What a strange, but ultimately enjoyable place to dine. First, the food here has been prepared and invented by some kind of Asian-cuisine genius. Its awkwardly translated menu is VERY extensive, and everything I have tried has been good if not amazing. Very authentic without being offensively foreign. The food here is unique and flavorful. Many menu items are surprisingly great, but the soup is amazing. Second, there are some problems that don't have anything to do with food. The decor and atmosphere... at best is functional and at worst, depressing. Unattractive tables and chairs, combined with boring, either barren or awkwardly decorated white walls, mixed with bad lighting. The whole place is rather uninviting and tinged with gloom. The main waiter I seem to have more often than not is this old man with a positively withering visage. His stony-eyed look of disapproval makes ordering or even asking for more water uncomfortable. Maybe he just has an unfortunate case of bitch-face, but yikes! The portions are weird, many items that come with rice, don't come with nearly enough. Unless you order several things, depending on your eating habits, there is a high chance you will go home wanting more. Or spend a small fortune filling yourself up. Unless you order soup! In which case, you will be faced with more soup than you ever wanted to eat in one sitting... it's amazing soup, but man! Good to eat here when you are feeling peckish but not ravenous, or when you are willing to purchase at least 2 main entrees a person. read more
