Thai is On my way! Of our favorite cuisines and Arawan is our one stop shop for all things Thai food. They have great service and are very personable. I've spent time learning about Thailand from the staff. As always you get to control the spice level of your food. What I understand is that the spice level in Thailand is much greater then our palates can handle. The mango sticky was my focus for this trip. It's a seasonal dessert with a short window. It's sweet and savory at the same time. Not overly sweet the mango's are perfectly ripe. The rice is sticky but not gooey. We love this restaurant. I generally don't give low reviews but....come on. So I stopped here to grab food to go since it was too hot to cook. I ordered the salad rolls and the number 87. (See picture). This dish says it is supposed to be spicy. When I gave them the name of the dish they asked me if I would like it mild, medium, hot or extra hot. I said I like spicy food and that I would like it to be hot please. They gave me a wait time and I walked over to the BevMo for a moment. When I came back (less than 10 min later), I picked up my food. The salad rolls were just ok. No real flavor, but the peanut sauce was pretty good. The #87 was a disappointment tho. It tastes like overly greasy pork fried rice that someone tossed some wilted basil into. Zero spice. None. I'm not saying it wasn't "spicy enough" for me, I mean it was bland. Bland and greasy. This has been my second bad experience with this restaurant. I don't know if it's the culture, but they don't ever greet you as if you're welcome there. I ordered garden curry, which is a red curry. She served me green curry. When I told her she brought me the wrong thing, she admitted she ordered the wrong thing and tried talking me into keeping the green curry. When I said no, I wanted the red curry. She acted displeased. When my red curry arrived, she literally threw it on the table walked away without looking at me. I requested chopsticks when I placed my order, they never came. I sat there and waited while others food arrived at their table watching them eat with their chopsticks. It took me over five minutes to finally get my chopsticks. Never once did they come back to my table and ask me how my food was or refill my water. When I did not tip and walked out, she gave me a dirty look. Never once offering an apology or asking how things were. I will never eat there again. At our table of 4 we had ordered the Pad Thai (different meats) and also the #93. The food was good but the service was just ok. We sat for quite a while until the server came to get our order. It's not that the place was packed. On our side of the restaurant there were two tables and on the other side there were also only two tables with guests seated. The water was filled once for two at our table but not refilled for the other two nor did server return to fill. We ordered the sticky rice for dessert. We did not receive it but we also were not charged for it. Again, we waited and waited for our bill. Our server definitely was not very attentive. Perhaps, she was busy in the kitchen -- no idea. The food was good but with the service not so good, not sure I would make a special trip to visit like we did this time. read more

This is one of the best restaurants in Vancouver. We just finished an amazing meal here and have to leave a review. Everything was delicious. Shrimp salad rolls with great peanut sauce, followed by a Panang curry that was outragious. They brought thai chili oil for extra spice. If you get a chance to visit when mangoes are in season, the mango and sticky rice is one of the best desserts ever. To add to the food, they always have really friendly service and they recently refurbished the restaurant. If you like great Thai food you can find it here in Vancouver. read more

It pains me to leave this review. First; I've eaten here before but it's been about two yrs back and for certain one other time most likely in 2018, each time it's been the same just sad to say very medicore. That's why I or we never returned for such a long stretch of time. I got garden curry with tofu, and papaya salad. I requested thai hot for the curry and medium for the salad. First the curry is supposed to have a lot of vegetables. It did not. It had very few vegetables; Which was disappointing. Also hardly any spice at all..... And I had specifically mentioned to the cashier please ask the cook to make it spicy. The overall flavor was flat. The papaya salad was just ok... I've had a lot worse and I've had a lot better so this was average. But also no decernible taste of spice. And the huge take away with the papaya salad was it was too salty..after eating it my mouth was dry and I needed to gulp copious amounts of water..then I found myself waking up in the middle of the night with dry mouth needing more water. This usually only occurs when I've consumed msg.. The whole meal has no love and if they want to make me a regular customer we'll give the food you make some love and tender care..better portions, more fresh not over cooked vegetables and please dont use msg. And finally when a customer requests thai hot please make the food spicy. Arawan doesn't use the fresh thai chilli peppers in they're Food. I really don't know what they use for chilli peppers but it had almost zero spice. Service, the folks working there are super friendly and kind. I found myself chatting with the cashier and another employee..they make you feel very welcome. That is why it hurts to give this review.... The ambiance is beautiful. They have one of the nicest interiors, booths and tables all very posh and clean with lots of Thai art and decorations all over... Just a wonderful place. I even mentioned to the cashier I hope the food is good because I would then become a regular customer and not always have to drive across the bridge for delicious Thai food. This is definitely a neighborhood favorite for me. They have renovated the interiors over the years and it's nice. My favorite things there are the lettuce wrap, which is a great sort of DIY dish. It's got all those signature Thai flavors. The Tom Kah soup is also one of my go -tos the line and coconut flavors marry so wonderfully in this dish. When I have ordered to go in the past the service is always prompt. I haven't gone to sit down in a while but the last time they seemed to be a bit short staffed. They have plenty variety of food to choose from. Delicious crab Rangoon, they don't skimp on the stuffing. Great pad Thai, if you order less spicy it's on the sweet side so I recommend going with medium. Sweet and sour chicken has really nice flavor and is a pleasant change from always having breaded chicken. Massaman curry is one of my favorites as well. New to the area and our first meal back in town after a week in Hawaii. And what a treat it was. Sarah was more than efficient, kind and accommodating which just added to the great food and overall experience. The sample platter was a perfect option for the two of us who wanted to try everything (you're allowed to pick 3; we took fried crab wontons, egg rolls, chicken satay which were all great. My wife had the Tom Yum soup with a 4/5 which she claimed was the perfect spice for her (and ensures I won't eat her food) with a generous portion of shrimp she was a happy camper. I opted for the Pad Thai which was great. Our only thought was the Peanut sauce was somewhat lacking in flavor but certainly not "bad". This is not my preferred Thai restaurant, but it was convenient to order from them as it's close to my home. I ordered the salad rolls and chicken satay, both of which are served with peanut sauce. My order arrived very well packaged and hot! Actually had to drop the chicken satay package as it was that hot. The order comes with 5 chicken satay skewers. They're about 1/4 inch thick. A flavorful marinade mix of herbs and spices is just the right seasoning and this is a good choice if you don't want spicy food. They had grill marks, so I'm assuming they were indeed grilled. Served with peanut sauce and a cucumber salad. The salad rolls (Po Pia Sot) are made to order and served with peanut sauce. The rice paper wrapper was nearly bursting at the seam. Over stuffed with crunchy, very fresh tasting vegetables, the majority of which is lettuce with a bit of carrot. They give you an ample amount of shrimp, although tofu is also an option. Rice noodles round out the ingredients. Ok, let's talk about the best thing about Thai food- peanut sauce! I think I could eat it alone as a soup. It. Is. So. Delicious! The peanut sauce is the ribbon wrapped around the present of my order. I don't know their specific recipe, but it's good. The only "bad" thing (and it's a big stretch to call it bad) was the chicken satay were packed on top of the salad rolls and some of the delicious, savory sauce managed to drip through a tiny opening onto the salad rolls. read more
