Today we had a grilled pork bahn mi sandwich ($4.50) and a small bowl of beef pho ($6.50). Sandwich was ok, but there wasn't that much meat. Soup broth was lukewarm and meat was not the best quality and there wasn't much in the bowl. I have had better tasting pho. I probably wouldn't eat here again, if shopping at the nearby Fry's. read more

First impression: walked in at lunch time on a Thursday. Service was quick, despite the fact that it was full. We were acknowledged as soon as we walked in and got a table right away. My sister and I shared the grilled steak rice plate and we got it with brown rice. It was delicious and served fairly quickly. Very bad customer service and rude cashier/server. My first tike to here and i don't know their setting. We ask for table of 2 and The guy on the front (host/cashier) was so rude. He said here pointing the menu from the wall. And i say what? Like i said i don't know how their setting. Then i found out that you need to order first before the get a seat. Which is fine but he doesn't know how to say it it a nice way. Same way when we were done eating. We were waiting and waving at him to come to out table and ask for the check and the same time ask for a to go container. He just looking and looking at us until i ask him, why he is not coming to our table. He is pointing and saying "you need to come here to pay" how rude was it. I think the food here is fantastic but the service has really deterred me from going back. There was one time I went there and ordered the crab wonton and something else, egg rolls or something - anyway, my friend and I sat there for 20 minutes before they came and told us that they had run out. Run out! At like noon! They're generally slow with bringing the food out and everything... But once you get the food it's pretty good. this was not my first time at Saigon Bistro, but whenever i think of Banh Mi, SB is the place. i started off with the #1 Banh Mi, which is more of the traditional style Vietnamese sandwich: pickled veggies, head cheese and pate -yum! the pho wasn't too impressive and lacked a lot of protein from what i'm used to seeing in a traditional bowl of pho. #35 was the beef brisket, fatty flank, and tendon. i added tripe to the mix, and had i realized, i should've added meatballs too. the broth was still nice and savory, and with the addition of sriracha, chili sauce and hoisin sauce it was even better (all traditional add ins-to your personal taste, of course). we finished with the fried bananas and coconut ice cream. it was good, but... the service. i noticed, not just on my table, but on all the tables in the restaurant, that food being served was not consistently at the same time. for example, for a party of three (an actual example of a table that sat in front of me at lunch), one person ordered a banh mi, while the other two guests ordered bbq rice plates. since the banh mi didn't take much time to prepare, it came out first, which left the other two guests to wait about 10 minutes after. which brings me to ...our dessert of fried bananas and ice cream came out a little too early. the ice cream started to melt a little, and luckily the server (which i assume was one of the owners) came to ask if we would like to have it later to avoid having melted ice cream-good save! the fried bananas were wrapped in thin lumpia wrapper and deep fried and served with two scoops of coconut ice cream topped with chopped peanuts. in the end, i'll have to remember to order the pho with the extras listed above, otherwise i won't order pho at all and just stick to the banh mi. read more

I'm getting frustrated with this place - they raised all the prices, and now have half the customers, at least when I go in. The banh mi are weighing in at $4.75 now - no kidding. I can get ones twice as big for $2.50 at the place by my work. Vegetarian vermicelli, which, I'm not kidding you, is tofu and veggies over rice noodles, is almost $9. For a counter-service restaurant where you grab your own water, this is insane. I only go back now when I'm really jonesing, because otherwise, the price is just too much. read more

I have been on a desperate quest to find Vietnamese Sandwiches in my area (should have checked Yelp sonner, duh!) so when I found this place, I immediatly called-in an oder for a pork sandwich and drove 5 exits out of my way to attain the grail. Waiting to pay at the counter, I noticed one of the women eating grapes (hand directly to mouth) then continued to cook in the rear which kinda gave me a little skeeve (- 1 star). Been here a few times before. Always good, nothing special. Fulfills the craving for pho. It's also my brother's go to lunch place for work. He picks up banh mi sandwiches here to go. He had the large bowl of wonton noodle soup today. This bowl is really big. He shared it with my niece and there was still enough in the bowl to probably share with me too. He's been ordering this the last few times. He really likes it. I had pho with meatballs and added tendon. Plenty of meatballs, pretty light on the tendon. Bummer. Egg rolls are ok. Their beef banh mi is really good. My family and I love them. Every time we get take out from there, that's what we order. As a matter of fact, we just got their beef banh mi for takeout again and they're still delicious. The French rolls are crispy. The meats, vegetables and the sauce are delicious. $4.50 each plus tax. This is my favorite pho place in the area. Not only is the pho terrific but they also have alot of other offerings such as banh mi and bun bo hue or bun rui or banh xeo. For the uninitiated, those are vietanmese sandwiches, and other tyoes of vietnamese dishes that arent commonly avaialble except in cities like oakland and San Jose. So to find it here in the east bay is a surpise but whats more surprising is that they are done very well here. The service is also terrific. The waiters are always kind and helpful. read more

The staff is friendly and service is fast. We've noticed patrons eating their food and then do a take-out for someone else or for themselves. I hope that they can keep their prices ~ imagine a delicious sandwich with fillings other than the usual lettuce, tomato etc. was filled with seasoned daikon/carrots, cilantro and onion for just $3.75. The bread is soft and not doughy or heavy; I wonder where they get their bread? The beef broth came piping hot and had a stronger flavor than the other pho places, but it was good. We'll try some other dishes again when we're in the neighborhood. I am sure that they do a brisk business with Fry's next door. I have loved Vietnamese sandwiches since I tasted my first one (over 16 years ago) in Hawaii. I always order them with extra vegetables, so I was happy with the generous amount of garnish on the grilled chicken sandwich that I had here. My husband tried the Beef Stew Noodle Soup, which seemed to improve for him as he got deeper into his bowl. He loves traditional Pho, and was unsure about ordering something different. I am just happy to find some vietnamese in the Burbs!!!! Pho is really good, the sandwiches, better. I think the beef in the Pho wasn't raw the last time I ordered it (so as to cook in the broth, my fav) so it tasted a bit over over cooked and jerkyish. but other times I've ordered it was good. Let me begin by saying the pho here is excellent. Seriously good. I went to another pho place in this little shopping center and did NOT like it. The servers are also nice and polite as well. My bf loves the vermicelli with pork, and I ALWAYS order the wonton soup soup with vermicelli and pork. YUM! Especially after I add my spouts, cilantro, and other accoutrements.... The reason why they only get 3 stars is because, oh my goodness, they are so slow! Not only are they slow but also forgetful. Nice as they may be, when my boyfriend and I are only one out of 2 or 3 tables here and you STILL forget my drink order, I cannot reasonably give you anything more than 3 stars. Especially since the wait for food, or to order, or for a check usually takes forever. Hire more wait staff or better train your current employees, and you just might get that 4 stars. read more

This is our go to place for a Friday night meal. It's delicious and it's cheap. The atmosphere is better than most Vietnamese places in the area, but it's still a little bit lacking, and they have two tvs that are always turned up a little too loud, otherwise I'd give it a full 5 stars. But for the price ($30 for two entrees and the spring roll appetizers, with plenty of leftovers) it's worth having to listen to the tvs blaring. The parking lot is also a pain, because it's tucked into a huge shopping center close to Frys. If we lived closer we'd do take out every time. If you're as hooked on Vietnamese food as I am, you will deal with those minor inconveniences for a yummy meal. I highly recommend the Bun, and if you have a sweet tooth, try the Thai iced tea with tapioca. read more
