I assume it's true because their cup sizing has changed which I'm sadly disappointed. It's more open space/spacious and I had to create a new rewards account. Drink menu names changed slightly on kiosk and on the wall. They don't have that tacky shelf with plush, stuff, Knick knacks, for sale anymore. Drink still good, I don't think recipe has changed. I heard, then seen it for myself, the instagram post and stories shared by friends, of people dancing and partying at the shop late nights after hours. Then when I went in, also still had the sign up that said they did dance concert or hosted DJ nights at the shop. But Im also assuming it was under the old management and they must've got caught something doing something illegal or something they weren't suppose to be doing. The minus one star is for the cup sizing. Bring it back! Main reason why I love coming here, a good price for big cup size. Now it's like every other boba shop. Milk Tea Lab is now under new ownership at this location, and having been visiting this spot quite often throughout that time I've become more than familiar with the quality and expectations of this place. This was my first time visiting them again since the ownership change so it's been a minute. What I see here now is just depressing, not just because the place was empty, but it's now devoid of anything that felt like a spot someone would want to hangout at. No music, when I got in there was one person waiting for their food and nobody was even at the front counter for minutes before somebody finally came out from the back. Ordering is just through the kiosk now, which isn't a bad thing. The part that was really rough was the reason why I even came here; the boba. I got a regular milk tea which now they only have a single size. I miss the extra large size they used to have, but oh well. The next issue comes with how much the boba actually costs. They may have gotten rid of the extra large cup sizes, but they're still charging the almost the same amount for it in a much smaller cup. What a deal, right? And we get to the actual drink. When the person making the drink after receiving your order finishes within a minute of making it, it's never a good sign. Why is that? Well, they had premade jug of milk tea ready to pour out for your tasting pleasure. When you have a premade jug of milk tea, it's never a good sign. While I've had them at other places that have done this before, and it's ranged from bad to mediocre, the one here at Milk Tea Lab, now, was in a word, rancid. It was incredibly gross with absolutely no redeeming qualities to it. I generally try not to be so harsh, but this was really not it and I couldn't even finish the boba because of how bad the milk tea was. It's sad to see how big of a dropoff this spot has become compared to what it used to be. This isn't like when they first opened where there were only 2-3 boba spots right next to them. Now there's at least a handful of options within a few minutes away, and dozens of spots within a mile or two, and this is what they're pushing out? It's a shame but this Milk Tea Lab which was their starter store is no longer a place I would ever go back to for boba. It's time is now past with this new ownership. read more

Came in here on a Saturday, so it was super busy. Ordered a Taro milk tea with red bean and Boba. Before I ordered, I made sure that the lady behind the desk had oat, almond, or dairy free milk options. She must've misheard me when I said, oat milk, cause she started using whole milk after I ordered. I told her I have dairy sensitivities. And she said that is the only milk that she had. But this was after I paid for the drink... i've never had a problem at other locations with no other dairy options. ...there was also barely any Boba and half the drink was red bean. Very disappointed. I must've been fourth in line after a family, and three other customers were served before me. If you have dairy sensitivity, DO NOT come here. I do not recommend it. I ordered a Passion Fruit Green Tea with 25% sugar, light ice, and black boba -- and honestly, I'm really glad I went with 25% because it was still very sweet. Like, easily what I'd expect from 75% sugar at other boba spots. So if you're sensitive to sweetness, definitely dial it down here. The drink itself was solid -- not the best passion fruit tea I've had, not the worst either. It's decent. The space is pretty casual -- there are plenty of tables (mostly inside, but one outside also) and lots of outlets (huge plus), and I believe they have Wi-Fi, though I didn't use it this time. They've also got two self-order kiosks, which I appreciated. This isn't the quietest spot -- people come and go, and conversations can get loud, so I wouldn't recommend studying here unless you have strong noise-canceling headphones. That said, I was able to catch up on my Yelp reviews and reading in relative peace. If it's a weeknight, the late-night crowd tends to be more mellow, and the space actually becomes pretty peaceful closer to closing. Love that it's open until midnight, not many third spaces are open this late nowadays! Would definitely come back when I need a low-effort spot to post up and be semi-productive past 10 PM. My sister and I went here earlier today (Thanksgiving) & we were the only ones in the store at around noon. It was my first time going and the location was easy to find and the inside is very spacious. We both ordered through the kiosk. She ordered a regular Emerald Milk Tea with egg pudding and popcorn chicken (mild spicy). My sister had no issues with her drink and thought it was good. Rating: 10/10 I ordered a large Berry Lover with 50% sweetness + strawberry hearts and french fries (mild spicy). I thoroughly enjoyed my drink and the fries. Usually I love my fries with a sauce but these fries didn't need it. Rating: 9/10 Service was great and helpful. The main issue was the pickup counter--once drinks were placed out, a large group of people kept lifting and touching multiple drinks to figure out which one was theirs. They remade my drink, but there was no apology and no effort to manage the pickup process. Cool balls! Milk Tea Lab has some pretty interesting drink creations. Great spot to hang out- lots of interior space and some games to play as well. They also do some collabs/specials re anime from time to time. There's also food, but I haven't tried the food here yet. Milk Tea Lab is the closest boba spot to one of the Pleasant Hill centers we somewhat frequent to pick up food, and it's also nearby-ish the daughter's orthodontist. We've tried several drinks here, and overall I find it to lack the actual tea flavor and the drinks are a bit more on the milky side. Reducing sweetness dilutes the drink, but regular sweetness is too sweet. My fave drink here is the honey roasted milk tea since the sweetness comes from the honey. Their mango and peach flavored drinks are alright too. The kids have tried various milk teas and Thai tea here, but they were more into the events (peel off event from the holiday season to win free stuff for instance) than the drinks itself as they claimed it lacked in flavor other than sugar. The toppings are good- pretty standard stuff, but I'm a toppings girl so that works out. Their cool balls are agar boba by the way. We just had to ask what cool balls were... I like adding mango boba to my drinks when I get a simple milk tea to add a touch of fruitiness and texture. Love the name and concept of milk tea lab though, but can be better executed. read more

I tried two of the three flavors they brought, honey roasted oolong milk tea, and mango green tea. Unfortunately since it was such a big event and the boba was popular - I'm assuming the catering team handed out a couple hundred drinks - they actually ran out of pearls by the time I reached front of the line. Both drinks were good, and quite sweet. I like the oolong milk tea since it's creamy and has a slightly nutty flavor, but the mango green tea was also nice, refreshing, had a kind of citrus-y fruity tang, though maybe almost a little too sweet than I would normally choose (but since it was catering, we couldn't adjust the sweetness level). Milk Tea Lab feels very different than it used to. At some point the menu changed, and the quality changed with it. I used to go out of my way to come here, even crossing a bridge, because the roasted milk tea was my favorite. Their popcorn chicken was also excellent; not many places do Taiwanese basil fried chicken well, and they really did. Now, it's just okay. We decided to get the tea anyway as we were already there but the wait was just way too long. It ended up taking 15 minutes for two drinks. The roasted flavor of one tea was just overpowering but we did enjoy the plain jasmine. We come here fairly often due to proximity and convenience (it's super close to Safeway and we like to raid their freezers when they're having their ice cream sales...). I like that they have ginormous sizes for only a tiny bit more than what other places would charge for a regular and you can also customize sweetness and ice level. My go to's are usually the classic or jasmine milk tea with no ice, 30% sugar, and either the aloe or the boba. They have snacks too, but we haven't tried anything other than the fries yet (won a couple free servings while they were doing their monopoly event last year). After consuming the large size of their classic milk tea while being stuck in traffic (woe is me for choosing the weekend they closed 680 to go visit my family...), I ended up pulling an unintentional all-nighter because hello caffeine, so I have since learned my lesson (for now) and opt for Mango Lover for a tasty non-caffeinated option if I'm going there in the latter part of the afternoon. They have several tables and a shelf of games. There's also a shelf where you can buy cute stuffed animals or stickers/other cute things. Overall, it's not the best boba I've ever had, but it's definitely a solid choice if you want bang for your buck! read more

The tea is good. The guy that is always there isn't. I've been 4 or 5 times in the past month and I always feel like I'm a total inconvenience. Once I asked him if they had any smaller sizes for kids and I just got a flat "No." and another time I went in and asked if he would split one into two cups (my son is 3 and definitely shouldn't have a whole one) and again "No." I would've been happy to purchase a 2nd cup or any sort of other idea, but he seemed disinterested in helping me. They have a new owner. They got rid of the reward system where you earn stamps for your purchase and redeem for a free drink or snack. I had a few stamps and was on the way to get a reward. I came to visit the shop and was told they got rid of it. I have collected many stamps and it was disappointed when they told me they don't do the rewards. Not to mention the prices have increased!! Why is the drink including boba $9??! All the other boba shops around here is $7. My go-to order is usually a milk tea or fruit tea with toppings and sometimes I order popcorn chicken. They also don't have spicy mayo or sweet chili sauce anymore. Everything they had at Milk Tea Lab is gone because of the new ownership. The Popcorn chicken was flavorful and tender, not dry at all and very reasonably priced :) I got the mango green tea and honey roasted milk tea both with boba and half sweet. The drinks really are on the sweeter side, as 50% tastes like a 100% at most other places. The honey roasted milk tea didn't have much of a roasted flavor like I was expecting :( but the mango green tea tasted pretty good. I think the drinks are a tad bit on the pricier side as it's $7.25 for each regular size drink with one topping, I was also expecting the little rounded bottom cup as I saw in another review but it's a standard size 16oz (i think) and they have a bigger supersize cup as a large. From prior photos of the Berry Lover drink and what is depicted on their menu, it's a bit misleading. They no longer give you a macaroon or fresh strawberry on top. I guess it was the original intention but the barista informed me they couldn't sustain it. The drink itself tasted ok - basically a strawberry syrup layered with whole milk, boba and cream. The main issue was that they made my drink cold despite ordering it hot. They didn't include a straw, although this could have been the fault of the DoorDasher. Despite these issues, I really liked both items I ordered. I would definitely order from MTL in the future in hopes that last night was an off night. I used to frequent this place when I lived at Saint Mary's College in Moraga. I have taken many friends (around 10 people, at different instances) here back around 2018-2019. I think my first visit was in 2018. I'm moving back to SMC in August so I'll be here more often. They used to close at 2 AM! Due to the pandemic, they currently close at 11 PM. I used to be a 1 AM regular. The drinks are good. Their grass jelly is amazing, one of the best I've ever had. Good snacks too. I liked the tater tots, and the portion was very generous. They got like 5 different sauces (ketchup, sweet and sour, tartar, bbq, ranch, if I remember correctly) but I just got ketchup for the tater tots. Staff is really nice. I love them. I asked them to help me take pictures lol since I was alone this time around. I asked for their cardboard Instagram border that I used to see often, and they had it! They're very nice! This was around 8:00 PM on Saturday June 26 2021. I always remember positive experiences with staff here, since 2018. I'm glad to see that they are still doing well. I don't know what their dog policy is, but I was holding my 13 pound poodle mix and there were no complaints. I love Mango Lover and Matcha Milk Tea with coffee jelly. I noticed with the few times I've been here, the Mango Lover is not consistent. Sometimes is too thick sometimes it's too thin and sometimes it's just right. However, all of those times, I like my drink. Just a note though, to those who are not fond of super sweet dessert/drinks, this is on the sweeter side. But don't worry, it's not the type that slaps you. I like the Matcha Milk Tea. It's good enough for my taste. Not bland but not too sweet. This is a small place but has more than 4 tables. There is a community eating place just outside. It's shared by all good places in this area. Food is ok but Calamari is tiny from what I'm used to. At least it's not greasy. Takoyaki is savory but has more batter than I'd like. I've had better.
