Saigon Basil is hands down the BEST Vietnamese restaurant up north. I have never been disappointed eating here, and I've tried a large variety of items from their vast menu. Reading the negative reviews here and I've gotta say... stop judging this restaurant solely on their pho!! There are SO many other options when it comes to Vietnamese cuisine, and Saigon Basil is about as authentic as it comes!!! Needless to say, the pho here is decent so not sure what others are comparing it to that makes it so bad? My personal favorites are the bun bo hue, canh chua, mi xao don thap cam, and ca kho to (catfish over rice). The dining spaces are clean and the servers are extremely nice. Food was good, but when we got refills of our iced tea it tasted like cleaner. We asked to speak to a manager who told us that there was nothing wrong with the tea, that it was just lemon... which is odd because the tea had lime in it..... No attempt to make it right and no apology at all. Now it's a waiting game to see if either of us get sick. Not a way to run a business at all. We are not complainers and we don't go out to eat looking to get something for free; we don't operate that way. However, when a customer tells you something is clearly wrong, you have to work to figure out what is wrong and correct it. We will not return EVER. Which is a shame because the food was very good, but the worry about if we are going to get sick as a result of the tea and the lack of concern by the management tells us they don't want our business. I've come here several times and always really liked the food, but the last 2 times the service has been terrible! Last time we stuck it out but today we sat there for 15 minutes, the people next to us arrived 5 later, were greeted and received appetizers and still no one came to our table. The last straw was when a single guy came in and was immediately served after we had been waiting and had still not received water or even been told someone would be by. As we were leaving, my boyfriend pointed out that he felt like it was because he's not white, and I hate to be that person but it really seemed like race might have played into the awful service we got. My husband and I were starving after work. So we came here and the portions were huge! Thanks gradients refresh and tasty! We even had coconut juice, which had young custard like cooking their pieces within it. These drinks were refreshing, and decadent. Before there was a Pho restaurant in every abandoned gas station and strip mall in the Metro Area, Vietnamese cafe cuisine was introduced to Denver when Thuy Fink opened her eponymous Thuy Hua (or was it 'Hoa'?) on South Federal Blvd so long ago I cannot exactly remember the date but it was sometime early 1980-ish or maybe late 70's. It was a splendid little cafe that served the most beautifully crisp pork egg rolls, soft shelled crabs, shrimp toasts, marinated grilled pork and chicken strips with the freshest, most aromatic Thai basil, mint and leaf lettuce along with rice noodles and hard thin discs of rice paper wrappers that you first dunked in a large bowl of hot water to soften and then composed your own Vietnamese burritos. You could not stop eating them but the portions were so large that if you were ever finally able to push yourself away from the table you still had enough leftovers for next day lunch - but of course you usually ate the leftovers for breakfast they were so damn good! As things happen, it prospered and it grew, it changed its name to Chez Thuy, then moved and then finally closed as many other credible Vietnmese restaurants opened and flourished; many very good, but none since have seemed to inspire the palate like Thuy. Lots of PHO though, every where you go, pho, pho, pho and mo pho. I like pho too, but give me a break. Good Lord I missed that place - until now!! Saigon Basil is the Second Coming of Chez Thuy and just in time!!!!! Having read the reviews for a couple of months I was dying for an excuse to make the trek from my cloistered existence in oh-so-chic Cherry Creek to the cultural barrens of Thornton to see if the rumors of an incredibly delicious wide-menu (more than Pho) Viet restaurant were true. It's true, it's true. I met my buddy, Dell, who works in Golden, for lunch. We quickly spotted the Saigon Basil Appetizer Plate which featured all of the above listed items and in addition, I had an iced Vietnamese coffee and Dell had a glass of Chardonay. We proceeded to have the best, most enjoyably delicious and wonderfully fresh assortment of beautifully crisply fried appetizer items, shredded pickled carrot and daikon salad, lettuces, basil and mint. I was looking for a Vietnamese restaurant that served canh chua. Moved to Wyoming last month and was in search for a Vietnamese restaurant. Came upon Saigon Basil with a huge menu. Ordered the Canh chua to go. The soup was Amazing. I like how the restaurant kept the shrimp and veggie separate from the soup. Lots of great options for Vietnamese food - the menu is almost overwhelming. The restaurant is big and easy to accommodate for large groups and service is friendly. I was annoyed last time because they forgot to put my order in so my food came out much later than the other dishes but it was so tasty and the portion so generous, I can't really hold it against them. I really like any of their grilled meats and I love to wrap them in rice paper for build-your-own spring rolls. Their combination noodle and rice dishes are also great if you're indecisive. Really good beef pho, normally get lean beef and brisket. The broth is salty and very tasty. The meat is normally lean but have had it come out a little more fatty a couple of times. The egg roll appetizer is really good. They give you plenty of lettuce with it as well. Took my parents here when they visited and my dad loved the fried rice. My new favorite Vietnamese restaurant! The dishes that I've tried have an authentic taste to them. This is the first time that I've been to a nearby Vietnamese restaurant and have seen other Vietnamese patrons. So far, I have tried: Mi Hoanh Thanh (Won-Ton Soup w/Egg Noodles & Meat, Shrimp & Crab). The broth is full bodied and the amount of food is satisfying. I feel like I've ordered this quite a few times already. Banh Hoi Chao Tom (Shrimp on sugar cane served with lettuce, cucumber, beansprouts, mint & fish sauce). Beware, this dish took a little bit longer than usual to come out but in my opinion was well worth it. The Shrimp mixture that was grilled on sugar cane sticks were tender and delicious. They gave me alot of greens to make into rolls with the ingredients. You get a bowl of hot water and a stack of rice paper wraps. Unfortunately, since I wear braces the rice paper wraps are too chewy so I just ate everything with chopsticks. Bun Bo Hue (Central Vietnamese hot & spicy beef soup). The broth is very flavorful. It was a little spicy with a tang of lemongrass. The meats in the bowl varied and were amazing. The beef was sliced thin and the noodles are the thicker rice noodles but thinner than an udon noodle. Success! I have finally found another authentic Vietnamese place that ALSO boasts a bevy of vegetarian (and many vegan) options. Not only do they have a whole vegetarian section on their incredibly large (10+ page) menu, but the owner told us that if you want someone they don't have, just ask. Plus, when I ordered their rice noodle bowl with vegetarian Vietnamese eggrolls, our server asked us if I ate fish sauce or not. When I replied no, she had the kitchen make me up a special sauce, fish free. Next time, I'll either try the vegetable hot & sour soup hot pot or the vegetarian pho (yes, with vegetarian broth!). Add to this the unlimited refills on their delicious Jasmine iced tea, the relaxing, open atmosphere, and the friendliness of their servers (plus plenty of free parking!). Granted, service was a little slow because a huge party got sat right before we came in, but our server made up for it, and the food was well worth it. We will absolutely be back! read more

I am utterly disappointed in Saigon Basil. I was a total regular when they owned Saigon Bowl in Denver and followed them to the new location. Let me break up my review in sections: Decor & Ambience: for an Asian place it's not bad, spacious, a plus from the previous location, however it goes down hill from there so even though I'd give a 4 star for the decor and space everything else drags the rating down. Service: horrible! There was 3 servers and it took 20 minutes to even get them to write down our order. Also, they had removed the Vietnamese combination dinner that was the most popular thing we Vietnamese like to order. So now you order it separately (so they can charge you a lot more). IT TOOK AN HOUR FOR OUR APPETIZER TO COME OUT!!! That is so ridiculous! Even though I have low expectations of typical Asian places... an hour is pathetic. We sat there waiting and waiting for each dish to come out, and considering what we ordered was the most popular of Vietnamese cuisine that was really sad. We also had to beg for our bill several times after sitting there for 2.5 hours! Food: This is what upsets me the most. The water and a bad smell to it, I don't know if the ice was dirty or the water came from an old dispenser with bad filters or what, but it was gross, and I tried everyone else's water to compare and it was all the same. We ordered Goi Dac Biet salad and it was supposed to be dac biet meaning special and it really was just cabbage and some shrimp and pork. FAIL! All the other Vietnamese restaurants have truely special salads. Bo Luc Lac (shaken beef) - it was not good... over cooked beef, very tough. The secret to Bo Luc Lac is to be medium rare and to be cut so that it doesn't take 10 minutes to chew through the beef. Ca Kho To (traditional braised cat fish) - FAIL AGAIN, Vietnamese people all know that you are supposed to use Vietnamese catfish for this dish... it has a different skin and the meat is much softer/fattier. They used American catfish which ruins the dish. Not only that, but the flavor was not cooked thru the meat, it's supposed to be slow braised so that the flavors incorporate into the meat but it was rushed (yet somehow we still waited over an hour for it). Canh Chua (Vietnamese traditional tomato sour soup) - bland, and lack luster. FINALLY - to top it off... RICE... the one thing ALL ASIANS SHOULD KNOW HOW TO COOK. DRIED, GRAINY RICE. Not fluffy, soft & perfectly cooked white rice the way it should be... but hard, dried out grains that had to be soaked in soup in order to digest. I am betting they fed us day old rice, not fresh cooked. Hopefully this was a fluke night for the restaurant, but I will never know because I'm never going back. Going to stick to Federal for real Vietnamese food. This was just poorly made Americanized fusion food with rude and lazy service. read more

Superb!!! I am so glad we found out about Saigon Basil. Finally some top notch Vietnamese food in the Denver area! We started with an appetizer sampler platter (which, for 2 people could serve as a meal unto itself). Crab fried to perfection, egg rolls, bbq chicken, bbq beef, fried shrimp paste & all the fixings to roll your own spring rolls. Everything seemed super fresh. The mint & cilantro were so good I have the feeling they were straight from the garden. The pickled carrots/daikon were just right. My avocado boba was really good - the tapioca balls were sooo tender. Maybe the best I've ever had. And that's saying something! On to my main dish: Bun bo Hue. So. AMAZING. I will probably order this again & ask for them to make it extra, extra spicy. I drank all the broth very slowly & savored every sip. Such rich flavor & again the herbs were all extremely fresh. Too bad I was already ultra stuffed from that humungous sampler platter. The whole experience was accentuated by the spectacular service. We were initially greeted by the owner (he must have been the owner), who was genuinely friendly & very interested in how our meal went. All the staff seemed truly engaged & we felt very welcome there. As a side note, the restaurant was incredibly busy for a Tuesday night - and most everyone was Vietnamese. Menu: freakin huge......so much to choose from! We were in a hurry to get to a graduation, so didnt really have time to soak it all up. I ordered a #44, which is basically like a noodle salad with all kinds of yumminess in it. Had pork, beef, shrimp, egg rolls. Come with a side of sweet sauce to pour over it. Apparently this dish is popular as the server told me. It was great, took 1/2 home for lunch the next day. Portions are huge, and price is spot on. My BF had #16 which was a Pho with meatballs. OMG, I made him trade with me 1/2 way through is meal...lol. What a great warm option for a chilly night! All the Pho comes in 3 sizes, you can also choose to add more noodles or meat for a nominal price. Honestly for what he got for about $7 was all he and I could consume in one sitting. 100% I will drive back to this place which is about 20-25 min from where I live, I will be a regular and cant wait to go back! Service was awesome, the owner came over when we were done as I raved about the food, service, ambiance etc he was nothing less than all smiles! All in all 2 of us ate more than we should have and the bill was $18.....holy crap, what a deal! This review is for their egg noodle combination dish. A solid 4 stars and a good break from Pho. They give a large helping of veggies and meat with the egg noodle stir fried with a really good flavor balance. At some point I will probably try their Pho but I have my place for that in Pho Saigon. This is one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in metro Denver for sure. If you're looking for comfort Viet food that's legit, this is the place to go. The restaurant is very spacious and can easily accommodate big groups. It's also in a very accessible location, just off I-25 and 104th Avenue. Definitely order the make-your-own spring rolls, which come with eggrolls, grilled pork and chicken, soft-shelled crab and so much more. And don't be intimidated or turned off by their extensive menu. They may not specialize in any one dish, but they do specialize in deliciousness in every one of their dishes!
