Bad experience at Sahota Palace. Their dinner buffet has two options: you can dine in and eat as much as you want, or they provide a takeout box for the buffet. Since we are vegetarians, we only took kadhi pakora, dal, and saag. Because I have a wheat allergy (including maida and atta) and gluten allergy, I simply requested a separate paper bag, small piece of foil, or even a paper napkin for the roti and samosa so they would not get mixed with the other food. My request was clearly denied. The server explained that there are cameras everywhere and that he gets scolded for giving out extra items. It was extremely uncomfortable to hear this as a customer. When a restaurant is so focused on monitoring every paper bag or piece of foil that a guest with a food allergy cannot be accommodated, something is seriously wrong with the customer service. I have no complaints about the food itself, but this behavior was unacceptable. A simple request related to a food allergy should be treated with basic consideration, not as though the customer is asking for something unreasonable. I have attached a copy of my bill and a photo of the buffet takeout box for reference. This was my last visit. I would especially caution people with food allergies or dietary restrictions, because based on my experience, your health-related requests may not be taken seriously. Zero stars for the way this situation was handled.

Alright sooo, this place is likely the worst Indian food that I've ever had (and also poor service). This was my last dinner in Syracuse before left the next morning (work trip) and was I disappointed... Off the bat, it took 5+ minutes for someone to come seat me, even though the "restaurant" was empty, save for one table. I got seated in the corner, which I don't mind, but it definitely felt weird considering all the other, more comfortable seating choices available. After what seemed like forever, I was able to order the Chicken Biryani, pretty standard Indian fare, and mango lassi. After another considerable wait, I received my "biryani" and lassi. Starting off with the positives: the lassi tasted like a lassi. The negatives: the biryani felt like it was made earlier and put in the microwave...gross. The rice on top was warm and the inside were cold. The chicken was rubbery and inedible. I attempted to eat the rice, which strongly tasted of cumin and pepper and nothing else, but could not keep going. Needless to say, I didn't need a box. Overall, food 0/5, service 1.5/5, ambiance 2/5. If you want any kind of decent tasting food, look elsewhere!

I ordered the chicken biryani, extra spicy. A star for the chicken, rice & spice, but since there were no cashews or sultanas, they don't get those stars. Their Naan was a bit dry & overcooked. & not very garlicy at all. Their raita is very runny. Like they forgot to get the water out of the cucumber first. Their Mango lassi was also watered down. While the spice was great & very nice to find from an americanized establishment, a biryani missing half the ingredients can't be excused. Especially when your own description says that it is made with "nuts and raisins".

This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the area. They offer a lunch buffet most days of the week and a dinner buffet Sundays. A great way to try different dishes, especially if you are not familiar with Indian food. Their dishes are very flavorful and I love the chicken chili and mango chicken in particular. They seem to always offer salad, different sauces and chutneys, basmati rice, naan, chicken dishes, a couple vegetarian options, fried pakoras and samosas, golub jamen, and kheer. I have found that Syracuse Indian buffets tend to be more on the medium spice side vs. the Albany area which I would categorize as mild. I think serving mild at a buffet is probably a safer idea if you want to introduce people to your cuisine. The place is nestled in an older plaza. Bathroom is down a darkish hallway and is dark and outdated. There is a tv in the dining area that plays Indian music videos. Today the sound was pretty loud. Some of the videos are not that appropriate for young children. I wish they had it off and just had some music playing. Would make for a nicer dining experience.

Special Mixed Grill

This place is a rip off. If you really want to serve people authentic food, don't mix meat and rice and call it biryani when the customer can clearly tell from the taste that it's plain left over meat mixed with pulao rice. Mixed grill meat smelled and tasted old. Is there any honesty left in the world? We paid $50.54 to get this mean to feed our kids from a long trip and everyone went to sleep hungry because this was the meal we could afford. If I could report this business, I would for serving food that's absolutely trash and shouldn't be fed to people. It's disgusting, old, cold. Thank you for ruining our dinner,

Food was edible but not delicious. The only food I would recommend would be the naan. Chicken Tikka was so disappointing and the vegetarian platter was hard.

It was very quiet inside on a Sunday afternoon but it was nice. Our waiter, might've been the owner, was so kind and caring. Everything we tried was very flavorful, made so well, and the presentation was beautiful with edible flower and glitter a top all the dishes we ordered. She was looking for advice from me, but I was very happy when the owner came by and said he could select our food and we trusted him.He asked us a few questions about spice level, proteins, etc. He said he would bring us an appetizer, a chicken entree and a vegetable entree. He also brought us 2 hot chai drinks. We agreed it was the best chai we've ever had....it was mildly sweet and the spices were perfect. We were brought as an appetizer...fried cauliflower with a Manchurian sauce which was sweet, mildly spicy and a touch sour..... perfect. We got 4 beautiful veggie balls..... finely minced veggies with paneer in a very creamy sauce. The taste was a little sweet and when eaten on the super hot and fresh naan it was delicious. Our last dish was chicken kebabs, I believe made in the tandoori oven with spices and served with a beautiful sweet, creamy tomato sauce. We didn't ask for dessert but we're brought a complementary rice pudding to share... heavenly! We were checked on several times and water glasses were kept filled. We are both big water drinkers. I was so impressed with both service and food. If I could rate it more than 5 stars, I would do it!!

Flavor of India is tucked into a little corner of East Syracuse and you'd miss it if you weren't looking. Staff was friendly and sat us right in front of the fire place on a chilly 20 Degree night. The food took about 15 to 20 minutes and was hot, fresh and flavorful with requests to us on our spice level which I went spicy and didnt regret it (but my body might have) lol. The Biryani portion for $17 was definetly enough for 2 meals and I felt full from about half of it thought that might have been the capsacin. The garlic chili Nana was very interesting because in one bite it cut the heat from my biryani but then hit me with chili and the spice came back. About $50 for 2 people w/ 2 entrees, naan, and water. A little pricier than what you might want for just 2 people but the food's taste and size make up for it. Would definetly go back.

If you live near Syracuse University or work in the area near Upstate University Hospital, the VA…read moreor Crouse Hospital then you must be familiar with the Royal Indian Grill on 147 Marshall Street. Most notably, they serve a lunch buffet during the week that costs less than $13 and is bar none the best value for your money. I often partake in the take-out buffet during the weekdays and can't deny that its the best option for when I am really hungry and want a satisfying meal. The staff are associated with other well known Indian restaurants in the area (The Clay Oven and the Dosa Grill to name a couple) as denoted by their various polo shirts with the named establishments screen printed on the chest. On various days, I have experienced questionable attitudes from the wait staff but, most of time, I don't dine-in so my experience in this regard is not very reliable. But, be forewarned that some previous reviews have criticized the customer service of the staff and called it into question on more than a few occasions. The buffet has a wide variety of options available and they try to mix up the entrees beyond the usual Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Curry and Tandoori Chicken. On Fridays, they sometimes serve Fish Masala which is a personal favorite of mine. There are also a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options as well beyond the salad bar. In fact, if you ever consider converting to a vegetarian diet, Indian cuisine is the way to go. The variety of options consisting of chick peas, cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes, eggplant, okra, lentils and cheese are so expertly prepared with herbs and spices that make any traditional Indian dishes absolutely delicious. If you are new to Indian cuisine you can feel confident in the knowledge that the spice levels are very mild (unless you specifically request a certain level of spiciness). Overall, its a great and affordable experience for any foodie who enjoys fragrant cuisine highlighted by herbs and spices that aren't overbearing. The buffet is all-you-can-eat and the to-go option is very filling. This is my go-to option for anytime I am famished and just want something delicious that always leaves me satisfied. You owe it to yourself to try this out. And the price point will never disappoint. What have you got to lose?

When my order came, it only had the paneer. The receipt on the bag had only the paneer on it, so I'm assuming it was on the restaurant's end. I can understand if they were out of that item, but they made no attempt to contact me and let me know and ask if I wanted to substitute something else. I later called the delivery service and they refunded me, no hassle, but still, this was a major bummer. By the time my food came, I was headed into a meeting and it was too late to order something else-- plus, I wasn't about to pay double delivery fees. I was really looking forward to this meal so it was a bummer that it wasn't what I was expecting, and there seemed to be no attempt at contact. The paneer was ok, but the flavor was a bit on the sour side and I wouldn't call it the best Indian food I've ever had. I'd be willing to give this spot a second try eventually but I'm not running back here after a bit of a letdown.
