It's Friday and I left my crew to drive back to Sacramento on the 80, while I take my car and head to Carson City to visit a good friend and then head back to Sacramento on the 50 by lake Tahoe. My friend suggest we meet at the Sage Cafe for lunch, located inside the Carson Tahoe Hospital. I've been here before, and liked it, so I wasn't surprised at wanting to have lunch at a hospital! He said they opened the wok stir fry station that was closed for a long time. He said it was really good and you get to make up you own wok fry my just checking off on a list of ingredients of what you want. We meet up there, you just have to sign in at the front desk as you enter first. The inside looks same as it always did, open and clean. We go over to the stir fry station on the back to the right. For $8.65 you get to pick out all the stuff you want, no limit, but I do think they go my total weight, so like if you pick 2 meats, you get less of each one, still generous with the stuff you pick though. We just filled out the little forms, circling what we wanted. They even offered shrimp for no extra cost. You won't get that in any Chinese restaurant! I got shrimp for my protein and the chef put a ton of it in! My friend had a combo of chicken and shrimp. We watched as the chef tossed our stuff in the air in the wok. They run induction burners, so no giant flames ... prob a good thing inside a hospital! Our food is served in to go boxes, no plates here. Wow, the food was super scrumptious, I liked our selection of ingredients. I'd say with this wok stir fry station open now, get yourself over here and have lunch. The food is outstanding! Fresh, seasonings and sauces are wonderful. I had a large poke bowl (actually it was huge!) packed with fresh vegetables and multiple pieces of tuna, salmon, shrimp etc. My wife had a large bowl of stir fry which was also delicious. The two bowls combined was $18.75 for these gastronomic delights! The service was also great as our dishes were prepared so well. The ambiance? I ate all/most of her bacon; she is missing out. The bacon was almost like a jerky and I mean that in a positive way. Just the way I prefer it! She also saved half her sandwich for dinner. 2-Year Update...Sage Cafe Coming back two years later to say this place is still doing it right. Sage Cafe continues to deliver quality food, generous portions, beautiful sunsets and prices that honestly don't make sense for how good it is, in the best way. What really stands out is the consistency and the people. Pedro, Ramón, Javier, Gilberto, Juan, Chef Jerry, and especially Luis (20 years here!) continue to make this place feel welcoming. Luis personally checked on my order to make sure my steak sandwich was cooked exactly how I like it, service like that is rare anywhere, let alone in a hospital café. Ordered the steak sandwich with fries and a chicken sandwich with onion rings..everything was fresh and perfectly cooked. All of that, plus a fountain drink, under $23. My original fish fry food truck was a no show, I already packed my own vinegar so off to the hospital I go, I remembered they also had fish & chips on their menu, what a find,! This will be my go to spot for fish & chips when I want again. The fish was not huge pieces but then again at that price I can order two. The prices are extremely resonable. The fish was deep fried perfectly with a nice crunchy coating and not overcooked in the middle. The fish was not salted which was great, a lot of fish fry places overly salt their deep fry items., allow you to add salt if desired. The chips, ah the chips, were wonderfully cooked, crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside, my sister being a french fries critic would approve. Looks like it's time for an UPDATE on the current menus. Posted as of 3/8/2026. Prices have gone up, but still a better deal than any restaurant in town. I got the Fish and Chips, they seemed improved over what they used to be. More crunchy batter. Deal at $7.75 and no tax or tip! The burgers are actually flame grilled and have a charbroiled taste. Note: grill is Closed between 10:30am and 11:00am for the switch over to lunch service. They now have big baked pretzels for just $2.75 each. I heard that people would stop here to eat a good meal at a reasonable price. I thought this was a little funny since it's the hospital cafeteria...but whoa!!! Not only do you get good food, but the prices are VERY reasonable. I came in on a weekend, but if you are able to come in on a weekday, they have a stir fry bar and poke bar. I hear the breakfast is also popular. I had the spicy chicken sandwich and loved it! It does feel like a hospital cafeteria, but the hospital is beautiful. I was half way through before I remembered to take a picture, it was so yummy looking. I eat here just about every week (my perk for volunteering) and today I tried the Poke Bowl! Wonderful healthy addition to the cafe. As with the stirfry bar, you fill out a little firm, circling what you want and they make it right up. The ahi was tender and fresh, all the add ons were just right, rice was excellent ..often hard to get well prepared rice in a food service setting. Highly recommend Sage! read more

I was in the hospital for a few days recently and my wife offered to get some of the hospital cafeteria food for me. I figured she just needed to walk around a bit so figured I'd suffer through whatever she came back with and pretend to enjoy it with a smile. I was very surprised on how delicious the fare was here and for a great price too. I would actually consider coming to Carson Tahoe hospital when feeling healthy just for a bite to eat if hungry in north Carson City. I can't speak of the ambiance nor amenities downstairs as I was a patient upstairs, but I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and salad. The reviews of this place mimic my own experience so it doesn't seem like fluke experience. Unfortunately I have noticed there are newer cooks and they have either messed up my order and the last two times I was there they made my husband's order but not mine. Finally tried Sage Cafe in the CarsonTahoe Hospital.. 1st. Was kind of confusing on ordering as there was a menu on the wall and people standing all over waiting on orders. No biggie, we figured it out. Hubby n I decided on trying the reuben as we love those sandwiches so much. They do not have onion rings on the menu, but they do serve them and omg so so good. They had no ice for the drink machine, so we opted for a bottled water. The cafe itself is kinda crazy, but it all works. Once we walked up to the grill and placed our order, it was a matter of time as it is made fresh to order period!!! Love that aspect. We received our order in probably 7 to 8 minutes. Which is not bad at all as we went during lunch and they were busy. Now a reuben, onion ring and a water were under 10.00 6.95 sandwich 2.10 onion ring add on .85 for a bottle of water. You will not break the bank eating here and you will be full for sure. We shared and could not finish it all. Once you leave the order area wth your food, you walk into the dining entrance where you pay, get your condiments, silverware etc. The dining room was spacious, clean and very inviting for a nice quiet lunch. Plenty windows for a nice ambience. Outdoor tables for when the weather is not so cold. They have a decent sized menu and just 2 people were busting out the orders. As well as very friendly. If I had to critique 1 thing on this meal the bread was soggy on 1 side from the extra juice I'm guessing from the Sauerkraut. But the corned beef,cheese and bread were so delicious. You wouldn't expect to find such a great eatery in a hospital. Enter Sage Cafe. We came here based on reviews. The guy who took your order was genuinely soooo nice. I ordered the fish and chips but substituted for onion rings with ranch. My son had the beef nachos, and those were delicious, too. Everything cooked to order and did not take very long. Hospital cafe extraordinaire! I heard rumors of the great food and value. No joke! We tried the steak sandwich with fresh onions, peppers, and mushrooms. Also the crispy shrimp tacos. Beautiful, light, and healthy. When I ordered the sandwich, they asked if I wanted fries. Yes. They were good, but others ordered onion rings and tater tots. Next time! The food was great and they spent less than $20 (including 2 Perrier waters). The burgers looked absolutely amazing and only $7, so I will definitely bring our family back for a meal. Unfortunately, I found myself spending a fair amount of time at his hospital over the summer. Thankfully, Sage Cafe gives you one less thing to worry about while you or a loved one is here. Sage Cafe is a complete redefinition of typical hospital food. Normally, it's atrocious. The food here, however, is on par with some restaurants you'll find around town. I've tried the French dip and their French toast with black berry compote and my wife tried their turkey club. All of the food was damn good considering where you are. The service was...meh. When you arrive, you place your order with the cooks. On my first visit, the guy was....indifferent. Not rude, necessarily, but not polite either. The next day, it was a different guy and he was super friendly. So I guess it just depends on the day. To pay, you go to the checkout register in the cafeteria and you're free to use the tables there to eat. It looks like a break area as you'll be surrounded by doctors and nurses but rest assured, you're ok to be there. read more

Shockingly good hospital food! Visited this cafe a lot while visiting a family member in the hospital. I was expecting the usual nasty, expensive hospital food, or food that just seemed like it was frozen and warmed up. To my surprise, the safe cafe was great! The prices were very reasonable. And the portion sizes for the hot meals were huge! My favorite meal was the hamburger with fries. It was delicious. The burgers were amazing!! Huge and juicy and delicious. We also ordered the French Dip and the Pastrami Reuben on our 2nd trip. Not so impressed on that round, but for the most part, the Sage Cafe is a nice little hide out of a cafe, very reasonably priced and super friendly cooks ready to greet you and cook up your order in a flash. Their onion rings are perfect!! French fries very, very good. Ambiance? It IS a cafe, so not sure if you are going to get much "ambiance" in a 'Cafe per se'. LOL! However IT IS Carson City and the natural nature and scenery of the Sierra's and lovely hard working hospital staff taking a break from life serving duties.....well....that is "ambiance" enough for me. The absolute best Thanksgiving dinner I could have wished for!! Huge portions; 1/2 inch thick real ham slices (not processed), same with turkey (processed but good). Creamed green beans, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy,, Mac cheese (to die for), stuffing, cranberry sauces,,,, all fresh homemade!!!!!, and of course, for dessert; fountain drinks, etc, and 3 kinds of pie. But all that pales when compared to the happy, joyous attitude of the always friendly servers who took special pride in preparing this feast. The cost??? You wouldn't believe it if I told you. Chapter 3, "The Final Review" Okay, the only reason I started coming here was because it had good reviews on Yelp. I mean, why else go to a HOSPITAL to find good food? So I believe my 1st review was 3 star, last one in May 23 was 4 star, and today on 9/17/23 another 3 star. Got here today (saturday) at noon. Told the hospital customer service i was going to the cafe, so he pointed at the sign-in sheet. As I've learned through trial an error, today I signed "E. Fudd" and walked down the hall to the cafe. No ID check, so still a security flaw for the hospital. First thing I noticed was a sign posted something to the effect of "Sorry but we're closing at 3pm today." Now it didn't affect me (did i just use effect vs. affect correctly? i hope so) but my dining companion said they had seen something like this on another visit, and we don't go here that often. Either adjust your hours or hire more people, imho. (or maybe they were closing b/c the hospital would have zero patient at 3pm? lol) (Parking lot was empty-ish b/c weekend, so maybe that's why they only had one cook working.) One cook took our orders and we waited. After about 8 minutes I hear "tuna sandwich!" A lady, who ordered after me, says "that was fast!" But then said she wanted fries. What ended up happening, gentle reader, is that like many other times, the cook had really said or meant "turkey melt" but it sounded like "tuna". Anyway, suddenly there were 3 turkey melts ready at the same time, two with fries and one with tots. A dude took my order with tots (he may have also ordered tots), then I took mine and told the cook that i was supposed to have tots. He kinda gave me this look and I said don't worry about it. I figured i'd just eat the fries. I told the cashier what happened, and she ended up not charging me for the fries I hadn't ordered. This is good customer service. Re-read this. The sandwich was pretty decent, but was missing the avocado. My person was missing tomato from their cheeseburger. Burgers usually come with tomato, right? We finished and I asked friendly cashier lady about avocado and she confirmed it was supposed to have it. She said their cook isn't the regular one. I don't know if this means he's a weekend guy, or just new, but again: it's these little details and inconsistencies that disappoint. I told the cashier I really want to come in one day and then write a 5-star review, but I cannot. She again apologized. I told her it's not a huge deal, just little things. So in closing, I've probably eaten here about 6-8 times, yet I cannot give it higher than 3 stars. The wrong orders, the cooks not caring who picks up which orders (which is like being at an airport baggage claims when everyone just runs up right in front of you and then you can't see the luggage), the security protocols which are useless...at least cashier lady was great. What a great find! We were staying at the McCloud RV resort. I didn't want to cook dinner. Unfortunately their patio was closed because it was so hot outside. We had our pups with us. Do they let us order to go. It was fabulous!! We had - polenta with collard greens and wild mushrooms, hamachi crudo, black cod , and French radishes and butter- this made me so excited because I have only had these in France! I'm adding this review on behalf my brother and step dad. You may recognize them as their pace rapidly increases approaching the Sage Cafe. Maybe, a "pep in their step". When entering, they typically are whistling or just panting heavily. Needless to say, they're excited. They gaze at the menu as if its a beautiful woman, say Aphrodite. The food at the Sage Café, even though it's at the hospital is amazing. The chef's and service people are friendly and they do a good job at meeting your needs. It's one of the best priced places to eat here in Carson City, offering a wide range of different choices for a meal. This cafe is in the hospital. If you're gluten free you cannot eat here. I have asked every day for a week. Obviously the salad bar is off limits: the cross contamination is epic. You can get a frozen Amy's meal and heat it using the microwave in the cafeteria. So... it's better than a sharp stick in the eye. read more
