Came here for the lunch buffet. The place looks clean and modern, the servers are prompt with taking empty plates away and refill water, they are also helpful with explaining different dishes. The buffet food is not terrible, however you would expect better quality for the limited options they have: it's mostly curries (tikka, korma, saag, etc.) and rice/naan. I don't know, if you want to stuff yourself quickly with unlimited chicken tikka masala and naan for $13 during lunch, this is probably a place to go in west lake. read more

I was really excited to see the new Saffron Indian Restaurant. I am always on the hunt for Nepalese food, and now there are more places to chose from in Austin. I especially like the Chicken 65, Chilly Chicken and Chow Mein at Saffron, just the right mix of flavor and heat. I usually get both the Chow Mein and one of the Chicken dishes, that way I have extra to take home for dinner the next day. read more

We live in Westlake and eat here on average twice per week. Saffron is a HUGE upgrade over the former Indian restaurant that was in this location. Their chicken tandoori is truly first rate (I basically get it every time:), the meat is juicy and tender and is among the best I've had anywhere in the country (I used to live in both Portland, OR and NYC and they have great Indian restaurants). My wife is a big fan of their curry dishes and has tried nearly everything on the menu. Their garlic naan is also delicious. They don't have a liquor license so definitely BYOB and they don't even charge a corking fee (not sure of any other restaurants in town who are this generous). The service is consistent and great and the net net is that I recommend Saffron in Westlake Hills without reservation. You should try it, you'll love it along with the list of followers they are garnering. It's GREAT! read more

Saffron is a great addition to the West Lake area. The food is really good and the service is great. I've been twice. The first time I had the mixed tandoori and samosas. The samosas has great flavor and the mixed tandoori grill was mostly a hit. The only item I was underwhelmed by was the paneer. The second time we had chicken tiki masala and the yellow daal. Both had great flavor. I'd say the spice level is geared towards the American palate, so it may not hit the spot if you are looking for some spice to cure a winter cold. Overall I'd go back or order takeout on a rainy day. read more

This is my new favorite Austin restaurant. Saffron is new to this location but not new to Austin. The food was amazing, as was the customer service. We had minced chicken and saag, lamb roganjosh, samosa chat and brussels sprouts. Everything was tasty with just the perfect amount of spice (medium hot). We will be back often. read more

I really really wish it was good because I absolutely love having an Indian buffet restaurant in the area, but it's just plain not good. I tried their lunch buffet when they first opened and it was bad. Bland, extremely over cooked meat, just disappointing options and lack of flavor. But I waited for a couple months to see if they just needed time to improve it, but it's actually worse. I haven't tried their made-to-order dishes, but the buffet is the centerpiece of an Indian lunch restaurant, and it was all really pretty bad. I think the milky dessert had actually gone bad (it tasted like rotten milk). This is actually the first Indian restaurant I've tried that I didn't like. Their staff seems great and very friendly, but the food is just not good. The previous Indian restaurant at the same location wasn't great, but it was better that this. read more

In a town without a huge number of great Indian places, saffron is a breath of fresh air. Super high quality, really nice food. Chicken tikka masala is made with perfect pillows of perfectly butchered chicken breast. Lamb dishes equally perfect meat pieces (that can be hard to do with lamb). Chicken 65 appetizer is a personal favorite. Had the lamb chops too (I guess I go here a lot) and they were perfect. Solid Indian (and Nepalese!) food with a huge menu (not just meat folks). read more

Absolutely, hands-down the best Indian food in Austin! We've been fans of the Far West location for years...since we lived less than a mile away and fell in love with the ridiculously flavorful food and amazing service. Be sure to get the saffron naan (our kids' favorite), the chicken momos (dumplings), the saag paneer, chicken lazeez, any of the curries, the lamb rogan josh....I could go on and on. Be careful on asking them to kick up the spice before tasting it, though - they take their spice seriously! Only place that I ever said "level 4" (out of five) and I had those lovely sweat beads all over my face :) Honestly delicious and at least as of right now, still BYOB so bring your favorite wine or beer with you and it's a fantastic meal that's actually budget-friendly. read more

Six of us really enjoyed dinner here. Everything we had was a hit. The okra appetizer was amazing and also enjoyed the samosa chat. I really liked my Chicken Tikka Marsala with naan bread. Others in our party had Chicken Tandoori, Shrimp curry, fried rice and a couple of lamb dishes. We all agreed that we want to return. So glad this option is in Westlake, which suffers from a true dearth of decent restaurants. Especially of the international variety. Great food, good-sized portions, pleasing modern decor, and such a friendly and accommodating staff. I consider myself a bit of a curry connoisseur and was very pleased with their's. I'm not the only one. It was hailing when I went and despite the weather, the place kept filling with people. I could hear one table of 4 guys all raving from across the restaurant. By far the best Indian in Austin (and I've tried them all). I used to have go up to Far West so I'm really happy they moved to WestLake. Try the Gobi Manchurian...I don't like cauliflower and I love this dish. All the lamb dishes are great...you can't go wrong. read more

I'm really pleasantly surprised by how tasty everything was -- takeout curbside. Very authentic. I find it hard to find good Indian Chinese (or maybe in this case Nepalese Chinese) but this place does it well! Small complaint: they over-use the red food coloring a bit on their chili dishes, but the taste makes up for it. YUM read more

We have lived right here in West Lake Hills for 25 yrs...and only dined ONCE at the previous restaurant that was in that same spot "Bombay Grill". It was THAT bad. So when this new place opened up in the same spot, the first thought that came to mind was "recycled ownership".... the oldest trick in the book... "close the old shop down start a new one with a different name" and hope enough people are fooled into thinking this is some swanky new establishment. Yup, that's what it looks like happened here because the food is just as bad, if not worse! Walked in on a Monday evening at around 7pm and there were about 3 people dining! OK, that should have been a big red flag but we decided to take a chance since we live in town. We ordered 4 items: lamb kabobs, chicken mughlai/tikka kabobs, goat curry, etc. The goat curry was AWFUL - all bones, no meat. Total RIP OFF!! I wanted to call and demand my money back bec. that's just not right!! The lamb kabobs seemed uncooked!! The Chicken kabobs were over cooked and salty with some strange taste. All in all, this place is just bad! Nothing authentic about the food, nothing that really screams even "mall Indian food". To make matters worse, they charge "West Lake Hills" prices for mall food. In a place like Austin I really don't understand how bad restaurants like this can stay in business.... Stay away. Waste of money. read more

We just had an excellent meal at this reincarnation of a former Indian restaurant. My husband and I shared lamb dishes, lamb saag and lamb Pasanda, both filled with succulent lamb and delicately spiced. We ordered medium spiced and it wasn't too hot at all. I lived in New York for many years and went to many an Indian restaurant, and this definitely holds up to any in New York. We had appetizers of okra and saffron scallops, which were wonderful. Don't take my word for it though. My sister who has been to India five times and Nepal three times said the food was very authentic and delicious. The rice pudding dessert was a creamy concoction of rice, cream, cardomom, slivers of almonds and pistachios--not gelled like American rice pudding but a soupy rich dessert to die for. You have to bring your own wine or beer, but that's hardly a negative. read more

The service here is fabulous; everyone is super nice and they really make you feel like a valued customer. I like a lot of items on their menu, but I will say the recipes/ flavors are not always consistent. Sometimes I try something and it is the best thing I've ever had and then I go back wanting that same dish, but upon return it will taste somewhat different. Love the Chicken Korma, Rogan Josh, lamb vindaloo, Nepalese dumplings, Samosa Chat, all the breads--esp. love the jalapeno, garlic, and plain naan-- except the saffron. It's too sweet for my tastes but it was really perfectly prepared, gorgeous, authentic, & unique--just not right for me. Generous helpings. Chicken Manchurian was amazing, OMG. Very good Samosas. Husband likes the chicken lollipops. Lovely yellow curry with potatoes. Great Aloo Gobi and Chana Masala. Wow--the Saffron Chicken Laseez--mint. Nepalese Aloo Chili potatoes and Chily Chicken--unique and very good. Accompanying rice is excellent as noted in another review. Mixed Tandoori Grill is just so-so. I saw someone complain about the goat curry. Clearly they don't know goat because it's an acquired taste. I lived overseas. Goat is not for me, but I suspect they're preparing it just fine. Spiced tea is okay, not so great. Setting is fine. Location & parking are safe and convenient. Pleasant service--could be a bit warmer and friendlier. One thing about the former restaurant Bombay Grill is it was family run by a Cedar Creek Elementary/Hill Country MS family, and they bent over backwards to make you feel welcome. This feels more corporate. So it's not perfect, but the food is generally so good I'm giving it 5 stars. read more
