This review is for the Derry Dhaba food truck. The Mysore Masala Dosa was a 4 stars, but the service was so bad...the guy reminded me of the soup nazi from Seinfeld. It was like, the foods so good, people are willing to put up with his terrible treatment. There was a little group of people when we got there. Some were waiting for their orders, and other were waiting to order. There was a couple before us that was waiting to order, because everytime they walked up, he would turn them away. He also did this to us. I guess his system is to wait until food is served before taking another order, but the way he does it makes you feel like such a burden! Overall decent, but "Good" because I don't think I've had a more flavorful samosa anywhere. We tried a few items: chicken biryani, butter chicken, curry chicken, and chicken korma. And the samosa I already mentioned. All items were decent. I really have no complaints. I was pleased that the boneless chicken in the biryani was not breaded (yes, that is a real concern, such an abomination exists). The raita was fresh and plentiful. The shorba was thick and full-bodied. The portion of chicken was very generous. I would get it again. It's not the layered biryani you might expect with an egg and some onion, but it's more uniform and evenly spiced. Still great. The korma was a little different -- it didn't have much sweetness, but I think this flavoring was very pure. It's the only korma that I've really been able to taste pure cashew flavor. And they made it velvety smooth. It's definitely worth ordering. The butter chicken was slightly strong on the fenugrec, but it was also velvety smooth. Judging alone on consistency, it's quite a nice dish. The curry chicken was a bit more tomatoey and loose. It was a nice alternative to the thicker curries on offer. We asked for added potatoes. Flavoring was good. Rice was aromatic and cooked nicely. Rice portions were generous as well. Chicken portions were generous in all dishes. The value for the money here is absolutely great. I did notice the attitude of the gentleman working the counter was a bit terse. We had a difficult call placing the order, but we got through it. He seemed concerned with putting out a good meal, though, so I can't really complain. The bottom line: if you live downtown or near downtown, it's worth crossing the river for this truck. There aren't many Indian options in this area. We had Teji's last week and spent the same amount of money for half the portions (and 1/4 the protein portions). Clay Pit is over-hyped and overpriced. Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night, the lot had a couple of food trucks and none of them were particularly busy. I had heard great things about their roti so I decided to try here. For my entree I had the chicken vindaloo, the sauce wasn't particularly flavorful, much more tomatoey than the usual chili spice you'd expect from vindaloo. The chicken was pretty dry and the potatoes fell apart too easily when trying to pick them up. At the very least the portion size, particularly the amount of chicken they gave, was super generous. As for the jalapeño cheese roti, it reminded me of the quesadillas I'd get from my night owl dining hall in college. The cheese didn't really have any flavor and the roti tasted like a whole wheat wrap you'd buy from a grocery store. There's a handful of interesting Indian spots around Austin but Bombay Dhaba is quite possibly the most scrappy of them all. It's a small food truck located off the South 1st foodtruck park that also has a few other trucks (believe there's also Thai, Mediterranean, and some other options) in the same park. The first thing that comes to mind after you get your order is PORTION SIZE. I'm a fatty and usually eat enough for two but couldn't finish a single order and ended up saving it for another meal. The second thing that comes to mind is SPICE, both in flavor (great) and spiciness (good kick). I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo and loved every bite. The basmati rice is super well seasoned and the Raita it comes with (light cucumber yogurt) balances out the curry and the spice incredibly well. A friend also tried the Samosa and was a big fan. This has been one of our go to restaurant for some te now for good north indian food. The food over here is fresh and consistent in taste. We normally order paneer tikka masala, veg Korma and saag paneer. All 3 are very good in taste. Paneer tikka being a little tangy due to tomato gravy, veg Korma with a hint of sweetness, not too sweet and saag paneer is very good compared to all other places. The best things is they don't use heavy cream as it's evidently visible in all other restaurants. Also, the tawa roti is very healthy and fresh. I saw healthy since this is wheat flour and not all purpose. Also the Veg biryani is perfect level of spice and flavor. A special mention that they give very generous quantity. read more

During social distancing, the one thing you can't have is a buffet, especially those Indian lunch buffets where you can get your fill of curries, naan and chutneys. Well, Bombay Dhaba is no buffet, but the quantity of food they give you for their lunch special may as well be a lunch buffet - I was stuffed after eating half of my order. That has to be one of the best hidden gems in the city for lunch. The lunch special is all of the following: a cup of veggie korma, a cup of chicken masala, a cup of chicken curry, a cup of what I assume is raita, some basmati rice, a mango custard and two whole wheat roti. Sounds like what I eat at a lunch buffet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ None of it is particularly spicy, though I'm sure you could ask them to amp it up if you're daring. My personal favorite is the chicken masala - tender chunks of chicken in a bright tomato based sauce without too much acidity, followed by the roti. The whole wheat roti definitely has a denser texture than I'm used to, but it's got great char and blister marks from the griddle and it stands up to the curries well for dipping. The raita is also a good drizzle over the top of everything. The chicken curry and the veggie korma are fun to eat to switch things up between bites, which means your palate never gets bored though they are less memorable. I was not a fan of the mango custard (aftertaste) but even if you subtract that from the lunch special order, I can't ding them for it since everything else more than compensates. Can't believe it took till now to finally go to Bombay Dhaba but I'm sure I'll be many more times to come! read more

The cheese roti was very greasy and definitely something I would only order if I was incredibly drunk. It tasted great but seemed lethal. The samosas were amazing! They were so light and fluffy and had the perfect crisp level! The order has 3 HUGE samosas. The mint sauce was great, but maybe heavy for a mint sauce. The red sauce was a good break from the green sauce. The chicken in the chicken tikka masala was so flavorful and the curry was so thick and perfectly creamy. The spice level was great too. Our first time in Austin and we're so hungry and excited to eat Indian Foods. The Customer service is so poor and not friendly at all. They handed out the order sheet to my son to write our order. They said they have no more Lamb. So we ordered Chicken Curry , Vegetable Biryani and Goat Biryani. Almost 9Pm and so asked them to make it ToGo. We were so outraged once we got into our Hotel and opened out foods. 3 orders were all the same, w/ three little bowls of pure veggie soup. There's no chicken Curry, no Goat Biryani. We paid $54 and pretty much ate 3 pieces of some kinda of bread and 3 small bowls of soups. Total ripped off. It's late and we're so tired to give them a call or come back. 5 stars for service but an average of 3 for the food quality. We started off with samosas, and the kind man gave us four to share among the two of us. The order usually comes with 3. The samosas were a little too dry for my taste, and the samosa skin was on the thicker side. It tastes better when it's hotter, that's for sure. We both got curries, and I really enjoyed my chickpea curry. It was flavorful and tasty. The thing that I would have liked is less-dry rice. However, they do flavor everything well. And the spice levels are perfect. I love me some spice, so it was the perfect amount for me. I bet you can also specify the spice levels that you want upon ordering. The one thing though is that the Indian food I had here didn't compare to the Indian food I've had back home. The quantity was different, quality of the curries and rice were subpar and the general experience wasn't the best I've had. Pricing is affordable (around or less than $12 per person) and the people there are friendly. The man working the food truck was so sweet and very interested in making his customers happy. He also gave us the option for extra rice to take home if we wanted. The parking is easily shared with the spots for the other food trucks, so you won't have to pay for anything extra. There were a few food trucks around there, and while they weren't incredibly busy, they had a bit of traffic passing through. Not sure why but I honestly didn't have high hopes but was optimistic. In browsing some of the photos, I noticed quite a few people mention that they really enjoyed biryani so my husband and I got an order of the chicken biryani to share. After only the first bite, I seriously could not stop eating. The rice was seasoned so well and there were lots of pieces of chicken in the rice. With a little bit of crunchy onion and raita (yogurt side served with the dish), it made for some delicious bites. Unfortunately we didn't have much time to stop by again but if we did, we would've gone back in a heartbeat. I noticed they have several appetizers, curries, and other biryani options. Ive been hearing about this place so finally decided to give it a try. I love Indian food, my mom's a Brit and Indian takeaway is HUGE in London so I have had some of the best there is... This was pretty good. Not the best, but good. I got the goat biryani, chicken korma, and saag paneer. Saag and korma were good but needed salt! The goat biryani was ok, the rice was a bit overcooked but the flavors were there and the goat was super tender. Wasn't a fan of the whole wheat roti but thats just taste preference! It pains me to write a one star review here Because the truck is run by nice people. Servings are very generous - and the curry sauces are lovely. What is the issue? The chicken. They buy bottom of the line cheap chicken from some disreputable supplier. As soon as I left, my mouth had the dirty taste of old dubious chicken. I was nauseous for a little bit - but I recovered quickly. There was never an issue while I was eating because their sauces are so darned good. But the aftertaste of old cheap chicken is hard to hide with sauces. * * * My wife had the vegetables and was happier. (Neither she nor I liked our bread). Other Yelp reviews suggest that the Samosa are pretty good, and so are the Paneer dishes. So it could be that if you avoid chicken you would be okay. I might avoid lamb too - since who knows if that comes from the same source as the chicken. Go vegetarian and you may have a better experience than we did. Servings are generous and flavors are good. * * * If I was management, I would pay more for my meat and just add the difference to the price. They are already quite reasonably priced - so adding a dollar more to the meat dishes to guarantee fundamental quality would seem to be a viable business proposition. Excellent!!! I am extremely happy to have found this spot. The flavors are legit and I'm supremely pleased. The samosas are my favorite here. I have never had such authentic samosas in the US. This tastes exactly like what you get in India. Do try them out! I have also tried the chicken biryani, chana masala and the chicken curry here. Everything was delicious. I have zero complaints.
