My favorite vada pav in the world is from a small shop in Bandra called Subash Vada Pav - not one of the noteworthy landmarks of Bombay like Ashok, but in my experience the most satisfying. My second favorite might now be the one at Pav Bhaji Express, an unassuming food truck right along I-35. They offer a thecha Vada pav, which uses thecha in lieu of classic pudina hari chutney. Thecha is a classic Maharashtran condiment made from pulverising hari mirchi and spices. I've seen it more commonly as a side dish with other sabzis in Maharashtran ghar ka khana, but it's an excellent topping for Vada pav! I love the slight bitterness that the thecha adds to the sandwich. The only cure for an afternoon this hot was a cup of masala chai on the side. I didn't love the chai patti they used, but otherwise the ratio of milk was good. read more

Got the velvet pav bhaji and it was fantastic. Tangy, flavorful bhaji dipped with a crusted pav was the ultimate bite. I barely tasted the beetroot in it. As for the dhai bata chaat, it was refreshing to cleanse my palate after the pav bhaji. Cooling, crunchy and sweet all in one- but I wouldn't go back for it. They are both a tad bit spicy but tolerable and enjoyable (no tears, mild fiery spice). And the crunchy parts on the side beside the onion were so yummy, I'm not sure what it was. Overall, this is a good meal for one person since for the quantity - no leftovers. The workers are so kind and conversational! This has been on my list to try for awhile and finally made it here today - we showed up right as it opened at 12 which was perfect because we got a table with an umbrella to sit there and eat. My fav go-to spot for a quick Indian street food close to downtown. The location is amazing with ample parking space. The menu was welcoming , with different varieties of Pav Bhaji. I have got the Amul cheese pab bhaji and the special pav bhaji. I loved the Amul cheese better, it was soothing and great. I should say this is one of the best pav bhajis I have ever had in the US. Especially getting Indian food south of the river is really hard and this place stands out. The gravy was creamy and yummy and the bread is of top quality. I also got the vada pav and the potato's outer layer wasn't the best. It was a little crunchy and not moist so I would not get that again but the potato filling was amazing. This has become our go-to Indian food truck. One of the best Indian street food food-truck. The gentleman, whose name I can't recall, who takes orders is such friendly welcoming sweet person. Must try: Any pav bhaji (my fav is amul cheese pav bhaji), dahi batata sev puri, avocado jhalmuri (because feels so healthy to eat and unique). And well actually I love everything on their menu. Have tried everything, except beverages, and enjoyed it all. They had recently started serving fresh watermelon juice with this heat wave and that felt so refreshing. We are so happy to finally have Indian food options in South Austin. This is an interesting location and hopefully they get a lot of foot traffic from Zilker and Barton Springs. They have also made good use of the limited space at the gas station, creating some outdoor seating options to enjoy your food fresh. Portion sizes are generous and filling. The gentleman taking the orders, possibly the owner, was considerably and genuine. We got a papdi chaat and a Pav Bhaji. The Bhaji was flavored very well and we recommend it. The chaat was okay but I'm also extra particular about my chaat so you should give it a try for yourself. They had just made fresh biryani and we were so tempted, if we weren't traveling tomorrow. If you go there in the afternoon (not sure about the new place) be ready to stand in sun or you can choose to sit inside car. Parking are limited as well. The menu on the food truck didn't have prices so you have ask for paper menu or check prices online. Overall good option for south Austin given that are not many Indian food trucks in that area. Surrounded by a gas station and throngs of young people exiting Zilker Park and Barton Springs exists the Pav Bhaji Express, a Veg Only food truck that, considering the demographics that surrounds it, is surprisingly authentic. My Indian friend and I came here to try it out since I just moved nearby, and we were totally blown away. The food was a bit pricy, but the serving sizes were large and the quality was spectacular. Looking to try something new and this popped up in my Doordash deals. Pav Bhaji is Mumbai style street food, and we all know street food is always some of the best food. Special Pav Bhaji - Their main dish, delicious toasted buttery roll, with the phaji gravy. I didn't get the spicy version, but this was quite spicy as expected. Not like flame in your mouth spicy, but lingering mouth watery spicy. This type of dish is what I think of when I think of street food - simple on one sense, but with tons of flavor. Paneer Dum Biryani - LARGE portion of biryani. I don't usually order biryani because I feel like there are usually other better dishes to get, but I did enjoy this biryani. There were some chili peppers in there that were extra spicy, but mostly manageable. Samosa Chaat - If you like samosas, then you'll like Samosa Chaat. Recently visited the Pav Bhaji express food truck after seeing it pop up in Yelp recommendations. I was surprised at the low prices and amazing flavor from both the Pav Bhaji and the Dhai Batata chaat. It wasn't too spicy for me but just perfect. I really liked their green chutney and how they carefully packed the batata chaat for us to take home. The owner was a really nice guy who gave me chai on the house. That chai took me back to India, it was very authentic and refreshing. Only suggestion if you go is to ask for more chutney and dhai. Ordered for pick up on Uber Eats. I was only ten minutes ago and my order was ready by the time I got there. Google Maps says there's a drive through so I was expecting a brick & mortar but it's a food truck in a parking lot. Parking is a bit cramped but it wasn't too difficult to find. They do have seating under a covered and decorated space next to the food truck which was nice. Food was really good and super crunchy even after the 30 min drive home. The Pani Poori might not quite meet the expectations that were established for me by my last experience at Chatpatti Chaat but it's still fantastic. And Pav Bhaji is much closer. (Who wants to drive way up north for Chatpatti Chaat anyway?) The sweet "khatta meetha" tamarind puree and spicy "thikki" cilantro-mint broth blend perfectly to bring out the earthy flavors of the potatoes, making each bite a refreshingly delicious literal burst of flavor as the fluids seep out from the crispy puffed-fried sphere. The Shezwan Vada Pav was a fun experience, and I'm told by my South Asian boyfriend that it turned out very authentic to the nostalgic flavors that he recalls from his mother's home cooking. If you're craving something rich and savory, this deep-fried potato dumpling sandwich is a nice option. The Masala Chaas (a spiced yogurt drink) offered up a flavor profile I didn't expect -- a surprising degree of spice blended with the cooling contrast of the yogurt. I got the sev poori, and my fiance got the masala pav. I can honestly say the food takes me back to my family's home in India. It's a little hard to find as it's currently parked in a lot next to a gas station, but it is worth it, I promise! I went in the middle of summer, and they had a shaded area to eat with fans and misters, which made it a lot more comfortable to enjoy my food. My wife and I grew up in Mumbai which arguably has the best street food in the world. Personally I have never given more than 3 stars to any Indian street food joint I have visited in usa.
