Nice area, decent service. Food a mixed bag. Grilled broccolini was super bland and needed a steak knife to cut. Lamb was, however, tender enough to cut with a fork, nice mix of flavors. Micro cocktail (smallest rocks glass i have ever seen) was good. Mini coke for $4? Really? Request for salt yielded a little cup with maybe half a teaspoon- "the chef knows best" vibe is a little off-putting. I should be happy there wasn't a charge for that i guess. I absolutely LOVE Saffron. It's pricey- but worth it. Trust me. Their menu is inventive and I love it! Don't expect to find anything traditional - just original or inspired dishes that you certainly can't replicate at home. Also, the service is super great. The maître d is awesome and always remembers something from the time I visited before. She is friendly and knows how to run a restaurant. The owner is completely irrational and extremely rude. For someone to be so rude on the phone while making a reservation and then screaming about COVID and how hard her year has been. We have all had a horrible year. I'm a nurse in a hospital. But I'm not screaming. All I wanted was to eat. We are foodies and love good food. It's a compliment. I called to make a reservation in which they do not take large groups, I asked if we can do two tables of 4 ( this is a group of execs whom all will be covid tested prior this trip) and Kimmie who claims to be the manager was extremely rude when I asked for 2 tables of 4 she said we take covid seriously and we are not serving you! Wow! She said they are not serving tables of 4 either so FYI to anyone who wants to go there you will have to go by yourself apparently along with a bunch of other strangers. Wonderful food, atmosphere, and staff. It was very affordable for high-end too. The woodgriiled octopus dish was balanced and not at all rubbery. The cocktails are flavorful and strong with our being over powering. We had the hanger stake. Never in my life have I had steak fall apart like that. Sometimes you resist or don't interact with something and when you finally do you wonder what took you so long- that's me and Saffron. I'm not a fan of falafel and humus Mediterranean- my family is Middle Eastern and it's never like home. This is NOT one of those places. I had the beef tongue, a ragu, an African chickpea soup, and ganache for desert. Lovely. All lovely. I had the I Am Huckleberry cocktail which was delicious and gorgeous, and potent. Service was great! A++. It's a bit on the pricey side, but in the range of other restaurants of its caliber. We visited Walla Walla specifically because a friend praised Saffron, and immediately we could see why. Their food can be classified as Mediterranean brutally, but it's also completely original. This is a place where it's all in the sauces, and specifically the spices in those sauces. The key word at Saffron is this: Za'atar. Once you've tried it you'll be begging for more. Za'atar & olive oil with their fresh baked bread is a meal in itself and worth whatever they'd charge you. The Mezze plate is the best hummus you'll ever have, and we had a seasonal pasta that was excellent. This is easily one of the best restaurants I've ever been to in the world, undeniably. The Lahmacun ... oh my ... seriously one of the best dishes I've eaten. It's perfectly crunchy, savory, fresh, refreshing, and filling (but not too filling). From their menu: "very thin Turkish flatbread, spicy tomato-pepper purée, spiced lamb & beef, parsley, green onion & lemon oil". WOW. My husband had the Black Pepper Gramigna - which is "cacio e pepe", Parmigiano-Reggiano, Italian parsley, extra virgin olive oil & fresh truffles. Another outstanding dish. We had reservation very late at 8:15 probably because of high demand and good ratings. That's why we choose this restaurant. The staff was friendly and we're seated right away. We got served water and choose our wines for dinner. We started out with the Mezze Plate and Merguez Sausage both were delicious. Our main dish was the Porchetta and the Pacific Halibut Tagine As a side we also had the Patatas Bravas. The seafood in the Tagine was good but the halibut tasted a bit fishy. The Porchetta was way too salty but after not having any food since noon we were very hungry and didn't bother to complain and wait for another 30min. When the waiter stopped by and asked I told him about the issues, he replied, oh it's a little salty and I replied it's very salty. Then he said. thanks for letting us know. At this time I had probably eaten 30% of my dish. For this kind of restaurant I was expecting a response to solve to the problem. I finished the not so salty parts. Paid our bill and left. I'm not sure if I come back if my concerns are not heard. This could have easily been a 5 star review if they just pay attention to their paying customers. read more

There are many great food places in Walla Walla, Saffron is one of the best. The service is friendly, fast, and the ambiance is cozy. I brought a group of 7 and came in early to drop off a bottle of wine for them to chill down before we arrived. They gladly did it and brought it to the table once we sat down. We did appetizers to start and they were all great. These were the following and I suggest all of them. The Beef and Lamb Tartare (so finely minced with great fat), the Falafel, Croquettes (sooo good!), and the Octopus Salad. Everything was great and full of flavor. We then all ordered our own dinner dishes. The flatbread is so great and very big actually. Once you get it, roll it up like a wrap and cut it up. My friend who goes there often suggested it and it was an amazing way to eat it. Try it. Lastly the dessert was great. I got the sea salt caramel chocolate cake. It was very rich, you have to share it. This palace has interesting flavors and I highly recommend visiting Saffron. read more

We had an early Sunday dinner at Saffron before heading home from wine tasting. We didn't want to wait until 5 to eat, and the kitchen very graciously served us a full dinner early. We were told the cocktails were excellent, and we were not disappointed. I had the hanger steak, which was cooked perfectly. It was delicious, as was all the food. Had the most AMAZING experience at Saffron. We have dined all over the world, and this is by far our favorite restaurant. Not only is the food absolutely incredible, but the service is impactable, the staff is very friendly and well versed in food and beverage pairing. It was our 1st wedding anniversary and not only did the owner Island personally greet us when we arrived, but she was super attentive during our entire dinner. Her attitude and beaming personality is beyond contagious and made our visit exceptional! This is by far an experience we will never forget. She seemed pleased that we were canceling, didn't thank us for calling or anything. We canceled because my spouse had an issue at work and needed to be on the phone on and off. We canceled 4 hours before our reservation. I had the conversation on speaker, and spouse heard it, we were both shocked at the rudeness. We had a wonderful meal and experience at this beautiful and carefully designed restaurant. Three of us came with no reservation. It was early, and we were beyond thrilled that they made space for us, at a delightfully cozy table with a view of the kitchen. The owner was so kind, the food (calamari, asparagus, mushroom flatbread, cavatelli, black cod) were all delicious. Servers delivering our food and beverages commented on how cozy and happy we looked (we were!) The cocktails were perfectly balanced. When they were out of the wine I ordered, the server brought something comparable (and less expensive) that complimented the meal. We ended with an olive oil cake with the most incredible orange caramel ice cream. The owner spied us talking (rapturously) about the ice cream and promptly brought us another scoop. I can't imagine a better experience. That whole team worked hard and well together, producing incredible food and service. 10 stars. read more

Not a wonderful dining experience. First they charge six dollars for six cracker-sized pieces of bread. The Prosecco was good and well priced. We ordered halibut and beef cheeks which were good but I was most excited to see they had plaki beans. They instead brought out green beans which I wasn't interested in. Our server was very sweet and just took them away. When they charged us for them, I thought it was a mistake. The waitress tried to take them off the bill but said her manager (I think it was the owners wife) would not let her. Then the manager came running over to tell us that they weren't Greek (she's Asian- I think I figured that out) and I shouldn't have expected plaki beans even though that's what was on the menu. Plaki was just "an inspiration "! She finally took the charge off the bill b made the poor server pay for the beans. I was horrified to think she would do that to the server who was wonderful all evening. Before we came, we read some good reviews about the food and some unbelievably horrible reviews about the owner/management and their disdain for customers and their employees. Believe the reviews. Somewhat comical as I have not even eaten here yet but have already been told off by their manager or whoever takes reservations twice now. Called about a week and 1/2 ago to make a reservation as we are coming in for the weekend from Texas and I was told to call back, was told she did not even know if they would be in business in October. So I called back and was told off by her again, I felt like I was being reprimanded by my teacher. I guess the owners have hired this person to HELP THEM LOSE business. We were going wi friends who've eaten here several times and they are appalled at the treatment and none of us will be going back. If the front of the restaurant isn't nice and respectful - there's NO point in having the food. And we will NOT be recommending anyone we know to go here. We're a group of nice people that don't ask for much but we're tired of restaurants that think their food can excuse rude treatment. I have mixed feelings about this place. Now listen, it's not bad. Not even close. In fact, most things were quite good. Not transcendent mind you, but decent enough. Will I go back? Probably not. I like food. I like good food a lot. I will pretty much pay anything you charge for good food. Ok? But, here's the thing. I get the sense that this restaurant is flying high on the hype, to the detriment of the sort of homey, welcoming, comfy atmosphere I want in a restaurant. Instead they go for "take it or leave it" and "we're not for everyone". Hopefully their house is always so full and never do need all the people they've chased away with rude behavior along the way. Their one vegetarian offering that is sort of entree-ish is a flatbread. They refuse to make any substitutions or changes- even when I explained I am a vegetarian. The menu is the menu, I am told. Well, ok then. The space is cramped. Like really cramped. And the waiter scootches between the tables to talk to people- which means his tush is in your face for fully half of the meal. Not a fan of this set up. The pricing was painful- even for someone prepared to pay for excellent food. The mezze is one- a choice between several. It ended up being about a 1/2 cup portion. $6. Then, you find out, it doesn't come up with anything to sop up the juices. So, another $5 for "pita" (that's not, btw). So, $11 for a tiny appetizer portion of yogurty chickpeas. Really? We also got the haloumi. I was super excited but ended up ambivalent about the dish. The cheese was grilled to salty perfection. The apricots were mealy. The overall dish was too sweet. It screamed for acid. Or something. It just never really came together for me. Husband ordered the pork special. The pork was good. Served with some belly fat, mysteriously served soft instead of fried. He didn't enjoy the veggies. But the pork was good enough to make up for it. I ordered the fontina & mushroom flatbred and added a poached egg. I love a runny egg on pizza. In this case- the egg was poached just until the white was starting to coagulate- but was still translucent. Yuck. I scraped it off. I've eaten a lot of poached eggs and never had one served almost raw before. The rest of the flat bread was ok. Not a huge fan of mushrooms but other than that it was fine- not amazing, but not horrible. The timing was also odd. The waiter insisted upon "coursing" the food, though I'd asked if the apps could both come at once. No, I'm told, we do courses. Well, ok then. So, the apps came out well timed- but then it was 30+ minutes until the entrees showed up. All the while waiter's tush periodically shows up uncomfortably close to our table. And we're all smushed in with the other people. And I'm disgruntled that they aren't willing to be every so slightly accommodating to make their vegetarian patron happy. So, yeah, we'll be back to walla walla, for sure. But not to Saffron. read more

I've been to Saffron several times before, and had a wonderful experience. Today just didn't measure up. The food was ok to good, not great, and the service was rather disengaged. We had the mesa and falafel as appetizers, which were both really good. The beet-goat cheese meza was really good. Our friend had the lamb entrée, and was quite happy with it, calling it the best lamb he's had in a while. My husband had the Gemelli pasta, which he really didn't like. I had the tangine, the only veg entrée, which was good but not great. The biggest negative was the service. The waitress didn't seem very engaged. My husband had asked if the Gemelli could tone down the tuna and was told yes, yet it came out very fishy. No would have been a better answer, and it raises an eyebrow when someone finishes with a dish virtually untouched and you aren't asked what was wrong. Overall this was a disappointing birthday dinner, and I hope Saffron can regain their historical prowess read more
