Saffron is different from a lot of the other restaurants in Walla Walla, in a good way. It took me a long time to try it out, but I'm so happy I did. It is off the popular section of downtown by just a hair, but it is worth the extra walk. Saffron does have a rotating menu (I believe seasonally), and I always recommend checking it out before you go. I've gone twice now. The first was in the fall, and nothing particularly jumped out at me on the menu. What I ended up getting still tasted great, but I was determined to come back and try it again. The second time I went, it was the beginning of summer, and sure enough, I had a terrible time deciding what to get. What I chose was to die for, and I'm so excited to go back. The moral of the story is, if their menu didn't t hit the spot the first time, I would come back and try again! I guarantee it will be packed every time you go, and I highly recommend getting a reservation. Regardless of the business, the service is always outstanding. The restaurant was charming and the staff were efficient and pleasant. The cocktails were pretty good, especially the aged Old Fashioned. The best dish we had was the Fried Levantine Chicken. The flatbread toppings were good but the crust was just okay. The mezze plate was less exciting than I hoped. I'm not a fan of beet hummus in any case. The ribeye steak was a a bit over salted for us but was still good. It was an enjoyable but not amazing dinner. read more

Little off the main part of downtown, so easy to park for free (I live in Chicago. This is a big deal to me and deserves mentioning!) Very friendly staff. Only had room for a few items, but they did not disappoint. Never been a fan of falafel, but I always try. Still not a fan but theirs was above average. Not a dry texture, which happens to a lot of falafel. The rest of the plate was delicious. The seasoning on the pita was awesome. I was happy spooning the herb and radish salad with the yogurt onto the pita and eating that. Had to stop myself from taking down the entire Gözleme. Again, the seasoning on the grilled flatbread, the lamb sausage, and I don't even like cooked greens, but wow. read more

Wow! This place never disappoints us. We had calamari, gozleme and saffron spaghettini. The calamari was crisp and hot, tender and delicious. The spaghettini was an amazing no-meat alternative, absolutely delicious and very filling. But, the gozleme blew us away. It was a huge flatbread rolled into a tube shape, filled with ground lamb and unique spices. And, wow, was it ever just the best. Others have complained about the servers not being friendly. I would say ours was businesslike, did not dote over us, but paid attention to our needs. I preferred him to the overly sweet and cutesy treatment by a server who says "and how are WE doing" and "what do WE want to drink". So, that said, we liked our server. read more

The ambiance, service, food, everything was amazing. We shared the parsnip & citrus salad to start and wow, it was so balanced and beautiful. The hummus is served warm with chorizo and that was mind blowing and super delicious. We also had the beef cheeks. The sauce was amazing, the beef cooked to perfection, lovely. The fire roasted fingerling potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy deliciousness on the inside. For cocktails we had jazz hands and beauty and the beet. Both were amazing. It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since I last visited and reviewed Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen, so it's time for an update! Since then, Saffron has moved to a more spacious and elegant location around the corner. I would no longer describe the atmosphere as cozy, but the layout has a wonderful feeling and allows the restaurant to accommodate larger groups, single diners at the bar, and even outside seating. The kitchen is still visible from the bar, but the "chef's table" is no longer there. Delicious cocktails are still prepared at an adjacent counter, and the wine list features an assortment of local Walla Walla and Spanish wines by the glass. The Lahmancun flatbread is sill on the menu, and paired nicely with wilted greens and a Spanish Granache wine. I stand by my review of 5 stars; Saffron is one of the best restaurants I have visited! read more

Poor service. Took 90 minutes to get our main course, and the restaurant was half full. Menu looks very interesting and exotic. but it was wholly unremarkable. Green beans were mealy and with a weird sauce that only further buried it. Cocktail tried too hard and didn't succeed. The flat breads were very average, we've had so many versions elsewhere that were superior. Same with the wings. We ate at several other restaurants while here that were much more enjoyable. Ambiance is very nice. We ate at a restaurant with the same name a number of years ago and were hoping to have that same wonderful experience. Nope. We have a group of 8 friends who are coming next week and we let them know they should not come here as we had previously recommended. read more

From out of town but visit Walla Walla often. Every meal I have had at Saffron has been a culinary delight. Even more significant to me is the complete dining experience. While I appreciate a menu focused on exactly what an establishment does best, folks speak so highly of this place that I was a bit disappointed. My dinner companions felt similarly. Dined in a few times with friends and tried over half of the starters, entrees, and desserts, and all the flatbreads and sides. Ambiance is interesting. Table service was good but other interactions by phone or in-person were abrupt or rude, which seems silly. Like Walla Walla itself, one is initially charmed but that wears off when you spend a little time there. read more

The restaurant was quite busy and we walked in behind a party who had a reservation. In need of a good meal, we took a chance without a reservation, and were lucky enough to be told that they might have a spot for us. Once we arrived at our lovely table, we were warmly greeted by Tom. He was personable, friendly, and courteous while providing excellent service. The staff worked well together and in harmony. Our waters were refilled accordingly. Finished dishes and corresponding silverware were taken away, then the next course was set in its place. We enjoyed our time here and were thoroughly satisfied with our dinner from start to finish. Our appetizers were well-prepared and delicate. Our entrees were thoughtfully created, savory, and delicious. The dessert was rich, creamy, and devoured instantaneously... so good! Saffron had been recommended by my daughter's friend, and we could not have been happier with the service and especially the food. We had beef cheek, mushroom flatbread (mushroom lover must to have!) and lamb and beef sausage pasta with tomato sauce dish (which was very bright even with heavy meat, made a dish delightful). Our favorite restaurant in Walla Walla!! Absolutely incredible food and service (even with a packed restaurant). The restaurant is warm and welcoming, it feels quite intimate. Love the art and being able to see the kitchen. Our party enjoyed MEZZE PLATE, KIBBEH NAYYEH (lamb and beef tartare), SPECK & SWEET CORN, and a couple of sides of creamed corn for our starters (party of 6). For mains we enjoyed FETTUCINE NERO, GREEK BIFTEKI (beef and lamb burger), and the HANGER STEAK. They make the most incredible house-made pastas. We have tried them all over a season. The lamb burger is my favorite. This dish includes a house-made pita which is so incredibly tasty - I could take a stack home, tzatziki, salad, potatoes - all delicious. Servings are quite generous, therefore, you might have leftovers. Cocktails are excellent. And, they have a great wine list of local wines. We brought a couple of bottles and paid the cork fee. Our server decanted for us and brought out fresh glasses when we switched from Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon. There is plenty of street parking. And, it's a nice walk if you're staying at the Marriott or the Marcus Whitman (few extra blocks). We try to get into Saffron every time we visit Walla Walla. Made for a lovely Valentine's Day dinner! Had the Patatas Bravas and Kebbeh Nayyeh shared as appetizers, followed by the Lahmacun flatbread and Hanger Steak. All were paired with Freewater Winery Syrah '20. All dishes were excellent, I particularly enjoyed the almond and caperberry salsa with the hanger steak. My girlfriend had the Lahmacun flatbread, it was a remarkably robust entree that I'm hoping to get myself on a future visit! We had reservations based on the recommendation from a friend who said that Saffron is the best restaurant in town. She was right! In fact, we just got back from 3 weeks in italy (Amalfi Coast and Piemonte region) and my dish at Saffron far exceeded anything I had in Italy. I had the duck with creamed corn. The duck on its own was very tasty and perfectly cooked, and the creamed corn (also delicious in its own right) perfectly complemented the flavors of the duck and all I say is OMG. My husband is a very good cook so we rarely eat out as we are often underwhelmed, but if all restaurants served such delicious meals, we would eat out every night! Our biggest disappointment is that Saffron is closed on Sunday and Monday so we can't return before we leave town! read more

AMAZING. Extremely attentive and knowledgeable staff. Seated promptly at reservation time. We had two meals- fish (halibut) and pasta (malfadine) and both were excellent. The fish was hot, moist and flaky. The sauce wise bright and not overly salty. The crispy potatoes added texture to the dish. The malfadine was also steaming hot and al dente. No oversalting this dish either, which really let the flavors shine. The suggested wine pairing was spot on. Pretty atmosphere and decent acoustics- we didn't have to yell to hear each other! I loved that a heavy dessert ( cheesecake) was served in a manageable size - not a big slab) so that it could be enjoyed without feeling heavy and stuffed afterwards. Definitely worth dining here over and over. Beware- no substitutions, but they will delete ingredients - of which we needed neither. read more

Everyone & everything here is fantastic! The breads all of them...any of them get them---knee weakening wonderful gluten magic. The mastery of proteins is staggering, so I suggest getting octopus/pulpo whenever it's on the menu. Recently had a beguiling flatbread of mortadella and coppa-touched with a vinaigrette and arugula & cheese. Perfection. All the desserts are amazing here, unlike most restaurants these days where the times and memories of pastry chefs have faded. Get dessert! Get a drink or wine that you haven't tasted before. Lovely bar area if you like to watch a kitchen function effectively and with a modicum of happiness and joy. Saffron always surprises us with outstanding menu selections and this visit was normal and wonderful. I ordered the watermelon gazpacho and the melon was a delight in a tomato base. For the table we shared a flay bread pizza and it was very good. No pieces left to take home. My main was the Mafadine and the tuna was fresh from Oregon. This dish has so many tastes with sweet corn, pea shoots, pancetts and mushrooms that it pleases for ever. The service was good at first but as the place got busy, the sevice thinned out a bit. Still we got our share of attention. Ambience was loud. That's a big drawback if you choose to talk to your guests. Or, listen to them. Walked in early on Saturday of December barrel tasting weekend. Great space and nice service! Tried the pulpo a la gallega (good flavor but would have loved some difference in texture), the wood-grilled quail (super tender and amazing flavor!), the cresti di gallo pasta (incredible!!!), and the mozzarella budino (decadent and delicious). Before I review, I must apologize. It was so delicious and I was in such an amazing food bliss, I did not take photos. I should have, because presentation was lovely, but it was just so good that I forgot. Key points: Outdoor seating is dog friendly. You have to call to make a reservations (wish I could have done it online!), but the patio is first come first served. Parking is abundant on the street. Our server was absolutely perfect. He was friendly without being overbearing, he was prompt, and I have had lots of shawarma in my life, but have never had it in this way: What I'd call Ethiopian style, where everything was laid out on a big pita, and you ripped pieces off and made mini taco-like bites. It was FANTASTIC and my new preferred way of eating it. The lamb was shredded more than chopped and it made for a great base. We also got the falafels and the peach salad. Falafels were very good, and it's always interesting to me to see what shapes they come in. These are discs and came with a homemade tzatziki (pro tip, save it for your entrée, it heightens everything!). The peach salad was fresh peaches and apricots, with pickled onions, harissa, and a few other things, with a light summer dressing. Honestly, it was an absolutely perfect place for a light date night on a long weekend. I kind of wish we had time to go back twice. Highly recommend for a delightful experience. read more

I was excited to eat here after a long 4.5 hour drive from Seattle. My husband also hyped it up, probably too much and set my expectations really high. We started with the peach salad, which was light, refreshing and not what I was craving after a long drive. The raciones/ appetizers are really small even for sharing between two people. The beef cheeks were AMAZING though. This should be made an entree and doubled in size. We shared the ribeye steak with kale. The steak wasn't marbled / fatty enough for me, although my husband who prefers leaner steaks liked it. We finished with the blueberry cheesecake which didn't have enough blueberry for me. 5 stars for food & drinks / 3 stars service I've heard so much about this restaurant. I want to start off by saying how delicious and tasty the food is here. Everything was packed with flavor (what we ordered anyway). We came during restaurant month. Everyone at the table had to do the restaurant month menu or not. There was no flexibility which was a bummer. We were told the restaurant month menu portions were smaller anyway and not recommended for sharing even if we all ordered different items. It was fine though. We decided to order a few appetizers and entrees to share family style and it worked better for us. This was communicated when we ordered our food. We didn't get additional serving spoons until requested. Our assigned server was hard to flag but thankfully another server from another section was more accommodating and made sure we weren't forgotten. I'm happy to finally get to try this place out. The kitchen could learn to use salt We literally waited 40 mins for our food My salmon was very dry My husbands steak was burnt to a crisp on the outside ( not an intentional blackening- just novice cooking skills) and then cut into chunks like it was being served to a 5 year old. The beverage list is not great- not a good variety of items, no REAL, dark beer. Everything we had was "meh"- it was odd how "water like" everything tasted The potato bravas were not those classic-fried-crispy-on-the-outside-soft-o- the-inside gems you find elsewhere , but rather pasty raw spice seasoned baked potatoes. Again, salt would have been nice. If I was at a cafe having a quick bite it would have been fine, and I did eat it because I was hungry, but I would never eat there again for this price. read more
