This is a busy Safeway. Everything looks fresh and it is definitely expensive. If you need to use the restroom you have to ask for a code. I did not appreciate that when I left, my cart locked before I could exit and an employee had to come and unlock it so I could leave. I suppose this is a theft deterrent, but I did not feel good about it. read more

I've been avoiding this review for a long time. I'm hoping that this message will actually land in the hands of the corporate management team. I live on Maui. I shop at this Safeway constantly. I also shop at the two other Safeway stores in Kahului. There's a glaring issue at this store which is often noticed by several shoppers as we all search the: Entrances, self-checkout, every checkout line, back to the self-checkout and then... Back outside to get a cart because there's absolutely zero hand baskets to grab a few items. None. Chronically. I shop at odd hours. Tonight, 12:30 in the morning? There were none, anywhere. A few weeks ago? Stacks of them. They suddenly disappeared. I shop there daily. I do not buy a cart full of groceries. I live alone and do not dare fill my fridge. A bag of groceries at a time is sufficient. Having to use a cart causes gathering more items than will fit in a bag, which I want to be able to carry in one trip from my parking area to my second floor apartment. Stacks of these baskets just disappear from this store, suddenly. No other nearby grocery stores apparently have this problem. Times? Always a stack by the entrance. Foodland? Always a stack by the entrance. The other Safeway locations? So many it makes me wonder what's actually happening. The employee I spoke to says 'people just take them to their cars and drive away with them.' Ok, sure. Then why not the Times and Foodland baskets? Why not the Safeway location that has two homeless camps nearby? That store has more hand baskets than parking spots! Recently they started charging 15 cents for bags. Maybe I'm just old school but isn't that what the food we pay a lot for is already supposed to cover the costs of? I pay $5 a pound for 5 apples and then I have to pay 15 cents to avoid juggling them? But with any phone number there's an always sale on most items. They will discount items for me sometimes in dollars but if I want to buy enough I can't carry them it's 15 cents more. Oh, and then they also eliminated the bags with carry handles so paying for bags decreased the quality of each bag I have to buy. And I have to use a cart to make my selections, pushing the cart around looking so empty. It's a psychological trick - remove the hand baskets that carry exactly one bag of groceries, make customera use a cart that is easy to impulsively add a few items too many for a bag, charge for bags and decrease the quality of the bags so they're more difficult to carry. Oh, and once you walked all over hoping to find a convenient hand baskets you have to walk back out to the parking lot to get a cart with self-locking wheels that sometimes activate automatically by one of the two entrances. It's the ONLY grocery store on Maui that can't seem to keep track of their hand baskets. Two stars because this problem is isolated to this store and that needs upper management to intervene. Oh, and while I'm getting management on the line - your new flavors of always on sale buy 2 get 1 free items don't ring up correctly - that's a $4.99 sleight of hand, I mean, false advertising that has tricked me a few times until I figured out what the problem is: the new UPC flavor isn't tied to the sale price that the other 7 flavors of same brand and size beverages are displayed with. An entire beverage cooler with every item marked buy 2 get 1 free should have all the prices marked correctly. I have mentioned it to each store 'management' and every cashier corrects it manually because that's the right price. I'll change my rating to 3 stars if you fix the false advertising on the new flavor beverages. I'll make it 4 stars when the hand basket problem gets solved. If the store manager can't figure it out maybe they could ask the management at Times or Foodland just down the road a bit how they are able to keep their baskets - baskets that appear like they have had them for awhile. read more

Easy to find in S Kihei, large parking lot easy in and out. Wide selection of groceries. If u aren't brand conscious their safeway brand items are usually alittle cheaper and I've found they are good quality. On Fridays they have $5 specials so be sure to check those out. Signup for their rewards program there are bargains there also. They've started charging for bags so bring your own if u can and save a few cents. They have a large self checkout section and have found the clerks there are very helpful if you have any issues. Happy shopping read more

This is a very nice and huge Safeway, even in Los Angeles terms. They had plenty of food and drinks and accessories you might need on your vacation. It seems more tourists frequent this grocery store, as Islanders seem to go to Foodland along Kihei Road. My choice is Safeway, as I want some familiarity with the stores I normally frequent. read more

We were staying in condos in Kihei and needed provisions. Prices are a bit more expensive such as waters, soda, beer, produce, proteins than Foodland (half a mile away), less local bakery and deli items than Foodland. Fair variety of poke (but imported from California), some local - look at their signage!! Deli local specialties from seaweed salad, shrimp, seasoned squid (look at labels a lot of the ahi poke has been previously frozen and not fresh). read more

We were staying in a condo in Kihei for our week in Maui. The clean and well stocked Safeway was near the condo so it was one of our go-to grocery stores to re-stock on food and beverages. Employee at the self checkout was rude to my wife. My wife asked for some help because a sale that was posted was not ringing up correctly on the self checkout. The employee showed my wife in a rude and condescending way how to get the sale to ring up properly, then went over to their co workers and insulted my wife behind her back saying that my wife was a stupid customer for not knowing how to get the device to work. The employee did so in Filipino language, which my wife fluently speaks. My wife confronted the employee once she heard this and the employee seemed shocked and did not want to acknowledge my wife anymore or even apologize. I felt obligated to file a complaint about this because this is not what you want from front end customer service at all. It is the kind of experience that makes you want to shop elsewhere. Hope the complaint is taken seriously by the store manager. read more

Seafood associates are super friendly and helpful to us, Renz, Davey, Ed and Crizelyn from the Bakery. The only thing that I find super disappointing is the DELI. I requested to put my chicken in a container, but Lorie said I couldn't because we have a memorandum that the container is used only for meal packages. I told her I was willing to pay extra. But she still said NO. The manager didn't do anything about it ; she was just stocking some products at the front. As a mom, it's convenient for me and for my kids because that's their lunch at school and easy to put inside their lunch bag. Overall, not bad at all except the Deli. Why does the deli-staff feel so absolutely put upon when I ask for something to order on a $5 Friday? Example: Any style of ham is advertised for $5 a pound and I request a half pound of any style ham. More than one of the deli-staff have been outwardly unhappy with me and slow-walked me out to the shelf where there is a one pound, a one and a half pound, or a two pound package of pre-sliced ham on sale. Worst grocery store on island. Try getting some lunch meat sliced at the deli...employees regularly ignore the line forming. When someone does acknowledge you standing there they act bothered you interrupted them taking out trash. Watched employee fiddle with trash and then glove up (no hand washing in between) and then proceeded to cut deli meats. Poke counter is a similar story. Employee Edguardo stews back there with his hood up glaring at everyone. Regularly out of items. Poorly organized store. Terrible customer service. Quality/Quantity - Safeway has the freshest Poke!! And you can trust their quality! We do visit your competitors for updated and other recipes. Also take a look at my fish display picture, so so fresh! My daughter tried a new tofu poke, not my taste, but she liked it. In the same picture, look how fresh my salmon poke is!! Also check out the bottom of my beer; I learned to freeze water in the bottom of the cup to keep my beer colder for longer, not that I don't drink fast enough, LOL. The deli employees are rude,,,very rude,,, and screw up orders and act like it's the customers fault???? You can attempt to communicate with them and they just ignore you and they act like it's super inconvenient that you are even in the store. They need to be moved out and reassigned to a position where they don't interact with customers. read more

Just a quick stop today, to pick up a couple of Friday specials. It worked out well. Safeway often has bagels for $5 a dozen on Fridays. It's especially good, because they always have a variety of flavors. They also had freshly fried chicken tenders in the deli for $5 a pound. That's hard to beat for a lunch entree. Fortunately, they actually had them ready to go this time. All too often, they seem to have a limited supply and want to Dole the tenders out over the course of the day. That's when the response is "we'll have them out in a half hour", so you do the rest of your shopping. You return and get the same half hour wait again. Might as well say, "No tenders for you!" Anyway, they also had sliced cheese on sale in the deli. Don't miss out on that $5 a pound deal, either. Sometimes, though, the cheese is a variety that is a little soft and the slices tend to stick together but don't you dare ask for those little plastic tissues between the slices. If you ask for this level of service, be prepared to be on the receiving end of a withering skunk eye from the deli lady! read more

Arrived in Maui 12/27/22, and visited Safeway to stock up the rented condo. Triple crown of (1) store under construction, (2) whole sections like dairy and produce unstocked, and (3) prices higher than just about every other grocery store ... high even for Hawai'i. Still less expensive than eating all our meals in restaurants, so we dropped $380 on groceries for a ten day stay. Not bad for a family of five, in the long run. As with all places in Hawai'i, kind employees and a lot of Aloha. When we got back to the condo, we found about 5 items missing that we put in the cart. They weren't on the receipt, so as best we could figure someone took them out of our cart-- ostensibly, these were the last-on-the-shelves, so maybe another customer helped themselves when we weren't looking? Weird. Visited a second time, and they must have stocked. Still $10 strawberries, but not here for a haircut. read more

Popped in today after visiting my dermatologist as the Lahaina Safeway is empty!! Wow...this Safeway has so much in stock! I was giddy with excitement to see cereal, grapes, broccoli, and peanut butter. Yippee! If you look at the photos of my Lahaina Safeway review you will see why I was skipping down the aisles of the well stocked Kihei Safeway :) Anyhoo, I went in to buy lunch after having a craving for poke. The poke bar here is plentiful and the server was very friendly. Just finished putting together a few big pots o' poke for a customer who was hugging flowers and a bottle of bubbly, and helping a tourist who wanted to know what type of rub to put on the ribs he was buying on special. My request for a small serving of spicy tuna poke was a bit bland in comparison, but he continued offering great customer service with a smile which I really appreciated. I also picked up a serving of pre cut melon which was super juicy and flavourful, and my favourite cherry chocolate Kind granola bar. Checkout was only 1 person in front and friendly. Wish the manager of this Safeway was managing the Lahaina one! They have a good selection of pre made food both hot and cold if you are looking for a quick lunch, healthy or unhealthy depending on your life choices :) read more

One of the challenges in going grocery shopping on vacation along with 3 other adults is agreeing to a list and sticking with it. Our recent visit fell apart that way as we all had "additions" both during and after we were in the check-out line. But it was all good, as we agreed on a short-cut on who owed what. This Safeway is larger than the one I used to frequent in Pleasant Hill, CA and it the right place to go after you've bulked up at Costco and need to supplement or restock afterward. The hardest part is navigating a store you're not familiar, but you eventually figure that out. The need to bring some Thanksgiving goodies over to a friend's house spurred a recent visit here. While we found a very nice mixed tray of pistachio and red velvet cakes, I also discovered a nice little treasure in the ready made food section that just has me so giddy and wanting more each time I pass by this area now! SALT & VINEGAR WINGS. WHAT! That's like my favorite things all mixed into one. I really love chicken wings in all forms. Lol. You get an extra discount if you get over 2lbs so we got a mixed bucket of wings. The salt & vinegar wings were my favorite of course and had just the right amount of vinegar without being overwhelming. The other flavors were also quite tasty and my son gobbled the boneless wings :) Give it a try! Now I have to check if it's available at other locations or just this one. As for the store in general, it has a bakery, floral department, pharmaceutical department, Starbucks, Bank of Hawaii and most general groceries that you would need. I hear their bakery is one of the better ones compared to the the other Safeway locations and prices are pretty reasonable. This is a good grocery store to hit up if you're visiting and staying in the area. I believe they keep a good stock of items you would need for the beach from inflatable floaties to sunscreen too. read more

The Safeway itself is like any other Safeway, however there is a Starbucks in this establishment that begs for some needed attention. I am referring to the Philipina lady in there that needs some coaching on what customer service looks like.. On February 2nd, my wife and I headed inside to get our usual caffeine fix and some Red Bulls for our son-in-law and son. We came inside, she was not behind the counter. Easy enough, we thought, she was handling something that needed to be done. We figured we go ahead FaceTime our boys to see which exact Red Bulls they would want. Afterwards we headed back to the Starbucks counter, she's still not there. We asked one of the store clerks is the Starbucks open? The clerk replied, maybe the barista is in the bathroom, easy enough. We were waiting, I believe, from a distance away, she saw a standing there. I told my wife, maybe that's her, and with her seeing people standing there at the counter, you would've thought that she would've moved with a little bit more urgency. I don't know maybe it was her lunch break but we didn't see no sign to indicate that was the situation. Even with us standing there she takes her sweet time heading towards the counter. She was wearing a fell Philadelphia Eagles hat, her demeanor feel like we were an inconvenience. Her seeing us trying to balance these drinks, when we asked for a cup crate. Before we could finish asking, she said she had none. We thought maybe it was just us and we were reading her wrong. The following day, our boys went into that same Starbucks, I shared that they had the same experience with this lady. Our son asked, was it the lady with the Philadelphia Eagles ball cap on? With Maui rebuilding their tourism at the unfortunate fires of Lahaina, people are happy to fly back into support this beautiful island. Starbucks or Safeway, talk to this individual, advise and retrain her on her customer service performance. I usually enjoy shopping at Safeway, but today, I had some issues. In the first place, they put the daily newspaper out by the secondary door, which is out of sight until you get within a few feet of the exit door. If you have a shopping cart as i did, all four wheels immediately locked, and an alarm went off. I tried to drag the cart over to a checker to clear the locked wheels, but I was unable to move the cart. In a short while, I was rescued by a checker with her magic cart wand. Ehose dumb idea was it to put the daily newspaper by an exit door. It is just asking to be grabbed on the way out. read more

Large, clean supermarket. Think of it as being an upgraded, high end version of Walmart. Yes, I know it's not comparable to Walmart but it's a common reference everyone should understand. They have everything a supermarket have from a deli station, hot food, typical home needs and groceries, etc. We actually came here for poke because many people recommended getting them here instead of an actual food establishment. There were many selections to choose from, including made daily and defrosted from prior day. Go for the made daily ones (duh!) and go early because those sell out quick. Who wouldn't want the freshly made ones right? Sold by the pound. Can be ordered by half a pound too. We enjoyed the salmon, tuna and mussels. Don't forget to sign up for a shopper's card too. There's a "sucka" born everyday...........and if you're looking in the dictionary under "sucka"...........you will see a picture of me! Buwahahahahaha! So yesterday while I was working in Kihei, I have to admit I only stopped into Safeway to use their restroom facilities............. Yeah, my hands were really dirty from working on all that machinery, and Safeway was near by, so I went into the restroom to take care of my hygiene, as well as to do number #1. Hope that's not too much information! Lol! Upon walking out of the restroom (yes, i washed my hands again!), I noticed that the deli section was just adjacent to the restroom area, so I decided to do a quick walk-by, since it was near lunch time......... guess what happened????? Bruddah Fran saw a "Wing Station" inside the deli section of Safeway, and the next thing ya know............. the thought of eating wings for lunch suddenly cropped up in my head!!!!! So the signs says $9.99 per pound for the wings.............and as I looked at the Wing Station, I guess I got all excited, as I totally forgot to take a pic of the "Wing Station", shucks! But no matter, because the bright idea of eating some chicken wings from the Safeway Wing Station turned out to be not such a good idea at all! Lol! :( So let me break it down to you on what I picked up that day from the Wing Station - 1. (3) Bite Sized - Boneless Sweet BBQ Wings 2. (3) Bite Sized - Boneless Spicy Hot Wings 3. (2) Regular Fried Chicken Wings (Bone-In) 4. (2) Spicy Hot Wings (Bone-in) So what can I say about the wings? Truthfully, the wings were not too good at all...........I should have listened to my head, over my stomach, because the wings were pretty soggy. I guess since the wings were sitting in trays over a "buffet style" station, over a period of time, I guess the wings could get soggy. If I personally had to choose the best tasting wings from the Wing Station, I would have to say it was the "Boneless Sweet BBQ Wings". The taste was definitely there, but as far as the texture of the chicken.........it was soggy. Of course the Regular Fried Chicken Wings did have a slight crunch, but not the same kinda crunch I would get if I had gotten some wings from Popeye's Fried Chicken. Next time if I'm feeling for some wings, I'll head over to someplace else for wings. Lol! But I'm sure Safeway has other good things to eat from their deli...........just not the chicken wings! read more
