Fresh grass fed beef affordably priced right here in Kula

This is your corner store but it's a little more unique than average long-term family business with lots of local items. Including local produce local meat grass fed beef from our Maui County cattle company and they even have some lamb from time to time, which is wonderful if you can get it. They make very very strong coffee parking lot can be a little tight at times. Good selection of beer and wine they have Hotdogs and Steamed buns to snack on Friendly family service caps off your check out experiences.

Morihara Store is one of the more modern of the mom and pop stores because they provide the community with a lot more goods than Fong's or Ching's up the road. The wine selection is good, they offer meats and produce among other groceries. They also serve cheap hotdogs that you can have with their chili. I thing a regular hotdog is less than $2, but I haven't tried it. They seem to be doing pretty good business mainly because there aren't many competitors nearby. I don't know how old this store is but there is a tiny window with bars on the exterior that used to be the area's post office. This is not a bad place to stop because you can visit the glass shop across the street which is worth seeing also.

I've always heard about this place but never went in until recently. We were headed to a friend's home in Kula for dinner, and she asked us to buy her a pack of smokes. I asked my spouse "Umm, where is there a store in Kula??" Like a diamond in the rough, just past the Kula Community Center, Holy Ghost Church, and directly across the street from the restaurant Kula Bistro on Lower Kula Road, stands this mom & pop shop that has been around since 1948. The 7Eleven of Kula, if you will, but without a gas station. There are quite a few parking stalls regardless of their small footprint. The store is bustling with people buzzing in and out for odds and ends. They're filled to the brim with everything you can think of; canned goods, frozen foods, beer & alcohol, snacks, household goods and cleaners, and a small fresh grocery section. Prices weren't that much higher compared to regular markets, and some things were even cheaper. They also have a Redbox-like DVD rental machine. Service was quick and friendly. HOURS: Sun 7:30am to 8pm Mon - Wed 6am to 8pm Thu - Sat 6:30am to 8pm OVERALL: Super convenient for Kula residents!

This little grocery store really serves a need in the community of Lower Kula where there aren't many places to shop. It's a mom and pop store that sells everything you could want for day to day supplies. Grab a quick snack or do full grocery shopping. Fill up your water jugs and get ice for the cooler. Pet foods. Liquor too. Now you're all set.

Service sucked and food was bland. You'd think they'd treat the locals better. If we go into lockdown who's gonna go there?

I've been avoiding this review for a long time. I'm hoping that this message will actually land in…read morethe hands of the corporate management team. I live on Maui. I shop at this Safeway constantly. I also shop at the two other Safeway stores in Kahului. There's a glaring issue at this store which is often noticed by several shoppers as we all search the: Entrances, self-checkout, every checkout line, back to the self-checkout and then... Back outside to get a cart because there's absolutely zero hand baskets to grab a few items. None. Chronically. I shop at odd hours. Tonight, 12:30 in the morning? There were none, anywhere. A few weeks ago? Stacks of them. They suddenly disappeared. I shop there daily. I do not buy a cart full of groceries. I live alone and do not dare fill my fridge. A bag of groceries at a time is sufficient. Having to use a cart causes gathering more items than will fit in a bag, which I want to be able to carry in one trip from my parking area to my second floor apartment. Stacks of these baskets just disappear from this store, suddenly. No other nearby grocery stores apparently have this problem. Times? Always a stack by the entrance. Foodland? Always a stack by the entrance. The other Safeway locations? So many it makes me wonder what's actually happening. The employee I spoke to says 'people just take them to their cars and drive away with them.' Ok, sure. Then why not the Times and Foodland baskets? Why not the Safeway location that has two homeless camps nearby? That store has more hand baskets than parking spots! Recently they started charging 15 cents for bags. Maybe I'm just old school but isn't that what the food we pay a lot for is already supposed to cover the costs of? I pay $5 a pound for 5 apples and then I have to pay 15 cents to avoid juggling them? But with any phone number there's an always sale on most items. They will discount items for me sometimes in dollars but if I want to buy enough I can't carry them it's 15 cents more. Oh, and then they also eliminated the bags with carry handles so paying for bags decreased the quality of each bag I have to buy. And I have to use a cart to make my selections, pushing the cart around looking so empty. It's a psychological trick - remove the hand baskets that carry exactly one bag of groceries, make customera use a cart that is easy to impulsively add a few items too many for a bag, charge for bags and decrease the quality of the bags so they're more difficult to carry. Oh, and once you walked all over hoping to find a convenient hand baskets you have to walk back out to the parking lot to get a cart with self-locking wheels that sometimes activate automatically by one of the two entrances. It's the ONLY grocery store on Maui that can't seem to keep track of their hand baskets. Two stars because this problem is isolated to this store and that needs upper management to intervene. Oh, and while I'm getting management on the line - your new flavors of always on sale buy 2 get 1 free items don't ring up correctly - that's a $4.99 sleight of hand, I mean, false advertising that has tricked me a few times until I figured out what the problem is: the new UPC flavor isn't tied to the sale price that the other 7 flavors of same brand and size beverages are displayed with. An entire beverage cooler with every item marked buy 2 get 1 free should have all the prices marked correctly. I have mentioned it to each store 'management' and every cashier corrects it manually because that's the right price. I'll change my rating to 3 stars if you fix the false advertising on the new flavor beverages. I'll make it 4 stars when the hand basket problem gets solved. If the store manager can't figure it out maybe they could ask the management at Times or Foodland just down the road a bit how they are able to keep their baskets - baskets that appear like they have had them for awhile.

Another reason to make a stop at Fong Henry is for the hot dogs! Yep, they have hot dogs here and It is really good and so cheap too! I loved how it is cooked, hot, fresh, old fashion style. Condiments ( relish, peppers, mayo, ketchup, mustard) are provided. Owner request that you could use the relish/peppers first before the mustard, ketchup, mayo to avoid contaminations of spoons, keep it clean too when using the condiments. I like it better than the Costco hot dogs. I've never met Ken, from the reviews and thank you note on the wall but I always the see the same lady ( owner?) that helped me, she is friendly and she must wonder why I take so many pics of everything at the store. Ordering off the menu was also a great option. I got the fried rice and galbi, which came with sides and were all delicious. One thing my friend could not stop talking about was the poke, which was slightly on the spicier side but fresh, soft, and very tasty. This place has it all, and you really cannot go wrong. It might be a bit more on the expensive side depending on what you get, but it is pretty in line with the rest of Hawaii's pricing. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
