the prices are insane at this store and good luck if they actually open on time! There is a constant change of employees and your lucky if they even pay attention when a customer walks in. Easiest store to steal from they would have no idea, not that I would ever do that but have had to make myself present by shouting out that I was in the store! I've actually caught people stealing from them and told cashier and they are clueless. They have to send employees from other islands to fill in because no one wants to work there. The cashier's from other islands are much more present! I have bought sandwich/wraps that were gross and expired, over priced and got no refund. From the people I know that HAVE worked there it's not worth it for them. ABC store is the place to go not this store. read more

Great local general store in Kihei. They have all you may need or even souvenirs for your return home. Right next to other souvenir shops and the cinnamon bun shop. We got some waters here for our trip up the Haleakala Summit. There is plenty of parking in front of the store. read more

We just attempted to stop for some quick essentials at the Whalers General Store - Kihei. The store was completely empty aside from one cashier and us. The cashier made no attempt to greet us (ok, no worries - not everyone excels as customer service) although she was standing at the front of the store folding t-shirts when we came in. She did however make a noticeable disdainful glance in our direction as we looked at a few things in the aisle. When we were ready to check out at the register, the cashier made no acknowledgement at all that she was willing to help and continued folding shirts. We left without buying anything as it became clear that cashier lady would not be able to take time away from shirt folding. All in all a strange experience! read more

Typical convenience store type fare with some gift shop items and limited grocery. I don't think we could even find POG juice here! We did buy some novelty pens because of my daughter and they had Tylenol if you're in a pinch. Gift shop souvenirs like magnets and other Knick knacks can be found. Did it have that far history when whalers plied the seas of Maui and berthed in Lahaina and got all their provisions at this store? A nice story indeed. But hey, if you are a visitor and you see this store and it looks like an ABC store except for the Marquee, you say to yourself, why not, let's check it out. Inside the store you'll find every thing but the kitchen sink. We walked around looking at this or that. The missus has the wish list, so she is doing all the shopping. Me, I'm just happy to be in Maui on vacation. Can't wait to check out the IAO Needle and Up Country Makawao. So the Whalers General Store is another good store for visitors. The lady was very rude.. I was asking whether there was any travel size soap as there was only bundle of three bars and it would be extra burden and potential risk of wasting. She instead asked me whether I wanted the bundle set, and said that if I couldn't find anything then they don't carry. I was shocked at her response. Great prices on some essentials, like a sarong to cover your bootie. Reasonable- to not-so-great prices on other essentials, like sunscreen and rum :) Service was ok, nice without being overly friendly or talkative, efficient. There's parking in a lot in front, but it's also within walking distance to many of the hotels and condos. They have what seems like everything here, from macadamia nuts (with or without chocolate), candles, body lotion, chips, some fresh/refrigerated foods, an entire wall of alcohol, lighters, some clothing, sunglasses, lip balm...basically any personal necessity you may have forgotten or chosen not to bring on the plane. read more

I was in this whalers today and the person working in the store at the cash register was not wearing a mask. When asked why I think person was offended, acted offended. What's up with that? Hello, u work in a store and are suppose to wear mask. Other stores like ABC strictly follow infection prevention strategies to keep us safe. This particular Whalers was within walking distance of our condo, so we stopped in here more than once. They don't sell certain items, (where is the spam musubi???) But, they have good souvenirs, and reasonably priced sunscreen and such. read more

Great little market. We just picked up some water and milk because they take plastic, and the cinnamon roll place does not (and we were out of cash--again!). We were greeted on our way in and directed to the right location (although nothing is hard to find here). Pro tip for liquor: when standing at the front door looking at Whaler's, walk to your left to Aloha Discount Liquors. MUCH better prices and selection. Souvenirs are cheap and way more expensive here- go to North Kihei for better prices and a better selection. Overall not bad for the convenience factor but better choices are nearby. read more

Their cashier this morning was very rude and could benefit from training in basic human interactions and kindness. They had what I needed but I will not return for treatment like that.
